I've been coming here since the early 2000s if not earlier. This is the rye bread that's used in several delis around the area. These are the breads that are often used in the sandwiches around the areas. These are the rolls that are often used around the sandwich shops in the area. They have the best raisin bread in the entire world. They have the best onion rolls, and cranberry rolls available anywhere I know of. The onion roll goes great with a simple egg, or fresh turkey. While the cranberry roll, combine cream cheese, a bit of sugar and fresh butter, stir till smooth and put on a warm roll. Great way to start your morning with a cup of coffee. The chocolate croissants are perfectly made. Warm them up. The whole grain loaf is like nothing you've ever tasted. It is amazing. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. It's like going into one of the best bakers you've ever gone to. Not for desserts. For baked goods. And they have a very good deli. And the best staff ever! read more

Hearth Baker on North Broad Street, Lansdale, PA, knows from flour and water. Bread is their game, and they play it well. The shop space was smaller than expected. The left wall was full of wooden racks loaded with beautiful loaves of bread. They were large and extremely tempting. As I was there 30 minutes before closing, they didn't have a full panoply of their creations, but still enough to satisfy me. One of the women behind the counters attended to me, advising what was still available. She first mentioned a half load of sliced rye, which I immediately said, "yes," to. The aroma was strong and I knew I would love it toasted with butter and jam. She next suggested their dinner rolls, of which she bagged a dozen mixed grains, but only charged me for six. She knew what she wanted to sell while fresh, and which would have longer shelf life until the next day. I also grabbed a few large peanut butter cookies to sample later with coffee. Hearth Baker had no pastry, so I wasn't distracted by cakes, pies or other sweet possibilities. I didn't see those sandwiches mentioned by others, but anything stuffed between their bread/rolls would have to be great. What I did buy was excellent. The rye had a slightly sweet, yet grainy savoriness that was delicious, both fresh and toasted. Perfect for sandwiches or accompanying soup. The rolls were also quite good, with semolina and other light/dark flours to modify their flavors. Also terrific just sliced and buttered and ripped apart by my incisors. Those peanut butter cookies were also awesome. A little crisp on the edges, yet chewy toward the middle. Plenty of PB taste. The Hearth Baker would be a great place to learn the artisan craft of baking breads. read more

Wow I've driven by this place a million times and I've never stopped in. What a huge mistake. I ordered DoorDash delivery and I got an egg salad hoagie, rolls, a loaf, Mac salad and cole slaw. Every bread or item I've purchased here has been delicious. My grandmother used to drive an hour to go to this bakery so I'm glad I can go often. Love the rolls, sourdough, and pumpernickel swirl breads the most. Tomato pie is excellent. I always try to get something new when I go. Staff is great. I love freshly baked rye bread but I am reluctant to buy my bread here. Should I buy here or not? Their bread quality is very inconsistent and ranges from excellent to poor. I never know if my bread is good or bad. The rye bread often is very light in color, absolutely flavorless (Am I chewing on cotton?) and has large air bubbles in the center so that one can't even spread butter on it. At other times the bread is perfect. It is dense, dark and tasty as rye bread should be. This bakery definitely needs to improve their quality control. read more

I recently discovered the HEARTH BAKER Home Made Chocolate Chip Cookies. This is my "GO-TO" place for the BEST Rye Bread, BEST Italian Hoagies, as well as the BEST Tuna Salad. I needed to leave a 5-STAR Review after recently enjoying the FRESHEST soft & chewy cookies EVER, and to let everyone know they NEED to try these! The Hearth has become our new sandwich place, and now, for home-baked cookies. As I waited for my order to be bagged, I noticed Chocolate Chip Cookies on a table. They were LARGE, home-made, and I couldn't miss the GIANT CHUNKS of chocolate chips throughout these cookies. Knowing The Hearth never disappoints, I bought the 1/2 dozen size, so I didn't need to run back later (For MORE) after trying these. Good choice! They lasted a few short minutes. We didn't even get a chance to order from here for our office luncheon. I had eaten there and thought very highly of it but was disappointed with what happened when my office wanted to order. I called to find out when the website would be back up and a young women answered sounded disinterested in finding out for me to order and told me to call back to get the menu faxed because she couldn't do that for me that day when I called. I called the next day at 10 ish to get the menu and it was faxed. Half of it was cut off and a note was written on it that prices may change anytime so what we read could be different ? Why wouldn't you send updated prices on a menu? Very disorganized for a small place that I thought had good food. read more

I'm from Virginia and this place was recommended by my family I arrived at 8:30 am and assumed they were open 1st of all because it's a BAKERY and because their front door was wide open! Put simply, it's hard to top the Italian bread that comes out of the ovens in this place. Their rustic Italian loaves and the steak rolls are simply amazing; for me, at least, sandwiches with Hearth Baker bread are still the golden standard to which all sandwich breads must be compared, and virtually all of them come up lacking in some way. They also happen to be dirt-cheap and Hearth produces truly huge numbers of six-inch steak rolls each day, so they're an absolute necessity for the self-catered party. I'll admit to having found better specialty breads in other places; Hearth doesn't even try to make things like pie bread, and the best rye in the area is still in the city, but with that caveat, Hearth is one of the best bakers in the region, and possibly THE best Italian baker anywhere outside the Italian Market itself. read more

I've been going to the Hearth Baker since I was a kid and continue going there for their amazing bread, rolls, and sandwiches. Their sourdough is to die for! Whenever we're making food that requires good bread I'm headed to the Hearth. I used to work close by and would go there for lunch once a week. I miss that greatly. Their deli sandwiches and hoagies are awesome! So do yourself a favor and stop buying that grocery store bread that's shipped in frozen and baked at the store and go to the Hearth and get real bread! This is a tough review. On one hand, the hoagies that they make here are so delicious. Honestly, it pains me a little not to go there, but the staff is always so rude! Seriously, the hoagies are never ready when they say that they will be, and if you question how long it's taking, you get an instant attitude. I can't believe my good luck finding this place yesterday. I had an Italian hoagie that was excellent. The roll was perfect and the ingredients delicious. A combination that can't be beat. On top of that I brought home a loaf of their raisin cinnamon bread. My wife and I loved it. Never again will we purchase that mass produced raisin bread sold in grocery stores. Can I just say wow?! Those if you who know me understand I'm hard to please. This place is awesome! I came for lunch and ordered stuffed pepper soup.. I must immediately make this at home.
