From the street, it's hard to tell it's a restaurant, even when you walk in the door, there is mystery in the air... it's a place with a Speak Easy feel. The reviews of the Ahi Tuna dinner brought me in the door. Due to the time I had to settle for the Ahi Tuna bowl. It was tasty, but next time I'll wait for the dinner hour. Well, when in Jefferson City... We came here after spending a few hours at the Capitol building (the reason for our visit; it's amazing, everyone should go, the Benton mural is jaw-dropping). We didn't have a reservation and ended seating right by the door, but so be it. They have local beers on draft, and one of us ended up with a lavender gin cocktail that was bright purple. We skipped apps, although one of us did get a complimentary house salad with his meal. The food is, honestly, better than we expected, meaning that it was OK. Our daughter had a respectable cheeseburger with fries, and their meatloaf dish was hearty if not exactly spectacular. One of us foolishly ended up ordering their hummus dish as a main meal, and well, fool us once for ordering hummus in the middle of Missouri....! Their red pepper take on it did them no favors but the lavash crackers were OK and who doesn't love a solid carrot and celery stick situation. Sigh. There only seemed to be one woman working the whole floor and while she was courteous enough, she did splash some drink on the table and wasn't exactly the poster child for customer service. We're making this review sound more negative than it really was, so we do want to emphasize that this is a solid three-star experience. If you have a certain culinary sensibility, and you go in expecting that (which we did), you won't be disappointed. read more

My lady friend said I had reserved a table in advance. We were seated immediately at a two top. Sound good? Not so fast! We were the only folks not a part of the congressional assembly gathered in this typically sedate atmosphere. We were both claustrophobic as anyone would be in a similar situation. Great cafe on high street in Jeff City. It can get busy at times as it seems to be the restaurant of choice for those working in the capital. Soup and bread were good but were salty. The tuna was the star of the show -- not spicy, came with two great sides and was delicious. They also have a great selection of desserts, the brownie was gooey and warm. I can't believe Grand Cafe has been there for 12 years, and I just go there for dinner. Dawn was an amazing server. Very friendly and took great care of us. We were there for our 2nd anniversary dinner. We started out with the warm pimento cheese dip. Was a little fluffier than I expected but very good. The husband had the 10 oz filet with the lemon butter. I wasn't sure about lemon on steak, but it was delicious. The green beans with bacon were like my grandmother use to make. I got the last serving of housemade seafood ravioli with a crab sauce and grilled chicken on top. It was so good! There were chunks of scallops and whole popcorn shrimp inside. That is fresh! We finished off with the gooey butter cake brownie and a scoop of homemade ice cream. It is an explosion of sweet goodness. Definitely stop by and see Dawn and have a fabulous dinner. read more

I got the steak fries which was super salty that was nearly eatable. 30 minutes later the waiter brings a super cold stale bread which I'm amazed by the audacity of the act. I got the NY steak with green beans & mashed potatoes & mushrooms sauce. The cause was disgustingly salty, the meat was cold & well done while I asked for medium. We had one experience here, and it was exceptional. We rolled into town after a 50-mile Katy bike ride, dressed in our clown outfits (spandex mixed with dirt and grime), chose this place for dinner, and they bent over backwards to give us great service on their patio, despite the fact that we were street urchins surrounded by overflowing tables of business suits. (The legislature was clearly in session.) My ahi tacos were easily the best thing I ate all week, and everything else we were served was worth licking the plate for. Ok, I really do not normally complain. Here it goes we went there for a business lunch, we sat there for an hour got our drinks but the waitress's never came over to tell us about it food was coming or anything. We finally grabbed her attention and had to get our food to go which took about her 7 -10 minutes. Then we had to ask for Togo drinks, you would think that she would know that. It was crazy, then one of few business person opened her burger when we got back to the office to eat and her burger was raw... don't eat here unless you have all day and like to be ignored!! Lamb chops appetizer - inconsistent cooking. we had 3 different temperatures reflected, well done, rare, and medium. We ordered it Med rare. Good flavor a bit of gaminess. Would have been better if the outside had more of a sear on it. Worth giving it another try Pork belly - this was unusually sweet. It's an odd combination for meat. I prefer my meat savory vs sweet. Pork belly was not crispy and could have been more tender. A good pork belly would not require a knife to cut it. I would skip this next time. Ribeye - the ribeye was very well cooked. Perfect Med rare temperature. Very tasty. The veggies are very heavily creamed. I would suggest getting this next time with the green beans n mushrooms. Definitely worth a repeat without the creamy veggies Duck breast - this was also cooked to the requested Med rare temp. Duck has good flavor. Skin on duck was chewy it would have been better if the skin was crispy. Veggies paired well with it. There were some rotten carrots in the veggie medley that I ate that had the rotten sour taste. It didn't make me sick but was definitely not pleasant. I would totally get this again. It also reheated well the next day. Chocolate flourless cake - this was more like a chocolate torte. There was nothing about this that would be considered a cake. It was super dense. I like dark chocolate but this was bitter. I would skip it next time. read more

Top notch choice, perhaps one of the best in Jefferson City. They do get busy, so reservations are highly recommended. The front of the restaurant is unassuming and I drove right past it without seeing it. Street parking was not difficult at 6pm as downtown gets quieter in the evening. Dress is a higher class of casual, but I'd say less than a collared shirt would be a little under. Service was a little slow to get going. I was seated at the bar (my request) and sat there for about 10 minutes before someone arrived. After that, they were attentive and the salad and main course were paced nicely. The food was mostly good, but I'd recommend passing on the duck; the fat was not well rendered and left a chewy texture. It was tasty and edible, but slightly off. Save room for desserts. Note the S on the end, you will want more than one. I didn't and now I'll have to back and have just dessert! read more

