Speaking for the N wells ST location I finally decided to get their $15 dinner box which i see a sign for almost everyday when i went it the menu is directly on your left before you reach the counter which can be confusing for a first timer, but the lady at the front was really helpful and explained everything to me and when i finally ordered i got the chicken and 2 sides, chicken was cooked perfectly (NOT DRY!) and the sides were filling and the sauce selection near the drink section was pretty good aswell so in laments terms * A+ service * Food was worth the money * Service was great! read more

2nd timer alert! First time via DoorDash and 2nd time dining in. Came across Brown Bag Seafood via DoorDash because I was craving a lobster roll and BBS was highly reviewed so gave it a try. The lobster roll was very simple...toasted buttered bread, poached lobster, and warm butter; exactly how I like it! It comes with a side so of course I chose crispy tater tots. The packaging was very secure for delivery and food arrived fairly warm (can't fight Chicago cold weather). For the price point I was expecting the roll to be overstuffed with lobster; however, it was pretty good! A week or so later I went to dine in and ordered the chili ginger salmon sandwich, fries, and gingerade vodka drink. The sandwich was just ok (didn't have the seasoning I was expecting) and the gingerade drink was very watered down (not worth the purchase). What I will say is the inside is decorated like you're at a beach themed restaurant (very nice) and the cashier/server was very friendly and helped by providing recommendations. I've walked past Brown Bag Seafood countless times and finally decided to grab dinner from there the other night. My order was ready in about 15 minutes, and the pickup process was super easy. The space inside is surprisingly large, with plenty of seating and a nice, welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the large Power Box with salmon and a side of buffalo bleu tots. The salmon was really good--flavorful, well-cooked, and paired with a citrusy aioli-style sauce. The quinoa base added a nice, hearty touch, which I assume is what makes it a "Power Box" compared to other options. The buffalo bleu tots were also great--crispy, flavorful, and a solid side choice. No complaints about the food itself; it was fresh, healthy, and tasted fantastic. My only gripe is the portion sizes for the price. The "large" salmon plate was over $20 but wasn't particularly big, and the tots, while reasonably priced at $4, came in a tiny coffee cup. I visited tje location in River North on North Wells for the first time and was greeted by a pleasant gentleman named Ralph who rendered me Excellent Customer Service. I really wanted this place to be good, but alas it is not. Let's start with the good, the service was friendly and efficient. But then everything else was subpar. I got the salmon and fresh catch bowls with quinoa and veggies. While the fish portion was adequate, the whole thing was quite small. The quinoa was a ball of overcooked mush and the veggies were cooked to the point of sogginess. We had a great family dinner here. Crispy shrimp were the favorite, fish and chips was good. My son and husband don't love seafood, so they got the grilled chicken which was also very good. Clam chowder was a bit thicker than I'm used to, but flavor was good and it was full of clams and potatoes. Service was excellent, staff were super helpful and so kind. We went in at 4 PM on a Sunday, when it was really quiet. I ordered salmon with vegetables (grilled salmon veggie box) and my spouse ordered the chowdah. The salmon was done perfectly, seared crisp on the outside and tender (not dry) on the inside. The green veggies were also cooked tender (not mushy), and seasoned nicely. I didn't need the sriracha sesame sauce, but that was good too. I liked my food better than the chowder, but the chowder was nice and hearty. We also got Swedish fish! The service was prompt, friendly, and professional. The bathrooms needed a bit of TLC in terms of maintenance, but the overall space was inviting with mellow R&B music in the background. Once I walked in to pick up an order the lady at the register kept repeating "hi welcome in" but with an attitude and I specifically said to her "Hello I have a pick up" and she was giving me a dirty look because apparently I didn't greet her even though I did. Then once I got to the pick up counter she kept yelling "HI HELLO HOLA?!?" And even her coworker making the food asked "what are you doing?" And she told him that i apparently didn't have manners. Pleasantly surprised and impressed with the ambiance, service, and food at this location. They were all equally excellent. I entered the location and it was clean, warm and welcoming. The gentleman at the register helped me select my meal as it was my first time at the restaurant. He was very patient. Brandon prepared my food which turned out so GOOD. I felt like I got all the value for my money as far as the atmosphere and the food being nourishing To my temple. You won't have judge this review by the stars! I've waited to post this one, I'm trying a new policy - if you aren't good enough to visit