Had out of town friends in from TC and suggested the Green Top Tavern to get a taste of authentic Kalamazoo. I've been many times and usually pay cash, however we all paid by CC. My friend was studying her bill pretty deep and asked if I could understand it. She ordered 2 single shot well drinks and 2 double shot well drinks, when I questioned the bill with the guy server- he proclaimed that the way it is run in the system, that it was correct and that my friend ordered 3 double shot drinks and 1 single shot, to which we explained what she really had, then the girl server intervened, I tried to explain and she accused me of yelling at her... we decided to just pay it as we needed to get home, but want to see what everyone else thinks. read more

Went for a birthday party and had a great time!! It was kinda loud but that's to be expected from a downtown dive. Not tooooo dive-ish though. I was visiting a friend in Michigan, and we went into Kalamazoo deciding to stop at a random bar. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibes were very weird, bartenders and patrons apparently yell at each other and throw things at each other.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was slow, drinks weren't that great. I later found out from a different friend who lived in the city previously that this is one of the creepiest bars in Kalamazoo, and has a reputation for drugs being put into people's drinks (not fun kinds, and not consensually either). My friend and I ran into one of the bartenders who served us at a different place later in the night, and he was a huge d-bag. Would not recommend. read more

RIDICULOUS experience with crappy service. I ordered a very simple Tito's vodka and soda. I swear there was no vodka in the drink, so I went back to let her know I wasn't happy with my drink. She charged me full price AFTER adding another shot to my drink. So, really had no choice, because then I would not have my original drink. We've loved Green Top for years (mostly for the drinks and ambiance) and now with the current situation we are in, our outdoor seating options have become limited. Get yourselves down to Green Top! They have an enviable outdoor area with heaters in place and all protocols being followed. We went there last Friday with the intention of taking advantage of walking around downtown whilst carrying our adult beverages. We never ended up walking around because their setting there was so appealing! Beautiful outdoor lighting, just enough people outside having loud, conversations, tables far enough away from each other, outdoor heaters blasting...it made us feel like things were back to "normal" again. We all need to feel like that every once in a while. It was pretty amazing. Drinks were excellent and my husband was hungry, so he ordered "The Chub". Delicious slow roasted pot roast on pretzel bun with provolone cheese and horsey sauce. We ordered it with onion rings *chef's kiss* just spectacular! What a great night out! I had a nice time with friends that I don't frequently see; we stopped to have a few drinks. I can't say I was super impressed for a bar, I didn't see a pool table but apparently there's one hidden in there. There was live music and a music box though. We sat at a table that was messy and when I set my arm down on the table my arm was soaked in whatever liquid was left on this table. The size of this location is very small so it's hard to hear your company over loud frat-guys shouting to one another, there's nothing in there to soak up the sound at all. First off I have to give The Green Top Tavern props. Every bar crawl that I've attended, I am not surprised when I see this business. They welcome the fun and keep the crowd energized all night. From their friendly staff, to the atmosphere, and drinks. The Green Top Tavern is one of my favorite bar crawl stops. They always have some witty comeback when I bring up a blender as well. Besides a few rocks and the fire water is all I really need. Here is where I got an old fashioned so good. I ended up with two before five minutes passed. The cocktail I had was really good as well. Plenty fruity like I liked and didn't skimp on the good stuff. Unfortunately or fortunately, I don't remember that drink because of those old fashioned. Surprisingly I remembered one drink at all. I wish more places were like The Green Top! I was in Kalamazoo for the night, and was looking for a casual bar to have a few drinks and good time. We spotted TGT and headed straight for the door. This place fit the bill perfectly. It had a pool table, a juke box, several TVs and plenty of seating. We were greeted pretty promptly by out server. I got the idea that this place is run by an elderly couple, as they were the only two servers that night. Food is decent, drinks are cheap and you get to pick your own music! Great for us (except when some drunk college girls blasted Rhianna). Last call was ridiculously early in my book. I went to the bar to get another round around 12:50AM and the man behind the bar just shook his head and said they already had last call. "She should have come and told you it was last call." Since no one had come to our table to let us know, I was surprised. A few minutes later our serve came over to apologize for not giving us last call and offered to get us a beer. She brought it over on the house for the inconvenience. It was really a nice gesture! All in all: If I'm ever back in "the Zoo" I'll be back to The Green Top! read more

This place is near and dear to my heart. It's nothing fancy but it's a breath of fresh (well maybe not so fresh) air in the midst of all the other Wild Bulls and Wine Lofts that reside in Downtown Kalamazoo. If you're just looking for a cold beer minus the frills, the Green Top is the place. The bartenders are unfriendly, the bathrooms are a bit scary, and who knows, you may even get your very own song dedicated to you as I once did by some random old man chatting it up at the bar. It's a good place for some day drinking and the night crowd is very eclectic. The only downfall for some is they close at 1am instead of 2am. read more
