While in Chicago, I like to find the best places to eat. Believe it or not this place wasn't even originally where we intended to eat, but on a whim walking by we popped in. It's a tiny, but busy little joint. We tried a chicken and steak wrap and oh my god, it was heaven! We loved this place, sent photos to envious friends, and raved about it the rest of our day trip. There's no pizazz to the decor, but nonetheless it was a great dining experience. Its not really a detraction to the restaurant itself, but we did have a very uncomfortable interaction with a homeless gentleman who proceeded to grab at and make salacious comments towards my spouse once he found out we weren't carrying any cash. Since I lived in NY years before, this Mediterranean fast food was so familiar to me, actually I missed it after got back to Tokyo. So I was so excited when I found this shop in Chicago! I ordered combo meat small plate without pita and olive. I remember well that red sauce was way too spicy so asked the staff to give me as a side pouch. Also white sauce was too creamy and thick for me I also asked the staff to give me it as side pouch. The plate was as good as I've eaten last time in NYC. The shop was clean and the staff was kind. I love their fantastic beef gyro sandwich which is equally delicious as those that I ate in NYC. Their spicy sauce has a great spicy kick so I recommend a single line of it paired with their white sauce. Service was good. One of these days, I will get around to trying their chicken gyro. read more

I recently pulled into The Halal Guys on Wabash between Lake and Randolph. Apparently this place is relatively new (heck I've never noticed it before). There is some outdoor seating when it's nice outside, and some seating indoors. The Halal Guys seems intermingled with a coffee counter, which may explain some of the seating that belongs in a coffee house. The counter seating by the south window will have you facing off against Subway diners across the alley, and you may see a surprising stream of locals walking their dogs outside. I was here on a mid-Saturday afternoon, and it was not that crowded. I ordered a chicken and gyro combo sandwich. For only a buck or two more you can order a full platter of food, but I was not that hungry during my visit. The server asks what you want in the pita sandwich. The flat pita is sort of bundled in foil to keep all the ingredients together, but once the pita regains its natural flat shape it is a bit unwieldy to eat the sandwich with your hands. Part of that comes from an abundance of toppings, so one cannot complain that you have too much food on your plate. The chicken and the gyro meat tasted good enough, and the other toppings (tomato, green pepper, lettuce) were finely chopped. I've been staying away though because it does tend to be super oily but I was super craving it one day so decided to go. I got the combo platter like I usually do. I'm a big fan of the original New York location. If you ask me this vastly improves on the idea - indoors, with seating, and there hasn't ever been as long of a line. Staff moves the line through quickly, and pricing is reasonable. You get a lot more food with a bowl than the wrap. The Halal Guys here basically tastes exactly the same, with the exception that the rice and meat has been a little stale a couple of times. They are constantly cooking new meat on the grill behind the counter, so if you come on a slow day the food does tend to get a little old and grody. The food area as well has always been super messy - when they are scooping up, it is just rice and meat flying everywhere. Tables don't really seem to be wiped down often, and especially in the late hours of the night the place gets really hectic. At the end of the day, the taste is the same and you can ask for as many of the little white and red sauce packets as you want. read more