twice, you may not be worth writing about! I've visited Brown Bag Seafood three times, and the third time was a charm. On this occasion it was for lunch, on a beautiful sunshiny day in Chicago (the temperature dropped 20 degrees that evening). Inside there were only a few patrons, as I approached the counter to order, I was kindly greeted by a young Sister at the register. After the warm greeting, at my request she thoroughly explained the available menu items. The pleasantry made me focus on the high level of communication between the workers (all young, all Black), and how they extended this to all the customers that followed me. I chose to sit outside under the cloudless sky. The waiter informed me to take a table number and that my meal would be out soon. Seated on a bench, under an umbrella sufficiently blocking the bright Sun, I watched a few pigeons searching for food, and experienced the irritating sounds of the city (yeah, I intelligently set under an above ground subway path - duh!) - within five minutes my food arrived. It didn't just arrive, the customer service exhibited indoors was extended to the outdoor seating too. The young man (waiter, Black, appeared to be under 25) gave me my order and said "enjoy your meal and let me know if you need anything." I immediately told him I left my drink inside, he swiftly retrieve it and gave it to me. Upon finishing my meal, I returned inside and asked a third server if I could get another tea. She walked me over to the cups, and gave me a top and straw. After this experience, I asked if the manager was available? A Sister maybe in her late 30's (you know it's hard to tell our age) came out and introduced herself; I went on to complement her staff's customer service and personalism. In return, she asked me to say a good word about them on social media. I must add, she didn't in anyway seem surprised by her staffs acumen (little word, big meaning). Most impressively, this experience has been consistent each time I've visited. I almost forgot this is a restaurant review and I have to say something about the food - scrumptious - I'll say less and allow the photos to speak for me. I got crispy cod veggie box and the truffle tots and they were so good! I was a little worried if the veggie box was not going to be filling but I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be more than enough food and I really enjoyed it. The cod was crispy on the outside but soft in the inside, the veggies were perfectly cooked, and the tots really tasted like Parmesan and truffle. I personally think it's a really nice fast casual type of place! It is on a pricier side but seafood in general tends to be more expensive than meat. Looking for a healthy lunch? Lookin for a not so healthy lunch? This spot. Pick your poison as long as seafood is involved (although they do have a few non seafood items). You pick your vessel - salad, bowl, tacos, plate, etc.. and pick your fish, dressings etc. and enjoy. I went with the greens/grain medley topped with seared ahi and it was delicious and healthy. I was for sure hungry a few hours later, as the portion wasn't the biggest. In all actuality it was a quite a bit of fish, but I think more greens/grain or vegetables would have filled me up a bit more. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. There is plenty of seating both indoors and out. The iced tea was fine. Overall, if you like seafood, you won't be disappointed with this fast casual concept. read more

We went during "golden hour" (happy hour) and we definitely received a delicious meal for a pretty cheap price, especially for seafood. The portions listed as large, definitely weren't a very large portion as we were still hungry when leaving. The Dinner plate comes with a large protein, 2 sides, and garlic bread. The large protein made me wonder what the regular size would be because it was quite small, and the garlic bread was about an inch long and an inch wide, which certainly isn't what is expected when you see that bread comes with your meal. Stopped in 1/7 around 7 pm to grab dinner. This was my 1st time ordering but it certainly won't be the last. I'm not sure of the young man that was behind the counter and at grill but I tried calling back just to tell you how EXCELLENT everything was. When I said the flavors, the aroma and even the presentation of the order was great. I was doing a little dance. I had the salmon with greens mixture. I ate every vegetable. Y'all I don't even like kale but I ate their kale. We also had tots and chowder. My son and I were very happy. We got this carry out. Our food was ready when we got there and it was packed very nicely. After eating about half of the roll, I decided to throw it in the microwave, and to my delight, it was much better. If getting this carry out, I highly recommend popping it in the microwave so that it's sufficiently warm. I love lobster rolls. This probably isn't the best lobster roll in the world, but we're in illinois, so expectations shouldn't be set too high. This was a great meal and I'll probably get it again sometime. I've had this woman owned restaurant on my radar for a while. This review is about quality of food for delivery via Uber Eats. I ordered