I've stayed at similar hotels, like the Padre in Bakersfield, CA, and that hotel managed to blend the old and the new in a creative manner. How to fix the Plains Hotel? Double your housekeeping staff and sweep, polish, vacuum. Then store the stacks of unsightly banquet room chairs INSIDE of the rooms instead of the hallways. Then tear down the tacky printed signs that are taped all over the walls (they have nice metal room # signs, don't stop there!) Then find a tenant for the little café and re-open it, instead of offering the temporary "Chuck wagon" area for the continental breakfast. Finally, buy some NEW LIGHTING! In the lobby, hallways, and rooms. Way too dark and dingy throughout the property. ***No renovation needed, just some extra effort!! read more

This is an old hotel. It lacks a lot of the current amenities. It was still a very pleasant stay. Clean. Beautiful interior. Historic. Comfortable bed. Quiet. Friendly staff. Good Wifi. Ice machines. Mark, the evening/night manager, a recent transplant to Cheyenne, offered excellent recommendations on what to do and where to eat. He was so accommodating, friendly and willing to share what he knew about Cheyenne. The hotel has a great location. Just about anything you want to do is within walking distance. We found free street parking right by the hotel each evening, and did not have to park in the Hotel's parking lot a block away. The room was clean, the bathroom a bit dated, but functional. Given the location and the friendliness of the staff, I would gladly stay here again should our travels take us to Cheyenne. This was a much better experience than the standard tourist chain hotels -- historic and charming. read more

The most disappointing hotel experience I've ever had. While on a road trip we stopped in Cheyenne to visit family on Saturday July 19th. Because it was Frontier Days weekend we decided on only one night since the hotel rates were so expensive for that weekend. We checked into Plains hotel and while my husband tried turn on the TV I noticed there was no soap or towels in the bathroom. Upon exploring he discovered there was no power cord to the television. We called the front desk and maintenance came up. They left to obtain a new power cord and notify housekeeping that all supplies for the bathroom had not been stocked. We called them back because remote didn't work and it turned out the remote did not belong to the TV in the room. New remote was provided. After they left we noticed that the floor had not been swept after prior guest. YUCK. Left lots of concern over what had actually been cleaned? We left for dinner and returned to sleep. In the morning we realized there was no shower curtain!!!!!! Whaaat???!!!! Over $320 for one night and this was what you get? I gave the list of issues with checkout at the front desk and while he was extremely attentive and assured me that the GM would contact me, there was no follow up. No phone call, email, text message. We stayed at many hotels during this three week road trip. This hotel was the most expensive and the most disappointing. I will never stay at The Plains again and will certainly recommend it. This place is a complete joke. My friend and I booked and paid for a room here for Cheyenne Frontier Days back in March. Well today they canceled our reservation with no notice. Upon calling them we were informed that they had increased their prices due to it being an event. So they'll be charging us triple what we originally booked for, if we rebook and are even able to get a room now. Convenient of them to wait until everywhere else was sold out. The black mold, filthy floors, lack of grout in the bathroom, old, chipped paint, coffee pot with too short a cord, no accessible plugs for charging phone by bed, CPAP machine, restaurant is closed, and general lack of charming antiques except for the lobby. This place has so much potential. It's just dated. The staff is nice. Their reservation and check in process feels like it is stuck in the 50's. Our room was large and looked over the park. The windows were so dirty. They appear to not have been washed in a couple of years. It really needs the love and touch of someone who knows what they are doing. There are elements that are really special, but they just don't seem to go together. Definitely could use a good scrub and a little updating. Perfect location!! We were able to walk to so much from the hotel. After reading some of the reviews we were not sure what we would get, but the room was clean. Towels were worn, but clean, sheets were clean, carpet did have stains, but it had been vacuumed. Bathroom was clean. read more

