First visit here was just a watering hole visit for a couple brewskis. What a downer- our brews were way too long in coming from a restaurant that wasn't all that busy at 3:23. Then my brew was way too warm to be called "Stella". Top it off with a waitress with a not so friendly attitude- gee, sorry we made you go up the stairs to serve us. -so- only a brewski. Die hards that we are, and surrendering to our friends's insistent urgings for eating there, we decided to return next day at 5:00ish for dinner. Much improvement, but damn, $7.75 for three potato cakes? Okay- I'm a tourist this time- break it off gently. The cordon blue was okay and the side of purple Kraut was a bit too vinegary for me. Old Heidelberg is a frustrating place. The problem is that regardless of when you find yourself sitting down to a table here, be it smack in the middle of Oktoberfest or sometime in mid April, Old Heidelberg will ALWAYS be out of something that you want. The other side of the frustrating part is that the food here is actually really good, so when they're out of something you like, it stings that much more. Beyond that, the service is also not great at all. I understand that Oktoberfest is a busy time, but having lived in Gainesville I found myself in Helen several times a year - much during the "off season" - and this is also a pretty universal problem here. It takes a while for someone to come seat you and it takes a LOT longer for someone to come by and take your order. Once you finally get your food, at least it's good. The pretzels are fantastic, the mashed potatoes stand on their own and do not need the gravy at all, the spätzle is very good, and of course the wursts are exactly what you would expect from a decent quality German restaurant. The potato pancakes are a little on the greasy side, but only a hair beyond what you should be expecting from potato pancakes anyway. read more

Delicious food and delicious beer, but god awful music, combined with a very long wait for seriously overpriced food earned this place a 3 Star from me. I was with my exchange student from Bavaria, a german teacher and they really liked the food. She finally brought my salad, but then promptly left before we could ask for utensils or refills. I'm not sure if they are short staffed tonight but considering this is a tourist/resort town, I expect much more. EDIT: food FINALLY came out after another 15 minutes of writing this. Positives: Got the sausage platter, and it was fantastic. In our opinion, this had a more authentic feel than Old Bavaria Inn (where we ate last night), though both were decent. We had to laugh at the corny music though - popular old American songs sung in German lyrics. You know you're in Helen when you hear a Johnny Cash sung by a person who sounds like Johnny Cash, but sings in fluent German. Of course, who are we to say that Cash didn't know German! It was getting later on our 1st evening in Helen so we stopped in at the Heidelberg. The 1st person we met said just go upstairs . Stairs were tricky for me especially because they are not well lit und I had a knee brace und cane plus I'm legally blind. I said the lettuce is fine but we'd both still like tomatoes. They never came. When we had ordered our half n half tea no straws und she came back n just glided by with a quick toss of 2 straws. Her only redeeming was she refilled my tea without asking. The schnitzel was very small und the spaetzel was good but not revealed. We were not happy but she was never at our table long enough to ask for the manager. I liked the t shirt the young man was wearing und enquired about purchasing one. He said to check downstairs. We came back the next afternoon und I knocked at the door und could see someone wearing the same shirt sitting at a chair. This old style of German food is a little bit off the beaten path, the food is worth it. The food was a good alternative to the norm. The service was fast and friendly. The seating us a bit cramped, be prepared for that. The German potato salad was good, had a lot of dill, but still not overwhelming. Any of the brats was worth the trip. Personally I could have done without the German polka music, such a small restaurant only adds to the difficulty in talking with a date. The restaurant was clean, but us in need of a few repairs. Had a hard time rating this place. First off, it was a very cute restaurant, especially if you get a table on the porch after dark as far as ambience. I ordered the bratwurst sampler and the brats were pretty good. The German potato salad and sauerkraut were lacking big time. Unfortunately, I have an awesome German restaurant in my hometown that is hard to beat. My daughter ordered the sauerbraten and that tasted good, but I was very disappointed in the pretzel as an appetizer. If you can't eat pork for any reason don't come here. The menu doesn't tell you that the potato salad, the jaager cream sauce, mashed potatoes, and even the sauerkraut has bacon in them. We chose this Lounge over the Beer Garden outside because we went on a cold night...The room smelled of smoke, which was ok with me. