Great place to try samples of wine. They have a reasonable selection to choose from. They offer samplings, by the glass and by the bottle. They staff is very friendly and helpful. The best part of the experience is the atmosphere. They have a cute patio and outdoors area where live music is played. They also offer cute gifts. What better stop while you're in Gruene than to stop in to taste a few wines. You never know what you'll find. My friend and I had gone in for a tasting to see what might be tempting. It never hurts to buy a bottle of wine, right? Well, it was fairly crowded, being such a beautiful day out. However I have seen it busier. Anyway, we had walked up to the counter and were greeted and asked what we would like. We took a few minutes to decide and got our sample. A little dry for me, so we got another. Now a few minutes have gone by as we've been standing there. People come up to the counter and get help. We finally decide what to get and the person who is been helping us keeps on walking by, as she is helping others. But there are a few other people working the counter, including a gentleman less than four feet away. Well, we stand there, just looking, waiting for someone to help us. That help never came, so we decided to walk out without a purchase. It's always important to keep track of everyone that comes into your business. In the summertime, when the weather is fine (according to Mungo Jerry, anyway) one of my fave quick-trips is to head down to Greune, TX and visit The Grapevine. It's a cool little wine store on the main road, a perfect stop to refresh your attitude after perusing the antique stores and other quaint shopping stops there. I'm not much on traipsing around in the hell-furnace heat that is Texas in July, so will walk around from shop to shop just until the makeup starts melting into my pores. That's when cries of "Grapevine! Must. Drink. Wine. Now" steer me like the un-dead into the beautifully shaded, air-conditioned store. They have some nice gourmet foodie items to check out, but the real draw is the wine. This place has a gigante selection of Texas wines; quite impressive. There's a tasting room (well, a bar in the store) where one is offered complimentary samples of a wide variety of wines. You can purchase a bottle or a glass and drink it in the cute little space inside, or sip it outside on the tree-shaded, old-fashioned, lovely front porch. We always enjoy our summertime treks to Greune, and stopping by The Grapevine makes us feel like we're much farther away than just a skip, hop and a jump from Austin. We always come home feeling refreshed, and oh yeah, sporting some new Texas wines for the cellar. read more

You get 3 free tastings of either wine or draft beer. OR you can choose to do 5 tastings with a souvenir wine glass (stemmed or stemless, you pick.) The customer service here cannot be beat. On a weekend day, you will find it to be a happening place, but you won't be waiting in line as you would expect. Sometimes they even have Peach-A-Ritas and Frozen Sangria! The Grapevine offers a plethora of bottled wines for sale, or you can buy a glass.. There is ample seating outside of the Grapbine building, where you can enjoy a glass of wine, beer or maybe you bought a bottle to share. They will give you a bucket with ice to keep your wine cool in. The bathroom situation can get a bit tight, as there is 1 male restroom and 1 female. But there are plenty of restrooms available at Gruene Hall which is not far at all. I like that you can open a tab, so you can grab a beer or glass of wine, walking around Gruene and shop, then stop by when you need a refill. I was bummed they no longer offer any of the wines from Val Verde in Del Rio, but the waiter did suggest a few wines for me to try that were comparable. We wandered into The Grapevine en route to Gruene Market Days. We were post-margarita from The Gristmill and pre-beer from Jack's. Yes, it was a really rough day... As we walked up, I was taken with the beautiful patio. And I loved the barrel and benches. So Texas. We snagged a table and set inside to place our order. Here you can sample up to three wines for free and then every sample after is $1. You can also purchase glasses of wine or bottles to share. We each had a tasting trio and there we enough of us that we were able to taste more of the menu. From that, my group made our selections and we had everything from sangria to chardonnay, and headed back out to enjoy our wine on the serene patio. I guess I don't get the charm about this place. We were there on Monday and it was beautiful weather, completely packed outside and about 4 patrons inside. I never know if you're supposed to wait in line at the register for tastings or go straight to the bar. We stood at the bar for a while and the guy never even acknowledged us. We then got in line and he went and helped a couple that took our spot at the bar. The tastings I got were so small and the lady who was waiting on us was buzzing around and not really paying much attention. I bought a bottle to take home and a glass to have there, but the experience was pretty "meh" for the price. I've brought friends here before but I think we're done for now. Closer to Austin I'd recommend Three Dudes and A Dog winery for a much better experience. Less crowded, way more personal, plenty of space to spread out. read more

