Title: Definitely Not Their Best Night I've eaten here at least four or five times and have always been impressed with the food. It's a casual, family-style environment, including the bar area, which is essentially one large communal table where anyone can grab an open seat. Unfortunately, today was completely different. The moment I opened the front door, I noticed a strong gas-like odor that became more noticeable farther inside. I mentioned it to the staff and was told a manager attributed the smell to being near sewage. That explanation didn't make much sense to me considering I've eaten here several times, they haven't relocated, and I've never smelled anything like it before. I stayed, but then my soup arrived cold and my made-to-order tacos were also cold. I eventually took my food to go. The waitress herself was pleasant, and I still tipped her 30% because these issues weren't necessarily hers to control. I've had enough good experiences here that I wouldn't write the restaurant off based on one bad visit, but between the unusual odor and cold food, this was definitely not the experience I've come to expect. read more

Beautiful place to be. The ambiance is pretty amazing. I was delayed in reviewing the place but the memories of my experience stayed with me that I could clearly share. This is a solid choice in Gruene, with good food, nice views, and a decent parking situation. It's a better choice during the summer because of the abundance of indoor, air conditioned seating. Chicken Fried Steak, Enchiladas, and Catfish have all been enjoyable, and they have a decent kids menu that my kids will actually eat from. My son, daughter-in-law, dad, and I recently celebrated my birthday at Gruene River Grill on a busy Friday night. We arrived starving, so we really appreciated that our 7:30 reservation was honored right on time and that our server was attentive and efficient. For dinner, my dad ordered the fish and chips with added shrimp, my daughter-in-law and I both chose the grilled chicken piccata, and my son had the balsamic ribeye. Christmas Eve lunch and a great choice! This was an excellent place to stop, and our server, Avery, was an absolute delight--friendly, attentive, and on top of everything from start to finish. We kicked things off with the calamari, which turned out to be a fantastic appetizer. In fact, it was so good we had to ask for extra dipping sauce because the first one disappeared almost immediately. I ordered the lunch schnitzel--WOW. It covered the entire plate and was cooked perfectly. Crispy, tender, and exactly what I was hoping for. My wife went with the chicken fried steak. The only downside for her was the gravy, which seemed a bit "off" and possibly a little too spicy for her taste. We grabbed a slice of carrot cake to go, and unfortunately that was the one miss of the meal. It just didn't live up to the rest of the experience. That said, I was very impressed overall with the restaurant, especially the festive Christmas ambiance. If I'm ever staying local again, this is definitely a place I'd revisit. read more

We got the shrimp wontons appetizer, jalapeno madarin pork chops, & Salmon. Dessert, creme brulee for dessert. Shrimp wontons were OK, they look big but they wrap a lot of excess wonton wrapper around a shrimp so it was really tough/chewy. Salmon, 4/5, kind of bland. Pork Chop was our favorite, 4.5/5 Creme brulee 5/5 We were torn when she said the Ribeye was their main star of the menu so we'll have to come back for that. We took a ride down to Gruene and decided to eat at the River Grill. The food and the service were amazing. We ordered an appetizer that is called the Trifecta a trio of salsa, guacamole, and cheese dip that comes with tortilla chips and actually it's kind of a meal. My dining partner ordered the spicy chicken sandwich and asked if they could make it not spicy and they accommodated. She said it was excellent. I ordered the chicken fried steak again excellent. Since the appetizer was a large portion, obviously we had some of the mains to take home. We also decided to take home blackberry cobbler and since we had a long ride, we just ordered it without the ice cream. Here we go again excellent. I did not catch the name of our server. The ambiance is beautiful, and the service was good, but the food itself was fairly mediocre. The Spinach Artichoke Dip wasn't worth the price in our opinion. It came with a basket of crushed tortilla chips and a relatively small portion of dip, and it was a bit too salty. I can only fully speak on the dish I ordered -- the Fish & Chips. The fish itself was good, but the batter didn't adhere well and separated from the fish. The fries were decent, but nothing particularly memorable. My husband ordered the Gorgonzola Burger and wasn't very impressed with it either. Overall, while the atmosphere and service were enjoyable, the food didn't quite live up to expectations. read more

I stopped by The Gruene River Grill for a late lunch around 1:15. What stands out to me upon entering is the atmosphere and location of the restaurant that generate a feeling of intentional and above class dining, unfortunately this would not be the case. When I had entered the waiting area to be seated no one or indication of seating sense was apparent. Rather 10mins later, I had settled on the idea that I should seat myself to an empty table along side the rest of the sparsely populated tables of the river view. I again must've had my magic cloak on and wasn't greeted till about 15mins later by the sections server. The attitude of the staff was reluctant and rushed, i had never been here and neither a recommendation or direction of menu was given, nevertheless i made my order for a water and the lunch special of queso chicken and rice. The food had received me very fast, which for a lunch special is expected but not nearly as fast as this. My plates presentation was adequate and welcoming but the compliments end there, the queso was generic with the consistency of hardening glue. The chicken was dry, tough and seasonless all the same of the rice beneath it, along side never getting a touch back on my food/experience the only redeeming touch was my water that was cold. read more

I got the Monterey Jack queso burger with American cheese instead of Monterey Jack which was very good. My fiancé liked her country fried steak. The spicy chicken sandwich was also solid. The fish tacos were a little light on fish meat though. The artichoke dip was a solid appetizer. And the fried artichoke was on point!! It was sort of like calamari but with artichoke instead. We made a reservation so there was no wait. Parking was crazy on Honky Tonk night at the dance hall, but we loved the ambiance of the place. The tortilla soup was awesome. The portion size to $ was high value. We chose to share and that was a good choice. The fries were the least favorite thing. Chicken fried steak was great as well as the redfish. The place has such a cool vibe--one of the rooms even gave off serious Hogwarts energy, which was a fun surprise. We were seated right away, and the warm, cozy atmosphere was just what we needed. Not a NB native so this was my first time visiting or hearing about this area and place. Fun walkable location that's near the oldest dance hall In Texas, the atmosphere and architecture certainly reflected that. Service was friendly with plenty of people nearby , mostly college aged kids so expect your service to vary depending on who exactly. It's a laid back environment with reasonably priced food and portions that are generous. The value here goes a long way. Drinks are pretty consistently $13 or less even. Kids menu as well. My daughter made good use of the outdoor patio to see the river and even some wild life! Definitely feels like a community cornerstone that everyone has been to at some point. Food was good too. Mozzarella sticks that weren't soggy and bland, it's easy to be lazy with these but they tasted nice. I was recommenced the enchiladas, I thought they had a bit too much creama just plopped on top though I was able to enjoy regardless. The fried stuff was well prepared, MIL got a CFS that was extra crispy and my daughter had some chicken strips that had a similar breading. Overall this is an institution of the area. Food is good to average, drinks were well priced, and the building is interesting to be in. Parking can be a pain and the AC was working as well as it could in Texas August. read more
