We stumbled into this restaurant on Galentines Day (Feb 13) when it was pretty busy. The server was very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. Highlights were the avgolemono soup, triokafteri dip and taramasalata dip. The pita was warm with grill marks and spices. We also got the meat platter which was enough for four people! As long as this spot has been here, I can't believe I've only just tried it when I came with a friend who raved about this small, dimly-lit restaurant at Staples Mill and Broad. The service was super friendly. I ordered the kreatopita and a salmon salad. My friend got the spanikopita and eggplant parmesan. The kreatopita and spanikopita were plentiful! Wow, what a nice portion. I'd never had kreatopita before, but it's a meat-filled version of the phyllo dough stuffed appetizers. They were good. Might have been tastier (and more expensive) if they were stuffed with lamb instead of beef. The spanikopita were yummy. My favorite Greek thing, probably. My salmon salad was forgettable. Unfortunately, the salmon was overcooked, and the salad just didn't have much flavor, otherwise. I hate when salad tastes like water. Not sure why, but the lettuces had no flavor at all, and lettuce has flavor. My friend's eggplant parmesan was plentiful. Very large portion. He liked it. I tasted it, and it was just average. I'd probably come back to try the gyro, or for future orders of spanikopita and tiropita when I'm in the mood for standard Greek fare. read more

We were back again this past Thursday. Let's just say this is one of my favorites in Richmond. Upon entering for lunch we were greeted with smiles and sat immediately. Cat was there ready to serve us. She once again killed it for us. I had the Horiatiki Village Salad (Tomato Salad) and a side of fries. There fries are awesome. Crispy outside, soft pillowy inside and salty goodness. My coworker had the Spicy Lamb Burger special. He said it was great. Both brought the flavor and were very satisfying. I'm so glad I gave this spot a try! It was really good! The inside is nice and "date night" ready! My waiter was very attentive and helpful when it came to the menu. I ordered the pastichio, but was served moussaka instead. I didn't make a fuss because it was busy lunch time, and I like both. I was a little disappointed because I had my mouth set on the pastichio, but the moussaka was good! I also ordered the kreatopitas to go, which I've never had, and they were delicious. Like Greek egg rolls! Well I'm a week late posting this review, I can assure it's so good here I didn't forget the experience. If you haven't tried this place yet, what are you waiting for? Do it! The food is flavorful, consistent, and a nice variety. If you're fortunate to get Cat as your server then you are in for a treat! You can tell she likes her job and knows her stuff. A+ for service. Went there for a late lunch. It still reminded me of all the times I went to the Crazy Greek. Good lunch but a bit pricey.

I was visiting for work and one of my coworkers found this place. It was in a little bit of a rough area, but the restaurant itself was nice. The portion sizes are huge! One person ordered a meat plate, and it easily could have fed 3 people. I had the kebabs and got one lamb and one chicken, and I wasn't able to finish it all. Tip - get a reservation. They had room for us but said they were really too understaffed for us since we didn't have a reservation. We were a fairly large party though. read more

Nicer than it looks on the outside, this restaurant offers a nice range of Mediterranean dishes. I've been here a few times during visits to Richmond and highly recommend this restaurant. Service is friendly and efficient. The atmosphere isn't fancy but is still a very nice place to bring a date or spouse for a special occasion. The food is of course the mai reason for going and it is really good! Portions are very generous. I've had the pasticio which was flavorful. Personally I'd works have liked to see a bit more bachmal sauce on top. I have also had the baked spaghetti and it was outstanding! Picture a huge dish of spaghetti and meat sauce with a topping of gooey caramelized mozzarella cheese befitting of the best pizza and you have an idea about this dish. We made a same day reservation for five that was not on record when we arrived on time. They found it and said that someone had it on their phone and hadn't written it down. We agreed to wait 10 minutes while they prepared a table and 30 minutes later they told us it would be 10 more minutes. When we asked why they couldn't seat us at one of the many empty tables they said they were reserved. We had a reservation as well and for some reason the tables couldn't be rearranged. The manager then told us it wasn't his fault bc we made a same day reservation and that the owner took it and didnt write it down. We left as the manager was very rude and it was not clear we would ever get to eat. So I cant comment on the food. It looked good but after waiting over a half hr with my elderly parents and my brother on his birthday we did not like the way we were treated. read more

