I really wanted to like The Halal Guys in Chicago, but this was one of the most disappointing meals I've had in a while. I ordered the chicken platter, which was already on the pricier side, and was surprised to find they charge extra for what most places include as standard toppings. Not a great start. Unfortunately, the food didn't redeem it. The chicken had almost no seasoning -- just bland and dry. The rice and toppings tasted like they had been sitting out for way too long. Nothing felt fresh. For the price, I was expecting way better quality and flavor. To top it off, the inside of the bathroom was genuinely disgusting. It was dirty, smelled awful, and clearly hadn't been cleaned in a while. That alone made me question the cleanliness of the kitchen. Between the overpriced, flavorless food and the lack of basic cleanliness, I won't be coming back. Not too long ago I put Just Salad through the wringer for serving rabbit food, with a small amount of chicken for exorbitant prices.* With Halal guys, now we're talking! I ordered a small platter with beef gyros, pepper, onions, jalapenos and all three sauces (white, a little red, a little BBQ). Despite being a small, the portion was more than enough to quell even my voracious appetite. The amount of beef was generous and it had that amazing roasted crispness/caramelization that would make out friend Louis Camille Maillard happy. The rice was also cooked perfectly, and veggies were fresh. The sauces tied everything together nicely! The white sauce gave some creaminess, with fat carrying the flavors, the BBQ awarded the meat some sweetness and extra savoryness, and the hot gave some fire (which I like with almost everything, even some desserts). All of this was a very reasonable price of right around $15 after taxes! I am not thrilled that extra sauces on the side come with an additional charge, but I do understand why this is. Sauces aren't free for the business, and this stops people form grabbing all they want with abandon. Finally, the service was polite and rocket fast. The whole process after my turn in line took less than a minute. Thus, we have a filling, tasty bowl with rice, meat, and veggies, that is handed to you before one would finish ordering at McDonald's, for a competitive price, too! I picked up my chicken over rice, the only thing I was disappointed with was the big chunk pieces of chicken in my dish. Strict No ...!! Pieces should be small and soft. never seen those big pieces in my chicken over rice or in Gyro. other than that - it was good. they have 2 options, small and regular. What's awesome about the Halal Guys is you can get a VERY filling meal that is not only fast, but also reasonably priced. Is it the absolute best gyro or chicken? No, but it's always very solid and consistent from location to location. It'll be 3 minutes or less from the time you order to the time you're sitting and chowing down. The only exception to this are the falafel, which they must fry to order, or at least in batches during the lunch rush. They are famous for their white sauce, which is so delicious on the platter.. and beware their hot sauce. They aren't messing around - this stuff is crazy spicy so try it first before you dump the whole container on your platter, rendering it inedible. read more

The mediocre - hummus was good but not particularly memorable and the falafel was missing the characteristic crunch perhaps due to the timing/size of our catering order. One of my favorite places to eat whenever I'm in the East coast. I was surprised to see a Halal Guys in Chi-town. We stopped by here to grab a quick bite. The line wasn't long and the service was fast. I ordered the combo chicken and beef plate. The chicken was a little runny. I'll just have to remember not to order any chicken in my plate next time. If I am ever in need of some hefty comfort food that will last lunch and dinner, I look to Halal Guys! Ordered via Yelp and it was a smooth ordering/delivery process. Based on what app you're ordering from, different options come up. For the Yelp ordering, the combo platter was an option which is my favorite! I also get the gyro/chicken combo with everything. If you want some extra veggies, add in the comments to add chopped onions and green peppers (for free). They also give a nice crunch to the whole palette. The order came quickly after and was still hot. The gyro/chicken was tender, not dry at all. The white sauce really glues the whole platter together. I force myself to only stick to one packet, but this location was nice enough to give us an extra without charge (or asking!). I will save it for some fries later. I picked the perfect dish. I picked my new favorite dish. I picked the dish I will order every time I return in the future. 100/10 would recommend. I felt like I was eating very healthy (although I'm not sure I was...), so there you go, they got me to eat my veggies and everything on the platter. Pita bread - soft. The platters are served with a few sliced of cold pita bread and NO HUMMUS. Hummus is $1.50 extra. Chicken and beef shawarmas are referred to here as gyros (seriously?!). A pocket pita is $1.00 extra. The don't give out small cups for water.
