Joshua and Kim are awesome. They served up notch service with a smile. There isn't a lot of parking available but we were able to find a spot on the side of the building. The restaurant was not too busy when we got there. Our friends were already seated and waiting for us. There had ordered water for the table and had their coffees. Joshua appeared shortly after we exchanged pleasantries with our group. He checked in and we ordered coffee as well. He returned with the coffee and took all our orders. Two of our friends frequent the cafe weekly so he already knew what they wanted. The rest of us were able to order. We received our food in a reasonable time. Joshua and Kim checked in periodically to make sure we didn't need anything and kept the coffee flowing. I had the Pot Roast Omelette with Home Fries and a Biscuit. It was ok. Everyone else enjoyed their food. I would recommend the cafe adding fresh fruits to the menu. By the time we got ready to leave, there was a line of people waiting to be seated. This diner is what you think of when they say small town diner if you're looking for our ambience or something romantic or even a chain this is not the place but if you're looking for great staff, amazing service delicious food portions that are shareable and an overall down home feel that also hint a bit of nostalgia than this is the place. My party of six met up here on a Sunday for brunch and we all enjoyed our food. The service was quick. The staff as well as the customers were friendly. We also took to go bags and had a great time. I will definitely come back here again and I suggest you do the same. We stop here every time we are in Mount Dora. I was a little concerned when their website said they were under new ownership, but it was great! The decor is so cozy and fun, lots of Scotty dog pictures from the early 1900's around. My husband had a HUGE pecan pancake and I had the grilled cheese sandwich with Cole slaw. Everything was perfect. Our server was attentive and friendly. The cashier was outgoing and smiley. I think it was the new owner checking to make sure everything was going well in the dining room and he gave us a big smile as we left. We'll be back next time we're in town! read more

As a new resident of Mount Dora, I doubt I could have picked a better place to enjoy my birthday breakfast than the charming Highland St. Cafe. This unassuming eatery is open daily from 7a-2p and what they lack in fancified fusion they more than make up for in good home cooking done right and in decent portions. Today I enjoyed the best French Toast I've had in years. Delicious! I'm coming back for the apple pancakes for sure! The servers were very sweet and folks around here know a good thing when they see it because there were plenty of patrons here to get their grub on. Awesome little breakfast spot! The cook is a master of eggs, the over hard broken were textbook! I was here 2 days in a row on a recent trip to Mt Dora for work. Their breakfast helped me power through a 9 hour install with no breaks! The "trash plates" have a weird name but they are delicious! I had the Spanish version that had eggs, chorizo sausage, cheese, and hash browns all mixed together in a delicious pile! Just the right amount of food with an English muffin. Next day I had the French toast combo with perfectly cooked eggs and sausage patties. The patties had a satisfying crunchy skin, they were yummy! First time customer at this local spot. It is located in the middle of a residential area. The parking is limited and we had to park on the street in front of a house. There were a lot of people waiting outside. We were a party of 2 and got seated immediately. The owner must love schnauzers because they are the decor throughout beginning with the stained glass on the front door. The place was packed on a Saturday morning. The staff are friendly, attentive and running around helping everyone. We ordered the Strawberry stuffed French toast $10..99 because of reviews I read. It did not disappoint! It is named highland st cafe, so wasn't expecting too big, and it was rather small but the staff was friendly. Someone loves Scottish terriers and that is cute, not a typical deco theme. The prices were.a little higher than other places we have been to that are similar but not horrible. 2 plates and 2 drinks ~ $35. I was happy to see stuffed French toast on the menu but what i got was like carnival/fair food. It was good but very sweet and greasy. It is stuffed French toast, then battered and deep fried, then they cover that with a strawberry topping and whipped cream. However, the strawberry topping is more like a pie filling instead of a fresh strawberries type. My husband ordered a regular lunch plate and one of his sides was corn nuggets, which is not something you see very often, but when they came to the table, they were also covered with powdered sugar. Also seems a little more like fair flare. The other thing that seemed a little odd about this "mom and Pop" style eating place, was that they really didn't offer too many "healthy " veggies. If you go to a place that just deals with breakfast, and breakfast alone, it should be amazing right? In other words they have perfected their craft. Judging by how busy the place was, I would say customers agree. I ordered a hot chocolate - it was not the best as somewhat watery. I ordered the pancake, two bacon strips and two eggs - everything was perfection. My husband ordered the main breakfast with bacon, eggs, biscuits with the gravy poured on top (may I make a suggestion? - not everyone wants it like this, for me - I want my biscuits firm, not covered in sauce and not soggy. I like to put butter and jam on them for example! and dip into the sauces, gravy when I want to). He also