I really don't want to leave a positive review as I don't want this place to get any busier. But I can't help myself. First off, all their food is either smoked or grilled. There's no fryer, microwave, or even oven in this place. And everything we've had there is super-yum and often healthy. They even have plenty of gluten-free options. The staff at the Handlebar are amazing - friendly and organized even on the busiest of nights. They truly seem to understand customer service and community. I'm tired of ordering a medium burger and having it come out rare. I sent the last one back and it still came out rare. Good food takes time and I was willing to wait. No more. This place used to be Desert Liquors here in AJ and they took over and renovated what I've alwayes called the 'please burn it down' Cactus Club. Now it is a terrific place to hang out and has a superlative selection of beers and can take home whatever you like too. Everything they have on tap is top knotch! On a recent trip to Apache Junction to visit my great grandma I was in search of a bar or restaurant with wifi where I could work remotely and hopefully get a good beer. I found the Handlebar and I could not have lucked out more. Five out of the six days I was in AZ you could find me here, laptop open, having the best time. First off, their beer selection is absurdly amazing. Coming from Portland OR I consider myself a bit of a beer snob, and this place has it all. The rotating taps are varied and fantastic, this is the sort of beer goldmine any snob would feel lucky to discover. They had multiple IPAs to satisfy my craving for hops, and they're pretty liberal with the tasters, so try a couple before you decide! The staff are amazing, everyone is so welcoming and helpful. The fact that I would sit for 5 hours a day in their bar using their wifi and all the staff were genuinely happy to have me there (taking up space) was so kind, and is a mark of the welcoming atmosphere the place exudes. Becky and Dennis were especially great, very personable and alway quick with the pints! The food, wow. For an out of the way town in Arizona the menu was on point. Sautéed/grilled asparagus and brussel sprouts paired with feta and balsamic respectively, absolutely delicious! The smoked potato skins (available on Fridays/Tuesdays) were amazing as well. They have an outdoor cooking area where most (if not all?) the food is prepared and cooked right in front of you. No french fries, no fryer, not your traditional AZ bar fare here, everything is original and delicious. When I was pulling in to this place I had some serious doubts, from the outside it looks like your run of the mill roadside crap restaurant. This could not be farther from the truth. This place is a real gem, and it's almost for the better that it doesn't look like much from the street. I hope it can continue to be a hidden gem. There is an outdoor patio dining area that is funky and fun in the best way. If it's not too hot (and you don't need to plug a laptop into an outlet like I did) sit out there! I feel so lucky to have chanced upon the Handlebar Bar and Grill while down here in the Southwest. It was a real find that made working on the road so much easier and happier for me. Thank you so much to the staff of the Handlebar for dealing with me day after day this past week, it meant a lot and I hope to be back! Scratch that, I definitely will be back! read more

Overall, decent place. Lets start with the positive - comfortable place, servers are adorable, and its an easy place to hang out. Food, is OK. The Southwest Chicken Panini is rock solid! Seriously, a great sandwich. One of the few drawbacks or negatives (which is easily fixable) are some of the cooking techniques on the veggies - hint* they shouldn't be soggy! I didn't read reviews about this place before deciding to check it out while visiting the area. From the outside, you expect to be walking in to a dive bar. Once you step through the threshold, you are welcomed with an impressive list of craft beers and an affordable but delicious menu. I enjoyed a tasty IPA and a peppercorn burger with a smoked acorn squash on the side. It was delicious and a much different meal than I was expecting to get. I have not yet developed the taste for craft beers and kept my fingers crossed that they'd have some of my preferred Coors light. Success! Everybody there had smiles on their faces and you could tell it was a laid back crowd that was just out for some Sunday fun. The age of customers ranged from 25-85. The band was great! Lovely, funky little gem we stumbled upon on a day trip to Canyon Lake! Quirky decor adds charm to this larger than it looks pub. Food choices are FAR from bar food, delicious, fresh with both standard and unique choices! It was over degrees but the outdoor seating was very comfortable with both misters and portable A/C units strategically placed. Live music was a nice touch without being intrusive on our conversation. The cherry on top was the fantastic service!! We didn't have to wait for anything, and they were packed!! Every staff member that made their way near our table made sure we had what we needed. My only complaint is that it's so far from our hometown of Tucson!! There I was. IN AJ, I did not expect it...but here is a place with great beer! Awesome. Actually I did expect it. A couple of friends told me I should check it out if I headed out in that direction. We hiked the Peralta Trail in the Superstition Wilderness and then found the place a little distance away. From the outside, I was unsure. It looks like many other places seen from the road in AJ, like it might be open... Inside it is a nice spot! Well crafted bar with craft beer promotional schwag in full abundance. A cooler full of excellent beer selections, a chalkboard beer list and menu. Nice setup! The draft selection is phenomenal! I was blown away at some of the choices. I settled on the Rye Wine from Four Peaks, a buddy had the Lagunitas Pils, and Sarah had the Crispin cider (which they did pour on ice without having to be told to!). The burgers were excellent, the brussel sprouts were awesome! Crustini's are a cool little item, especially if there is a vegetarian in your group! The only downfall was that there was no chicken on the menu. Apparently they are trying to stay local, grass fed and organic. But no chicken is rough! We asked about wine, and were told there was wine...but never saw a wine list. Whatever, this place is sweet! It will be a regular stop when hitting the Superstitions! read more

Great place for a burger and a beer. Had the bruschetta burger with side of coleslaw. Great meal the burger was cooked just right and served with a reduced balsamic sauce. The coleslaw had crumbles of blue cheese and walnuts, very well prepared. I like it when restaurants try to be a little different. We ate outside in a nice area. Loved this find after hiking at Lost Dutchman SP. Fantastic draft beers and they even had a favorite dark gluten free beer. Burgers are fantastic and we enjoyed the fryer-free sides. Nice shady patio that the pups loved too. Friendly staff all around - we will definitely be back! read more

The dishes here are very well thought out, with fancy, unexpected specials being refreshed fairly frequently, and much of the food being sourced locally or at least grass-fed/organic. The beer selection is fantastic, as well - especially for a little dive in Apache Junction! 18 taps, a cooler full of bottles and cans, and many local options are always available. The owners, Alec and Jeff, are passionate about what they're doing and it shows in everything they do - from the wonderful beer dinners to the flavorful food to their inviting personalities. I am only giving 3 stars because of the wonky hours (occasionally they're closed when the hours state they should be open - but it is a family business, and things come up sometimes) and the inconsistent service late afternoon/early evening when the owners aren't around. Other than that, if you're in AJ or Gold Canyon, this is well worth a stop, for the beer, food, and cozy atmosphere! read more

A friend moved to Apache Junction and we were looking for good eats nearby. This is a hidden gem. They don't deep fry anything - they smoke and use the hot griddle to prepare their food.