I used to enjoy Grapevine... today and among other days this place seems to be more and more of a letdown. Today we had someone start a tasting and then wander several feet down and continue to chat with "friends" completely ignoring us. I guess she decided we were not worth engaging and ceased to communicate with us from that point on. The NEW GM then saw us 5 minutes later as everyone else was being helped and was able to get us (my friend and I ) a glass of wine. Everyone that works there seems to have a scowl on their face and be reluctant to help people. Ridiculous and done with this place for good. Coming from California and experiencing Napa over five times, I can tell you that this is a totally different experience. The wine here focus on wines that are easier to drink for beginners. It is super sweet and light. It doesn't focus on the age or the tannins level. I would definitely recommend it for people who like sweet, white, or are beginner wine drinkers to come here to get introduced to wine. If you like red wines or are an experience wine drinker, I don't think this is the place for you. Now, the real reason why I gave this place a one star is because the service was horrible. Coming through the door, we weren't greeted nor even noticed. We roamed the winery to find a lot of wines from different parts of the world. It was a very cute boutique like place. I approached the male person in front to ask where the tasting was taking place. He answered rudely that it was right here standing in front of the bar. He gave us a menu and told us we got three complimentary wines tasting. We were excited. Looking at the menu, I was shocked to see a HUGE selection of sweet and dessert wines. Curious, we asked to try them. The man didn't attempt to make any conversation with us whatsoever and kept talking to the other customers beside us nicely. That's fine. BUT what made it a really bad impression was the fact that when I asked him why there were so many sweet wines, he answered: "People in Texas has an underdeveloped palate and can only drink sweet wines. We are a business so we just carter to them to make money!" HMMMMMMMM.......who says that? If you hate your job, quit. Don't make your customers' experience an unpleasant one! This is one wine store with a proper sense of humor. Others have noted that The Grapevine is chock full of Texas vintages, and on the day we stopped in, we found ourselves elbow to elbow with boatloads of tasting denizens. There's some surprisingly (for some) good Texas wine to be had (I'm partial to the High Plains and South Plains stuff), a huge friedge with eclectic beers to choose from, and a boutique humidor in case you want to pick out a stogie, which I did. But none of those reasons are particularly funny. What is worth a chuckle or two are the quirky party napkins, wine charms and funny reads that dot the space, and throughout our leisurely stroll inside we found ourselves reading aloud to each other -- often. Tastings run in the five to six dollar range as I recall, but they'll give you a up to three micro-tastings (Im sure there's an appropriate term, but that's what I'm going to call them), and we tried on a number of different sips between the two of us. We'll look forward to heading back on our next trip to Gruene...no question. read more

I'm just going to be super frank here. This place caters to rednecks who don't know crap about wine. 60% of the tasting choices are super sweet and not for the wine lovers palate. There is a blackberry merlot on the tasting menu as well as a peach wine! This would have made sense 15 years ago when Gruene was a tourist destination to only a small town Texas clientele, but today New Braunfels and the surrounding areas are booming with young professionals and travelers from all over who have the palate to handle REAL wine! They need to move into this century. Don't be fooled in thinking the quality or the service will be anything like a winery. It's just a gift shop that happens to sell wine and tastings. 1/2 ounce tastings at that. For $12 you can taste 5 wines. Thank goodness they give you a souvenir glass to take home, because you aren't going to leave with a buzz! The people who work there are young and don't have an extensive knowledge of wine. They are not going to describe it to you or tell you about the origins of the wine. That being said the outdoor courtyard is spacious and nice looking. They have 2 Cabernets on the menu that I found drinkable and well priced. I'd go again in the fall, grab a bottle of Cabernet, and sit outside. I am not usually a fan of tasting rooms, but this one is delightful. You can receive 3 free complimentary tastings, and they even have a couple of beers on tap. The tasting menu changes often. I have been here a couple of times now and each time served by someone different, yet each have been knowledgeable and friendly. This is a definite must if you are in Gruene. They even have some tables outside that you can sit at and enjoy a glass of wine over conversation. I used to LOVE coming here. After much time I decided to stop by and bring my pet along for the ride. Unfortunately, many of the establishments no longer accept pets even if it's outside. It's extremely unfortunate but it has turned me to another local winery I'll be taking my business to. For those who love to bring their pets along this is not the place for you. Otherwise, enjoy! However, it didn't help have a very snobby blonde serve us, because her attitude was extremely rude, we felt rushed, she was not helpful, and acted like she was too good for what she was doing. Um, maybe she should find a job elsewhere? The wine though - good selection and flavorful. I wonder if we had a different wine pourer if we would've been poured a little more, and also if we would've enjoyed the place a little more. I've been to the Grapevine Tasting Room several times often bringing friends and family and generally enjoyed the wine and atmosphere with the staff not entirely Texas friendly but certainly cordial enough given the tiring nature of pouring wine samples all day. Shame shame on Greenvine today however for selling me a 2009 bottle of Syrah which was clearly corked. I brought the bottle back missing only ~4Oz and was told there was nothing they could do about my $26.00+tax bottle of corked, useless wine due to "TABC law" which absolutely does not prevent a vendor from remitting a situation where wine opened on site, which hasn't left the premises, suffers from cork taint. Get with the program y'all; you just lost a customer for keeps. I'm giving two stars for memories past but hard to not offer up one star for a terrible terrible experience . I'm happy to repair this review if someone contacts me with a reasonable explanation. read more

Drove an hour and 15 min today to listen to live music with our dogs. Brought our own chairs so we could sit away from the crowds as not to bother anyone. We've been here before and brought our dog and it was ok so didn't think to call before hand. Upon arrival, quicky noticed the no pets sign. I went inside and explained the situation and asked if we could sit in the far back corner with our own chairs and was told no.