JUST NO! This hotel sells itself as something other than it is. There is no on site parking at all. Lot is a couple blocks away. Hotel in desperate need of remodeling or even a good consistent deep cleaning. Stained carpets throughout, stained sheets and towels need to be tossed. Window a/c not acceptable cooling. The building is just worn completely out. Bed not that comfortable. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere. Made our first time to Cheyenne very negative. I love staying in historic hotels and am not bothered by the rooms or building being a bit run down, but though we saw no ghosts at this haunted hotel, our stay was indeed a nightmare. The lobby is very charming and Mario was helpful and friendly. That is where the positives ended. We arrived around 10pm, exhausted after 12+ hours of driving, and were welcomed to a room with the worst stained and torn carpet I have ever encountered. Not only was there a full-room constellation of dark greasy stains, but also white crusted ones that I will leave you to ponder the origin of. There were no towels in the bathroom and no hand soap. The mirror had water splotches, there was a smear in the toilet I won't get into, and long hairs visible on the tile floor. Mario was kind enough to bring up some towels for us, but the state of the room was still unacceptable. Then, pulling back the comforter, my bed had fresh mascara streaks and more long hair. Clearly, the towels had been collected and the bed was remade without changing or cleaning a thing. Luckily we had wipes with us and cleaned the bathroom ourselves before fetching linens to also make the beds ourselves.There was a blood colored finger smudge on the wall, and when we took a shower, the bathtub was clogged and the water backed up - who doesn't love wading in the back flow of the clogged hair of countless strangers? We went down to the front desk, got new linens and changed the beds ourselves. Had we not been beyond exhausted, we'd have hightailed it out of there. The next morning we spoke to someone on the phone who gave us an email address to contact, which we did, to no reply. The biggest shock of this stay was we paid $178 plus a $25 pet fee to clean our own room and wear our shoes from the bed to the bathroom to avoid touching the carpet. Beyond a refund we should be compensated as housekeepers for cleaning and stocking the room. We also found out these rooms went for $80 each not too long ago...it's shameful on all levels and we encourage anyone considering this hotel to bring their own cleaning supplies and linens because you will need them. read more

It's Historic charm is what attracted us to stay here. We stayed one night on the 4th floor. Room was comfortable but the downside was the noise of the AC unit and street traffic. I guess street racing on a Friday night is a thing. The bathroom needed updating with a moderately chipped tub. We enjoyed the recently opened bar and the owner was very personable. I recently stayed here and had a disappointing experience with their room availability. Upon arrival, I was informed all the single queen/king rooms were fully booked and they had only the double kings. At first I decided to pass, but I decided to check hotels.com just to see if they had options. Apparently there were 5 single queen-size rooms available. I went back in to ask about them and was told that while they were technically available, they were not cleaned. If I wanted one they would have to call in the cleaning service and I'd need to wait a couple hours. Seeing as how it was about 6 in the evening, and really didn't feel like searching the city for other options, I asked the desk clerk if they could give me the more expensive double king at the single queen price seeing as how I only needed the one bed. I just needed a place to stay alone for one night and have a shower in the morning. Sorry, not allowed to provide any discounts - ask the manager in the morning when he's here. I begrudgingly accepted that option as I just want to check in and relax for the night. Next morning I talked with the front desk manager and explain the situation. He was clearly trying to gaslight me, acting like I didn't know what I was talking about, and telling me only the double kings were available and there was nothing he could do. This felt like a blatant attempt to upsell me to a pricier room the previous evening. If the single queen rooms were available in the system, why weren't they prioritized for cleaning before the expensive room? I reluctantly paid for the more expensive room as I needed to settle in rather than wait for who knows how long for them to get their cleaning service in there. It was deceptive and the manager was unnecessarily disrespectful to my concerns the next morning. The lack of transparency the seemingly unnecessary need to pay more left me quite annoyed. I absolutely do not recommend this "hotel" based on their slimy business practices. read more

