My husband and I considered The St Regis, and The Four Seasons Hotel's before booking The Hay-Adams. We booked because of it's proximity to the White House. We are not fan's of the President, but are big fan's of most thing's DC. We arrived in time for the media circus surrounding the Supreme court hearing's. Despite the rush we were able to check in relatively easily. Hay-Adams is a beautiful hotel that is ideally located, and very well run. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in DC! The location is perfect. The rooms are comfortable, well equipped and feel like you are enjoying a piece of history. The staff is a 12/10. They were able to get us into our room early at 11AM without question. The restaurant could not be more delightful. The servers got to know us by the end of our stay, and each meal we enjoyed thoroughly. We loved the basement speakeasy as well. I can't wait for our next stay! read more

Unprofessional staff at the front desk, especially the French guy. I made a special request to have two rooms interconnected (I did it online and called them to make sure everything was okay). When we arrived, they told us that it was impossible to have two interconnected rooms. I expressed my frustration and suddenly, somehow they found two interconnected rooms. The French guy was smirking and laughing with his colleague in front of us. When I check out nobody asked me how was my stay, whether I liked everything etc. Instead, the French guy just emailed me the invoice and that was it, even though the day before the checkout I stopped at the front desk and told them that my room wasn't cleaned up (there were dry drops of someone else's urine on the toilet, there was hair on the floor in the bathroom and the room itself was very dusty). read more

The rooms were clean, comfortable and decorated beautifully with the classic charm you would expect. Not forgetting to mention, it is located directly across the street from the White House. Upon entering the South Terrace on the ninth floor the stunning view takes your breath away! The food, wine and service were impeccable. This is a very classy, high end, $$$ Hotel. But if you can afford it, it's worth it. Historical and just beautiful. The service from all avenues is top notch from the employees at the front desk to the actual cleaning of the rooms. It is not a completely modern hotel but we loved it. Nice change and everything worked great. Very comfortable and honestly it's not easy to please me. At the front desk, must try the oatmeal cherry cookies....so good. Chocolate chip too! Made fresh everyday! The hotel has complimentary Mercedes car service in the morning and evening. Very nice touch. As soon as you walk into the hotel, there are always 2 people to open the door for you - always. Concierge is so helpful and so happy too. Beds were so comfortable. The Lafayette restaurant downstairs is gorgeous. Breakfast is so delicious. See my review for that. It's a must. Looks like all of the power elite of DC have breakfast here. Location is perfect. This is a 5-star hotel overlooking the White House and it was truly a 5-star experience in the nation's capital. We stayed here mainly for the view. The meeting rooms located on the 6th floor are called "Top of the Hay". You can book a series of rooms for meetings and the George Washington Room does overlook the White House. It is a beautiful panorama of the city skyline and you can see the monuments in the distance. This is the perfect backdrop for weddings, meetings, or special dinners. Lobby: the lobby is historic with a huge freshly decorated bouquet of fresh lillies. The scent fills the space and the staff is ready to greet you as you enter the hotel. Everyone I worked with was extremely professional and accommodating. Restaurant: There is a dining room called Lafayette off of the lobby and also a dark bar called "off the Record". The bar inside "off the Record" is very classic in design with plush red walls and a quiet and speak-easy feel. Rooms: I loved my room at the Hay Adams. There was a fire place, stucco ceilings, a plush King size bed and two chairs next to the glass doors. I had a very nice view of the church across the street. The bathroom has golden fixtures, a frosty window door, and very nice beauty products from Italy. I like how there is real glass with no plastic and the turn down service was amazing. Each night after I returned from dinner, there was a different beauty product with the robe on the bed. One night it was eye gel, the next it was lip balm. Then a piece of Leonidas Belgian chocolate was added and I slept like a baby. Location: You are within walking distance of the White House, monuments and restaurants. The closest airport is DCA. Meetings: I would ask for the meeting space on the top floors for the view. Concorde on the base level is not that scenic. Do not use laser pointers if you are on Top of the Hay and I would advise to put black tape over it. The security at the White House is very tight. read more

I rarely take the time to write an extended negative review, but in this case I think it's worth the energy. Our stay at the Hay-Adams was the worst hotel stay I've had in recent memory. In my opinion, the quality of the service was below unsatisfactory and bordered on insulting. Among the issues we dealt with in our one-night stay: - After requesting a portable crib and being assured one would be sent, we had to follow up five separate times with the front desk and housekeeping over a two-hour period to finally have the crib delivered to the room. This occurred despite being assured by staff at each juncture that the crib would be sent immediately. - The air conditioner in the room was broken, and despite multiple calls to staff and assurances that it would be fixed immediately, the A/C was never fixed. - At checkout I was told I would be e-mailed an invoice, but I had to e-mail the hotel a day later to get the invoice sent. - Upon checkout I expressed frustration with the situation and was told a manager would be in contact with us. It has been a week without any contact from the hotel. It felt like we were on some kind of secret blacklist where the staff were singularly focused on ignoring us and making our stay less than pleasant. This type of service is unacceptable for any hotel, but it's particularly egregious for a hotel that charges $500+ per night. If I were to spend that much on a hotel again, I'd go to the Jefferson. But if not, I'd just stay at the Holiday Inn Express and know that I'd get better treatment. read more

