"There's a bistro where we would dine Candlelight and California wine" (Donna Summer) The Greatroom Bistro is the in-house restaurant at the Marriott Melville Long Island. You'll find it on the main hotel level -- walk past the check-in desk, keep walking toward the elevators, and you'll see it on the left after you pass the elevators. It's open for breakfast (6 or 7 am depending on the day) and closes at either 11 (Sunday through Thursday) or midnight on Friday and Saturday. So, it's open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day and evening. The restaurant is gorgeous. From our table, we saw a sprawling four-story tall courtyard rising to a glass atrium. We had two meals here - a Thursday lunch and a Saturday breakfast. Lunch was a California Chicken Sandwich ($19.50) and a Chopped Salad ($16.50) with added chicken ($6). Coffee was a steep $5. My Chopped Salad was pretty good- a big portion of fresh chopped Romaine, avocado slices, diced onions and tomatoes, crumbled blue cheese and bacon, hardboiled egg slices, and a very generous portion of sliced chicken breast. I had zero complaints about the quality or quantity, but the $22.50 price tag was on the high side. The chicken sandwich was solid, and the fries were pretty good. I already mentioned that pesky $5 coffee, so when we added up our lunch bill with tax, we were North of $50 before tip. Was it a $50 lunch? Nah, I don't think so. Lunch service was below average. The restaurant was empty except for four guys yukking it up at the bar who thought it was a good idea to blast a prank call on their phone that was so loud I heard it at my table on the other side of the empty restaurant. It took a long time for our food to arrive -most definitely 30 minutes from ordering to delivery. When a manager walked by and asked how we were doing, we mentioned the wait, and she said "oh, there was a mix-up in the kitchen and its being finished up". Ten minutes later it arrived. Breakfast was quite a bit better. We had a large group for their buffet and everything was excellent. Shout out to the lady who ran the omelet station, she was a delight and did a great job handling the line by herself. The buffet was very good -a nice mix of hot trays, cereals, yogurt, fruit, pastries and more. So, there you have it - decent food, uneven service, and Long Island pricing. read more

Had dinner here two nights while traveling for business with coworkers. One night I got pasta and the other night the swordfish. The bolognese was great but I found a hair in it towards the end. The fish was cooked perfectly. My friends ate there many more times and loved everything. The prices were a bit high even for hotel restaurant prices. The hotel it's attached to is horrible though. read more

Good hotel restaurant if you are staying there. Staff is courteous. Bartender knows how to make a drink (and they dont use crushed ice for cocktails which is a good sign in itself). Menu is what you'd expect with the usual sandwiches but they also have interesting main dishes. The night i was there they didn't have the fresh fish of the day which is probably "because of covid" like all the other places use as the fall all excuse. Bartenders are good but the kitchen is trash. First day I ordered shrimp tacos. They came out cold with soggy fries. Breakfast was good. Then Dinner I had a $20 burger and fries and BurgerKing is better. Soggy fries and wilted tomato and lettuce. I sent it back and they came out with an underdone pink Burger patty. This place is terrible. Even through the pandemic where people are traveling through hard times ........this establishment made it hard for anyone to get a glass at all times.... They will ignore you for soda or water. In fact the hotel the Marriott of Brooklyn (which was empty) stated this establishment the Bistro is a separate entity and one in which treats people terribly!!!the front desk of 333 Adam's St even said that bar.... That bar.... Don't go to it. They treat the hotel as a Separate entity and treat us like crap. Don't even go there for coffee. Tonight I went there and nearly cried. After a long days work. I retracted to this terrible hotel and non existent of a bar. I asked for a single And single glass of wine one minute before their registers closed. They all laughed and said no. Have you ever heard the saying, "brought a knife to a gun fight?" Well, in writing this review, I must acknowledge that I am probably bringing a tank to a knife fight. Consider yourself warned. Bistro 49 is a traditional American restaurant situated inside the Marriott hotel in Melville, NY. Now, maybe it isn't fair of me to review a hotel restaurant on the same standards I would expect during the normal course of my dining. But, do you know what? For $30 - $40 per head, I have some expectations. Considering that I lived in this hotel for about a month, I sampled the food here several times. I kept giving it second chances, like the cycles of an abusive relationship. Let's see what those chances got me: 1. Blue Moon Filet - An 8oz filet with a crust of peppercorns and blue cheese, with a side of "roasted vegetables and yukon gold mashed potatos." It sounded delicious to me on the menu. However, for "presentation" they brought the steak out on one of those sizzling cast-iron platters you would get fajitas on in a Mexican restaurant. It was exciting for about 10 seconds until it became obvious that the steak was going to continue to cook and my medium-rare became a tough medium-well. It didn't help that the steak itself was pretty uneventful with its flavor. It also didn't help that the platter was about 5 times bigger than the steak...which meant that the steak looked pathetic and the side dishes had to be all the way on the side of my plate. Roasted vegetables? No, try plain, unseasoned and steamed. The potatoes were epically bland. 2. After my first experience, I thought I'd give them a little bit of an easier task for the kitchen. I figured, I went in at a really odd time before so maybe my first impression wasn't fair. This time I ordered a grilled chicken salad. What their menu failed to mention was that if the chicken had actually ever touched a grill, it was not in the time immediately preceding your meal. That chicken was microwaved, no question. There was not a single black grill mark on it and it was dry, tough and flavorless. 3. Seriously, I gave them another shot, out of nothing but a need for convenience. Finally, I must have chosen wisely with the braised short ribs. This actually tasted pretty good and were cooked well, although the flavor choices were not very inspiring. But, alas, they still managed to spoil it with the same microwaved vegetables and bland (if not instant) mashed potatoes. Not to mention that the menu mentioned a horseradish crème fraiche that would be involved...but it was conspicuously missing from the final dish. 4. And again, I torture myself. For breakfast this time, since they had a pretty standard hotel breakfast bar with scrambled eggs, bacon, oatmeal, fruit...basic stuff like that. And all of that was exactly how I would have expected, but I was FLOORED to see that I had just paid $16 plus gratuity for a breakfast bar with almost no options. Their profit margin for breakfast must be astounding. But, despite all of this, I will allow the place to have 2 stars because the service there is still really great, despite the painfully unimpressive kitchen. read more

