Reasonably good food, nice atmosphere, but watch out for the "event" fee. The food is good (not outstanding) and reasonably priced for the atmosphere; however, we had a reservation for 12 people for lunch which apparently moves you to "event" status. That comes with a $250 "event" surcharge and only a $250 event surcharge. No table decorations, no special service, nothing. Lunch entrees are priced $13-$24, so when you throw in the 18% gratuity that kicks in at 6 or more, we were looking at $50+/person for a sandwich, fries, and non-alcoholic beverage!? When they brought the check, they pointed out the event fee and indicated it had been discussed at the time of reservation. First: Roger is the best. He made our trio feel at home - as we should feel (I was born in sF) . I have to share that I'm a lighter shade of brown... AND I coordinated this outing with my friends. On our arrival I greeted a lounge staff who immediately engaged my blond blue eyed friend who had nothing to do with our patronage. On a second attempt to be front and center in an outing I had arranged and continued to be dismissed I stepped back realizing if I wanted to have a good time I had to push that garbage aside. Ambience is about four star. How can anyone top the view from The Grill looking over the Wente course? But the food remains mediocre, with the exception of the burger and maybe the grilled shrimp Caesar. If you go, go for the views, the peace and possibly the wine. I'm going to be honest... these 2 little stars that I'm giving this restaurant is me being GENEROUS! Please thank your hostesses for the extra star! Moving right along... I came here with a group of friends after hiking Del Valle and doing a tasting at the Wente tasting room. We really wanted to eat at the actual restaurant, but the wait was just too long. So, we opted for lunch at the grill instead. Luckily we didn't have to wait at all, and they sat us at a table outside. Our server seemed pretty new but we gave him the benefit of the doubt. Two of us ordered a cheeseburger and my other friend ordered the black bean burger. The view from the patio is really pretty. You can see the large golf course on the Livermore hill and some of the Vineyards from the wineries in the background. But, we couldn't fully enjoy this view because we kept swatting flies and bees away from our table. It got even worse when our food finally arrived. Speaking of food, it took entirely too long for it to finally arrive at our table. We waited 30+ minutes and they still ended up forgetting about my friend's black bean burger. By the time we asked about her order, we were already done eating what was edible off of our plates, and she was just ready to go home at that point. The burgers we received were completely unacceptable! They arrived overcooked and terribly dry. The fries were engorged in a heaping amount of salt. Neither of us could finish this meal because it was so unappetizing. In the end, one person never received her meal and the rest of us received a terrible meal. Both scenarios were deplorable, and I left extremely disappointed by this experience. I will most likely never return to the grill. Depressing return to the Grill. I used to love this place. But my meal today was just gross. And the thing is, I'd tried to avoid it being gross- which made it even worse. So I ordered the burger with the egg on it. I asked if the egg could be cooked hard- because I don't want to eat raw egg. And the waiter told me, and I quote, "They only come one way." I said, "Is that way cooked?" and he said, "Yes." Well, when I get my burger, there's a bit of clear egg dripping down the side- yeah- clear. Uncooked white of the egg. Gross, right? Now if I hadn't specifically mentioned not wanting an uncooked egg, I guess, maybe, I could overlook that. But I specifically mentioned it. And that's gross even if I hadn't mentioned it. She just messed up an opportunity for you to generate some revenue and gain a potential return customer. I made a confirmed reservation a few days in advance, for Outdoor seating on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at 1:00 pm. When I got there, I mentioned my reservation to the hostess. Looking outside, there are several tables outside in direct sunlight, with the umbrellas completely closed. It's the middle of the day and uv levels are climbing. The "hostess" says to us we can sit inside or sit at one of the tables in the sun. She then literally says she "can't open an umbrella for us ". Ridiculous. Worst customer service experience of my entire life. Totally wasted my time driving here. I was about to blow $100 bucks but instead, we walked out and ended up in some random taqueria. