Caledonia Had breakfast at Caledonia two days in a row! The first day I had the typical country breakfast, scrambled eggs, sausage, grits, and a huge biscuit.. they grill the biscuits so they are really good. So the next day I went back for another breakfast and one of my favorites is an omelette with tomato and either feta or goat cheese and then crumble bacon on the top. They did it with the goat cheese and I must say it was absolutely awesome. I have been to hell in many times, but this is the first time I have been up here to Valhalla to their dining room and it was very impressive. Complimentary valet parking too! read more

The modern American Cuisine certainly a step up from most of the food that you get around the area. The service was excellent, and the entire property was extremely clean with a warm, friendly staff that made us feel right at home. We especially appreciated the pet-friendly accommodations--our room was conveniently located on the lower floor with a lovely patio and walking area, allowing us to avoid the main lobby while still enjoying the beautiful surroundings. We dined at Caledonia twice; while the drinks were great and portions generous, we felt the food lacked in quality and presentation--especially given the higher price point. That said, the overall resort experience more than made up for it. The spa was a real treat, and my husband especially enjoyed the small but well-equipped weight room. Where do I start...while it was super convenient to have an "elevated" dining restaurant a few floors down from our room, it was also a bit pricey and execution was a bit off. The pork chops came out rare. One look and it was clear it wasn't seared completely. Rare pork is not a food adventure I want to partake in. So the pork chop was sent back and chef brought it to temp, but that did not fix the sugary sweet sauce that was too sweet to enjoy. Think brown sugar drizzle for a breakfast dessert level of sweetness. The lamb chops were tasty little things, plenty enough to just have shared this dish between the two of us. read more

Did the Chef's table experience with our friends for their anniversary. The chef did a phenomenal job. Started with the chicken curry soup. It was rich, flavorful and velvety. Next came a refreshing salad with goat cheese, candied pecans and a blackberry vinaigrette. Main courses consisted of filets, horseradish mashed potatoes, and asparagus accompanied by a very delicious, basil heavy tomato sauce. Steaks were cooked perfectly, and the potatoes had just the right amount of horseradish! Last came a chocolate, flourless cake. First, the whole resort seem to be some kind of version of a high-end luxury resort from the perspective of white trash rednecks. It was like a person who hadn't been exposed to anywhere, but a small hometown dreamed up of a place that they would imagine to be a Mecca for white nationalism, and as it turned out, it was just an ode to the mediocrity of the white community that surrounded it. My dining experience at Caledonia was quite disappointing from start to finish. Upon our arrival, the service left much to be desired. The waitress at the stand seemed disinterested and brushed off my attempts to point out our reservation. She even asked for my name again, despite having already been told. This initial encounter set a negative tone. Once seated, we were given a menu for Italian night, which was not what we had expected or hoped for. None of the selections matched what had been posted online. It was disappointing that we weren't informed about other options. I ordered the seafood Cioppino, which was bland, and I had to add an excessive amount of pepper for flavor. Strangely, the pepper was on a nearby empty table, so we had to grab it ourselves. My partner's veal marsala was rubbery and lacked seasoning. It was supposed to come with asparagus but was served with a soggy vegetable mix that seemed overcooked or microwaved from frozen. The Caesar salad was decent, but the rest of the food didn't live up to expectations. The scallops, shrimp, and mussels were overcooked, and the seafood broth didn't taste like lobster or anything seafood-related. The vegetables were undercooked and included crunchy onions and likely canned tomatoes. To make matters worse, Tim, the executive chef visited our table at the end of the meal and instead of taking responsibility, he deflected blame. He told us they struggled to find good help and seemed to dismiss our feedback. He did offer us tiramisu, which I initially declined, but he insisted. The dessert, while initially good, turned confusingly dry and lacked the expected espresso flavor. What added to the disappointment was that I had mentioned my birthday when making the reservation, but it was never acknowledged throughout our visit. This lack of attention to detail added to the overall negative impression. The restaurant's ambience also left much to be desired. The resort seemed to cater to a particular demographic, and it felt like it lacked the sophistication one might expect. So our seats in the wine cave were so nice. We planned this for Debbie's birthday. It was a chefs dinner were the chef would come out and tell you about the course you were having. First off it was not really a 'cave' but a room with a big table and some wine behind a glass wall but it was intimate and cozy once the doors were closed. It was just us so that was nice. Chef Clay Harris came out, introduced himself and let us know how the night would go starting off with the amuse bouche then the following courses. It was really cool and we were looking forward to getting at it! The amuse was a take on his deviled eggs but reduced down to a bite in a spoon. Delicious! We had already had his eggs so we knew this would be good. 1st course was a PB&J that was interesting. The peanut butter powder and jelly were really nice and combined with the brie was a great start. 2nd Course was duck. Cooked just right and delicious. 3rd was a beef tenderloin cooked perfectly but could have been a little warmer. Last was dessert with a pumpkin snickerdoodle. Really nice. Overall we had a great dinner and everything was cooked great but could have been a little warmer and a little more seasoning. Was it up to par with our St. Augustine Chef's table? Honestly no. The Brussels were delish app, we split a salad with goat cheese, we enjoyed the shrimp dish with pasta (flavorful and not That Many shrimp) fresh bread. So after reading reviews we decided to have dinner here tonight. I had booked on open table earlier in the week. It was empty except for a birthday dinner in a private area. Our waiter was William who was absolutely an amazing server. The food however was ok. Nothing that I thought was exceptional. We both ordered a Ceasar salad which was good. I order the goat cheese & tomato sauce. It was tasty. I order a castle rock drink which was nice. My husband ordered the salmon & I had a ribeye. I asked for medium rare. We received our dinner...mine was ok. No taste to the steak. No salt No pepper. Nothing. It was over cooked & the potatoe dish came out lukewarm. I would definitely say that we won't be back. The staff was great The food was not. Sorry to say but I would not recommend the food as 4 star as it has been rated. I believe it's 2 to 3 at most. read more