the curry fish cakes with a salad base. Ubereats doesn't do a good job explaining the bases for the meal so I had to do some googling on the website. The curry Fish Cakes are made with salmon and cod, the restaurant gives two and they come with a garlic aioli that is a bit too tangy for my liking. The salad base has onions, cabbage, carrots, and shaved parmesan cheese and comes with a lemon vinaigrette. Combined the aioli and the vinaigrette work however the 4 stars are because was still a bit tangy. I would definitely order this again, the food came quickly and the fish cakes were way better than I thought they would be. The curry in them were super flavorful and makes me want to visit the restaurant in person and try other dishes. Would definitely recommend for a light lunch, the packaging is super cute and I saw they have a keto food option on the menu as well! read more

Fantastic customer service!! I accidentally went to the wrong location to pick up my to go order, it was FREEZING cold outside and would have been a real pain to walk to the other location. This is certainly a interesting concept for a fast food or quick serve restaurant. Rather than selling burgers, BBQ or Chinese they are selling fish and trying to do it fast. It's not that the food was bad or service awful, but that everything was a bit uninspired. The food was ok. I ordered tuna. The taste was just ok. I could taste that was tuna, but it must wasn't that flavorful. Moreover, it was cooked a bit too much. My expectation was a nice pink raw center, but instead it cooked a bit too much. I also ordered the buffalo-bleu tots. They were good tater tots, but again, nothing to get too excited about. The staff was nice, and service was ok. It was a bit slow, but that it might be expected as this fish and not some other type of quick serve food. As I stated before, everything was just ok, but not great. If you want a break from a more traditional quick serve lunch or something a little different this might be a good option. However, given the price, the meal was over $20.00 for lunch, this might not be an everyday lunch. If want fish, you are better off just going to a more traditional restaurant. read more

There's not much more that excites me than a tasty healthy new lunch spot near my office so I"ve been eagerly awaiting Brown Bag Seafood to open their doors. I got there at 11:30 hoping to beat the lunch rush and was lucky enough to be one of the few people in there. When I first walked in I was struck by a very strong smell of fish, but guess that's to be expected since they serve fish...and lots of it. The lovely Donna, the brains behind the 4 Brown Bag Seafood locations, greeted me and walked me thru the process of filling out the menu. So much to choose from, but when I told her I wanted to be super healthy with protein and veggies we decided on a grilled shrimp veggie box. The staff that prepared my box could not even be nicer and are clearly having fun in their home since at once point they all chanted at the same time "Brown Bag Seafood!" I was a little surprised when my food came in a box vs a bag, but it looked quite good so no complaints. I took it back to my office and enjoyed a healthy, tasty meal that was also filling. The toasted buttery, garlic bread, the crispy tots and most importantly the juicy, delicious lobster...this hit the spot for me! The reason I'm giving 4 stars is the Chowdah...I was so excited for this but it didn't hit the spot for me. The flavor was tasty, but I was hoping for big clam chunks and less potato. Hit or miss. I have been here three times, as it is right across the street from my job. The first time was tasty, but I left not feeling all that great. The second time was DELICIOUS, and I'd even let my food sit for the better part of an hour because I was working. I got the fried cod bowl with greens and grains. Great to have a quick food option for seafood and definitely appreciate the choice of clean cooked vegetables. The vegetables are un-seasoned so the variety of free sauces help there. One caveat would be to know that with the Daily Catch, the staff may not know how to properly cook it. My St Peter's fish was a bit broken up. I wouldn't try it again but since I have only been once, I don't have the heart to give them the 2-stars they probably deserve based on my meal. That and my wife liked hers for the most part. I noticed that the "catch of the day" was St Peter's fish. This is actually code for Tilapia which no one should eat. It's all farm raised from Asia for the most part or it's a non-sustainable fish otherwise. It's a junk fish at this point. I ordered the "crispy" cod with the veggie base. The cod was super thin and overcooked under a really overwhelming heavy breading. Terrible. Tiny pieces with more breading than fish. Just skip this one. You need to salt fried food out of the frier by the way. I ate half and then gave up. The vegetables were ok but lacked any seasoning at all and they included lots of undercooked broccoli stalks that probably should just have been composted. I ordered a side of tater tots that lacked salt as well. I like the concept and the menu but the portions and execution were a total failure. read more
