Breakfast is the best in New Haven. Along with the delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner is very tasty. It is nothing fancy, but it never disappoints. On top of having delicious food the prices are very affordable. In my opinion, there is nothing on the menu that is overpriced. I recommend giving this place a chance if you are ever in New Haven. The menu is extensive so it took a minute for us to order. Everyone had water to drink. Our server brought us some fresh yeast rolls that were hot and tasty. We had the fried green tomatoes appetizer for the table. They were excellent served with sour cream and horseradish and ranch that we had to ask for additionally. Everyone ordered something different. Orders included: 1. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, and cole slaw. I only tried their cole slaw which leans more to a vinegar base and I prefer a sweeter slaw. There were 4 pieces of chicken. 2. Meatloaf with mashed potato and gravy and cornbread. Cornbread was a bit dry, meatloaf was ok. 3. Mushroom and bacon smothered chicken, onion rings and cornbread. Person said the chicken was a bit dry, the mushrooms and bacon saved the dish. Onion rings were good, crispy and hot. 4. Chicken and dumplings with cornbread. Folks that tasted them said they make better at home, nothing special. 5. Rueben sandwich with corn pudding. Sandwich was just ok. Bread was too thick for my taste, beef was tender. Corn pudding was excellent, hot, creamy. Service was good, resturant quaint, street parking. The train rolling by, blowing the whistle while we ate was a nice touch, although it rattled the building. After we ate, got to go containers and paid we shopped at the adjacent and across the street shops to the resturant. That was fun. After shopping we headed back to the restaurant for coffee and dessert. Again each of us had a different dessert item which included: coconut cream pie, butterscotch pie, derby pie, chocolate sundae cake and the house specially, butter cream pie. All were pretty good. We all liked the house speciality pie, it was super sweet, creamy with a good crust. Coconut pie was a favorite as was the chocolate sundae cake. The derby pie was way too chocolatey for most of us. It is a cute little little resturant with a homey feel that will take you back in time. One of those places where you should try but then say, did that, don't necessarily need to revisit.

It is located at the entrance to the Cottage Grove neighborhood, where I live. I would describe it as your typical local establishment that probably gets their food from SYSCO or GFS. The menu is wide, but not deep. Its standard fare food that is good but nothing special. We typically order carry-out as it is easy to go around the corner and get it. I've had several menu items and they are all good, just nothing outstanding. The burgers, ribeye sandwich, and chef salad are pretty good. If you get a salad get the ranch dressing. They make their own. It's a mint green color but don't let that deter you. It's some of the best ranch dressing I've had. Don't pass on this. The steak is about Texas Roadhouse quality or just a notch under, but it is priced accordingly. It's not really seasoned in any way like TRH, which is what drops it a notch. The cod fish sandwich is good and flavorful with a thick cut piece of cod. But its only big enough to take up half of the sandwich. (See picture). It really needs two pieces of fish, or to switch to an oblong bun. I'm a big Hot Brown fan and have had them from many places. The one here is alright. The "special cheese sauce", as it is called on the menu, is ok, but it's not the creamy mornay sauce I see on most Hot Browns. I still order it from time to time if I'm in the mood for a hot brown when we are ordering from there. It's like everything else on the menu - not bad, but not great either. Order accuracy on carry-out orders can be inconsistent. For example, with the fish sandwich I recently ordered I specifically said without lettuce and tomato but said to make sure to include the tartar sauce. I ended up getting lettuce and tomato and no tarter. It's not the first time this kind of thing has happened on our carry-out orders. The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice and inviting. The decor is nice but starting to show its age. The exterior was just cleaned up and refreshed. When we have eaten there we've had varying qualities of service depending on who the server is, but overall I'd say it is good. If you go there with the right expectation that nothing is really going to "wow" you, but that you'll get a decent meal at a fair price, you'll be quite happy with it.