compare to a uprising food scene in Richmond, this place is more a traditional offering some traditional greek food. they have some traditional greek dishes but they are more tailored to american taste. I had the seafood pasta, the flavor was a little bland and the pasta itself feels a bit overcooked. the sauce is a bit runny doenst stick to to the pasta. the octopus appetizer only has two small tentacles, i would skip it unless you love it doenst care about the cost. the other maze dishes are also just so so , nothing really stood out. I dined at the Greek Taverna with my group of 4 friends and it was a delightful evening. The food was great -- we ALL enjoyed it. I personally had a side greek salad and Moussaka as my entree. I took half of my entree with me to eat later, it was so plentiful. Our group got hummus for an appetizer to share and we all enjoyed it. The server was attentive and friendly, and one thing our group liked was that the atmosphere was not so loud in this place that we couldn't have great conversation. They were so accommodating and they know how to run a restaurant - make small talk but don't hover, yet be attentive. My moussaka and yahni was heavenly - and huge. Friends had the souvlaki platter and the Greek spaghetti and the salad with salmon - everyone raved about the tastiness and the generous portions. We had leftovers and then some. I made it in about an hour before they closed for lunch and immediately it smelled a little funky in the restaurant but I couldn't put my finger on what the smell was. I got the calamari appetizer, a gyro with fries, and my friend got the same with a side Greek salad. The calamari was cooked well and were good sized pieces but could've used a little more seasoning. The marinara it came with was great though. The gyro was filled to the brim and the fries were nice and crispy. The only food complaint was the side Greek salad that was swimming in dressing it was almost inedible and soggy. Our server never came and gave us refills on drinks until the check came and we waited quite a long time for ketchup. read more

The Taverna Spaghetti is my usual hearty dinner pick, but I've yet to order a dish that wasn't completely delicious. It truly was the best pizza I have had in years featuring a nice thin, but delicate crust and the seasonings were perfect! We decided that we wanted to go out for dinner and try something new. My wife was given the important task of picking the cuisine and she chose Greek. I immediately hit the Yelpverse and started looking for Greek restaurants and came upon one that occupied an old Greek restaurants location. Not sure if they were related or not, but that really doesn't matter. Now on to the good stuff! To say that the service was excellent would be an understatement. Our server was amazing and even brought us out a sample of the rice pilaf. My wife ordered the Greek salad which was fantastic, and the lamb chops that were out of this world. Perfectly cooked. She also had a side of the Greek beans. It is important to note that they were fresh beans and not for McCann which made the taste even better. I had the big spaghetti that also had meatballs pepperoni and sausage in it the house makes their own sauce and it was arguably some of the best sauce I've had in a very long time. I was able to eat about a third of the dish and I'm looking forward to eating the other 2/3 over the next two days as the pasta will invariably soak in some of that delicious sauce. As a bonus, they have happy hour drink specials that you don't have to sit at the bar to enjoy. That is also applies to me. If you follow my reviews at all you know that I always rate a place based upon what they are trying to be. If this place is trying to be a small Greek restaurant is run by a passionate family that has a good taste in food, they knocked it out of the park! We had the special, handmade Chicken Spanakopita on a beautiful bed of rice pilaf. Outrageously good. Everything that came was high quality. Even the dinner bread tasted homemade and is delivered fresh from a bakery in Maryland. Finally, the service was way beyond expectations. We wanted for nothing the whole evening. This is a serendipitous gem! Being fairly new to the area and wanting Greek food, I was lucky enough to find this wonderful, chef owned restaurant. We were greeted,, seated, and immediately one of the most friendly AND competent waitresses brought our water and took our drink and app order. We were given a basket of the most delicious crusty rustic bread with olive oil/herb dipping sauce. We tried saganaki and grilled octopus for apps. Both delicious- the octopus was tender and served on a bed of tomato, red onion, and lettuce. We ordered the meat platter and Greek favorites platter for 2 adults and one child who eats like an adult and had a huge box of leftovers! These came with 4 sides!! We picked greenbeans, Greek potatoes, rice pilaf, and gigantes (kind of like a giant yummy Butterbean with savory sauce). The green beans were in a rich tomato sauce, potatoes lemony and crispy, rice pilaf tasty and fluffy and Gigantes buttery and perfectly seasoned! The meat plate had a variety of delicious meats: souvlaki, Greek meatballs, gyro meat, and homemade sausage with cool, garlicky tztiki also homemade. The Greek favorites platter had spanokopita, pasticio, dolmades, meat pie and moussaka with more tztiki. We accidentally got 2 pieces if pasticio, pointed it out, and moussaka immediately made it to the table. Desert was peanutbutter mousse with brownie which was heavenly! Not only was the food on point, but we had a nice chat with the owner Tula who came to our table. This is a shining example of how to run a restaurant and provide one of the BEST GREEK FEASTS EVER!!! The Greek version of bolognese sauce is often overpowering and unfamiliar for a lot of people because of all the cinnamon and cloves that go into it - but not here, it's more subtle.