This location was perfect! My husband can't walk much due to cancer so I wanted to be close to everything. And I wanted to spoil him. This fit the bill! Beautiful historic building as close as you can get to the White House and impeccable service. Greeted warmly everytime. I don't usually use a concierge but he wasn't busy so i asked a bunch of questions. Sandor went above and beyond for us! Great ideas and font of knowledge too. Hard to keep up with all the museums and how they are handling COVID. But he looked up so much for me. I even used one of their complimentary bikes. Ate breakfast at the restaurant. House made granola with yogurt and beautiful berries. Dinner down in the bar called Off The Record. My club sandwich was delicious. The turkey was so moist. I don't usually like bacon but this was more meat than fat. The only complaint about our whole stay was the chocolate chip cookies we ordered for dessert were not up to the standard of everything else. Because everything else was superb! We don't usually stay at 5 star hotels but occasionally you have to spoil yourself. This is a great place to do so. And we got an amazing deal on a late summer Sunday night stay. read more

Overnighted for a next day meeting. Location is great. The hotel reminds me of so many of these older, smaller, luxurious hotels, like the Connaught in London, or the Carlyle in NYC many years ago. Service was absolutely top notch, the restaurant was also on the smaller side, flawless, with a limited menu. Breakfast room service was also prompt and exactly as ordered. Drawbacks are small bathrooms with zero counter space, no separate shower, it's in the tub, although water pressure was good. Not the best towels, and in general, the place is not up to 21st century standards. Unless you get a suite, two people would be cramped in one room. Next time, it's the Jefferson. read more