My favorite place to eat in the Chicago Loop just made it unaffordable to eat there. The food is literally THE BEST, but at $15.00 for a regular chicken/beef combo this puts it out of range for many people. The price was $11.99 in Nov. of 2022, and 6 months later it's increased by $2. $15 for a fast food lunch is too much. Inflation has gone DOWN since last year, so that can't be the reason. Not sure if they read my review and changed their ways, but boy was I glad to see large chunks instead of shredded chicken! Reminded me of the Halal Guys I frequented back in NYC. I also learned that their hot sauce is a lot less spicy compared to that of NYC locations, and asking for "Two lines" of hot sauce seems nearly perfect. They have run out of fountain drinks, so be prepared to pay $2.50 for a medium size bottle of soda. I really enjoyed their french fries. They make it very hot and fresh. I've been wanting to try out the Chicago Halal Guys ever since I tried the original in New York a few months ago, so I decided i'd pick some up for dinner after work. I walked over to their Wabash location and expected the line to be out the door like it was in New York (the line was basically wrapped around their cart), but there was no line at all and service was pretty quick. I was picking up dinner for my boyfriend and I, so we decided to try a plate and a sandwich so we can see what the better choice is. I had the chicken sandwich and my boyfriend had the regular gyro plate. The regular plate is huge, it could easily feed two people. If you're trying to watch what you eat, I'd suggest you go for the small plate. They fill it all the way to the top so it's plenty of food for one person. The meats are both delicious. I personally liked the gyro more. It was tender, delicious and got better after every bite. The chicken was okay, not as flavorful as the gyro, but still tasted okay. The rice was also really good, but my goodness that white sauce is to die for. I asked for extras because I knew we'd be wanting more. Service was quick and friendly. Knowing my boyfriend, I asked for more rice and the employee behind the counter was happy to add more, and I didn't even get charged for it. I'm happy there's a Halal Guys in Chicago. It's tasted very similar to the one in New York (not exactly the same, I'd definitely say the one in New York tasted better), but I mean nothing beats the original. I didn't know about this establishment until I went to a movie in March, 2017 at the Gene Siskel Film Center and they had "Neighborhood Night" where there were some vendor food samples afterwards in which Halal Guys was one of the vendors. I liked the small sample that I had so I decided to visit their storefront on March 23, 2017. I waited in line to place my order. I ordered the Beef Gyro platter and tried 2 of the falafel pieces. It was a good amount of food for the platter and the presentation looked good. I was ready to dig in! Unfortunately, I didn't like the falafel but that was my personal taste I feel. However, I was disappointed in the gyro platter due to it being full of grease because it was taken from a container where the grease from the gyro meat isn't disposed of. It would be great to use some type of slotted spoon so as to eliminate much of the grease. Even though that was back in March, I still have that visual that I can't get out of my mind of that grease. Being a new yorker, its always good to see Halal guys in any other city, I was so excited to see my favorite thing in Chicago. At very reasonable price, you get a lot of food with your meal, not sure if people can even finish their meal. Visited this location at the recommendation of my brother and the food is delicious. Tried their chicken platter and loved the simple and delicious balance of rice, veggies and chicken. Their white sauce and hot sauce mixed together is delicious. While we were picking up our orders the restaurant had to close down due to a gas leak. The crew were very friendly and polite in communicating the issue and serves us quickly before guiding us out of the restaurant. Oh man. This is the perfect drunk food. I totally get this place. I've heard A LOT about The Halal Guys. This is one of those places where it's truly special to those who had it in NY and so naturally, they were ecstatic when they saw one open up in Chicago and talked it up to everyone around them. And who could blame them? Hell, if there were Texas-base chains all of a sudden popping up in Chicago (Come on Whataburger and Rosa's--I'm looking at you!) I would be telling everyone to try it. Because the food is the best in the world, second to none? Nah, but because it's really good food and nostalgic for ME and I want those around me to experience the same. The Halal Guys I can tell is like that for many. And it will now be for me too. One thing I loved about this place is that the options are incredibly simple. There aren't a hundred condiments or add-ons to confuse you. You are instead presented with pretty much with lettuce, meat, rice and pita bread. Get the combo with gyro and chicken and prepare for some yumminess ahead. Both meats were so flavorful and tender and went well with the rice and I absolutely loved the soft, pillowy pita bread! Yes, the white sauce is really awesome and it is a no brainer to get as the meal would have definitely been incomplete without it, but the hot sauce... Now that's where the party was at for me. Being a huge fan of spicy stuff, I would have loved to have had my entire bowl covered in it. Definitely try it guys. FINALLY got to try this place ! I've heard so much about this place and for as many times as I go to Chicago I have yet to go! As I was leaving I had to make a quick stop to Zara and this was around the corner. I love how simple the menu is, either a sandwich or a bowl. I chose a bowl, the larger one. You might as well get the bigger bowl it's only a dollar more! For a large bowl you get chicken, gyro , salad, rice, and pay for only 9.99. Since I'm off and on this keto /carnivore diet I opted out of the rice salad and pita, which to my delight, they filled the bowl with meat for the same price! I added their white and hot sauce as well which are so good. Might want to ask for less white sauce cause they pile it on. Inside you see them cooking the chicken and where they shave off the gyro which is great. I don't want to see places pulled random pieces of chicken from a boat like subway. COVID-19 Review: Came here this past weekend with 3 others (bf, roommate, and a friend). We all wore masks as that is required upon entry and it was no fuss at all to get order our food in store and do takeout. We all got individual combo rice platters with both chicken and gyro (beef) which comes with a couple little triangles of naan. I actually thought that the chicken at this place was SUPER juicy compared to some of the NYC locations / food trucks of the Halal Guys I've had. Very solid well priced meal and they're generous with the white sauce too! My friend almost got 3 lines of red sauce because she didn't know it was super spicy so if this is your first time at Halal Guys.... just get one line.. or get a tiny red sauce packet on the side because their hot sauce is probably the spiciest hot sauce from any fast casual place I've ever been. TL;DR: Come here for a solid meal. Go easy on the red sauce unless your want your mouth to be completely on fire! read more

I frequent this place because it's so close. My go to is always the combo platter. The small is $8.99 and the regular is $9.99, so I go for the regular size every time. Food never fails to disappoint. The "red sauce" is very spicy and kicks up the heat of all of their dishes. I'm accustomed to the spices of Mexican dishes and the red sauce is a bit more heat that the rojo or verde hot sauces. Halal guy's hot sauce is so hot that they only give you a little bit to start but will definitely give you more if you ask. I highly recommend getting the "white sauce" if you chose to get the red, or even chose not to. It pairs well with the lettuce and tomatoes that come in the platter. It's a creamy and somewhat savory flavor that counter acts the spice of the red sauce. Employees are quite nice and thier menu is pretty simple. They offer chicken, gyro, falafel, baklava, and fries(but I focus on everything else). They don't accept cash greater than a 20, and pretty much prefer payment with card. They also have a rewards program that hopped on due to my occasional cravings. Some rewards include a free drink or platter. In the suburbs by my parent's place I sometimes go to Pita Inn, but if I'm craving some halal by my house. I'm always willing to hit up halal guys. read more

I was pretty disappointed. I love halal guys, but my experience today was not worth the visit. I got the chicken platter with veggies and my fiancée got the falafel platter. There was a good amount of food and it's way worth the price, but the platter was just dry. In NYC the platter is not that dry. In fact, even the imitation halal guy food cart places in NYC somewhat drench the platters with sauce. Both of our platters today did not have enough sauce and it just was not enjoyable. read more
