We were in town and looking for a place for dinner and we stumbled upon this Georgian restaurant. There are a few Georgian restaurants back home that we love- so we decided to give it a try. It was bustling with activity with a few large parties. While we were there - every table filled up. They were out of our first wine choice, but our server suggested another option which we enjoyed. We were brought complimentary bread served with a cleverly constructed herbed butter candle. We started with a shared salad and ended up ordering the chicken with a garlic sauce, lamb with mashed potatoes and grilled octopus. Everyone enjoyed their meal. I don't know if they have music every evening, but when we were leaving there was a trio and vocalist playing jazz. Nice touch! read more

Opened just months ago, The History is a place that merges museum like expositions, live music and creative food into a pleasing Georgian Restaurant. That, is impressive, even in a city where everything has been done before, then refined, done again, copied by someone and polished off. As a big lover of Georgian food, it's always exciting to try a new establishment. First to set the record straight, this is, for the most part, not traditional Georgian food. From how the dishes are presented to the selection on the menu, it's a modern reinterpretation of Georgian dishes. The presentation is very creative, from the edible candle appetizer to the meticulously decorated Pkhali plate. The chefs are clearly targeting to bring things that are new to a city that is now starting to get used to the classics of the region. With that said, not all dishes are diverging from tradition, with staples like Khachapuri and Khinkali largely done in a very standard manner. So, let's look at the dishes. They were out of Adjarian Khachapuri on the evening of the visit, so the table went for the Imeretian version. Of course, a much simpler and often, less favored cousin of the Adjarian variant. That was disappointing. Khachapuri is not a dish requiring a lot of ingredients, so hard to imagine what the kitchen ran out of. The khinkali, Georgia's traditional dumplings, were sadly very tough dough and very dry filling. Some of the worst out there, so maybe it was just a mistake in the kitchen. For the main course, the Kharcho with slow cooked beef is a solid main course, with very tender beef preparation. Maybe it's not "comfort food" or homey as a lot of Georgian dishes tend to be, but it was prepared with great attention. Where History Restaurant surprised and confused the table was the wine. Georgia is the region of the world where wine was invented, so having a wine list like this is a bit of a slap in the sakhe (face in Georgian). There is no dry orange wine, Georgia's most notable creation and a favorite. When it comes to the dry reds, there is only a handful, literally. Aside from a couple cheap table wines, there are only two bottles on the entire menu of dry reds and both are from the same winery, Winiveria. It's maybe the smallest wine list in New York aside from a pizza joint. The highlight was in the service of the team here. The waitress by the name of Ana is spectacular, attentive and kind. The other staff are also great. The History has great potential and being a new establishment, hopefully they iron out the details in the coming months. New York is a tough town that does not allow for too many mistakes in this business and this was a tough experience to set the foundation for coming back. read more

I was so excited to try this new restaurant, unfortunately it was a mixed bag. The space itself is gorgeous. They've spent a lot of money decorating. The ambience is very upscale and the menu prices match that. The night we arrived they had a live band playing in the main room. We were sat in the back and oddly there was no music playing via a speaker so it was kind of quiet. They brought out complementary bread, which comes with a seaweed butter and a candle to help it melt. Interesting, although no one at our table enjoyed the seaweed butter as it was very fishy. They were out of the cheese boats so we ordered the IMERETIAN KHACHAPURI, which was delicious - bread and cheese, how can you go wrong? We also ordered the GEORGIAN PKHALI PALETTE which is an assortment of dips which were great as well. My friend had the chicken soup and the presentation is awesome. They bring out the bowl with the ingredients minus the broth, then pour it over. I tried some and it was super flavourful. Then the main courses came and things took a turn. Most of us were underwhelmed. Tiny portions. High prices. I had the $44 MEGRELIAN KHARCHO WITH SLOW-COOKED BEEF & TRUFFLED GHOMI. It was a tiny piece of meat which was overcooked, hard to cut into (slow cooked they say?), the inside was dried out, and the bottom a layer of fat. Service was fine. Waitress was nice. They have a door to exit the restaurant in the back room next to where we were seated. It was the coldest night of the year and the staff kept going in and out of that door to go on their breaks, smoke cigarettes, etc. They should rethink using that door as an exit since all the freezing air was blowing in on us. Not sure if they're gonna last as the prices seem way too high and don't match what's being brought out to the table. I wish them luck! Overall I was expecting a much better experience. read more

Consensus seems like the service is friendly and welcoming but unfortunately the food is mid. The bean bread was decent with the side of kimchi that was surprisingly tasty. The appetizer platter of the different dips was a pass for me. The mashed potatoes were over whipped but okay. The Georgian salad was okay. Bread was crusty and delicious but that shouldn't be the highlight. The restaurant itself is nice. I like the individual restroom stalls and how you don't have to wait to wash your hands because it's separate from the stalls. read more

