My husband and I came at 7pm on a Thursday, there were plenty of tables available. The server was super friendly and attentive to our needs. The food took a little while to come out but we suspected because it was made fresh and to order. My husband got the souvlaki with pork and I got the souvlaki pita with chicken, both were amazing. The tzatziki was soo good mixed with the veggies, chicken and pita and they did not skimp on portions. The potato and green bean sides were delicious as well. I would rate this establishment a "0" were it possible. A group of 7 of my closest family members and friends dined there tonight. Unfortunately, three of the meals were absolutely inedible. Both the pork and chicken souvlaki were terribly over cooked - so much so that they couldn't be pierced with a fork. Though these entrees couldn't be eaten, the proprietor offered is only half off of two entrees. It was a terrible dining experience from beginning to end. The keftethes appetizers were only lukewarm, and the server didn't even know what Metaxa was when I ordered drinks for the group. None of us plan to return. read more

Part of this meal was exceptional and the other was forgettable. The appetizers were delicious especially the flat bread. I could eat it every day. The calamari was very tender, I've never had calamari that wasn't a little chewy. The cheese flambé I could also eat every day although it was just cheese that was set on fire but it was good. Dinner, not so good. The spanakopita tasted like frozen spinach in phyllo dough, it had zero flavor. It needed feta cheese or something, it was the worst I've ever had. My boyfriend had the lamb which he thought was really good. Our companions had the pasta and did not like it. They took it home to see if they could doctor it up some to make it taste better. I didn't like the baklava, believe it or not it had too much filling and the phyllo dough needed a steak knife to cut through the bottom. read more

I was referred to The Athens Tavern by a friend and SO glad I went. I was there with three other guys and we had a wonderful dinner. Everything we got was excellent. My fave item was the Saganaki (a Greek cheese flambé ) but everything was delicious. The Athens Tavern is family owned and run, with Josie at the helm. She took it over from her Greek parents, who opened the restaurant in 1981 while she grew up, upstairs above the tavern. I only know all this because Josie is so outgoing and loves to chat with her diners. We also had a wonderful waitress that evening who was very attentive, had a great attitude and quick to smile. The moment I stepped through the doors I was whisked away across the sea to a place where the thick salt of the Aegean pierced my skin. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was eerily familiar... and then it struck me. I had been here before. Not in the physical space, but it's aura. The year was 2013, I had been partying day and night in Mykonos. After a particularly raucous evening at Cavo Paridiso, I found myself alone in the Temple of Poseidon watching the sun rise. There was a peaceful yet somewhat nerving silence. This silence is where Athens Tavern took me. Once I was seated I ordered the first drink that caught my eye, a Baklava Martini. Twist my arm why don't ya. As I awaited for my drink to arrive I received complementary bread which I indulged. As I gulped my sweet yet refreshing martini, I ordered the Spanikopita, yearning that first bite of spinach, feta Mx and phyllo. Oooohhhhh my gosh. We had this on a whim, as it's over 40 minutes away from us one way for take away. It was worth the drive! The portions were huge! My husband couldn't finish his. I had the zucchini fritters, chicken kabob and potatoes with a side of tzatziki. The fritters were amazing. I acknowledge that some people would consider them to be burnt based on my photo but they did not taste that way at all. There was a creamy texture on the inside and the outside was crispy. The taste was amazing. The chicken was perfect, not over cooked and dry. The potatoes were lemony and perfect. I'm picky about my tzatziki and it was perfect. Athens tavern is a little Greek hole in the wall that I will be visiting again soon. My girlfriend and I came in around 7 on a Friday night, and it wasn't very busy. The lighting is dim and there's music in the background that makes a cute ambiance. Tzatziki platter- Good, we asked for more pita for the tzatziki, and everything was fresh. It has been a long time since I had been to Athens Tavern. I was looking forward to a nice simple meal before heading out and in the end...it just wasn't there. The wait staff is nice, nothing bad to say there. The meal was slow in coming out, especially considering the number of people there. I had the Lamb Guvetsi and it was perfectly cooked but no sauce at all. It tasted wonderful but I could only get several pieces down and everything was just tasting dry. Tzatziki sauce was extra! I spent spent several weeks island hopping around Greece so naturally that makes me an expert! But I did learn firsthand what legit Greek food is supposed to taste like and this little spot could easily have been down a narrow cobblestone street in Athens! It's amazing and you need to go immediately! After a particularly grueling workout I was longing for some serious vegetables. I spent the better part of an hour looking up places on Yelp trying to figure out what I wanted before stumbling upon this place. I quickly decided I needed a salad and all the dips! So off I went by myself for dinner. I sat at the bar and was served by Sophia, the owners' daughter, who is adorable and super personable. She gave me some recommendations and I ordered. While I waited, she gave me a quick history of the restaurant. Originally her grandparents who came over from Greece opened this place but closed it and moved back to Greece. Her parents eventually decided to carry on the torch and reopened about two months ago! All of the recipes are authentic recipes from her grandparents and their family! And pretty much everything they can legally import from Greece they do! And you can tell! From the anchovies on the Greek salad which don't even taste remotely fishy and salty to the Greek feta that is so creamy it hurts your heart that you can't actually get this in stores! I had the aforementioned salad and the eggplant, fava, and tztiki dips and everything was superb. Definitely recommended! read more

Greek is my favorite food and I've been waiting to try an amazing Greek restaurant that isn't Stellas, since Stellas is always so crowded. The owner happened to be in the restaurant, family of the owner of Stellas, that night and her daughter served us. Josephine and Sophia were so friendly and helpful, we let them pick their favorites from the menu and we just sat back and enjoyed. The atmosphere was great and everyone was so friendly. I forgot to get a picture of the house salad and bread, but I would have been beyond satisfied with that as an entree. What a pleasant spot. Walked in for a quick dinner down the street, was in-out in less than an hour on a Sat night. Greek food at its simplest. House wines solid. Good apps, fried calamari, greek salad, bread & oil perfect for starters. Moussaka, souvlaki and pastichio with baked orzo were all very good and of robust quantities. Tasty & flavorful. It was my first time to the Athens Tavern! First off, if you put the place in mapquest, you won't find it! If you are familiar with richmond it's right across the street from Starbucks on Robinson! Back to my food review, their Greek food is very good and authentic! Our waitress recommend a few dishes that were family recipes which was great as well! I'm excited I don't have to wait another almost full year to go to my Greek fix at the Greek festival as I now have this restaurant as the perfect opportunity! We got the saganaki as our appetizer! It was my husband and I's first time to Athen's Tavern tonight. Although we weren't quite sure what to we expect, both the food and service were exceptional. Our server, Sophia, who happens to also be the daughter of the owners of Athen's Tavern, was very knowledgeable about the menu (obviously) and was attentive to us throughout our time there. She shared several recommendations -- including saganaki (flaming cheese appetizer) and makaronatha corfu (pasta with lamb and tomato sauce) -- which were both delicious. I've been here a few times and it is always great. Delicious food. Saganaki appetizer was amazing, and the Greek salad was very good. The entrees are great as well. Meatballs were cooked perfectly and also had a very good noodle dish. Portion size is very good. As for drinks, it is always nice to see authentic Greek beers - especially Yellow Donkey!
