Went back today and the man that works there is NOT POLITE and he makes my lunch hour stressful. I won't be going back to this location again as long as he's serving food. He's terrible. The servings he dispenses to customers is terrible. I don't know... perhaps he doesn't like Black people. Firstly let's start off with the manager Sayem, he was so accommodating, nice and warm and it made the experience here so much better. My platter was super delicious and the BBQ chicken was so flavorful as well as the beef gyro. The white sauce was super creamy and was the perfect accompaniment with the meal. They have refreshing iced teas and lemonades. I got the hibiscus lemonade and it was refreshing and not super sweet. I appreciate the fact that my drinks wasn't overly filled with ice to water my lemonade down. I also had the chocolate baklava cheesecake which was soo delicious and rich. It's been several years since going to a Halal Guys, so when on Duke Street recently and seeing this place, I stopped in for lunch. Service was friendly and "textbook" in nature! The place was clean and well-stocked. The food was just "ok." The lettuce wasn't as fresh as it should have been. The other items in my bowl were lacking a robust flavor, including the spicy BBQ chicken, which had a heavy BBQ taste (which was nice) and lots of heat (which was also nice), but that was it and the texture was questionable. The Baba ghanoush was pretty bland and had a nasty texture. The pita slices were wet/wimpy and bland too (they didn't need to be crispy, but they should have been a little stiffer and "dippable" in structure). Overall... With their basic menu and small amount of options as toppings, I doubt I'll be back anytime soon - Which is sad, because the concept is great and they could really do so much better. read more

What a great 1st time experience! Got the small chicken platter it was so good, especially with the white sauce. Downloaded the app and got a free side and drink for 1st time visit. That was all for my son. Even the small platter was big enough to split. So much food! Delicious chicken! He is gluten free so we got it without the pita but definitely didn't miss it. I got the mango iced tea-yummy! The employees working today were so friendly and helpful. They seem to really enjoy their job and working here together. The place was clean, the tables were wiped, the floor was clean, and there weren't fingerprints all over the front window, which to me is a big sign of cleanliness Lol. I agree with the other reviews saying the food tastes bland. I ended up covering it with the sauce to make up for it, but even then the taste comes through. The most flavorful part of a bowl is the meat, and that was the least tasty for me. The gyro meat was simply okay, but the chicken wasn't good, and the beef was outright bad. The other toppings tastes normal, but the main part of the meal brought everything else down. I've had many good gyros before and they're a step above this and packed with way more flavor. This location is convenient to me and I will go here if I am very hungry and there's too much traffic to get to a restaurant I like. While the meat is ok, the rice is quite oily and cheap quality - instead of just eating the rice, it makes me contemplate every grain and question if it's helping me or hurting me. Besides that, the toppings are fine. I prefer the chicken vs lamb - I generally love lamb but this is not the type of lamb I love. I have not tried their fountain drinks, sides, or desserts but they look decent if you are not on a budget. My youngest child loved coming here - it is fairly child friendly and they have ample indoor seating, so it works for an affordable fast casual dine-in option with slightly more soul than the Panera nextdoor. That said I prefer Falafel Inc and even Omar's for the better rice and sauces and I think both are a bit less expensive though they lack the dine-in space and full parking lot. So yea trade-offs and I might go here if it fits my priorities at that moment. read more

I can't even count how many times I've gotten halal guys. I'm obsessed with it. After moving to NOVA and finding out there are multiple locations here my stomach is happy even if my wallet isn't. It sounds so simple; protein, rice, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, green peppers, some white sauce and a red spicy sauce. Put it all together and with the spices they use it's one of my favorite places to grab food. So so delicious and I haven't found anything comparable. I usually get the chicken but now they released zesty lamb for a limited time. The chicken is always a hit for me, but the lamb is really just as addicting. Their white sauce is amazing, never had anything like it! Be wary with the red sauce, that stuff is seriously spicy. I usually get 2 lines and can definitely taste the spice. Overall I love halal guys and have visited several locations in Chicago, New York City (had to visit the OG), and now the DMV area. This Alexandria location has been my favorite within the DMV. We've ordered takeout from here a few times and its always really good! Every time i ordered the Chicken / Gyro Combo platter. This platter comes with beef gyro, chicken, rice, lettuce and tomato. Two times in my order, we received packets of white sauce but another time we didn't get any sauces. I'm not sure which is the norm but if you get a chance to get the white sauce, i would HIGHLY recommend. The sauce is creamy and seasoned and really ties the