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive. We ordered two cups of German Beer, and we kind of liked the taste of it though we usually dislike beer. YES! My girlfriend and I visited Helen for the first time a few weeks ago. On the way there, we searched for restaurants and stumbled upon The Heidelberg. Upon reading the excellent reviews and skimming the menu, we decided to give it a shot. We had to wait for maybe 20 minutes, which we didn't mind because it was allowing for socially distant seating. We sat outside, and although the outside space is a bit small, there was only one other group out there, and the view of the town was great! All the reviews we read recommended the pretzel, and let me tell you that it did not disappoint!! It was by far the best pretzel I've ever had. It came with beer cheese and melted garlic butter that were both so good I nearly drank the leftover sauce...kidding (or am I??) We also ordered one of the bratwurst...I can't remember which one, but our server recommended it, and it was fantastic. We split the pork schnitzel sandwich with sauerkraut, and we also tried the the Paulner Oktoberfest beer. Everything was delicious. This restaurant had some of the best food I have had in a while, and my girlfriend and I were both talking about it the rest of the week. I would highly recommend this restaurant!!! The only reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because I saw multiple employees not wearing masks. Even the the person who ran our food out to us did not have one, which did make my girlfriend and me a bit uncomfortable. Went here on the Heidi's hotel receptionist recommendation, a local. The outside looks so Apine-ish it's almost tacky, but very well executed! We went after Thanksgiving, so the whole town felt akin a ghost town. There was only one server on the job, a poor high school aged girl and she took care of a busy dining room admirably! So 5 stars for service! The food was "German", and when you order sausage, order the pork based ones. They are tasty if not authentic (who knows, haven't been in Germany yet). This place is packed during peak hours and I am sure it is a mad house. But go when it is off season and during a week night, you will have a very pleasant and enjoyable night. Worst food and services ever. My Kasseler Rippchen was so disappointing. Mash potatoes were cold, pork chops were salty to the point of being inedible. What you see is what was leftover of the ones I got. My hubby couldn't even eat them. The place was dirty but we figured we'd missed a dinner rush and they didn't have time to clean nope, they setup utensils on nasty tables just like they did on ours nor swept a floor. I am now regretting not leaving when I found out there's no soap to wash your hands in the women's bathroom. How & where did my waitress wash her hands when she went. She rolled her eyes when we stated what was wrong with the food and only brought out a nasty replacement pork chop. Nvm my potatoes were still cold. My husband ordered me a hot tea, nvm I never got a water refill. She wasn't nice nor was this pleasant at any point. Well the sauerkraut was good, not great but at least I could eat it. Insult to injury they're only fix was to give 15% off that dish which gave a little over $2,really. My sauerkraut wasn't that good lady. So disgusting, NEVER AGAIN. Don't bother, we weren't alone. Been here twice now, last time service was a little slow and food was a bit over cooked. Not bashing them by any means, less staffing than usual due to it being a slow season and during COVID-19. We've visited this place several times but tonight at the third story bar they over charged both couples over quadruple what our bill should be. We each had a $149 bill for only 2 hours of drinks (beer and white claws only). We argued the bill and at this point we were threatened with the police being called and thrown out of the bar. We asked for an itemized bill and they could not provide us with one and forced to leave and forced to pay the bill. Should have looked at Yelp first! I'm no expert on German food but I know whether something tastes good or not. I ordered the jagerschnitzel. It came out and was 2 pieces about the size of the palm of your hand and about a quarter of an inch thick. It was slightly pan browned but absolutely zero breading. Luckily, I had ordered the mushroom gravy on the side because it was mediocre at best. (Campbell's cream of mushroom soup tastes better!) And while the German potato salad was extremely tasty, it was ice cold like it was straight out of the refrigerator. I ate it thinking that since I have only had German food a few times that maybe I had not had authentic and didn't know what it was really suppose to taste like. Several of the people in my party got knautwurst and said it tasted just like the hotdog my son was having. As we were leaving, curiosity got the best of me. I started looking around and the party beside us had ordered schnitzel also. Hers was breaded and fried golden brown just like I pictured it was suppose to look. I asked our waiter if all their schnitzel was breaded and he said it would have said in the menu. (Not an acceptible answer....know your product!). Then I told him that I thought all schnitzel was the same and that the beginning of the word (weiner, jager, etc) was what type of sauce it was served in. His response was "That's what people keep telling me." I wasn't mad enough at that point so I proceeded to tell him that my potato salad was ice cold. He said, "I could've heated it up for you."
