It was a nice evening out we walked down after a show from the orpheum .. the FISH was good!

I got the chance to enjoy lunch at the Green Beetle for the first time. I visited after College Game Day and pleased to see that it wasn't packed inside by the time we arrived. The Green Beetle was a nice little dive bar that's located right on Main St and actually within walking distance of Beale(pleasant walk on a pretty day!) We took a seat right away and the server came over immediately aftewards. My husband was looking forward a large portion, so he ordered the Chili Burger, I ordered the catfish and my son ordered the South Main Burger. It did not take long for the orders to come out. The Chili Burger was huge and my husband loved it. My catfish was good, but definitely not the best that I've had. (It was a little on the soft side.) The cajun tartar sauce that came with it was spicy, but very good. My son told me that the burger was in his top 5 and asked if we could come back soon. We loved the fact that there was a good number of TV's in the restaurant that had various football games playing. Overall, the service that we received was great and everyone was pleased with their selection. I do recommend! read more

Our valentines plans fell through and we needed somewhere to eat. Had heard about the burgers at this place and decided to give it try. The waitress staff was friendly and gave good recommendations. We got the pimento cheese burger and the jalapeño burger. We enjoyed both of our burgers and talked about them the next day. The bun is sourdough which made it even more unique. Whenever I'm in town I make it a point to stop in The Green Beetle. It was my go to bar when I lived in Memphis and still is when I come back to visit. Located right on "Mane" street it's a central spot to everything downtown. Parking is generally easy and it's a short walk to all the major downtown attractions, Beale St., FedEx forum, Orpheum theatre, civil rights museum, etc. It's also a great patio spot on nice evenings with multiple tables out front to people watch and catch the trolleys passing by. Food and drinks! I've honestly never ordered food here that wasn't good. They do daily specials and happy hour that are budget friendly but overall the food/drinks are not expensive. My favorite on the menu is the Sly's South Main burger. Basically everything in the kitchen they throw on this burger, tater tots, bacon, cheese, and topped with an egg! But what I really love about this burger is the sourdough bun Man it soaks up all of the flavors rockin on this burger and delivers a delicious bite each time you sink your teeth into it! For a dive-ish bar their beer menu is vast. Good amount of local beers and all the favorites. I usually get the Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan unless it's a PBR patio day drinking kinda day! This is a cool place with a dive bar atmosphere. If you go, have the catfish - it was _excellent_! The fries were okay, but the catfish...YUM!!! The Green Beetle is a decent-sized place. The main area is a hall with a wooden-beam peaked ceiling, sort of like a lodge in a European mountain (which surprised me after all the usual flat-ceilinged and more industrial places visible as I walked around the area). There's plenty of seating inside at assorted tables and a small bar, and there's a small area of tables in front of the restaurant as well. Several TVs are located high on the walls. A lively (weekly?) poker night was under way when we visited for dinner, but the players didn't seem to mind us. The staff was friendly, efficient, and helpful. read more

Good bar food and quick service. I've walked past this place a million times and decided to go here on a busy day downtown. They have a good selection of bar food. Mostly burgers and sandwiches. Everything I've had is good. The fries are awesome. Service was great the 2 times I've been now. It's a wonderful porch weather restaurant. They will open the entire storefront to south main so you can watch the foot traffic and trolleys. I'd recommend for anybody looking for a more relaxed environment than anything on Beale. read more

My fellow gastro explorers, I'm late to the game! If you're an M-town Native you probably already know about The Green Beetle. If you don't or you're an adopted son like me then read on. I have a friend and former co-worker who is Memphis bred and knows Memphis like he taught local history at Lemoyne-Owen and wrote a doctoral dissertation at Memphis State. I asked him if he would take me on a tour of all the historical neighborhoods in Memphis after I printed out a many paged listing of them. He said, "How soon?" We decided on the following Tuesday morning giving him a weekend to prepare. On Tuesday we decided to start Downtown; Harbor Town, Edge District, Pinch, Greenlaw, Speedway Terrace and more. After 6 hours we decided to call it a day before the rush hour started and get something to eat. I told my guide to pick the restaurant. He headed towards South Main and parked. We got out and I followed him into The Green Beetle. The restaurant has a rectangular dining room with the entry on one short end and the bar and kitchen opposite. It feels like a neighborhood pub. Not a bar but a very eclectic and character filled venue with a homey vibe. There is outdoor seating on South Main should you choose to take in the air and views. The upper walls are lined with flat screens and the decorations are unique and bespoke to the restaurant in the most charming way. My friend told me that I must try a burger. I obliged and settled on the Shroom, bacon and Swiss burger cooked medium and substituted tater tops for the accompanying fries with Philly steak topping both for an upcharge. Let me tell you that I can not wait to go back and try another cooked to order burger from The Green Beetle. It was absolutely juicy and flavorful. One of the best burgers I've had in awhile. I also don't prefer to have a juicy but grease filled burger that has juice running down the front of my shirt and takes a roll of paper towels to eat it. The burger was juicy but not messy like that. Perfect. The specialty burger offerings are extensive so I'm excited to try several and the rest of the menu as well. Fun dive bar atmosphere styled in a "lodge-core" theme with a good selection of bar food & drinks. Burger menu options are varied, interesting, and delicious. Staff was friendly but also busy with many tables. Situated right in the part of downtown where its not right on Beale, but its also not too far from it; surrounded by trendy neighborhood area with a lot of street art. Outside seating is available, tends to get pretty busy regularly on weekend afternoons. The Green Beetle provides a nice break to any local tired of the usual grunge bar scene found in Memphis. Went on a hot July afternoon. When we got there, we were the only people in there besides staff. The usually darkish bar was brightly lit on a super sunny and hot day. While I have been before, this time we were looking to eat and have some drinks. The bartender was ok, I asked which burger he would choose between the two I had my eye on and he said the burgers were all the same besides the toppings. Ok. No shit. Basically I was just asking if there was a standout. The food gets there and I had high hopes because the bun was perfectly toasted and soft, but soon discovered that it came out so quickly because zero love went into cooking the $18 burger. Had little to no seasoning on the burger itself and the toppings were slim. The standout here was the fries. The bartender was attentive, but again, even by the time we left, it was the two of us and one other customer, I will definitely go back, but I will stick to the drinks. read more