I was summoned for US District Court jury duty last week in Cheyenne. Despite reading recent reviews, I booked a "one- night or one week" stay there because it's in the center of Cheyenne, walkable to everything, and full of history. I'm so glad I did. If you are somebody who sees historic as "outdated", this hotel is probably not for you, but the sheets were clean, the water pressure was good, and the hotel staff was so accommodating with restaurant advice, historic tales, and even "if anything in your room is not up to par, let us know and we'll fix it or get you another". Everybody is short staffed these days and this staff is pulling their weight- concierging, accommodating, cleaning, and decorating.... they are putting their hearts and souls into this place, Unfortunately I was dismissed from the jury- I wanted to stay for the week. The historic elevator is teeny- tiny-awesome, and the tiles are old but charming. If you are somebody more drawn to the Chelsea Hotel than Hampton Garden Inn, you'll love it. If you require usb plug ins, bring your own adapter. They do have wifi and lots of charm. p.s. The website for this hotel is very deceiving. While you step back in time when you walk in, there is no restaurant or bar which means you have to leave to get food. We stayed on the fifth floor and could hear all the traffic from the road. The wall heating unit was loud and constantly turned on and off. We're glad we're not spending a second night. The best feature of the hotel is the location. We walked to the Rib and Chop restaurant which was excellent. Plenty of stores as you're in the city. If I was in the real estate business I would consider buying this place and turning it into a multi-use building with shopping and apartments. The biggest problem would be parking. DO NOT STAY HERE. It's NOT what the website shows!!! I would love to rate this place a quarter star but that's not possible. We booked in advance based on the hotel website. The place looked like basic rooms with a quaint area. The room we received had mold on the ceiling, raggedy towels, dirty pillows and bedding (crusty blanket!), and a door lock that looked like it had been broken through. Nails were still sticking out of the trim around the busted lock/entry. The pillows were stained and the extras in the closet were stained and without pillow cases. We requested another room. It was better, but still had crusty blankets, questionable pillow (again dirty and without cases?). We thought this room was a far cry better than the previous until we closed the curtains: blood? Fecal material? At best, food? Additionally, trying to get a straight answer about parking from anyone from the front desk was a comedy of errors: everyone acted as if they'd never heard the questions we were asking, as there is no parking on the premises. Okay. Background: week long road trip, 11 states, 4 hotels, 2 very tired travelers trying to outrun an ice storm. Historic hotels appeal to us, see The Mining Exchange and Hotel Bothwell. We hoped for similar here. Hugely disappointed in the conditions, but like another reviewer we think someone just needs to love this place. It has character and great stories, the staff were absolutely wonderful and friendly and very concerned about guests security. The building itself needs some tlc and the housekeeping staff needs some motivation. Someday, I hope this Diamond in the rough gets the right investors and gets polished up. read more

My wife and I checked in to the Historic Great Plains Hotel on October 2 planning to stay two nights. We have stayed in historic hotels before so I expected quirky. I was excited about the prospect of staying in yet another piece of history. What I did not expect was how dirty, run down and poorly run the hotel was. I wish we had taken a clue from the closed restaurant and the miscellaneous pieces of dirty restaurant equipment strewn in what must have once been the restaurant to the right of the front door. The lobby was in a disarray, but it appeared that someone was attempting to decorate for the season. (The effort would have been better spent cleaning.) The restaurant was not the only area downstairs that was blocked and unsafe, the hallway with the "collection of antique items" was blocked for some reason not known to me. We checked in and went to our room on the second floor. At first, I was distracted by the lovely, old architecture. It was only after we got to our room, I began to recognize that the hotel was not quirky, it was dirty. The old worn carpet in our room was so stained that I could not imagine putting my feet on it. There was one soiled chair, a king bed and an apartment sized refrigerator. The small window air conditioning unit was blocking any view one might have had but the windows were so desperately in need of washing that I don't think that it would have mattered, you could barely see out anyway and the view was of some un-housed people who had congregated on the street corner. I pulled back the fitted sheet to discover a stained mattress that had yellowed with age. I immediately began to check for bed bugs. I will say in all honesty that I did not find any. The carpet in the hallway was so stained that it was difficult to determine the exact color. Dust was thick on the furniture and the baseboards. We checked out of the hotel that afternoon and moved to another location. We did not expect reimbursement for the first night's lodging. We chalked that up to a lesson learned. We are still waiting for reimbursement of the second night's lodging. It is my sincere hope that if we don't get our money back the hotel will at least use it for cleaning supplies and someone who knows how to use a vacuum cleaner and dust cloth. I wish I had taken pictures, but it was never my intention to write a review. We left there hoping that the owners would find a way to clean and restore the hotel and that it would be the crown jewel of downtown Cheyenne that it should be but now realize that they have no intention of doing so. Word to the wise, ask to see your room before you give them your credit card. read more

I was told first off I needed to have any visitor I had fill out a visitor application before they could visit and they needed to be approved. A back ground check for a visitor? Second the maids didn't do a satisfactory job in cleaning the room before hand. I went to retrieve my shoe from under the bed the same day I checked in and found a pair of woman's pants with crusty panties attached them next to a used container of ASTRO glide (lube). We made our choice online based on this being a historic hotel and that it was in downtown Cheyenne. We were 1 day after Frontier Days, but our room rate was still $225 fir the nite. The lobby is charming and exudes what we expected for a Cheyenne Wyoming historic hotel. The elevator ( we were given a room on the 5th floor) was also charming and tiny. Tacky explanation posted on paper inside. The charm ended there. Our room was small was not very clean. Spots on towels, tub/shower looked like it needed a good scrubbing. But we didn't find or see and bugs. The window unit A/C was blowing slightly cool air, but was fairly useless. We were exhausted from a long drive, so we put up with the room. Sad that a historic hotel cannot even manage to have clean rooms, nevermind that updates are sorely needed. read more