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the 18th on a sunny day just doesn't get any better. The wine, beer, and cocktail choices are plentiful for a small restaurant. The server was very knowledgeable and personable and helped us problem solve our menu choices. We ordered baked potato fries and we each ordered different burgers. Both were well prepared and very tasty on a soft brioche bun. The mimosa was also excellent. The only small suggestion is the fries should have a bit more sour cream. While it's a little pricey, the Grill has great food from top to bottom. The burgers are fantastic, the tuna melt tasty, and the mini taco starter platter was really a pleasant surprise. While you can share the mini tacos, the plate is a great standalone dish for lunch as well. The pastrami sandwich is also a good choice. Now, add Wente wines or well mixed cocktails and you're off and running. The view overlooking the 18th green is spectacular. Service is very good with a friendly vibe. The food here is good. The views from the grill is very scenic and you can see the golf course. We were a large group and they accommodated us to sit outside on patio which had heaters & kept us all warm on a cold day. Their 1883 special burger was just amazing. Also, our kids got the pancakes and hotdog which was good. We also got the Bockwurst sausage which was yummy! The staff here is much more friendlier than the staff in tasting room. I was excited to grab a reservation from Open Table for 4:30pm for dinner. It turns out they do not have dinner at 4:30-7:00pm, which is quite obnoxious. The menu has a burger and a sandwich on the menu and when I asked if they had a vegetarian option, the server at the counter said they didn't. I asked if the food was pre-made or if they made it in the kitchen and he confirmed that they cook the food in the kitchen. So i asked to get a sandwich or the burger without the meat. The server said that won't amount to much and I should just buy a bag of chips. I asked if he could just make me a sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes and cheese or whatever veggies they had. He confirmed that they did put those in the burger but wouldn't take the order. When I asked if he can confirm inside if they really couldn't make it, he went back inside and came out and reiterated that. He wasn't rude but wasn't friendly and didn't offer any explanation why he wouldn't take my order. Someone sitting outside sympathized and said he was surprised they wouldn't accommodate. I've now been here for the breakfast, and it was absolutely wonderful since my family and I had a great view of the golf course and the beautiful hills while we ate. I was surprised at how disappointing Wente's restaurant is as compared to their spectacular winery. I heard this drop in quality happened after the head chef left and after their change in direction came into action (shifting from fine dining to modern and approachable). Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of trying their original chef's menu. However, we ordered thai wings, beef stew, ragu, and a few other appetizers that were so unimpressive that I can't even recall the name. The Thai wings were dry, flavorless and had some sweet chili sauce mixed in. As an Asian, it was almost a disgrace to eat it and feel proud of it--especially given how much we paid for it! That was definitely a plate that was worth less than $5 given the ingredients and the sheer lack of skill required to make it so dry. The beef stew was also flavorless and tasted like canned soup. On top of that, it was served in a pot where the soup was so shallow, we could see majority of our whole serving spoon exposed. There was so little in the pot and definitely not worth it. The ragu was just your run-of-the-mill, average-at-best ragu. Definitely had better. The servers' care for customers and attention to their surroundings were subpar and their treatment was borderline rude. The only reason why we tipped such an absurdly large amount was because someone at our table forgot to take the change. If you buy wine on the estate, its possible they will let you open it without a corkage fee. The wine is spectacular, but this isn't a review about their wine. It's about their food. Wente, please do something about matching the quality of your food to your wine! read more

Just realized that I never left a review for The Grill, despite eating here for many years. It's my "go to" spot for lunch or brunch on a sunny day after or during a drive in one of my sports cars with the top down. Best to arrive early, around 11, before too many golfers completing their round or other diners arrive, in order to grab one of the umbrella shaded tables closest to the 18th hole. The view and setting for dining al fresco is the best in Livermore Valley and, I dare say, the entire Bay Area. The next best thing would be the balcony at Auberge du Soleil in Napa. I don't go to The Grill for the food but what they serve is quite acceptable for lunch/brunch. They have a wide selection of wines, of course, and offer a rotating selection of craft beers on tap. Frankly, it doesn't get much better than this for dining outdoors on a warm and sunny day. You can also I dine al fresco at The Restaurant, located nearest the entry gate. I have not visited yet since it's conversion into a tapas bar but, from what I've read about it on Yelp, you'll get a better and cheaper meal at The Grill and I know that the view and ambiance will be better by far. read more