I have been meaning to write a review of this place for a while now....I even started on it several times. This place feel super authentic. Its got all the soulful feel of a very Memphis establishment, but without the dirt and grime of an old bar. I am trying to think of a place that has a similar quality and the only thing I can come up with is like The Rendezvous...but this plac eis smaller and more homey. Great employees, great food, atmosphere is perfect day or night...especially if the weather is nice and the doors are all open to Main. The regular menu is wonderful but the specials are even better especially when they have the occasional cheap steaks for lunch. Other choices I have loved were the burgers, great blackened chicken, great fries, great onion rings, nachos were delish, and of course a good beer selection! Sound good, right? For starters, the Rotel tots are a must have when dining at The Green Beetle. Just make sure you're leaving room in your stomach for whatever else it is you're having. Service is fast paced and upbeat. Paying attention to any special accommodations asked for and responding with a "Yes we can." We went at lunch time and really enjoyed the bright atmosphere. It was nice enough for us to sit outside and they have some patio furniture out there in front of the restaurant. For starters we ordered the french onion dip (which came with Ruffle potato chips) and fried green tomatoes. Both were delicious. For lunch I had the bacon jam patty melt and it ROCKED!! A cooked to order burger with American cheese, grilled onions, cajun tartar, and house made bacon jam between two pieces of Texas toast. It was so frickin' good!! Our waitress was super helpful and made sure we had our drinks and food promptly for us. The burger I had was amazing while the 'little' sandwich my girlfriend had was not so little! What a great old bar with some really good food! It's rich in history and in a great part of downtown that has really surged forward in recent years. South Main can almost be as packed as Beale on some nights. Each time I've been I've gotten such a really cool laid back feeling while being there. One time they had a couple guys performing at the front and they were great. The servers are attentive, friendly, and efficient. They give you just enough room without you ever having to look for them. I've had the Bandito Burger and the Catfish. Both were shockingly good for the total Dive Bar setting. The burger was one of the best I've had. Juicy, seasoned well, cooked perfectly, and presented like a place that would demand $20+ for a burger. It was beautiful! The Catfish was excellent! The breading was almost perfect and the fillets were the size of my hand! (I have a size twelve shoe) Seriously, they were huge! Tasted incredible too! The mashed potatoes and Mac and Cheese are homemade and damn tasty. They have big thick steak fries as well! They have a great local beer selection and a full bar. My only gripe is they only had one IPA to choose from, Lagunitas... Boo! I'll be back!!! read more

All I can say is, if you go downtown...and go down there often...and you haven't dropped in to the Green Beetle then you're missing out. Just to walk through the door and see the setup. You can feel the history. As for the food...they have plethora of items to choose from. Not your average Pub fare either. The word around town is that the food here is some of the best and the word was right! So, all in all, make a trip to the Green Beetle and get something good to eat. If you're not from Memphis and you want to experience just a small part of Memphis' historic spots around downtown, then drop in and see for yourself. Cool place, great staff, awesome food. Visiting town on business, the hotel recommended the Green Beetle for catfish. Great atmosphere! Covid thinned out the indoor seating - still plenty on the sidewalk. We ate inside with sufficient distancing! The beer was great, the food was excellent, and the service was fantastic. Catfish was breaded just right - crispy on the outside and tender & flaky inside. Maybe the smaller crowd allowed more time for each guest. In any case, we were very satisfied with the whole experience. read more

Went to The Green Beetle at the suggestion of someone who had been here before. There is minimal parking in front of the store so we parked down the street and walked up. The signs are kind of off of the street some, so they are easy to miss. Once inside, we seated ourselves. It didn't take long for a waitress to bring menus and ask for our drink orders. I was not really a fan of the Arnold Palmer I was brought, so the waitress brought out another drink for me. I ordered the catfish. It was delicious. The fries weren't hot, but I figure they came out of the grease before the catfish did so i was ok with that. As for ambience, there is a diner feel. There are TVs for viewing. Good thing was that all of the TVs weren't showing the same thing. I could watch various sporting events while I ate. We sat close to the storefront so we could see people walking by. It was too chilly to sit outside on the patio, but I can imagine sitting out there on a warmer day would be nice. read more
