This is such a cute little cool bar. Wonderful outdoor smoking space which is almost as big as the interior. The bartenders are friendly and can make almost anything. There's no food but you can down the block and find some tasty food carts. You can even bring the food back to the bar. Only negative is there's only one bathroom and with all the beer floating around there was a line most of the time. read more

The High Dive has become my official go to spot for Blazer games and casual meet-ups with friends. I'm so thankful to have found this gem of a bar. The bartenders are all hilarious, friendly and I hope this is okay to say, but also good looking to boot! It's the perfect size, never gets annoyingly crowded where you have to wait for a drink. They have an outdoor area and they let you bring in food from outside vendors. It's laid back, clean and comfortable. All my thumbs are up. read more

I wish I could give no stars to this place but I have to give one in order to leave a review . Me and my friends were visiting Portland from Los Angeles for my birthday weekend . We randomly found this place when searching google and yelp so thought we'd stop by for a quick round . This was on Saturday 12/7 .There were about 10 of us in the group . When we walked in this place , it was around 6PM , it was pretty empty still . Lauren was our bartender and she tended to us . I wish we didn't tip her , she deserves nothing. She's rude and unprofessional and in my opinion trashy . We were there for about an hour and a half . There was a lot of us so yes we all used the restroom frequently. When we were about to leave , I was waiting for the bathroom . It's located right by the bar and there is only was bathroom . She passed by and looked annoyed , I automatically thought she was over us and something was bugging her . She looked pissed off. That was strike 1. Then my cousin had his eyes closed and was kind of leaning his head on the seat and she passed by and aggressively told him he can't do that or he would have to go . It was supper rude. Strike 2 ! And yah I agree that's not cool to sleep at a bar but he was just closing his eyes. Then as we are leaving , she comes out and literally tells our group off . She told us that we clogged up her toilet with paper towels and that creates plumbing issues . And cursed and muttered other words under her breathe . Mind you , there isn't any trash cans or seat covers in there . There could have been different ways to say this . I am not sure who in the group was doing this or if someone else in the bar was responsible but to target us that way was disgusting . I didn't hold my breath and exchange some disgusting words and she deserved all of that . So Lauren if you read this ,change your attitude sweety . It ain't that serious... Based strictly on the ability to go from sober to drunk in very few drinks this bar is a solid 5 star! Friendly and attentive staff despite the drunken clientele. I like that you can order food from the pod next door. It's easy to make everyone happy with that many food choices. I can't call this place a dive. There is just way too much energy in here for that. It's also way too clean and the well liquor doesn't taste like a science experiment. read more

I've been very disappointed by the rum selection in Portland (maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?), but High Dive carries Flor de Caña! Whoop! Whoop! I appreciate that while we were here one of the bartenders kicked a guy out (as in physically removed him) for ashing in a woman's food and making lewd comments at her. However, the service was pretty terrible and the bartender looked at me like I was an alien when I asked for a cocktail (even though they advertise themselves as a cocktail bar on their signs...). Probably a good place to crash and get a single beer with your food cart food, but nothing more than this. read more

I want to preface this review with an acknowledgment of JW's original review. however, the quadrant is incorrect on the business listing, and even though i personally love a quiet bar, that is typically not the goal of a purveyor. and i really, really want this place to stick. if you've wandered around cartopia, you are probably familiar with the jolly roger, and que pasa cantina, and the little bit of nothing that had been nestled in between them for some time now. that bit of "not much" has turned into (through hard work; just check out the facebook page) a beautiful bar back and a dimly lit, comfortable lounge. the tap list is not to be scoffed at, but i think what this neighborhood has been missing most is a cocktail connoisseur. after being served a damn fine old fashioned tonight, i am not afraid to say that i have very high hopes for the high dive. in fact, the only reason i'm leaving a star up for grabs is that i'm waiting for the house cocktail list, which i look forward to falling in love with. check it out. read more

8:10 pm on a Friday night. 20% capacity, Which is OK, since I'm not looking for a crowded place. Signs outside prominently state "cocktails." I'm thinking this place knows cocktails. Allows food cart food at the bar from next-door. Dark bar. Interesting selection of beers on chalkboard, including a known, award-winning beer from Montana. I observe. Frozen margarita slush machine...Not a good sign. Looks like a dive bar, but the name is ironic. High dive? Probably so because the bartender knows her cocktails. Do you have Luxardo, I ask? Yes, she says. How about Rye, sweet vermouth, and Luxardo? Not on the cocktail menu, but she knows. (A "Brooklyn," I say to myself. Will she get it right?) She mixes. I ask, and she hands me a little bottle of orange bitters, for 5 dashes. Completion. Perfect. I like this place. Lots of locals come by. Neighborhood bar feel. Nice. read more