had the home fries - which were a bit burnt and over salty. However this place is a gem - and if I lived in Mount Dora it would surely be a regular spot for me. Then I could say ease up on the salt on the fries, and don't pour sauce on my biscuits. My review is four and a half stars, but yelp does not allow this, and as this is a mom n pop place and not a chain, I support them, therefore 5! We were seated immediately and asked for drink orders. Menu is large and lots of options. Once we ordered, food took maybe 10-15 minutes max to get out. I got the southern eggs Benedict and my hubby got the big breakfast. Well they were huge portions- definitely get your money's worth! Food was delicious. We both brought some biscuits and gravy home. We just drove up to pick up a car, and needed a cousy friendly place to eat, talk and enjoy some time before we hit back the road. The coffee was perfect, freshly brewed. So may choices for breakfast and lunch available at any time. They have a choice for vegetarians, which to me is always a plus. Had my black coffee, sweet potato fries on a perfect fresh portion. It was a Saturday afternoon, around noon when we came, and now instead of enjoying my time off, here I am writing this review. I'd rather be doing anything else, believe me.I had high hopes when I chose this place for breakfast with my aunt who came all the way from New York. But boy, was I wrong. The wait for our meals stretched over 45 minutes despite the thinning crowd. When our plates finally arrived, they bore the hallmark of neglect: cold pancakes, overcooked bacon, and a conspicuous absence of attentive service. No one ever bothered to check on us. I had to get up to ask for basic things like hot sauce and takeout boxes. The bill was steep for what we got, I honestly would rather eat gas station sushi then return here. As we left, I couldn't help but notice neglected bacon in the kitchen, now I know where the bad bacon came from. It's just not worth it. So...the service is horrible. We finally sat down and were sitting for almost 10 minutes before anyone even spoke with us. And there was one other table with people. When the server came her mask should have been recalled by the maker. Didn't even cover her nose. It was also very hot and the server was sweating all over the place. She finally got our drinks then came back to take our orders. There were seven of us. Four ordered omelettes with Swiss cheese. When we finally got our food, three of us were pleased. The other four who got the Swiss cheese omelettes got an omelette with a slice of American cheese melted (almost) on top. My husband and I were in Mount Dora and wanted to grab breakfast so we went here since it was one of the highest rated breakfast places. After eating there, I understand why! When we arrived on a Saturday around 10am, there was a considerable crowd waiting to be seated and I was a little worried it would be a long wait. The decor was simple, the tables and chairs "well-loved" so don't worry about dressing casual here. The keep the creamers and butter pats on the table in styrofoam bowls so like I said, definitely not hipster atmosphere so don't expect that. The menu was basic, but had some items that were a little unique. There's pretty much something for just about anyone. I ordered the Florentine Eggs Benedict, which was delicious. I pretty much stick to a keto diet, but I forgot to ask them to leave out the english muffin so I just didn't eat it. There was a good amount of spinach, unless some places that make a "Florentine style" dish where you only get one or two spinach leaves. LOL But the star of this dish was the Hollandaise sauce - to DIE FOR!!! I could've just eaten a bowl of it! I had mine with a side of tomatoes and all I can say about that is they were some of the best tomatoes I'd ever had! They tasted home grown and were so sweet. I also ordered a side of bacon which was served perfectly crispy! Speaking of keto/low carb... they have many entrees that could easily accommodate a keto/low carb diet like the Egg Breakfasts. Depending on how strict your macros are, you can substitute tomatoes or even their fruit cup in place of the toast, biscuit home fries, etc. My carb loving husband ordered the Southern Eggs Benedict which was a biscuit, sausage patties and basted eggs smothered with sausage gravy. If there weren't people around us, I think he would've licked the plate! The service was a little slow, which is the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. But I will say that our server was super friendly and had a good sense of humor. When she was taking the order for the booth next to us, one of the guys was asking her what I had and saying it looked good so she told me to watch out or he was going to eat mine! It just took a long time for her to refill my water and she knocked the bacon off the dish and onto the table and didn't offer to get me another order. I guess it's good that I'm not a germaphobe! (I picked the bacon up in 2 seconds!) It also took quite awhile to get our food, but not an unreasonably long time as we knew it was Saturday morning and they were quite busy. We've stopped in twice now and both times we left feeling incredibly full like pigs . It's a busy little restaurant with regulars and tourists alike. It's decor is cozy and quaint with Scottish dog motif on every space. Our server on both occasions didn't dilly dally, but quickly took our orders and kept our coffee cups full. I ordered the traditional eggs Benedict which was cooked to perfection as was the hollandaise sauce. Hubs always orders the same two eggs sausage patties with home fries every place we go. The food is great but the service is hit or miss and mostly miss, and often rude. It's a common theme there.
