Katsu is one of the finest fried items known to humankind, and even though eating fried food makes me feel like I've been punched in the stomach recently, I was willing to take a rocket to the gut for some stellar katsu and fries. Daruma has the set up of a no-frills establishment that knows they're going to be churning out orders. The kiosk order system isn't that common in the US because it seems ridiculously unfriendly, but Japan is about efficiency with a focus on the food. They only had two people working here so it was slow, but absolutely worth it. The spicy chicken katsu was incredible. Everything that was on this sandwich had a reason for being there. The cutlet itself was incredibly juicy and crispy. The right amount of sauce was applied so as to not make the sandwich itself soggy (critical on a sandwich with fried elements), and then the cabbage on top gives it a bit of freshness. I'm pretty sure the bread was fine, but that isn't why we're here. It's a vessel for fried food. The fries seem to need a bit of work. I think they may have gotten soggy because they came in a to-go box, but the seasoning was fantastic. They also come with whatever sauce you want, and there is a plethora to choose from. I thoroughly enjoyed the spicy mayo, which I then added to the katsu sando as well. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the Fremont area.

Jalapeño Business (4/5): I liked how unique this bowl was. The pickled red onions add the acidity, while the black beans, chicken, and jasmine rice provide the body to make this bowl quite filling. The potatoes recipe need to be completely refined, or they need to offer a substitution option for them. They are overly soft and they don't have nearly enough seasoning. That was the only thing that remained on my plate when I was done! and the soft boiled egg tasted a little off to me, like it had been sitting for a bit long. Other than that, the Turkish eggs and chopped chicken salad were very fresh and good. Staff were super nice when ordering at the counter, coffees and pastries were good as well. Overall I will come back here, just would like to see some quality changes with the Mr Breakfast as it used to be very good.

But what I saw today "behind the scenes" makes me afraid to come back again: they're inserting the take-out receipts directly into the food bowls while making our meals. These types of receipts usually contain chemicals like BPA, which are known to be harmful to human health. In the EU, there's an outright ban on BPA in food contact materials. I am unlikely to return to Sweetgreen after today.