4 tables in the restaurant, we were table number 2. Waited an hour to even get to order. After this they took our appetizer and entree order. We were still eating appetizers when entree came out. I ordered the ribeye (fyi not a ribeye) my wife ordered the mahi mahi. My steak was over done ( I ordered medium) the cut was tough and dry, I sent it back much to the dislike of the staff. The attitude from their went very downhill, this was our anniversary and substandard food is ok but being pissy about someone complaining that is ridiculous. This is the 2nd time we ate here the 1st time wasn't much better. I do not mind paying $200 for dinner and wine but it should be good and the service should be good too. If you do stay at Valhalla (like we did and did Prosecco, massages, and a package) eat elsewhere, you'll feel better about the whole trip. We ate here with our guests the night before our elopement. Everything was incredible. Service was great, the wine selection has something for everyone and the food was top notch. Our guests were extremely happy and relaxed after a long day of travel. Can't wait to come back and eat here again! List of complaints 1. Rude to us when we had reservations. 2. Staff being unprofessional 3. Witnessed customers turned away when my wife and I were the only people in the restaurant. 4. Food not up to fine dining standards After seeing the reviews I thought I was in for a treat especially since fine dining was was a key word on the review. As my wife and I entered the restaurant we were confused on where to check in especially when the staff is looking at us confused. Once we asked where to check in the bartender or manager yelled out we're not taking walk ins, to which we responded we have reservations. After the confusion was dealt with we were seated across the room in a booth and the only people in the restaurant besides staff. While waiting for our waiter we were amazed to hear the manager and bartenders trash talking customers and other coworkers and not caring that we could hear them even with us sitting on the other side of the dining room. Once our waiter Matt greeted us and started to attend to us he explained that the manager had shoved us on him once he walked though the door even though there were maybe 6 or 7 other people working. Not sure if they were all bartenders or bus boys but they're was staff to handle the restaurant which brings me to more of what we were hearing. After listening to the manager talking very loudly to the staff about how half of the menu was not available and that it was due to one person and that they will not allow walk ins unless Matt our waiter wanted to take walk ins. So is this the new norm of fine dining to not only be super unprofessional but to also try and turn business away especially during Christmas Eve when you are most likely to receive larger tips. Sorry for the rant but my wife and I were so shocked at the way the staff was acting that it took away from everything else. As for the food my wife got a ribeye steak and I the Burger, not what I wanted but the crab cakes were one of the items that weren't available. So the food was ok not fine dining good. My wife's steak tasted as if it had no seasoning at all. The burger was big, but nothing special. After the meal our waiter clearly could tell we were still focusing on the staff behind the bar trash talking everyone and telling each other they weren't going to take walk ins so he brought a sparkler out to try and add some flare to the dinner. If it wasn't for Matt I would've complained to the manager but I don't think that would've helped him or made a difference. Please if you are in the Helen area do yourself a favor drive to Asheville because I don't think fine dining or quality exist in the town. read more