Just don't stay here. I love historical buildings. I was excited to stay here until we got here, and then I wanted to find the nearest place that was not here. The room was tiny. Beds were uncomfortable. Loading and unloading your luggage is a pain. There are only a few places up front you can park & then your car will end up over a block from you. As with any Historic hotel, there are many pluses and minuses. I do not lower my score at all for those quirks and imperfections that are inherent in this type of establishment. The tiny elevator? An incovenience, but it works and is part of the Hotel's charm. The lack of electrical out lets? Same thing. A hotel built in 1911 did not anticipate our electronic age and the need to plug in at least three electronic devices. So what were the pluses? The room we had was huge. We made a reservation last minute so one of the few rooms left was a double queen suite. It was a real suitewith two separate rooms - one was a sitting room with comfortable overstuffed chairs and a couch. There was also a mini fridge, microwave and desk. The bedroom was also spacious. The beds were very comfortable and the room, for the most part, was clean. Some of the minuses - Check-in was a little convoluted. I had reserved the room on line and they had a hard time finding my reservation. The front desk staff were a little short with us and said they were completely filled up. It was not the fine hotel expeience I expected. One of the reviewers noted that it was remodeled about 20 years ago. I would say it needs another update. The room, while comfortable, has odd pieces of furniture that look like 70's era cast offs bought in a yard sale. There were insufficient cups and the coffee maker had not been cleaned out from the last guest. The electrical outlets were mostly inaccessable, overloaded or inoperable. The shower was weak and tepid. There is also no dedicated parking for the hotel. There is a public garage a few blocks away that is free for out of state vehicles, but shlepping bags is a bit of a hassle. The hotel seems geared to an older clientel. While I like the historic feel to it, some upgrading may make it a bit more attracive to a younger crowd. read more

Booked a room online through Booking.com, then noticed that it stated that Cheyenne locals couldn't stay there. Recently moved to Casper, but still have Cheyenne IDs. We own a few properties in Cheyenne and needed one night to do some business in town. My husband decided to call and check if we needed to cancel. The owner stated that "Cheyenne people are trashy and disgusting. It's my policy." He then said that he would be willing to let us stay there if we gave him $200 cash. No wonder this place is falling apart, it has an awful owner. He's ruining his own business. Don't waste your time. Find a better hotel with a decent staff. We just always wondered what this place was like so we figured one night wouldn't hurt. read more

Love a historic hotel! The staff was great and the rooms were nice. But I will warn you, you are staying in a hotel that is over 100 years old so if you are expecting a room like you would get at the chain hotels you are going to be disappointed. They have done everything to keep it comfortable & some what modern without getting rid of the old world charm and history. I could roam this hotel for hours looking at the pictures , plaques & displays. You really do feel like your stepping back in history. At first I couldn't figure out why the elevator was so tiny and then I saw the plaque explain that it was intentionally made that small to keep drunk cowboys from trying to take their horses up to the room. lol read more

The collection of items would make for a good museum alone. The artwork and furnishings added to our love of adventure. Our room was large and overlooked the station. The bed was very comfortable and the linens were clean. It's located within walking distance of many great shopping and eating places. I was nervous about having to park on the street overnight but then remembered we were in Wyoming, where most people are genuinely good people. When we were here during Covid, it was at 5% occupancy of 164 rooms so it felt like a ghost town. Staff was at 4 people. Doors locked, reception closed, I had to call a number when I arrived, there was extra toilet paper and towels on the reception counter in case you needed more. Curiously, there was _no soap_ in the room (or other toiletries) and no Purell in the lobby. This is a beautiful 1911 money-pit of a hotel that originally served the historic train station. It looked like it takes ongoing renovations. The stained glass ceiling is incredible. It is wonderfully located, though with busy streets on both sides and no parking. Well-priced. Our room was 25'x25' two double beds plus pull-out sofa for $90. Room 424. My general take-away: a great price, comfortable room, and a beautiful historic building, but the lack of soap has me alarmed. That being said, I would come here again. read more