Strange I didn't leave a review. Wonderful location directly across from the White House. I was told my Pekingese Prince was the most well behaved pooch they ever hosted. Appreciate they allow pets. Mine is more civilized than most heathen people. He enjoyed sprawling out in the lobby and let the commoners walk around him. Lol. Only 4 stars and not 5 as our room was a bit dated. I was looking forward to a luxurious bath after a long road trip only to be greeted by an old retro fitted tub and old feeling room. It definitely was large but didn't evoke an "ooh ahh" out of me. Loved the restaurant on site and absolutely appreciate the exquisite fine wines by the glass, especially my Gevry Chambertain, but could not believe in an establishment such as this there'd be spelling errors on the menu. Why does that happen everywhere all the time these days? It's beyond annoying and I pointed it out to the lovely manager who was horrified...as he should be sitting across from the White House. I didn't venture into the bar. Lol, didn't want to be lured out by some lascivious politician and dumped in a park somewhere...thanks mom for that programming...but I will definitely go for a drink on my next visit. I don't choose this hotel on all D.C. visits as I generally prefer staying in Georgetown but can definitely recommend it. The Hay-Adams is a historic boutique hotel that has been around since the '20s. There are 145 guestrooms and 21 suites, some that offer views of the White House, Lafayette Park, or St. John's Church. The bathrooms have marble bathrooms with brass fixtures, a Bose CD system, and European linens; the suites have separate living and dining areas with separate bedrooms, ornamental ceilings, and fireplaces. One can get drinks at Off the Record or have a pleasant breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner at The Lafayette. One thing that really sets the Hay-Adams apart is the service - from the moment when the hubs and I walked up the cobble-stoned driveway to the front entrance, the doorman greeted us and opened the door; inside, there are a couple more staff who greeted us a second time around as well. There is a mini sitting area, and during the holidays, you can marvel at their beautiful Christmas tree. A front receptionist and a concierge is readily available for any assistance or questions. Just note that there are separate elevators that lead up to the rooms/suites and to the Lafayette restaurant. If you get a chance to go to their rooftop, you'll also have some beautiful panoramic views of the park and of the White House. Oh you fancy, huh? This place is great! I came here for my company's private happy hour and had a wonderful time. Our room was on the 9th floor (which you can get to in a secret elevator. Just call me Agent 99!) and had a gorgeous view of the White House. (see pic for the view) The staff was wonderful and the food was excellent. Our happy hour menu consisted of three stations: Asian, Latin and Italian inspired plus an adorable dessert table overflowing with mini versions of pies, cakes and candy. At the Latin inspired table there was shrimp cocktail, steak fajitas, chicken quesadillas and multiple kinds of salsa (all were excellent). The Asian table had 3 types of dumplings (turkey, pork and vegetarian) and duck spring rolls that were hand rolled upon order. The Italian table was my favorite since it was packed with tortellini with alfredo sauce, penne with tomato basil sauce, caesar salad and garlic bread (basically for me, it was the most vegetarian friendly). At the end of the evening they brought out several dessert boxes so we could stock up on mini-goodies for the road. My favorites were the mini-apple pies, salted caramel cupcakes and handmade marshamallows. If you're planning on hosting an event here, you won't be disappointed. Platters are instantly refreshed (seriously, I thought they were using Harry Potter magic) and hot food is served nice and hot, cold food, cold. Sounds like a no brainer but you'd be surprised at how many establishments fail at this. I was taken here over the weekend for a short birthday getaway. Our room wasn't ready right away so they sent us to the hotel bar for a drink on them. The grapefruit margarita is delicious. The hotel is right across from the White House and the rooftop view is amazing. Every single one of the staff members we encountered were friendly and very helpful. The rooms were very nice and the old architecture was beautiful. The beds are the most comfortable I've ever slept in. On the most recent trip, I booked a room for three nights knowing I really just needed it for two, but my exec needed a place to work during the final day and I didn't want to oust them from their room early if their schedule didn't demand it. It turned out the exec left the hotel at 12:30pm and we figured we'd eat the cost of the extra night. But Housekeeping or someone noticed the exec left, the hotel called to confirm that was the case, and then didn't charge us for the extra night! When I was visiting there was construction going on so I couldn't get a real feel for what immediate surroundings were like. It is a beautiful old building. The service is 5 star, couple of issues with room service, but not a big deal. It is an older building, you can hear everything next door to you and the hallways. I've been here multiple times and every time it's the same experience. This time it was just blatant rudeness. I arrived at the hotel 8:15 am and no one was at the door to open/ greet . The thin young Caucasian male never greeted me once I was in the lobby waiting for the elevator. Hours later I am waiting in the lobby and walking my counterpart out and they open then door and greet her. When I'm leaving, there is an asian woman, the same young man from earlier plus one for taller gentleman in the lobby. I had three heavy bags on me and not one them offered to open a door, carry a bag or even speak to me. Just stared at me. I'm in this hotel monthly for my clients and I'm just tired of the poor treatment when I see everyone around me being greeted and treated like a valued guest. read more

Was visiting the white house when I observed a manager from your establishment yelling at some officers that were just standing infront of the hotel. I thought he might be a pprotesto at firdt then I saw he had a name tag and walked into the hotel after berating them. His name was a Mr.Persaud. From what I gathered after he left was that he is a manager at the establishment. Very unprofessional. My family frequently uses this hotel but I dont know how to feel about a hotel that allows its managers to be so rude to our public servants. It appears the officers have been in the area because of recent unrest and are there to protect the plaza and the very hotel that manager works for. I had my wedding here and stayed here the night before and night of my wedding and everything was absolutely perfect. The entire staff was courteous, aware that I was getting married (so they left me alone the day of the wedding) and did everything they could to accommodate my requests. I was placed in a beautiful suite directly beneath where my parents were staying to have close access to them and also just close enough to the Top of the Hay so it was easy for me to get to my wedding, but also far enough away I had privacy. The room was beautiful, clean and absolutely lovely. The staff was quick to respond to anything you needed and the stay was wonderful. The food we had at the wedding was spectacular - I beyond appreciated their accommodation of everything (and I mean everything) being gluten free - none of my guests had any idea we had done that and raved about the food being beyond delicious. DC is awash with five star luxury hotels, however since the pandemic the quality of service and amenities that were commonplace in hotels like The Four Seasons Georgetown, The Ritz, The Mandarin Oriental and others have disappeared. These once reliable brands have gone down market and you no longer receive value for the inflated rooms fees. The Hay-Adam's is a charming delightful small boutique five star hotel located steps from the White House. The Hay is old school elegance, impeccable service, beautiful rooms, puffy light comforters on the beds, quiet and restful - pure comfort. Every detail has been addressed, high end toiletries and bath products in the rooms, morning coffee in the lobby, a spacious business center with comfortable chairs and large monitors, stocked with coffee and water, prompt service and the best hotel concierge team in the city. The location is also excellent, much better then Georgetown. There is a reason why guests return here. It's the best luxury hotel DC has to offer. Highly recommended. read more