I have mixed feelings about my experience at Caledonia Dining Room @ Valhalla Resort Hotel. We visited with a party of 9. My friend Afua was celebrating her birthday. She made a reservation in advance to accommodate our party. She chose to come here for the beautiful view at the Skybar and closeness to our airBNB. I typically do not have high expectations for hotel restaurant food. You know that it will likely be pricey and underwhelming. In this case, this proved to be untrue regarding price, but true with the food and service. Our waitress and bartender Jessica was extremely accommodating and pleasant despite of many mishaps. I don't want to say that the mishaps were a result of racism, but in some ways we felt mistreated. It was an odd experience. The table was ready for us when we arrived. Jessica was the only one servicing the area and there were three couples seated around the same time that we were seated. One couple sat at the bar and the others were seated in the dining area near the railing, closest to the view. We were in the center of the upstairs area. Jessica started us off with the drink menu. We ordered a few martinis and Whiskey Sours. It took about 10 minutes to get drink orders to the table. When the drinks were brought out, Afua's sister's 7-month-old baby fell back in the highchair. He was startled and unharmed, but there was no attention from staff or bystanders when this happened. Also, right before that, a guest at the bar almost knocked a chair over into her baby. Our waitress caught it, but this was still frustrating. We were offered two food menus. The downstairs menu and the dinner menu. The downstairs menu was less pricey and had a few appetizers, sandwiches, soups and salads. The dinner menu had duck, salmon and a few other entrees. Apparently, this menu changes periodically. Five of us ordered a chicken bacon cheddar sandwich with varying condiments and topping requests (i.e omit tomatoes, add sautéed onion, add a side of chipotle sauce etc.). One person ordered a Vahalla classic burger. I ordered a salad and one of the chicken bacon cheddar sandwiches. Afua's sister ordered the soup of the day with the duck breast entree. Afua and her younger sister ordered the salmon entrée. We assumed that the soup and salad would come out as starters, but they did not. We waited for over an hour for the food. At the hour mark, Jessica advised us that the food would be up shortly. At that point, I asked Jessica if the side items (fries and onion rings) would be hot. I asked because I know that chefs often serve large parties simultaneously. With that being said, salmon and fresh vegetable entrées can sit in a window longer than sandwiches with fries before getting cold. Jessica assured me that they should be and if not, they'd take care of it. When the food finally came out, all 5 chicken bacon cheddar sandwiches were missing bacon. All orders of fries/onion rings were cold. None of the starters (soup or salad) were brought out and we ended up cancelling them. The birthday girl felt that her food was bland. Jessica worked with the chef to get the issues resolved, but it put a damper on the experience. The best part of the night was when Jessica brought out a dessert to celebrate the birthday girl. Afua's sister requested this cake in advance but had to leave dinner early to head back to Atlanta. I followed up with our waitress and she made it happen right after I had each friend share a special memory with the birthday girl. The ambiance was there, and the food was good after correction. However, the mishaps and wait for food made this run less smoothly than intended. I would not recommend the upstairs Caledonia Dining Room for a large party, but I would for a romantic date. The scenery was beautiful as the sunset and the little light accents were a nice touch. read more

If you are in the mood for a great, away from the normal boring QSR breakfast places, try Caledonia. This place is awesome and will become your favorite place for breakfast and possibly dinner. The chef and staff are spot on. Atmosphere is amazing. The food is quality. In fact, the omelet with peppers, sausage, bacon and the secret, Gouda cheese will knock your socks off. Might be the best omelet I have had in 30 years. Even though this is an adult only boutique hotel, children are welcomed for lunch and dinner. Check it out, you will not be disappointed. We were looking for a good restaurant and this one sounded promising. Well, promises are all this restaurant has. It advertised vegetarian options (there were none), local food (the dish called "Georgia trout" on the menu used trout from North Carolina), and my favorite: there was no Kale in the kale salad. Which is fine, I get it, if you're trying to serve local food and the kale is out of season. But be honest upfront when someone orders it, give them a heads up. In short: they have a good concept, now they just need to make it happen. As soon as I walked into the restaurant we were greeted. After reading the reviews I was looking forward to our dining experience. I had reviewed the menu beforehand and knew what I wanted for dinner but when ordering I found out they were out of the dish I wanted. I was very disappointed and surprised because we had early dinner reservations and was the first to be seated in the dining room. How do you run out of tortellini? Another table requested the same dish and was told they were out of it also. When I ordered the tortellini dish the server told me they only had 1 plate left of the dish again surprised because we were the only ones seated in the restaurant at the time we ordered. I ordered the tortellini pasta right away. Then he came back out to our table and said they were out of it so I had to look at the menu again to figure out what I wanted. I asked the server can the kitchen make the same dish with pasta noodles since you guys "ran out of the tortellini". The server asked the kitchen and they said they would. The kitchen should have offered an alternative since they ran out of tortellini instead of the customer coming up with ideas or just make a quick batch of tortellini. When the pasta dish came out it was nothing like the description of the tortellini dish even with different vegetables and the flavor profile was not good. It was way over seasoned and I could only eat 2 bites and I sent the dish back. I was asked if I wanted to order something else and there I was again looking at the menu again. I ended up ordering filet which I thought would be a safe bet. The problem was my husband had finished his meal by the time I got mine and I would have liked to enjoy my meal with my husband since we were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary. I was surprised that they didn't do anything for celebrations especially for a 10 year wedding anniversary. I had put the comments in our open table reservations but I had to say something to the server we were celebrating our 10 year anniversary. My husband ordered the Cesar salad and the ribeye. I ended up getting the filet. Both steaks were cooked great and I enjoyed the parsnip purée and tomato jam. The service was excellent. When the dessert menu came they were out of the lime tart which was going to be another pick of mine. I was striking out. The server ended up bringing 2 macaroons to the table. The macaroons were ok and I am assuming was left over from brunch since it was not listed on the dessert menu. The food was good but to be fair we went to an excellent farm to table restaurant the night before in the local area and it was fantastic. I guess I expected more from the chef from this restaurant but again to be fair I just came from a meal that was out of this world awesome. The menu is pricey and 20 percent gratuity is added to your bill. I just wish they didn't run out of food especially at the beginning of dinner service. I probably will not be back because I don't want to be disappointed again. There are many other choices in the surrounding area that are much better. Chef came out to the table to check on us, and it was quickly evident that a great deal of care went into every dish.
