I get it, per state law you must eat something in order to purchase alcohol. The only food item they had to offer though was a hot dog. If we still wanted to drink, the bartender offered that we order delivery & have it delivered to the bar BUT if we did that we would still have to pay for the hot dog we didn't eat. Huh? Please add more food items to your menu - it's not feasible to spend the additional money on a delivery service charge, the tip for the driver, AND the money for the hot dog which I wouldn't even have eaten. Went bowling Thursday night with my friends and I enjoyed myself. The place is alittle dark inside but the drinks are good. I just wished the screens where more up to date with the score and also I wished they had hot food they would make a KILLING trust me but the place is convenient the prices aren't bad. Completely agree with the other experiences described below citing staff as "night shift are kind of lazy and boring." and "The guy working the shoe swap has smallest amount of emotional intelligence I have ever experienced in a grown ass adult." The staff is at least 4 people all getting a power trip from working at an overpriced decrepit bowling alley. The balls and pin re setters constantly got stuck and we had to ask them to fix it several times during our session. Every time they'd roll their eyes and take 5+ minutes to fix it. They lied about refunding us and only refunded 25$ while being terribly rude to us and the others behind us. This isn't how you run a business and I hope that at some point they'll see that. On the other hand, I think they enjoy the little glimmer of power they get working behind the counter so it's unlikely that there will be any improvements. Go to Brooklyn Bowl instead and put money in a business that isn't run by people too hungover to be decent to customers. read more

This is a cool spot to go to for late night bowling! I came with a friend at 11pm and we played til about 1:30am. They had a deal where if you bought two you get two games for free, so opted for that option. Playing was fun, however their equipment is outdated and when we were trying to keep score it would often malfunction so one person would have 3 turns and then it would skip a persons turn. This happened in all 4 games, we pretty much stopped keeping track after the first game. Then it was unclear how many games, because it was shut off by the attendant. friend and i went in there for a drink tonight. had my bicycle so asked if we could park it inside cause i've had my bike stolen recently. bartender said yes. we ordered a round and his manager came in hot and told me i had to move my bike. if you've been there before, you know that it's a huge space. and tonight, there was no one. she was freaking out and said i had to move the bike. i was totally ok with moving the bike but asked her why because she was pretty frenetic. she said it was for security reasons even though there was a tremendous amount of space. when i asked for her name l, she said she doesn't give out her name even though she was the manager. she was asian in heritage and had short blonde hair. so at this point i'm pretty frustrated and am talking to my friend about her after i move my bike and am finishing my round. the bartender told me to get over it as he was listening to us. and i wasn't trying to be quiet because i wanted him to hear my frustrations. i'm not trying to be a dick but wished they could have handled the situation better. it's a customer service oriented business and they didn't really handle it well. i wouldn't got back there and feel that they are a bit entitled. but that's just my opinion. cheers. read more

I've been here several times and both times had the same experience ...not shabby at all. This is a laid back place with a pool table and a few games off to the side ..the main attraction is the bowling lanes for which the majority of patrons come for. With that said, prepare for a good wait. You take a number and patiently wait for you number to come Up. All while waiting you can indulge in some Libations at the bar and hope that the company you're with is good at conversation, because You will be waiting for a while. If you're lucky enough, you can kill time at the pool table which is 1 dollar in case quarters. The drinks are decently priced which doesn't make it unbearable while waiting for your turn at bowling. I paid 45/hr on a weekend ...prices for weekdays are slightly cheaper. You also pay a price for shoe rentals which is $2. The lanes are old school but so fun. Despite Brooklyn Bowl's assault on The Gutter's North Brooklyn beer and bowling hegemony, this spot is definitely still more my speed. I feel like it's home, because they know me. The girl manning the bowling booth knows to give me and only me velcro bowling shoes, because let's face it: I look slow. The bartender will pour my shots of Jam-o to the rim; he knows I like spilling it all over myself and futilely trying to convince my girlfriend I'm not drunk when I get home later. They don't have food, because then I wouldn't be able to order my own pizza. This way, I can stick my hand inside balls (where many another strange hand has been) and then eat with my hands. Because that's sanitary. And they have great matchbooks, which is of the utmost importance. Somebody should tell Brooklyn Bowl to step it up. read more