My 8 y/o daughter traveled with me for work in NYC; and we made a mother/daughter vacation out of it with a trip to Washington D.C. With just two-weeks of planning, we booked a Superior Room at the Hay-Adams for our 3-night getaway. We each had our own Stearns & Foster bed; a full- and twin-sized bed, respectively. The beds were decorated with chinoiserie toile headboards & bedskirts that matched the floor to ceiling drapes. The cozy 345-sf room was light & airy, and tastefully decorated with crown moulding, brass fixtures, and colonial furniture that tied the romantic decor together. I've previously written that I love nightly turndown service bc it's such a warm & inviting way to go to bed. The Hay-Adams makes nightly turndown a step beyond ordinary for children with a nightly cupcake and, on our last night, an edible White House filled with housemade cookies & a thoughtful note from Franz at the front desk. The historic property is on Lafayette Square & across from the White House, with stunning views of the North Lawn from the hotel's rooftop and steps outside its front door. You can't beat the location in terms of its walking proximity to the White House & the National Mall. Then, Uber makes it easy to get around every neighborhood. As an aside, I usually opt for Uber X. However, in D.C., we never waited more than a couple minutes for Uber Pool, which saved us half the fare & made Uber as inexpensive as riding the Metro but with door-to-door service. Finally, Eric Gammill is the head concierge who elevates the Hay-Adams to this five-star rating. On our way out one morning, I stopped at his desk & asked Eric if he might have tickets to the National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC). Without hesitation, Eric provided us tickets for a visit that same afternoon. Those familiar with the museum will appreciate that timed passes to the NMAAHC are highly sought after with a 3-month waiting list, and even efforts to obtain those advanced passes aren't guaranteed. Eric cannot possibly know how grateful I am for the timed passes. I tried obtaining them online for two weeks, to no avail. Although we toured the White House, and our Congressman arranged a tour of the US Capitol Building, this unplanned NMAAHC visit was the highlight of our trip. Beautiful hotel, great room decor with exceptional location! That said, 1k per night (stayed a few) and the room was so noisy. The floors beyond loud. They desperately need to reinforce those squeaky floors. Ask for the top floor because if you have a night owl or an early bird (like I did) you'll be up at night or up at 5am- No alarm needed. I wish I could attach the recording I took of the noises... I never give one star but there were two other jaw dropping incidents that happened, I dare not write. I'm awfully stunned, sad and disappointed. We moved to the St. Regis got a beautiful room silent as can be, bigger and 30% less in price. Not the same luxury decor but it has its own style. I appreciate how when you check in they all memorize your name at the St. Regis. I'm also a little surprised that this hotel is a top pick on Andrew Harper! read more

this was our third stay... second this year... we stay in the same room... we are looking for a place to relax dine in the room while looking at the white house... first stay they mixed up and forgot parts of two meals... second stay a couple more mixed up meals... and this last time... in room romantic dining, is not having your wife watch you eat while they figure out what she ordered... it got to a point where we were not sure what was going to come... I ate more cold meals than on any trip... But what really disappointed me is that feeling of its a special place to go... lots of little things that make the difference... one is the front door was not managed, my wife was walking in and a large man all but knocked her down.... I also had several times at the front door, people in your face... there were many other problems... This is for the hotel...which was absolutely wonderful. Both my husband and I are heavy travelers and know the hotel experience. The one we had here went just above and beyond. The service was top notch. Top to bottom. From the valet and doorman to the front desk, to the bartender at Off The Record, to the guys in the restaurant. Even the cleaning service was super friendly when we saw them. This is truly everything as there are so many hotels that offer great beds and good design. Beyond the service...the design. This historic hotel is absolutely gorgeous - the old wood and the gilded detail is everywhere. Ceilings to die for. The bathrooms are plush, cozy, and the lighting is the most forgiving I've experienced. The marble and brass fixtures add such a luxurious touch. I will say the body towels were very thin and seemed a little old. Conversely, the bed and the linens are wildly comfortable and again, luxurious. The walls and doors to the rooms are so THICK and insulated. You hear nothing from anyone above or next to you. AT ALL. So great if you're a light sleeper - like me! You feel so tucked away and enveloped in your room. Another plus to being in an old building. Tons of closet space and a lot of lighting everywhere - most with dimmers. There's a little bluetooth Bose speaker, tons of outlets to charge phones, etc. It's all the little details. The location is superb. You walk out and you're looking at the White House!! You can walk to all the amazing museums and some historic old bars like The Old Ebbitt. You can walk to Dupont Circle, you can walk to the Verizon Center and see the Caps or the Wiz. If you wanna bounce around the city on the metro, there's a stop a block away. This is such a beautiful, elegant, historic hotel. Off The Record is such a cool little DC bar to boot.
