Wow!!! What a great choice to eat amazing food and impeccable service by Rye!!! It was difficult to decide which appetizers to get. The fried gnocchi were light, airy and very tasty with the wasabi. We also ordered the crab beignets with the very complementary remoulade. They were full of crab just like a crab cake and very surprisingly a healthy portion which was great! Hats off to the Chef not only for the menu planning but for having a great staff that can execute a fabulous menu. Lobster Risotto was phenomenal! Scallops perfectly cooked and the pasta had amazing flavor. Salmon beautiful presentation!! Wife and I were in town on a whim. We stumbled on this place and had a fantastic dinner. We sat outside on the patio and had very attentive staff who gave us perfect recommendations. YES DAVENPORT! This place is classy, chill, and tasty. The BLT appetizer is INSANE. One time got it as our appetizer, had our filet, THEN ORDERED THE BLT AGAIN after we finished! And that filet is cooked perfectly every time. Yep we have come three times, order the BLT, filet, and another tasty lucky third item to try and savor every item this restaurant has to offer. This review is only for cocktails at the bar. We came here at the recommendation of the bartender at Hotel Blackhawk. So glad he told us about this absolute gem! The ambiance is fabulous, the menu has fun and clever names for the drinks and the service was really good. I ordered a sparkling cocktail called The Unwinding Hours. It was a raspberry cocktail with ode to Stevie Nicks--fave singer, you guys. Either way, it was delightful. Hubs had a lemon drop martini--his fave. My friends and I dined at Half Nelson a few weeks ago, and I've been struggling over whether to post an honest review for a restaurant that I'm very thankful to have around. As someone who was in the industry for 18 years in Chicago, I understand the power of reviews and would not post something negative on a whim. I was very frustrated when my party of six, who came in to celebrate a birthday, were asked to leave after 90 minutes because another party was waiting for our table. We weren't just sitting there not spending money. We'd ordered drinks (lots of them) appetizers, entrees and desserts! We'd barely taken a bite of our dessert when the host came to us and said we needed to leave because another party "had been waiting a long time for our table." We had a reservation and it had only been 90 minutes! We were a 6-top so I was SHOCKED that another table was booked at ours at exactly 90 minutes past our time. Industry standards for a 6-top is two hours. I've never in my whole life been asked to leave a restaurant, especially just as I was about to pay a $600 bill. In case you were wondering, we politely obliged, leaving uneaten dessert and refreshed drinks on the table. The whole party felt awkward and uncomfortable after that. I would have been more comfortable if the host (or maybe it was a manager) had been polite about it but she was not. She acted like we did something wrong. Look, I get it, you need to fill tables. Maybe just moving forward be a little more polite or possibly let us know before we sat that we'd only have 90 minutes to enjoy ourselves. Another idea would have been to offer us another table or seats at the empty bar, but none of that was offered. I get it. It's the QC and you are a big fish in a small pond, but there aren't a lot of us and we remember. read more

This was our first visit to The Half Nelson, we made reservations which was very easy. We arrived and were seated right, our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered the crab beneigts for our appetizer and they were delicious. For our main course I had the scallops and my wife had the salmon both were excellent.For dessert we got the creme brûlée which was one of the best we have had!! This place is a gem for the quad cities. They're chef is definitely one with a vision and ideas. The appetizer options are definitely what they are supposed to be, appetizing you to want to eat more and not overdoing the portion size like many restaurants do with their appetizers. The main entrée that my wife and I had was just absolutely mouthwatering. The chefs presentation is clean and tasteful without being pretentious and overly eccentric like some of the fine dining options out there. Whoever their decorator was really understands how to put together a uniform, feel with its mid century styling mashed into a historic building. Been here many times, food and service is always great. What I don't like is a restaurant with amble available seating in the dining room, they choose to seat us right next to tables on both sides of us in the bar area. This is after I requested that we be seated in the dining room. My problem with this is I don't want to hear the other parties conversations and in order to talk to my party I have to talk louder over them. read more

I would chose zero stars if that was an option. We stopped in on a whim. We hadn't been there in a while, but had always had good experiences in the past. We were seated at a table that had both of us on one side of the table with no chairs on the opposite side. Different, but ok. My husband felt weird and asked if he could could get a chair to sit across from me. Customers next to us offered him one of their chairs. A lady came up and unpleasantly stated he needed to give that chair back and move back to the other side of the table. He complied. The couple on the other side of us offered their chair. He asked the lady if he could use it. She said yes as long as it was put right back. He agreed but was irritated and made a comment to me when she walked away. What she didn't know was that he's had 2 strokes and sometimes I need to re-explain information to him. The next thing I know the horrid waitress and the lady (didn't know who she was) came over and were trying to berate him for "talking about her to the waitress". The waitress admitted that she "overheard" him talking to me. The extremely rude woman, as she so boastfully pointed out, turned out to be the owners wife. I'm a business owner and my husband has been with the same community business for over 25 years. Never have I witnessed such a ridiculous display of "would you like me to get the owner, who is my husband" or a business owner's spouse treat a customer so poorly. I will NEVER give them our business and for the first time in my life I will openly speak poorly of a locally owned business. Beyond disgusted with the treatment I witnessed from someone who claimed to own the business. read more

