The "white sauce is caesar dressing... the hot sauce has no flavor. The chicken has very little flavor the rice is Spanish rice. I'm not one to complain about the service and I understand people having bad days but I think management needs to train employees on how to be nice to customers. The one employee that served my sister and I had a straight face and looked annoyed we were looking at menu. I asked for a regular platter and he was speaking so low I couldn't hear what he was asking for. Then he proceeds to ask me rudely , "tomato and lettuce"?! So I felt pressured just to order quickly because it felt like the employee did not want to be there at work. *manager emerges from back "Did anyone notice water? There's a damn leak in here!!" This will always stick in my brain as my introduction to Halal Guys. After my initial shock, I proceed to get ignored for 2-3 minutes. After a few minutes, an employee begins to take an order of a group who came in AFTER me. I had to step back and let her know to take my order. (I can't make any of this up lol) You know that feeling you get when it seems like you're inconveniencing someone and they give you that stank look? That sums up my whole experience with the employees that prepared my food. Every question I had was met with that, "C'mon bro hurry up and order," look. It made a great experience visiting this establishment (hopefully my sarcasm does not fall on deaf ears). The cashier was helpful and nice (no sarcasm, she really was helpful) The overall establishment seemed clean. I'm worried about their leak, hopefully they get it fixed. Now to the food. And I'm trying my best to separate the customer service from quality of food. I even told my wife a small piece of me hoped the food quality matched the customer service so I could write a scathing review (petty, I know, I'm getting counseling for my anger). In all honesty the food is pretty good. It absolutely needs the sauces because without it the meats are very dry. Those sauces really are different and make the meal. I can appreciate that the red sauce is actually hot. I think the business will do well because college students will love getting so much food at a reasonable price. First time here and I was not disappointed. The restaurant was clean and nice. The staff was polite and helpful, especially the employee at the register. They even gave us a free cookie! Currently, it's their soft opening so I am assuming that any of the kinks from my visit today is going to be worked out by the grand opening. Still rating the experience transparently though. -Food: 4/5- Food is as expected of halal guys. Good flavors, and that familiar white and red sauce over the rice/ veg/ protein combo. Some of the beef or chicken was just a bit charred/overdone (wasn't expecting that crunch when I bit into it). -Value: 3/5- This is comparing the quantity/ quality to other Halal Guys locations. This location's portions feels a LOT smaller in comparison to other locations I've been to. The Rowland Hts location gives quite a bit more rice/ protein in their bowls. -Ambience: 4/5- Usual interior just like any other location. Seating is enough for quite a good amount of people. Clean at ordering counter and the tables. Menu could be located in a place that's easier for those getting in line to order - didn't see where the menu was until after paying and walking away from the counter. -Service: 3/5- The students/ employees working there are very nice. Understandably, they are still learning the POS system and running through the paces for their grand opening. Unsure if that is why portions seem less compared to other locations. Was also rung up on a beverage even after their main manager (owner?) said to make sure the beverage is NOT added to the bill (per their promotion). Another younger manager stated the refund process is hard, and there was some back and forth about taking a dessert instead of a refund. Not a sweets person, so opted for the refund (but interestingly the refund amount was less than what was charged to my card??). Going to assume that difference in refund vs charged was a mistake, and hoping that it won't be happening in the future. *The main manager/ owner came by and offered a cookie as well. He definitely understands customer service (when it's a business end mistake). I've been fortunate enough to eat at the original Halal Guys street food vendors in New York City, and unfortunately, this location's gyro meat was dry and not as tasty as those street vendors or their Rowland Heights location about 45 minutes west of Riverside. The location was clean and has plenty of seating. I went when there was no one in line. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The is the worst Halal Guys that I have been to. I gave it three tries on different occasions to get a fair evaluation. I would not suggest going here. Food quality: on all three occasions the rices were somewhat undercooked. Once and a while I'll just chew on crunchy rice. It could be the rice or the the crunchy gyro. The gyro, on the other hand, are dry and also have a lot of crunchy bits. It makes me wonder if they just reuse the same pre-cut meat from previous days. Some of the meat were hard like overcooked bacon. That's not what gyro meat should taste like. The only good thing is the white sauce, but that's prepared and packaged from another location. Food quality is overall bad. Food safety: I'm a little concerned about food safety as well. When I told the women that I didn't want that much lettuce, she took the lettuce out and returned it to its own container. Shouldn't that have been tossed in the trash. Customer service: We have a variety of bad. We have encountered aloof servicer and bored and slow servers. I shouldn't feel like I'm bothering someone when I'm ordering food. Additionally, the music is so loud that I can hardly hear the people. That's somewhat fine, except for when it costed us more money the last time. When I thought she said, "do you want jalapeños", I simply said yes like normal. Unfortunately, I misheard her and she added hummus and eggplant dip to my bowl. This was a 6 dollar upcharge that I didn't want. It was not an "oh well" mistake where I enjoy the consequence of it. I don't like hummus or the eggplant sauce, so I paid 6 dollars for nothing because I couldn't eat it. Overall, the third time is the last time that we will visit this Halal Guys. After experiencing the original NY street vendors, I could never give any CA establishment a perfect score. It just doesn't compare. There's just something more special and tasty with NY. That's not to say that this place is bad. Nor is the Glendale spot. It's still Halal, so the quality is good. For something so close to home, it's my halal go-to. The only thing I would say needs work is the baba ganoush. It just needs more of that roasted/smokey taste. I've had better pre-packed BG from Ralphs and Vons...just sayin. 3 stars is not bad. As a big fan of gyros this is not the go-to place for gyro cravings. The bread is served out of the bag and is crumbly setved that way as it is not warmed up at all, and ot unfortunately doesn't hold the fillings. I ordered a combo protein sandwich with gyro beef and falafel. The two small falafel pieces were added at one end of the bread (which were crumbled by smash of the spatula), the meat was also small chopped up beef pieces. While the flavor was okay, it was not satisfying and it was an absolute mess to eat as the flatbreaf broke everywhere, so I had to use a fork to eat it from the plate. Their drinks are expensive too, unless you order a fountain drink. We were the only customers there at the time and our orders were all jumbled up. I tried this place once and I know I would not return. It was a big disappointment. There are other local pita spots that are authentic and enjoyable.
