Have eaten here a handful of times over the years on vacation. The food is mediocre and way overpriced. Staff is rude & the place is dirty. Dirty diaper was laying in the parking lot, which could be forgiven if from the result of a visitor. Great stop for a quick but good seafood meal or burger. Simple menu with fried seafood options and good skinny fries. Hush puppies were wonderful. Fried shrimp basket was very good. Kinda a hole In the wall dive decor but good for a quick stop or carry out. read more

Previously for the last 10 years we have loved this place! Unfortunately today when we stopped by there were approx. 10 people ahead of us we were told 20-30 min wait. They had no chili and no slaw. The crab cakes have been taken off the menu. The register help left with one person working the grill and the front, leaving just the cook. We waited at least 45 minutes. The food was underwhelming and there was no explanation or apologies by the staff. At least 8 people came in behind us that were advised of the wait and they all left. For the prices my expectations are a little higher. read more

Disappointed at my visit last week!! I was so looking forward to my good ole' minced pork NC style BBQ and that's not what they are now serving. It was shredded and already had hot sauce in it. I don't like hot sauce. Also, the cole slaw was missing. The cash only aspect was a surprise, thankfully I had a little cash. I just don't carry it much in the age of debit cards any longer. Last visit, prior to this, was about 2 or 3 years ago. I got a plate FULL of BBQ sandwich and fries and slaw and could n't begin to eat it all. Not the case any longer. Cheap eats are great plus they have seafood if you have a little more money. Small, old building nof fancy so don't expect ambiance. do expect good fast food. 4 Oz burger & fries only $4.99 & it's excellent. I haven't been in years but always remembered them having the best grilled cheese and french fries, went today and was very disappointed, my grilled cheese was burnt, although they did offer to make me another one I just scrapped off the burnt part, but it still had the burnt taste. French fries were good, sweet tea was awful, threw it away and got a canned soda. Unfortunately I will not be returning, it's a shame the iconicness has been lost. read more

Don't let the looks of the place fool you! It may not be too pretty and the drink machine may have been leaking all over the floor while we were there, but who cares when the food is this good! No, you're not coming here for "fine dining", or fancy ambience. But the food is terrific! I've been coming here nearly 40 years, through a succession of owners, and I have to say the food currently is even better than before. My favorite has always been the Carolina BBQ, which is very flavorful, lean, with crusty bits - yum. It comes now with seasoned fries, and their hush puppies are just perfect. We came because of the good reviews and were disappointed. Given the location we expected good seafood and it didn't taste fresh. The flounder was fishy everything was really heavily breaded, fried and over cooked. Prices were a bit better than other places but not worthwhile. Would not come back. read more

I have been coming to Hatteras for over 40 years. I am not sure how I missed this place. Tired of spending too much money on fish and shrimp I could cook at home much better than the restaurants I had been to, we ventured into Hatterasman. It is a beach dive, but it was one of the best burgers I have eaten-Fresh and juicy.The couple next to us had a pound of gorgeous plump steamed shrimp which I saw is on the menu for an amazing 10.95! This place is small town charm and yummy food. It is nothing fancy but the food was great, the people who work there were friendly and helpful . We had a great experience- the owners are very supportive of veterans. There was another review that said Haterraans is closed - wrong- they do have odd hours but this whole town was hit very hard by hurricane Matthew and they are still working to put it back together. First off, the place is a total dive - which in my book is a fantastic thing. That's where you usually find the best food and service. The Hattersman does not disappoint! Fast, friendly service and incredible food. The 'Hattersman Burger' was huge and ridiculously good along with the seasoned fries. The size of their hush puppies is insane, my husband and I have never seen any that large and we order them on a regular basis, these were great! They also have ice cream, which my kids loved. Add to that having corn hole set up outside and the fact that they deliver (for those lazy beach days) = unbeatable! We'll be back for years to come. read more

This place is disgusting. A few months ago we came in after others calling this place "a dive" and decided to give it a try. We ordered a simple country breakfast plate (the usual... eggs bacon hash browns) and the whole plate came so dredged in grease it was almost wet on the bottom. After we ended up attempting to eat our meal since it was already paid for and were heading out the door, disappointed with our meal, the chick that had a bunch of facial piercings and tattoos screamed across the restraunt "How was it?!" I said "too much oil!" She replied, "you mean butter?? Want me to make you another plate." Never again. I've been to bad restraunts. This was very distasteful to say the least. read more

On a rainy day in Hatteras, early in the season there were only a handful of us in the Hatterasman. The folks at the counter could not have been sweeter, and took our order immediately. We ordered a grouper sandwich to share, onion rings and an fresh-brewed unsweetened tea and moved to a booth where there were a couple of current magazines on hand to read (nice touch!). The owner brought our basket to the booth, and without being asked had divided the meal in half for each of us. That's a really nice touch, considering couples like us are used to leaning over the same plate as we share meals big enough for two. And this sandwich certainly was. Even divided, the crispy fried grouper eclipsed the bun. The lettuce was fresh and the tartar offered a nice tang. The onion rings were batter-dipped sweet onions, delicious and crisp. And as an added touch, the owner tossed on a handful of shoe string French fries even though we subbed out for onion rings. Stopped by for breakfast or lunch couple times this month. Bacon, egg, cheese biscuits are delish. Good fried chicken. Very old place that may have seen better days but food good and staff friendly. Tuesday and Thursday nights they have cornhole tourneys. Pretty crowded with lots of folks having fun. read more

Ummm.... best compared to what? Maybe my food standards are high but this place isn't even in the "cool dive" spot place. There were several of us in our party....I think we would have been happier at McDonalds. We came here hoping for a genuine fresh seafood dive experience. What we got was flies and subpar food. My husband i went there this past saturday Aug 15 2015. Hoping for some good food, we had been there a few years ago and it was awesome. Well today it was poor service, food was hot,but the problem is that when we walked in placed our order and then waited at least 25 minutes for our food. Meanwhile, about 6 other people came in after us and got there food within about 5 to 10 minutes. The issue i believe was racially biased, so for that reason we will never stop there again. Also the place was very hot inside,dirty tables you could see food still on the openings on the table. This was the first time anything like this has happened to us in over 25 yrs. read more