My goodness, this was an extraordinary lunch! We were initially disappointed that the Wente restaurant was completely booked but the concierge advised us to walk across the parking lot to the Wente golf course and we could have lunch there. After a many-mile bike ride, we were in no position to complain! The outdoor patio seating is spacious and comfortable. There are overhead heaters if you need them. The view is peaceful. The food portions are incredibly ample... robust actually. I especially recommend their specialty appetizer... a warm spinach/artichoke dip with warm pita slices. The hamburgers are monumental and delicious. We all like them medium and so they came... perfect. One of their special hamburgers comes topped with a fried egg, sunny-side up. Very unique and delicious. The beer selection was satisfactory and the coffee was free! The restaurant and restrooms are spotless. The parking lot is huge. The shop which you can stroll through on your way in and out of the restaurant offers truly outstanding and first-class merchandise. Unfortunately, I have a serious issue with their outdoor furniture, thus the loss of one star. Their table tops are made of a very porous stone and I disliked the thought f bacteria harboring in the millions of little crevasses. Was disappointed with menu selection. Seemed limited. My husband and I enjoyed a beautiful afternoon with a bottle of wine and a bite to eat. Unfortunately the grilled chicken on my Cesar salad was inedible. It was so dry and over cooked it was more like shoe leather. Ate the greens left the chicken. A group of us stopped by the Wente Grill before our concert at 8:00 pm. The place was pretty packed with concert goers and golfers so there was a good wait but the staff worked supremely hard to get all the customers seated, fed and off to the concert before the first note went off. The staff delivered personalized, proficient service in spite of the large surge of patrons. We all split some appetizers and had some Wente wine. The prices are pretty much standard golf resort prices. Notables include zesty wings, artichoke dip/pita bread, bacon/brie flatbread pizza and seasoned fries. I've always been a fan of Wente Pinot noir...it's always in my rotation. The seasonally-driven menu offers clubhouse fare with a California flare featuring artisan burgers, salads, sandwiches, tacos and other grill favorites. Absent are any seafood selections (no calamari, fish tacos, etc.). Try the warm baked artichoke dip. Everyone loved it...so warm, creamy and satisfying! If you're looking for something a little more upscale head to the neighboring Wente Restaurant which features steaks, fish, ciopinno and pastas and a more fine dining experience. The Grill boasts beautiful views of the Wente golf course and surrounding mountains. The oversized patio gives diners a perfect spot to take in the relaxing views and catch the sunset. We all appreciated the restaurant staff for accommodating all the influx of customers and working tirelessly to serve and fuel everyone. Today was the very first time in my life that a server refused to take one quick photo for me. Since Janan, the server, said she was too busy to take a photo of me and my boyfriend, I went inside and asked the bartender to. He was very gracious (although busy) and came outside from behind his bar to snap some photos. We tipped him generously. We usually ate at the Restaurant at Wente but to our disappointment, they changed the menu to a prix fixe with wine pairings. Since we ride our bikes on the trails, it is more comfortable to go to an a la carte casual menu. We decided to try the Grill for the first time. What a cool find this was! You just need to walk/bike past the main restaurant and it is attached to the pro shop on the golf course. We ordered the smoked chicken salad and the artichoke starter with flatbread. Both choices were just excellent! The chicken on the salad was slightly smoked and the greens were so fresh. The artichoke dip was bubbling hot when it came to the table so good! We also ordered a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc which was perfect on a warm day. The view is beautiful and very relaxing and the service was just perfect. We ordered the wedge salad and they used romaine instead of iceberg (they must have run out but didn't give us a chance to change our order). The dressing was this watery mess. No tomatoes, no bacon, no red onion. We also ordered crab cakes that tasted like frozen baked ... tiny sized and mushy center... no sign of any crab that one would expect to see or taste if freshly prepared. It was our lucky day though, because our order had just been completed when they lost power. Parking was a breeze and a nice drive though wine country to get there. The Grill is attached but and the golf pro shop. Great outdoor seating is available and inside also. The hostess seated us immediately inside as it was a fairly hot day. The waitress approached us quickly, welcomed us and presented menus. We of course ordered wine. Lunch menu was varied and everyone found something to eat without hesitation. Food was delicious and prompt. I would visit again on a cooler day and sit outside.