So I found this place online cause I'm kind of a foody and make it a mission to visit at least a few places whatever town I may be in, I will start saying the service itself was fine, the hostess and server were very nice and both gave food suggestions, but I do have to say when you come to this place the amount of food and quality of food doesn't fit the price you are paying. The restaurant itself is small and tucked into downtown Jeff City, nice location, kind of loud but they have added some padding on the walls to counteract that. I will say before I start on food that whomever was in the kitchen did a great job of plating, food was well presented. I got the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and butternut squash. The meatloaf itself without the sauce (which they don't give a lot of) was dry and not very seasoned. The mashed potatoes were good tasting but not very smooth still quite clumpy. The squash I will say was good tasting and cooked well. My friend got the lamb lollipops with mashed potatoes and maple-glazed carrots. There was very little lamb on the bones: about 5 bites worth... The carrots were okay, nothing special. His mashed potatoes were the same. Overall we both individually paid at least 30 dollars for food that was mostly bland and not very filling. Will not be back which is unfortunate cause I try to give everyone a second chance but for the price, I don't think I can risk that! I'm a regular in Jeff City a couple of times per month as I'm doing a consulting gig, my contact and I meet for dinner about once a month. He chose the Grand Cafe-I'd forgotten that we grabbed lunch here about a year ago. I stroll in and am immediately aware that the State Legislature is back in session-political and lobbyist types are enjoying some after hours drinks before dinner. It's a lot like walking into a new High School and being checked out by all the popular kids who are trying to size you up and determine if you're one of them or not. Since I'm a confident dude, well traveled and not particularly impressed by political types I just stared right back at them. In the evening it's a reservations only affair-my contact made one so I gave them his name and was escorted to table in the back. It was LOUD! Our conversation was difficult at first but I was able to dial in and hear and then it got quieter as the Political bros grabbed tables or migrated to their eventual destinations. The feel is upscale, I felt a little underdressed in my pull over thermal, jeans and P.F. Flyers but oh well, they can feed me and take my money even if I'm not wearing a suit and power tie. I ordered the beef fillet, medium with shallot potatoes and green beans. It was all very good and I highly recommend it. I've had the burger here too and remember it as good. The dinner salad was mixed greens, a couple of tomatoes and my only critique of the place was the ranch dressing. It was watery and pretty tasteless. One of the key points of getting a salad is the dressing-they could stand to up their ranch dressing game. A small side of bread was served with oil and balsamic vinegar-liked that very much. If you're looking for an upscale feel with solid food offerings and don't mind being sized up by the State Capitol Political types you'll enjoy The Grand Cafe. Was done to Mizzou to watch some football last fall. My wife and some friends found the Hilton as the nearest hotel. By pure luck we walked into the Grand Cafe. It was our lucky night. I think we found the best Resteraunt in Jeff City. Small place, Missouri charm, very interesting/nice crowd, and food - well just fantastic. In our group we had steak, fish, chicken, soup, salad, desert. Everything was a huge delight. 5 Stars, 2 Thumbs up. I was a first timer to the Grand Cafe. It was a great place and I will go again when I am back in Jeff City. Great food and very helpful and friendly servers. I got the Salmon Toastie on gluten free bread that was amazing. Tyesha, our server, was extremely knowledgeable on the menu and what was gluten free. She was patient and friendly as I asked many questions to figure out what I wanted to eat. We also got the roasted beet salad with chicken that was also very good. This was our third time coming to The Grand Cafe. Since we found this great place to eat, when we do come to Jeff City we stop in for lunch. This time I ordered the tacos. The server assured me I wouldn't be unhappy. They were her favorite too. I definitely was not disappointed! Three tacos with three large shrimp in each one! Huge shrimp! I ate one out of each taco with my fork they were that large. The sauce they put on them is spicy and delicious! I ordered the homemade chips that came with them. They were tasty, although the tacos were truly filling enough for me. You can't go wrong ordering the tacos! My husband ordered a hamburger which he said was cooked perfectly and was juicy and delicious. Hopped in for lunch on a weekday, just after 12.30 and it wasn't busy at all. Super cute place with a high end feel. Heard that it's the republican hang out so I had to wipe my seat down real well to not get contaminated. My Cobb salad was perfect smallish size but to add salmon was $10. Others said the burgers were "ok" and the salmon toastie was superb. The drink menu is A+ with infused liquor and specialty cocktails. No iced coffee but the server made some up on the fly. Ceiling is a cool old tin and the walls would look fab with some wallpaper. Menus looked a little dated and as if they were printed on Windows 98 in the cool cursive font at the time. In all, this place is probably a 10 for Jefferson City but more like a 7 for St Louis or Kansas City. Solid choice for the area (aside from the republican situation). read more

After trying 3 other places to eat only to find them either closed, or having closed their kitchens well before closing time, I wandered into the Grand Cafe. Despite being 35 minutes from closing the staff was gracious and pleasant about serving me. A got the mussels appetizer and a burger. Both were excellent, along with a really good beer selection, and a very pleasant and simple decor make this restaurant a winner in my book.
