Do not use this place to provide wedding cake and cupcakes. Their person did not know how to set up the cupcake tower. They did not leave a box for the cake so it could be taken home after. Had to get our own box to use at our expense. They did not leave a bag for the tower pieces to take back and then lied that they did. Even had the gall to say they told us they left a bag. They did not. Then to top it off they want to charge us $60 for a bag that was never there! Something doesn't add up and then they double down with lies. From start to finish, we had a great experience getting our wedding cake from this shop. We enjoyed the cake tasting where we also got to sample Laurin's openness and overall vibe. After we were done, we were even given a cupcake box to take the leftovers home. She was very easy to get a hold of and asked all the right questions. When we came by one Saturday to make the final payment, Laurin was not there so we unknowingly ended up over-paying since our estimated guest count dropped significantly. The following Monday I noticed money returned to my credit card; the amount that I had overpaid! On the day of our wedding, the cake showed up right on time and was decorated beautifully on-site. It looked exactly how we wanted it and was generously laden with fresh fruit. Everyone loved it and when I finally got to catch my breath and enjoy a slice, it was just as delicious as when we had first tasted it. I would give this place a zero star if possible. I ordered a custom birthday cake for my son. They charged me $60 for a small 6 inch cake because there is a lot of "complicated" fondant on it according to them. I paid for it in full in advance. However, when I came to pick it up, most of the pieces are missing ( milk bottle and rattles, the banner on top). The lady that is working there on that day tried to argue with me that the Banner is not included (I paid $60 dollars for the smallest cake on earth and they are still trying to tell me the banner is not included when we clearly agreed on our email communication to put happy birthday on the banner). Then after we went back to the email, she agreed the banner should be included and told me they will fix the missing pieces tomorrow and ask me to come in again to pick it up the next day. Then early next morning, I got a call from them telling me they will NOT include the banner because it's not in the quote. I am extremely upset about this whole experience at that point so I refused to pick up the cake (despite the fact that they did not make a lot of the parts, the cake is very poorly made, not close to what I ordered at all, see pictures). They refuse to give me a refund. Never contacted me any more since then. I tried to dispute the charge through my credit card company, and they came up lying about the entire situation, saying the $60 is a reduced quote. Never ever order cake from them because not only they do not know how to make good fondant cakes, their employees are extremely rude and inpatient. Terrible experience. How these people pass themselves off as a gourmet bakery is beyond any and all comprehension. It hurt to give this horrible place of business even one star. The employees are rude, hateful and without a customer service bone in their bodies. The cake ordered(with a picture provided and email communication) looked nothing like the actual cake presented. Many requested items were missing. Quite frankly, one YouTube tutorial video and we could have done a better job. Do yourself and your wallet a favor, run.... don't walk to the competitor located next to Olive Garden. If you want the most memorable occasion ruined beyond repair... Anniversary, Sweet Sixteen, your child's first birthday, Wedding.... this is the place to use. Otherwise, pay heed! UPDATE: CC charges disputed and the CC company sided with us! These people took the picture presented as the cake we wanted replicated and passed it off on Facebook as their handiwork. Then tried to sell the cake stating the customer didn't pick it up, but failed to state it was because of their slip-shoddy workmanship. Shut them down. Don't do business with them. read more

Being a huge fan of cupcakes, as well as a Metro Detroiter stuck in Mount Pleasant, I was extremely ecstatic when I learned there was a cupcakery in Midland. I finally was able to head over during business hours and was rather disappointed. Just looking at the four cupcakes I bought, they were all different sizes. My red velvet was only baked 3/4 of the way up the paper and came with a huge dollop of frosting on top that was nearly the size of the cake. Okay, so maybe the size isn't really relevant. But then I tasted my vanilla on vanilla cupcake. I think the cake was okay, but I can't really be sure, because the sickeningly sweet frosting completely overpowered the cake. I tried one of the mint cupcakes and felt the same way. The pumpkin flavor, however, was great. The Gourmet Cupcake Shoppe should be thankful they are the only cupcakery in the Tri Cities, because chances are, anybody else would blow them out of the water. read more

I was a little wary of trying this place with all the poor customer service reviews but decided to finally give it a shot. The shop itself is very cute and clean, with a candy table in the middle that is arranged beautifully. I did not encounter any customer service issues, as the lady who helped me was quite pleasant and friendly. The cupcakes, however, were quite small. Most other places I've been to touting "large" cupcakes actually have large cupcakes. They looked cute though and I thought the flavors available were creative so I got a sampler of a few different kinds to take home. The cake itself on all the cupcakes was rock hard to the touch on top so I was disappointed from the get-go. Upon tasting, the cake was dry throughout on the one that I tried and had an off-flavor, and the frosting left a weird coating in my mouth. Both the cake and the frosting had a very weird aftertaste. A few thoughts: A) A cupcake bakery in MIDLAND? Cripes, Royal Oak doesn't even have a dedicated cupcake bakery...Go mid-Michigan! B) Do not let the diminutive size of the cupcake fool you. These are those fancy new-style cupcakes with frosting that easily doubles the height of the deadly package. Trust me, with all of that sugar and butter, one of these is more than enough. C) Twelve flavors make it into the daily rotation. I've had two so far and they're scrumptious - carrot cake and Detroit bumpy (hey, I was feeling homesick). I will of course have to revisit for an assessment of their red velvet, which is my preferred cupcake. But based on these two, I have to give the place 4 solid stars. I am so shocked by all the negative reviews... I have been to cupcake places around the country in big and small cities and this is by far the best cupcake place I have ever tried (my wife agrees). We loved it so much that we used the Gourmet Cupcake Shoppe for our wedding in May 2017 and could not have been happier with our decision. Our guests (100+) loved the cupcakes, and we thoroughly enjoyed the red velvet cake they gave us. I cannot explain the other reviews. This shop left a bad taste in my mouth (literally and figuratively). My bridal attendants ordered a cake from the shoppe for my recent shower and it was simply terrible. Not only did it not match the explicit decorating directions that were provided, but almost every slice of the bottom tier was dry as could be and had an over-powering almond-taste (even though it was a chocolate cake). Perhaps in order to make up for these shortcomings, the cake was decorated with an inch and a half of frosting in some spots; when cut into the cake appeared to have been evened out with sickeningly sweet frosting rather than having its top cake layer shaved to sort out any unevenness. When the shop was contacted about the anomalous flavoring and decorations by several shower attendees, the owner stated that because she had not personally experienced the bad taste (i.e. taken a bite of the cake itself) she couldn't offer an explanation and would therefore not provide even a partial refund. The Gourmet Cupcake Shoppe will never receive a recommendation from me again. Poor cake quality is one thing -- you can always bake a new cake and offer it as consolation. But poor customer service...that leaves a taste in your mouth that can never really be overcome. Yuck! read more

