I came in today to restock one of my go to tinctures. I have never been to their brick and mortar until today and I love it! I've been to their website in the past which is good, but now that I have seen inside of their physical location I am never going back! They have been in their spot for 38 years (says on the inside of the door). I was helped by a very nice lady who not only recommended a tincture I'm eager to try, but gave good, in depth explanations of the tinctures I was looking for. Specifically I was there for tinctures related to my menstrual cycle. I like their PMS tincture-it has helped make a difference (especially reducing cramps). There were so many tinctures for so many other things! Their organization was outstanding. Without help I found my product in seconds, but appreciated the explanation (which I asked for). The art that they feature on their bottles is both functional (color coded) and beautiful. I enjoyed looking around, and had some of their tea samples to sip and wander around with. I picked up a mushroom tincture as a bonus. They have a wall of teas in addition to their tinctures, and gifts-both of their wares and the art of locals. I can't come back soon enough! read more

It has been a long time since I stepped into The Herbalist in Seattle's Ravenna neighborhood (my former apartment was half a block away 15 1/2 years ago!) The Herbalist has been around since 1984, their other site is on 15th Ave E on Capitol Hill. This was my go to place when a former co-worker in the late 1990s introduced me to Ayurveda, aromatherapy, and making chai from scratch. I revisited The Herbalist to complement my recent interests in sennin-so shiatsu and my two visits to a nutritional therapy consultant discussing aromatherapy, reiki, and homeopathic remedies with whole foods. Usually when I'm in the neighborhood, it's closed for the day. I was finally able to stop in yesterday (11/18/17) before having dinner at JuneBaby. I briefly looked around and then experienced customer service at its best with the store associate steering me in the right direction after my inquiry about lavender essential oils. I was shown three items to choose from and even provided a photocopy of an informative sheet of its uses and other essential oils. Yes, one can wander the natural foods and supplements aisle at Whole Foods, Central Market or PCC. But by visiting The Herbalist in person, they have staff present that are helpful and knowledgeable, especially for the novice, the curious, or the clueless like me. read more

I'm sorry to say, that the days of brick-and-mortar are over. The Herbalist has an excellent selection of just about any kind of herb that you could want, but at two to four times what they are selling for on the Internet. Add another ten percent and you're completely out of the ball park. I know they don't want to hear it, and they have bills to pay just like everyone else, but given the accessibility now in 2018, any herb imaginable is available on the Internet for free shipping (usually) and no tax, with the exception of Amazon. Price is everything. Quality is also important, but the same quality herbs can be found from hundreds of sellers on other Internet stores. I went in here for the last time, and just could not believe the prices. But if you are well off and don't mind supporting the local stores and pay more than you must, then I'm sure they won't mind. But for now, I have to stay on a budget. I also found the last batch of herbs I purchased here were very high in alcohol content, and seemed to be lacking the efficacy before. I have not noticed any differences in my mental or physical well being if I do or do not take them, so I'm led to believe the herbs in a bottle really didn't do anything to help. read more

I'm giving this place 1 star based off the bad customer service my husband & I received. There's an Asian lady that works here that were giving my husband & I bad looks thinking we didn't deserve to be there. We are a colored couple that took interest in the store while walking so we decided to check the place out along with our 5 month baby. I don't understand what her problem was, if she either having a bad day or she's suspicious about black folks. Great selections but horrible customer service. While I have little doubt that they are a knowledgeable and friendly team to some, their customer service skills leave something more than a little to be desired. Briefly: walked in to solicit some advice and was prepared to purchase. A lazy and slow Saturday afternoon, their was one assistant in there, talking to one lone customer. The assistant did not acknowledge my entry into the store and continued to be talked at by the other customer. OK, fine. I'll browse, there's no-one else here to obstruct my view of any of the items, I thought. 5 minutes passes, the phone goes, the assistant ceases conversation and answers the phone, puts the phone down and then moves over to the other side of the store where the other customer had now moved to, still unwilling to acknowledge my presence. I wait some more, looking at some of the bottles on the shelves...and wait...and wait... I want some advice but I am not going to interrupt the "meaningful" dialogue between these two. Eventually, I put a bottle I had in my hand back on the shelf and walked out. The assistant now turns and says, "Sorry, I was talking..." I didn't hear the rest of her apology, as I was already out of the door. Customer service rule number 1. Even if you've engaged with one customer, when another walks in, at the very least, look at them and nod or smile, just to let them know you're busy and you'll be with them as soon as possible. Both people knew I was there but patently the stream of consciousness from the solo customer was way more entrancing than even looking to see if I needed help. But then again, the phone call obviously mattered... Suffice to say I was quite prepared a not-inconsiderable sum and be a repeat customer. Not any more. You had your chance and you blew it. read more