I like this bowling alley better than Brooklyn Bowl. It is a bit more industrial, a bit more gritty and whole lot more hipster. That's right, I am out of the closet. I heart hipsters. They know how to party and put on a good show. So actually, I didn't get to bowl, but will come back for it. We came for a film screening of "Girl Walk All Day." The film is 90 minutes of pumped-up music and dancing all throughout NYC. It was being shown in the backroom. This is a great space for a dance party. You have to walk past the row of unisex bathrooms to get to this secluded room. The film gets started and 15 minutes in, the music becomes so infectious that everyone just starts dancing. It was trance-like and everyone was getting down and sweaty. I love when people just loose and dance like maniacs. We also couldn't help it and danced with the crowd. The three main dancers featured in the film were also present and shaking their stuff like no tomorrow. Wow, my brush with fame! Needless to say, the room got quite steamy and hot. We tried to cool off with some beers. They have a good selection of tap beers ($6), your usual Brooklyn favorites (Smuttynose, BluePoint, etc). They also sell beef jerky at the bar. The guy standing next to me informed me it was really good. Oh well, another lifetime. I really liked the feel of this place. It reminded me of a Midwest saloon filled with hipsters. Damn, I really like this place. It's a dive bar meets bowling alley AND you can bring in your own food. I basically need to have every birthday from here on out at this place, minus the fact it's in Brooklyn and for me, that's so 2005 (when I did indeed live in that neighborhood). I came here with coworkers for a super fun event that involved delivery from Williamsburg pizza, potentially cheap drinks and bowling!!! The bowling is first come first serve and the place is on the smaller side so... get here before the crowd...is there a crowd? I don't know since I've been here once, but I'd imagine there'd be a crowd since I mean, it's bowling and booze. Also, just a quick heads up: I hate to hate, but I'm gonna. The trivia here on a Monday night sucked. My party ended up staying here for it and half the party left since the trivia was so bad. Short tempered, inflexible staff and constantly malfunctioning equipment ruined what would have been an otherwise great night out. Getting shoes was the first problem, with the staff member constantly forgetting which lane we were in and asking for members of our party to pay for a new lane just to receive shoes. Once inside, our lane stopped working several times, which required us to walk out and ask staff to fix the lane. After several of these interruptions, an employee walked out to say that it was fixed for good, and that they added some time to our lane to compensate. We completed the test of the game down to the 9th frame, when the lane stopped working again. An employee came out and told us that we were out of time, and that they wouldn't let us finish the last of the game. I have very mixed feelings about The Gutter - I love the vibe of the bar itself - the 70s bowling alley/basement bar hangout vibe is perfectly attained with the mood lighting and vintage decor. The preponderance of solid, mostly craft beer options available on tap or by pitcher is great. Also, they make a fine dark and stormy. In fact, if judging just by bar, or a place to hang out, this might rate a bit higher with me. We came for a birthday event on a Saturday evening (yeah, I know...). Its not so much the wait, which was planned for, but the poor math (or pure disingenuousness) of their wait estimate. We arrived at 6:30pm and got numbers 32 and 33, where they were now serving 10 (if you've never been here, the lane wait is like ordering a Babka at the bakery - take a number and wait until its called. But don't necessarily expect the Chocolate.) We were told about 2 hours wait, which I thought at the time was unrealistic, and, well, it was. We didn't get out there until a bit after 11pm. Oddly for me, the wait didn't enrage me the way it typically does... I was kind of expecting it, and, again, it's a great place to hang with friends - with pool, pinball, tabletop games, good music, the ability to order in pizza, there's not much you're lacking for. Except the ability to bowl for a while, that is. But it was the quality of the bowling itself that really troubled me. Again, it was a Saturday night at 11, so there were lots of large groups, presumable of varying levels of intoxication, but the number of people crammed into a small-to-begin with 8 lane bowling alley area was not comfortable and a bit disconcerting. We were in lane 7, and I was about a minute or two away from asking the party in lane 8 why they felt the need to continually cut in front of our lane when we were bowling when I realized that they really had no other way out of said corner but across our lane. The bowling ball assortment was haphazard, with not enough lighter ones for those in our group who prefer to work with lighter balls [INSERT JOKE HERE]. Our friends in lane 6 and the party next to them in lane 5 had to keep score manually due to technical glitches, which didn't seem exactly fair after 4 hours of waiting/drinking time. So overall, for me, a nice spot for a drink or to hang, but less desirable for actual bowling. read more