Decided to give this place another shot in its newer Midland location after taking a break from here for at least a year and have to lower my rating even further. I thought a Detroit Bumpy cupcake would be a nice treat, so I stopped in around 3 pm after a wedding. No one was behind the counter when I entered the store and it took several minutes for an employee to come out, at which point she didn't even acknowledge or apologize for leaving me waiting. There were no Detroit Bumpy cupcakes in the display and i asked if there were any in the back. I was told that they sold out of that flavor early and that she "could have sold out 3 times over if we had more." The fact that so many people, myself included, wanted that flavor and it wasn't available should be a sign to the management that they need to make more of that flavor on a consistent basis. The owner is posting all over Facebook about the new-ish Saginaw store and wanting to open another store in Bay City, but maybe instead of trying to build a cupcake empire she should focus on meeting what her customers want. I've learned my lesson and there definitely won't be a third chance for this overrated shoppe. read more

I am not a huge fan of sweets but wanted to purchase a large cupcake for my boss's birthday. The decor of the shop I felt was really nice and I was excited to see what they had to offer. I was gravely disappointed when I got to the counter only to find 3 different kinds of what i felt were mini cupcakes and there were not even 12 in the case total. I have purchased large cupcakes before in my old town on the s.w. side of the state and kind of laughed that these little cupcakes were about the size of mini muffins, I would not call these large at all, I mean the price was fair, but I was looking to spend about $5.00 or more for one giant cupcake. When I asked if these were large the two women behind the counter were offended and developed a little bit of an attitude. I was just surprised on how small they were and the very limited selection. They did offer a mini cheese cake for about $8.00, just one, I asked if there were others and the older lady felt compelled to talk about the parfaits above the lonely mini cheese cake and stress the price like I could not afford it. I picked the cheese cake and they did put it in a very nice box with the stores logo on top, I would suggest that they might get some raffia for birthday occasions so they can dress up the box a little, I asked if they had any while I was waiting to be rang up and was informed they do not offer anything like that!!! Not impressed AT ALL. I can make bigger cupcakes in my kitchen and with a lot less attitude. On a side note, my boss did really like the mini cheese cake, I think for birthdays and such you should offer a larger size and smile. read more

She has multiple locations and says she has a kitchen at every location but she only has one in midland and FREEZES her cakes and takes them to other locations. I had my bridal shower cake done at the cupcake shoppe. It was a purse cake, and they were excited to make something that is normally seen in metropolitan cities. They did such a wonderful job creating it, and people were taking pictures left and right of the cake. Everyone exclaimed how great the cake looked. It was also so delicious! All the cupcakes there are great, especially the After Hours minis. I purchased some for both the shower and the bachelorette party. My son's fiancee was using Gourmet Cupcake Shoppe for her wedding cake so we hired them to make the groom's German chocolate cake. I felt it was overpriced but we were in from out of state so we went with it. They said that decor on the top cost extra and we had a little figurine to put on it so we went with a smooth top, not realizing how stark it would make the cake look. That was our mistake, however, the chocolate icing was not a consistent color and had rough patches and air holes in it. I would have been happy with just some knife swirls to break the surface. The cake itself was dry and a dark chocolate rather than the traditional light chocolate, and my son (the groom) came to me during the reception and said "Mom, I thought German chocolate was supposed to have lots of coconut and pecans". The cupcakes and cookies are amazing. But, the customer service leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I've had poor service experiences in both Midland and Saginaw. The most recent one was in Saginaw, where I waited about five minutes for service and then walked out to go to Sweet Creations, other other cupcake shop around the corner. (I got immediate service there!). On another occasion, I was there when there were several other people in line. After the flustered girl behind the counter was trying to catch up, she finally looked over to the table and asked the other girl, who apparently is a staff member, to help her. The girl was sitting there doing nothing and apparently wasn't going to work unless asked. On multiple other occasions, the staff has been dismissive and grumpy. I love supporting local businesses, but I will no longer go to the Gourmet Cupcake Shoppe. I think if you want the community to support you, you need to treat your customers right. read more

I live in Midland and never went to the midland place before but happened to drive by the Saginaw one. This place looked cute from the outside but the treats inside seemed picked over. I got two different cupcakes and a cookie. Everything seemed like it had been sitting out for awhile. I only really took a bite of each thing and then tossed it because the cookie was hard and the cupcake was dry and crumbly :( Fortunately I picked up some treats from the other bakery around the corner that satisfied my sweet tooth.