Having to stay at the Marriott, I had given this restaurant few tries. Each meal worse than the other. I think what took me back was how fast the food came out.. as if it had been pre-made and kept semi warm under a heat lamp. The turkey burger was a processed hockey puck. The Cali Chicken was completely dried out and oddly cut to fit the bun. and last the Seared Ahi Tuna ...lets just say not a great taste. Atmosphere was very nice. Servers looked lost and bored. First impression, it's pretty impressive. I mean you walk into a nice inviting environment they greet you, seat you and take your drink order. I ordered a glass of , they ask if it will be the 4or6 ounce, 6oz of course, Lol. Shortly sheet drink arrival, I order the Philly cheese steak. I just got in from a flight, so wanted something simple to unwind. It came out in a reasonable time, nice presentation. It was OK, could've probably used a tad bit more cheese. It came with your choice of sides, fries, side salad, or something else, can't remember. Anyway, the seating is comfortable with high take, couch, low take etc options. Overall, the waitress was attentive, and I liked the atmosphere. I'll be visiting again. Eat on! read more

The food is decent and the service is great, but you will definitely pay quite well for it. The rib-eye steak was cooked to order to a nice medium rare with a perfectly pink center, and it was pretty juicy and tender, albeit fatty. The accompanying side of roasted brussels sprouts was very good; the sprouts were seasoned and tender with just a hint of butter. The mashed potatoes were a bit salty so I didn't bother consuming more than a few bites, and the side salad was pretty standard with mixed spring greens, although I did like the Thousand Island dressing, which was more creamy than tangy. The cheese rolls were pretty good, too. Anyhow, it's about $40/entree, including tax and tip, but that's the price of convenience and maybe laziness, too. read more

The service is fine but beware how you order your meat - they seem to like to undercook their meat/good. I am traveling on business and ordered a burger for lunch, asked for it to be prepared "medium." I received a burger that was medium rare, which would have been fine but every time I went to take a bite the meat "smelled" rancid. I brought it to the managers attention whose response was, "it's because it's raw. " I did not order it to be raw, I ordered the burger medium which is a far cry from raw/rare/etc. Out of desperation and sheer hunger, I tried them for dinner. I ordered a NY Strip medium with a salad to start. I received everything at once - salad & entree. I cut into the steak and it was medium- rare. Again, I don't mind medium rare but if I order medium I expect medium (at least it did not smell rancid). I did not complain, as I may have to eat here again during my travels in Melville but I do wish there were better options nearby. read more

The bar staff was friendly to friends or frequent flyers. I had to ask to see a menu. The pot stickers were tasty but very cool to temperature. I decide not to indulge with anything else. They missed a very good opportunity for a easy going person. Hopefully, they will pay attention next time to everyone seated at the bar. read more

My second time coming to this disaster of a restaurant. Not only is this place way over priced but the food is horrendous. I travel a lot and stay a Marriotts or Ritz Carlton all over the world. I pay for quality and service and I don't mind paying the price if it deserves it. Clearly "the greatroom" does not. They are serving a very low quality product ( borderline expired) and the service is just awful. The Manager always has the answer but never the solution plus he is hardly working the floor. I have the Cobb Salad with Shrimp which was just terrible. The wilted lettuce and sliced burger style tomatoes, the shrimp was questionable and I was praying not to get sick the whole time I was eating. $25 for a terrible tasting Shrimp Cobb salad? Please! Where are we! It's Melville LI. Anyway the place sucks...bottom line. Don't say I didn't warn you! It's the only place to eat at the hotel and the hotel is in the middle of nowhere but if I were you, I would do everything possible not to eat at this place. read more