This bowling alley is on point. The bar area is very divey (which means automatic props from yours truly), featuring a couple pool tables and plenty of small booths to sit your party at while waiting for your epic opportunity on the lanes. Very cool decor... You'll definitely be in awe for a few minutes just getting your bearings when you first enter. I know I was! The way that the bowling works is that it's first come, first serve. When I went here on a Friday night around 6:30pm, it looked like a couple lanes were unusable lanes, but still did not have to wait longer than 30 minutes for our turn on the lanes despite there being a few parties there already. I imagine this place gets VERY packed on the weekends. Anyway, I purchased an hour of bowling and had tons of fun. There was a good selection of house balls with varying weights and sizes. They let you rent shoes ($3) also. The lane I was given (I think it was 7) was kinda buggy--over the course of an hour, I had to reset the lanes multiple times to make sure that it counted the scores properly. Not a big deal, but it was a minor inconvenience. BYOF--good deal. If you don't bring any food though, they do have plenty of snacks at the bar. But if you're planning on bowling a while, I would volunteer that you bring in a pizza or two... Good cheap drinks at the bar. We enjoyed a total of three ciders before going up to the lanes and the total damage was around $18 or so. The owner refuse to give our friends a lane even though there were 3 empty lanes. The owner said she can't have two groups of six who "know each other." When my friends and I were looking for this place, I was kind of skeptical that anything was on this street until I got about 20 feet away from the entrance and heard the music/laughter...it is in an area where there aren't many ppl/cars This place has all sorts of local beers, which were very cold and refreshing... I like the free events here, especially Animation Nights New York (ANNY). The gutter is a large space with at least two rooms with lots to drink that doesn't cost a lot. It was crowded and lively, but not loud -- it was very easy to have a conversation with others or eavesdrop on your neighbors. Bathrooms are co-ed with mirrors in a public hallway, so be sure to handle hair and make up in advance of your arrival. During the Animation Nights New York (ANNY) event, I arrived early and got a good seat in a room of many seats. The view of the screen was good. Since I only paid $6 for a cocktail and got to see highly talented animated movies for free, I was DELIGHTED to enjoy such stellar, professional entertainment and night life without maxing out my credit card. This is NOT Brooyklyn Bowl and that's a damn good thing. there's not bouncer at the door, you won't encounter "no" 6 times before you even have a chance to sit down, and more than likely you will definitely get to bowl. All of which cannot be said about the aforementioned establishment. Now for the "other" side. the lanes are rutted, the balls are pocked, the seats have tape holding them together and booze isn't top shelf. But that is precicely what makes this place fantasitc. a round of drinks for about 7 people was $34. we were left to enjoy ourselves with rules, hassles and attitude. I think I was enjoying myself so much that I forgot to observe whether hipsters were in fact lurking about. Oh well! Even though I don't bowl (a long silly story) and I don't put beer on a pedestal, I liked The Gutter! It's way the heck out there and easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but hey -- I had a good crew with me and beers ran a painless $4-7 on a Saturday night! My posse appreciated the old-school tone of the place too, from the dial-tuner TV to the candy bar vending machine in the corner. (And, as beer lovers, they totally dug the drafts selection.) I'm more of an activities-person than a drink for the sake of drinking person, so I totally appreciated that The Gutter facilitates mingling, even with new friends (this was a beer Meetup.com group), as you're engaged in DOING something (as someone previously mentioned). At $7pp/game and $3/shoes, it's not a bad shot. The pool table also leaves an additional entertainment option while you're waiting for your lane, if you can snag the single table. what an awful experience. bouncer at the door was incredibly rude i've never experienced such awful treatment. my friends (who are from latin america) we're given an attitude when showing their ID's solely because they do not have US IDs. once we decided to leave a couple hours after, he mumbled something under his breath and my friend asked him if there was a problem and if he had an issue with Latin americans. he proceeded to respond very aggressively and say "YES! i have a HUGE problem with Latinos!!!" as we were arguing with him he kept calling my friends slurs and told them to go back to the "basura" (trash). if it weren't for the lovely bartenders i would never even consider coming back. read more