After a week long binge of random meals, drinking, and late nights stress had finally began to show itself in fatigue and the pores of my face. The Herbalist proves to be a fantastic resource in organic herbs, ingredients, teas, oils, and a huge selection of kits designated for every issue of the body. There is even a mini juice/tea bar inside should you be craving to flush some toxins out early. I was able to pick up my green clay for my face to soak up all the toxins. Very Knowledgeable place if you don't know exactly what your looking for - the brochures/kits will break it all down for you. This place isn't cheap either - expect to drop upwards of $65+ for the herbal kits, and the bulk items can add up fast as well. Anytime I'm anywhere in the University area, I stop by the Herbalist and grab a Choco-Maca shake. It's literally the tastiest "best for me" shake I've ever had. Honestly I think most of the tinctures and herbs they sell in these stores provide false hope, but the shakes are amazing. read more

Great products, but bad service. The first time I went to the store, I was completely ignored. The lone sales lady was talking to another lady. I waited for 10 minutes, until another customer walked in. The sales lady acknowledged the other customer, and said 'I will be with you shortly'. I walked up to the sales person, again, she completely ignored me. I am beginning to think I was wearing an invisible coat. After another 5 minutes, I left. I drove all the way from the eastside to buy some items, and I had a car load of people waiting for me. Off track...The best thing that came out of this was discovering Herban Wellness, the best herbal shop where the owner Katya is super friendly and helpful, and her lovely dog, Abbey. I always look forward to going to Herban Wellness. It has been about 3 years since I been there. The only reason why I ventured back is to use some groupon deals. The sales person was ringing my items in, and was interrupted by another customer who wanted to buy an item. The sales person rings in her item with mine, so you can imagine my surprise when I left the store with tea at almost $100. I was still in shock as I walked back to the car. The sales person approaches me as I was getting into the car, to let me know the mistake, and we went back to rectify the transaction. Good hindsight on her part. I just stopped in this place for the first time to get a gift for my sister and let me tell you, it's awesome! I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed assistance with anything. I spent probably 15 minutes talking with the gal at the counter to make the right selections. She was super warm and informative, and specially gift wrapped my purchase for me. They have such a wide selection here. Every time I've been here it has been a pleasant experience. It's been the same lady working the past few times I've been in. She was very knowledgeable about different herbs and was very personable. A warning to asthmatics - this place reeks of "aromatherapy" incense. And I do mean, "reeks!" For a place ostensibly promoting a natural, healthy lifestyle this is a real contradiction. I can't even send my husband inside. His clothes smell so bad when he gets out, we have to open the car windows and I must use the inhaler. They refuse to be sensitive to all of us whose brochial tubes close up when assaulted in such fashion. So goodbye to them (used to use them all the time.) When I was in here I was only looking for the fluted Indian vessel you use to pour warm water through your nose, which isn't exactly an herb. All I can say is that they had a chunky plastic Norwegian version of the traditional neti pot I was looking for. And that was good enough for me. read more

I was in Seattle for a few days recently and had a flare up of a chronic condition. They had the herbs I needed and the staff offered several approaches. The tincture mixtures I bought helped immediately and within two days I was back to normal; their formulas worked better than what I had been using. They also have a great selection of mushroom products. And some nice lifestyle offerings like soap and makeup, got my sister a birthday present. I was in pain. Having crawled out of a sick bed to restock my pain remedy, I found myself on their doorstep with the door locked. Checking my watch, I found it was exactly 6:00. Their sign said they closed at 6:00. I had not known that. I knew exactly what I wanted and could have paid cash, a quick transaction, but the merchant just shook her head and then ignored me. I went back home to bed, used a different pain med to get me through the night. It left me sleeping until almost 5:00P, today. Finally, I could stay awake to call other places. PCC carries some of their remedies + a very good selection of an organic competitor. So does Whole Foods. Both carry them for less cost than in the Herbalist store. My low rating is solely on compassion and price. I've dealt with them in the past. I cannot fault their knowledge or products. read more

The staff have always been extremely knowledgable and helpful and I always walk away feeling like I've learned some great new things. Super helpful staff. Last few times I have come in they know exactly what I need for natural relief from body pain. I brought my sons mother in here when she was 2 weeks late to deliver our son. The kind staff provided her a bunch of helpful natural remedies for inducing the pregnancy and to help with the painful process. Today I have 20month old happy healthy son.