Love. this. place. They played great music, they have cheesy southern names for their drinks (which I like being from the south), and it is intimate. I just like the vibe of this place. It was semi-busy on a Saturday night, and I sat at the bar. I got great service from two different bartenders. I ordered the boot strap which was delicious and not too sweet. I am not a fan of super sugary drinks and I liked the tart from the grapefruit juice. She also made a decent margarita, which I was not expecting. They let us bring in food from Cartopia next door, which was cool. The only thing I don't like about this place is that I don't like that the patio is full of people smoking. I wish there was a way to either turn the music down a little bit so that I could've enjoyed my time inside more. I'm sure on a weeknight it isn't as loud. I have only been to The High Dive a few times, but I like it so far. There happy hour is pretty good $3 wells and micro brews. They also have SIN everyday, which is a dollar off call drinks. I like their front, heated patio area. It's good for people watching and the inside is bare and rustic, and I like that feel too. The bartender the last time I went was really friendly and chatted with me for a bit. I like how they let you bring in food from the food carts next door, since they don't offer much in the way of their own food. It's just down the street from me, so a good place to grab a quick drink and unwind. read more

I hate getting off work at 5 and rushing across town to make it to happy hour before it ends at 6. High Dive understands people like me, which is why theirs ends at 7. $3 pints, $3 wells, $4 glasses of wine, and $1 jell-o shots. Yes, jell-o shots, don't try to pretend like you're above them! There's also nachos, chili dogs and other similar munchies in the $2-$3 range. High Dive's patio is the perfect place to sit for a couple hours. They even show films out there (double features!) during the spring and summer. They have a margarita machine. It's incredible. One of the best margarita's I've had. Two microbrews, three jell-o shots and two margaritas only set me back $21 (!!!) and left me happily stumbling into Cartopia next door. read more

It's usually after work that I roll into the High Dive. Teddy, Mo, and Nicole always have a smile for me and I've come to love this little neighborhood bar so much. It's amazing how many of the regular patrons are in the service industry. That fact alone should speak volumes. Lots of personality here. Lots of fantastic conversation. The encouragement to bring in food cart food is great. I love the location, the outside seating is obviously a huge plus even in the winter because the patio is heated and the decor is great. The music playing was a fantastic mix and the people that were there were low key, not obnoxious and an all around good mixture of like minded individuals who just wanted a chill relaxing place to have a beer, a bite to eat (from the food carts) i noticed. Altough the bar does serve like 5 food items. Don't expect much for service though. It's nothing to get excited about. read more

There is one great bartender at this place. All the other bartenders have serious attitude problems (the woman and the guy with the slick hair and Russian doll tattoos). When we went they refused to come over and take our order at the table like our favorite bartender does and then the guy took the ten minutes to make three drinks even though no one else ordered drinks during that time. Both bartenders that night gave us serious attitude anytime we asked anything. They seemed generally uninterested in doing their jobs. From now on I will be checking who the bartender is. If it's not the good bartender (kinda of short, wears a hat all the time, endearingly goofy) I'm leaving. read more

I've been going here since it opened it's doors. My all time favorite local dive. It's my last stop before walking home to my Hawthorne Apartment. I was in search of a neighborhood bar right on 12th, 11th, Hawthorne ish on Saturday night. It was too loud with a crappy band at Langano Lounge. I hate Tennessee Reds and their cold atmosphere. Jolly Roger smells like a toenail soaking in the spillage of a meek beer and the guys shamlessly hound the girls. But it was a bit too cold to really walk much further than that half mile radius. I knew the High Dive existed, but am rarely in its vicinity. Opportunity! Engage! It still smells new in here. In a good way. It's warm, wood walls made me feel like I was in a well behaved, temperate sauna. The liquor selection was clearly well thought thru. And the bartender was so awesome! In a bar that is fairly small, in a town full of drinkers, it's so important that the bartender sets the mood. He politely explained their policy on food with the food carts when he thought we mentioned food. He poured a great drink. We sat outside at their picnic tables and every time I went in he made amusing conversation that never got awkward or intrusive. Well played, Sir. He was great.
