For the second time in the same week I've been sat down, given a drink and no one bothered to take my order in a reasonable time and I've gotten up and left. The food is great but the service is hit or miss and mostly miss, and often rude. It's a common theme there. There's something extremely welcoming and dear to my heart about a classic breakfast diner. Good service, and a very homey feel to the atmosphere. Our food came out quickly and it was hot and met our expectations. A nice little gem nestled right near downtown Mount Dora, The Highland St Cafe serves up offerings of huge pancakes, yummy omelettes, trash plates, breakfast sandwiches, and all the trimmings (grits, hash browns), etc. Although I didn't ask, I'm almost positive their whipped cream is home made and so so good. I would recommend getting in on everything you possible can (hot chocolate, pancakes, just a big bowl of it to eat with a spoon, etc.) Also, If you like grits, THIS IS YOUR PLACE. I have never tried a better bowl of grits, and I am a grits aficionado. I usually have to douse mine in salt, though, but these come out to your table already perfectly tasty and creamy. My only qualm about my whole experience was the filling used for my Greek omelette. The tomato, olive, spinach mix was not the best due to the lack of any seasoning and dicieness of the tomatoes. It was still fresh, and hot, though, so I can't really complain TOO much. Overall, would recommend! Will return again! PSA: Open every day of the year, sans Thanksgiving and Christmas! read more

Stick to a very standard American breakfast and you'll eat well. Vary the slightest bit (Mexican, biscuits (yes biscuits), or "creative" dishes) and you may not. The kitchen does a good job. It is served with pork sausage in the gravy so beware of that. I ordered the sirloin steak and eggs with grits. Grits and eggs were good and creamy. Our first visit Mt. Dora included a visit to this cafe based off of two things...the high Yelp rating and the one parking spot that was left! The banner out front says you can get breakfast all day, so for "lunch" I ordered 2 large pancakes and some bacon. The bacon had the perfect crispness, with a little smoke flavor. The pancakes were huge!!! I should have ordered just one. Also perfectly cooked, they were light, fluffy (a little cake mix perhaps?) and almost fell apart after putting on butter and syrup. The dining area is small and reminds you of being at someone's home. The staff were attentive and friendly. We'll probably be back the next time we're in the area. read more

I haven't loved everything I've tried though, so if you find a favorite, stick to it. It's all been good,,, but some things are better than others. This is a charming diner with reasonable prices and very good service. It was busy, as any good place should be. It's a snug dining area, but that is part of the charm. If you're coming with a group larger than 6-8, there are probably other places that would fit better. The coffee and hot chocolate were good, as expected. It's a diner, so it's worth remembering that this isn't bistro coffee. But that's what I grew up on, so it's fine with me. The Spanish Trash Plate with chorizo sausage was tasty. Judging from the way the kids finished the pancakes, they were not disappointed. We will likely return on a future visit to Mt Dora. read more

I should preface this review with that I did not have too much of their food during this visit. This was right after the Mount Dora half marathon which was needless to say very hilly and rainy and windy so my stomach wasn't the best in the world haha The only food I tried during this visit was a few slices of rye toast, which was very good by the way. I also stole some potatoes off of my friends egg Florentine. Those are also incredibly good even with an upset stomach. What does review is very much about though is the level of service I received. Everyone was incredibly accommodating and very sweet to me. At one point I asked for Ginger ale to find something to better my stomach. They did not have any bites knowing how I was feeling they brought me a Sprite. As my friend and I were leaving, I said to her we definitely have to come back and get an actual branch here. I love how the place is decorated and to my surprise I learned that it's actually the oldest restaurant in Mount Dora. I've passed this place a lot on my way into town and after taking to Yelp I decided it was time for a visit. My husband and I came for lunch. The place is very cozy and the owner obviously loves Scottish terriers since most of the dog decor is of scottie's. Anyways, to the food. I was torn between a few lunch menu items and our waitress helped me decide between two of them. I ended up getting the club sandwich. First off let me say that when it comes to my bread being toasted I like it toasted lightly. Most places burn the toast when it comes to club sandwiches even after I tell them I want it lightly toasted but not this place. They got it perfect! The sandwich was big and filling. My husband got the meatloaf which was on special. Now, I am not a fan of meatloaf but this meatloaf. Well, it's in a class of its own. I tried a bite of it and my mind was blown. Not only was the flavor amazing but...there was cheese! Yes, cheese! I've never had a meatloaf with cheese before and I'm pretty sure after today I will never have it without it again. Looked up this breakfast cafe while in Mount Dora and decided to give it a try. Very busy, so one would think this is a good place to eat. Not really. Ordered the 2-2-1 which consisted of 2 bacon, 2 eggs, and 1 pancake. The eggs did not look like there were two of them. More like 1. The pancake stuck to the plate and was inedible. When checking out, I let the host know about this issue as the server never returned to our table. He stated that he saw that and was taking it off my bill. Well if you saw it, why didn't you come by and fix it! Ridiculous. There are much better cafes in Mount Dora. Skip this one. read more