platter together. I found the hot sauce to be really hot so be careful when adding if you are more sensitive. When we ordered, i placed my order online and went in for pick up and it was super easy. Worth it in my opinion. The spicy sauce is SPICY. I enjoy it but be careful your first time in. About a 2-2.5: I have mixed feelings about Halal Guys - I've been to the original at 53rd and 6th, and, it's just weird that they're now a chain, popping up all over the place. I was curious if they were able to maintain the quality and the consistency of their original chicken and rice at each of their locations. Chicken over Rice was ordered, adding in the lettuce, the peppers, and even a scoop of their baba ghanouj. I thought the lettuce would make it strange, but it actually adds a bit of a freshness and crunch to it. The rice was a hit-or-miss, as some of cooked fine, and other parts were slightly undercooked. The chicken was seasoned well, but I just wish that they either keep it on the grill or have better warmers to actually keep the meat at a hot temperature. The hot sauce that comes in a packet was just a bit too spicy for my taste; the white sauce was a little watered down, but added some moisture to the plate. When you're hungry, having the initial bites are fine; but, after the first few, it just becomes a bit flavorless and mundane. I have to say, this location does give you generous portions, and no need to upgrade to a large size; even one will give you at least 2 servings of a meal. Their portions are huge! I got two meals out of this and it was $10. I got the chicken and falafel platter. The falafel was good for the first couple of bites, but then I got tired of the deep fried taste so I'd probably just stick to chicken next time because it combo's well throughout the platter. They give you an abundant amount of protein, rice, and veggies with pita. We also added green peppers and onions. Their white sauce is what adds all that yummy flavor to their platters. Beware, their hot sauce is actually really hot and this is coming from someone who eats really spicy foods. One of the staff recommended getting the hot sauce on the side since it was my first time and I really appreciated it otherwise my mouth probably would have been on fire. Stopped buy on a Saturday evening for dinner and I am extremely happy I did. The staff was fantastic, friendly and very efficient, ordering process was very quick. I had spicy lamb platter with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, pita white sauce and hot sauce. Pitted olives and hummus were added for an additional charge. The regular bowl was huge, definitely large enough for dinner all of the flavors melded together perfectly and the hot sauce actually had heat. I hadn't planned on eating here. I was in between errands, close to dinner time, and saw the signs. My family lived in the Middle East for two years, and we missed the days of cheap, nutritious falafel dinners. We also recently visited NYC (pre-pandemic), and loved the halal guy carts filled with delicious and filling shawarma and platters. So, I called the wife, asked if she wanted some falafel and that was it. The food: outstanding. Fresh lettuce, excellent tomatoes, and onions. All produce was ripe, nothing brown or sitting around. That is usually an indicator of attention to detail. They nailed it. The shawarma was hot, fresh, juicy and didn't feel like it had been sitting on the spit for weeks. My wife raved about the falafel, crispy, hot, and very flavorful. The rice: cooked beautifully: tender, flavorful, no additional salt or seasoning necessary. The sauces: white sauce and hot sauce, were also excellent. Put in packets on the side (read: no soggy messes), they were flavorful, packaged nicely, and perfectly complimented the meals. My only gripe was really with Grubhub somehow screwing up my digital takeout order. By the time I arrived, my food hadn't been prepared. The owner/operator worked fast to make my food (although he ended up giving me the wrong order: I ordered a shawarma sandwich and he gave me the more expensive platter). I didn't think I could eat an entire platter but it was so damn good, I guess the owner knew better what I should order! We definitely go back to this place to get more food. Wow. This place has a long way to go. My boyfriend and I stopped in to grab dinner the other night and what we experienced was not good. We will not be returning anytime soon unless the service is improved. We walked in to an empty restaurant with the exception of 1 customer placing her order at the counter. I was surprised there were so many employees working (I counted a total of 5 people). We waited in "line" for 10 minutes while there were 5 people behind the counter and not a single individual welcomed us or began to take our order. We had to speak up so someone would acknowledge us. My boyfriend was helped. He built a combo (chicken and beeef gyro) sandwich with fries. There were three employees behind the counter left and again not a single person lifted a finger to take my order or even acknowledge my presence. Eventually the employee helping my boyfriend encouraged one of the others to take my order and I was able to get my dinner. We were in the restaurant for 20 minutes getting two sandwiches to go. That was unacceptable when everything is already prepared and we were the only people in the place! I don't like writing one star reviews and I often try not to do it but what we experienced here deserves it.