Their rotating menu is very fresh and creative. They made a mean Israeli couscous! The scallop dish was delish and fresh the first time but the second time I had it, it was so salty I couldn't eat it. We came here on a Friday night with some friends (6 total in our party). The waitress was very nice and her timing was great. The decor/ atmosphere here is also wonderful. Our group ordered the crab beignets and fried gnocchi for appetizers. They were both very good. 2 people in the group got flatbreads to eat off of the app menu for their dinner, another got the crab cakes, Jim bean pork chop, my boyfriend got the steak churrasco, and I got the seared duck. Here's where the bad news comes in. The pork chop our friend got was very overcooked and not very flavorful. The steak was not a very good cut of meat, lots of grizzle and no flavor besides the chimichurri sauce on it. For $26 you'll get a much better steak somewhere else. The duck...... it was awful. The waitress even said she was going to recommend it because I was on the fence about it. The duck was not seared at all. Huge chunks of fat on it that had not been rendered at all and the meat itself was very gummy and flavorless. It was very hard to stomach and I did not eat more than 3 bites. Didn't even taste the soy glaze it was supposed to have. The cilantro lime rice and bok choy also had very little flavor. Plus the bok choy was so wilted, with the duck being gummy it was just a plate of mushy food. For the price at this place I was excpecting exceptional food. If you can't cook duck right then don't put it on your menu- plain and simple. For drinks- I only had 1 drink and it was pretty good (the spicy mule but with club soda instead of ginger beer). My boyfriend had 2 drinks- manhattans. Had to ask for his second one specifically to be on the rocks because the first one he ordered came straight up. Was under the impression that on the rocks is standard for a Manhattan but maybe not? Another girl at our table had the same drink and they both tasted completely different. Second one was much better and brighter yellow. Overall, for a tab of over $100, you can get a much better dinner somewhere else. If you want a dining experience with LOUD MUSIC filled with foul language , this is the place for you! We had the worst experience we've ever had in a restaurant. We asked if they could change the music to something appropriate for dining in a nice restaurant (several diners had requested the same thing). The owner told us our opinion didn't matter. After another request for different music, we were asked to leave. We obviously will never go back to this restaurant. We delayed in trying this restaurant out, because it seemed like it was a good place to try if we were going out for dinner, but we weren't sure if it was going to be a good lunch spot. As it turns out, they do have a lunch menu, even though I could not find one anywhere online. I regret that I forgot to take a picture of it before they took it away. I actually think the place felt like a better dinner venue than for lunch. Very reasonably priced and delicious sounding dinner entrees and appetizers shown on the dinner menu, which was also able to be ordered from during lunchtime. They had some draft beers, wines, and bar drinks as well. The venue was attractive, and had attractive, sparkling clean decorations and features. There were not many people there for a lunchtime on a weekend, and it meant we had no other patrons sitting near us, although we did see a few groups come in during out time there. You would think this would make for a nice intimate feeling lunch, but the music was so loud we could not hear each other at the table, and even when the waitress was at the table, we had to strain to hear her and had to ask her to repeat herself. The lunch menu consisted of some salad and soup options, a few flatbreads, and a small variety of sandwiches, including a "Beyond" burger meatless burger and one other regular burger. The two burger options were fairly basic, but they had some unique sandwich options among the several sandwiches listed on the menu. The menu was somewhat limited, that was not a huge drawback, as presumably it meant lowered ticket times. As it turned out, the service time was adequate but not as speedy as might be expected. The sandwiches and soups we ordered at my table were flavorful and attractive. The fries were like steak fries, but with a crispy seasoned outside on them. We all agreed the fries were really good, and everything down to the last fry. The extra-loud music was the primary reason I cannot give another star, because it was so uncomfortable that I finally requested they turn down the music just a notch. Despite the request, the music stayed loud throughout the entire time we were there. The physical structure of the building made this worse, given the vast openness and impressively tall height of the ceilings. I did notice that between the songs, the sound of the kitchen was pretty loud, so perhaps they deliberately kept the music loud to drown out that noise. Either way, it was oppressively loud, making it difficult to concentrate on the others at the table, or even hear them at all without multiple attempts at having them repeat themselves. I hate asking places to turn down the music, and I usually am embarrassed to be "that person"... and that was only made worse when I finally worked up the nerve to ask if they would turn it down "just a little bit" and they didn't bother lowering it at all. Pretty bad that we couldn't hear very well, considering there were no other patrons in our section of the restaurant. If it was because of the kitchen, I wish they would have found a better way to muffle that noise. My last criticism is minor, which was how they processed your payment. While I realize it is efficient and probably easier for the staff, I dislike paying via iPad, where the waitress hovers above you as you sign and determine how much tip to leave. One more thing, which I would not call a criticism, but was still not ideal: the building did not seem to be handicapped accessible. Perhaps there was a side or rear entrance, but that would've felt more like entering through a service door or emergency exit, which would hardly feel inconspicuous for someone not wanting to single themselves for needing an entrance without stairs. read more

Half Nelson is just what the quad cities needed in our downtown. It is great food and a great environment, that you can tell was professionally designed. Have gone for personal dinners with my wife and kids, and also for business meetings as well. Would encourage anyone that has not been there to check it out soon. read more

Food is really good and unique. Bar is great to sit and work. And they make a good old fashion.