First things first: this place is located in Greenpoint and it has 10 lanes -- you're gonna see some hipsters and you're gonna have to wait to bowl. Came here for a friend's birthday party last Friday. Since she did a little research, she was smart and had the party start at 7 and came at 630 so we could reserve 2 lanes. The bar area was relatively empty -- we were able to gather our group of 10 in a section off to the side and enjoy a few pitchers of beer and order some pizza from the big book of menus. We were told an hour wait to bowl but our number was called within a half an hour and they were nice enough to shift a group so we could have two lanes together. I must say, I really liked the staff -- they were not at all pretentious, very accomodating, and laid-back -- I have only praise for them. As soon as we got to our lanes, the pizza arrived -- perfect timing! Beer was tasty and cheap (especially during Happy Hour) and bowling was fun. Definitely not your upscale bowling alley but functional and affordable ($7/pp/hr + $3/shoes). Our group was graciously given an extra half hour since we used much of our reserved time getting our shoes and setting up the scoreboard. My only gripe was the location -- as a girl traveling solo, I did not feel very secure walking a half mile through the deserted streets from the Bedford Ave subway stop. Next time I'd bring a buddy. Also, the sign was a bit hidden -- I saw "Bar" and immediately walked past it only to turn around and see "Bowl" on the other side of the sign. The unisex bathrooms were also unexpected -- as I started hunting for a stall I freaked out for a second because I only saw men washing their hands and must've looked like a deer in headlights. But I saw a woman walk in and felt a little better...just a little. Was a bit out of my comfort zone but hey, natured called and I had to answer. This is very cute and trendy place! I would definitely go back. My friend and I came here to go bowling and try the place out and at first I was unsure of the place. We went to the lady and to bowl is $10 it was $7 for the lane and it was $3 for the shoe rental and the game thereafter was only $7 which was a really great price especially in comparison to other bowling alleys We also had a few drinks I had an amaretto sour and he had southern comfort and the tab was only 28 for four drinks. I would have preferred to have gone to the Brooklyn Bowl, but here we were trekking to Brooklyn to do some bowling and yet, we basically came all the way here just to drink, since the wait for bowling was more than a few hours. Check it out...It was a lovely Sunday afternoon with my group of friends at The Gutter until we experienced some unfortunate discrimination from the staff here... Three of us (black male, white Jewish male, Asian female) were asked to show IDs, which was fine, considering we were the only ones drinking. Minutes later, one of the employees behind the bar demanded that one of two of our non-drinking friends (black female) at the table needed to show ID too. ***Keep in mind, the entire time, he did NOT once demand that our other non-drinking friend (white female) needed to show ID.*** We then knew what this was, and our black female friend cooperated, then happened to show a city ID that was apparently not accepted at the bar. The employee then walked over to our table and began to shoo us out to leave without actually telling us to leave. Passive aggression...alright, cute. We were more than happy to get out of a place that didn't accept our black female friend's ID and didn't even ask for our white female friend's ID at all. We had three drinks we had just ordered and wanted to finish before leaving, given they profited from our business as paying customers, but that didn't seem to be acceptable either. Really enjoyed my 2+ hours with friends at the Gutter. I never thought i could have fun at a dive bowling alley, which is exactly what this place is. Not much of what i'm about to say is going to be positive, but follow along if you have a minute... I'm not sold on the whole Williamsburg/Greenpoint scene where old and run-down is cool. While lower prices are always a nice change of pace, it's places like the Gutter that create the perfect excuse to be cheap and lazy with your business. Graffiti on the walls was cool for CBGB, but here it's just a poor excuse to not maintain. The whole retro bowling feel can be fun, but i prefer a ball that doesnt have craters so big it's not able to roll down the lane properly. You can feel the filth inside the holes of the balls, you may get that at any bowling alley but this was beyond insane. The "computer" used to keep score is probably just as old as me and might be running on MS DOS. Again it's the "retro feel" that makes this acceptable, so you get one letter for each person's name per line on this "computer." Dust bunnies are not cool no matter where you are, so when you have to step over them to bowl you can't have any excuse. The ceiling fans don't work, they are rusted up...cool! Basically the place is a dump located on cheap property and to top it off the beers are not cheap, but it only cost 21 bucks a person to bowl for two hours which is fantastic. Some people love everything i just described, maybe i'm just a little too old and grumpy to see the good in it all, but i had a great time with my friends and i guess that's all that matters in the end. Wow... talk about a post racial society...AS IF. My friends and I felt the brutal hand of oppression as we were the only folks to be IDed to bowl among a large group of mostly white friends. Their excuse to not let me borrow shoes was the fact that my id was expired. The white privileged exuded from their musky large beards. I know that Brooklyn has all but been invaded by these self absorbed douche bags but never in my life did I think I'd be denied service at a bowling alley jusy for my appearance. I'm really dissatisfied with their service and demeanor in which I was received with. It's ludicrous that I was allowed in the establishment without an I'd but not allowed to borrow shoes. These are the people in Brooklyn who voted for trump. I won't stand for this and I hope management addressed this promptly and with some transparency.