It was not that soft, very fatty and drowned in a heavy sauce. The Cauliflower Steak is ... well just ok. Salmon is a bit salty. They need to upgrade the cooking. Very cool experience trying Georgian food for the first time. The space looked amazing as they opened up 2 weeks ago there were some kinks but overall great spot and I was told it's the first of its kind Georgian/fusion in the world. We started off with soup as it was freezing outside and the pouring presentation was awesome DOSHORVA vegetarian and I had the CHIKHIRTMA (chicken soup) amazing We weren't super hungry so we tried their Georgia like quesadillas called IMERETIAN KHACHAPURI it was delicious and it cheese from the country Georgia. From the moment I stepped through the doors of History, I was completely transported -- not just to a restaurant, but to Georgia itself. The experience here is unlike anything else in NYC. First, I have to highlight the hospitality. Anna, the host, was amazing, warm, attentive, and truly welcoming. The manager was equally incredible, making sure every detail was perfect. The service here is unique, professional, and genuinely attractive, adding to the luxury of the night. The entire evening felt like a cultural journey. The dancers were breathtaking, the jazz band set the perfect mood, and the food was absolutely delicious. These performances and experiences happen daily (except Mondays), so you really can't go wrong celebrating any occasion here. And the space? Stunning. They even have King and Queen private rooms that hold up to 20 or 12 guests, ideal for birthdays, celebrations, or intimate gatherings. We stopped in here mid afternoon on a weekend and there were only a few other diners. The service was really attentive -- our server very eager to explain the food and the restaurant decor. I'm not that familiar with Georgian food, admittedly, and everything tasted fairly different from the Cheeseboat up the street. I enjoyed our meal, although I thought it was a little pricy. Nothing really blew me away --- except the decor. Husband had a veal dish and I had the chicken shkmerulo. (I really liked the pickled tomatoes served with it.) . We also had a khachapuri. First time for me to step into a Georgian restaurant so unable to leave a very professional comment on food, but at least it's delicious. The best service I have ever had, the servers are supportive and enthusiastic. Band on the scene is good, and the decoration is luxurious. Admittedly, not cheap, I made a six course order (salad, soup, Georgian bread, main course and dessert) and turned out to be more than $100 but I'm only 70% full. The place is overpriced, service is all over the place. Our experience was not great there . First the hostess could not find the reservation I have made , then three of us got only one menu and one wine list and had to keep asking for two more , then the waiter messed up the order and refused to acknowledge his mistake . We did not stay for desert and when we payed our bill and were ready to walk out the menagerie came to our table with some kind of survey , trying to make sure that we would leave a positive feedback . It's a beautiful mix of Georgian culture mixed with New York's luxury style fine dining. It's full of Georgian artifacts and cultural treasures. The food is very delicious. Saying this as a Georgian, this is how I'd love my cuisine to be represented. If you need full Georgian culinary experience, then without a single doubt visit this place. Our New Year's Eve celebration at this Georgian restaurant was extremely disappointing, especially given the price. We paid $400 per person, including children, and the experience was nowhere near acceptable. There was simply not enough food. As Georgians, we know that hospitality and abundance are core parts of our culture, especially on New Year's Eve. Serving five pieces of khinkali for six people and only four pieces of khachapuri for six people is absolutely unacceptable by Georgian standards--or any standards for a paid celebration. There was no champagne at all, the organization was very poor, and the service was horrible. Staff were inattentive and unprofessional, and the evening felt chaotic rather than festive. Even more concerning, the restaurant made no effort to accommodate a child with a gluten-free allergy. They could not offer a single suitable option--not even something as basic as potatoes, which they didn't have in the restaurant at all. Overall, this was a very, very bad experience and completely not worth the price. We would not recommend this restaurant read more

Review of The History: Georgian Fusion Restaurant - New York City This evening I had the great pleasure of dinning at The History, a 2-week old Georgian fusion restaurant in the Theater District of New York City at 645 9th Avenue, New York, New York (212-595-7700). As a New Jersey resident, I frequently come into New York city for meetings and/or entertainment or cultural activities and to sample some of my favorite restaurants and explore new dinning experiences. Today, following a matinee, I was planning on visiting my favorite 100-year old Greek Bakery, Poseidon, to have dinner. As I walked passed The History, I was so impressed just by looking into the restaurant and was so eager to try Georgian food I called an audible and modified my dinner plans - I decided to purchased something from Poseidon to take home and eat tomorrow evening so that I could dine at The History this evening. I was so glad that I did as It was one of the best meals I have had in some time (and I know good food as my youngest daughter has lived in Paris for the past 2 ¼ years and have visited multiple times and have had some amazing meals). Aesthetically, The History occupies a large corner space and from the outside looked so appealing and inviting - beautiful and comfort-looking chairs, amazing artwork, costumes and other culturally-relevant treasures of Georgia and one of the most impressive and beautifully appointed bars - and my interest in trying Georgian food for the first time were the hooks that drew me in. Once I was seated, I learned from my very friendly and well-informed server, Ana, that the restaurant had only been open 2 weeks and that three chefs had recently been brought over from Georgia specifically for the restaurant. As I had never eaten Georgian food before, Ana walked me through the very descriptive and varied menu and answered all my questions and suggested a menu option among four selections I was considering. I had Tushetian-style Beef with current sauce and potato gratin. Ana described the sauce with such detail - that it included plum and black currents, among other elements- and that the beef was cooked sous vide method for a significant amount of time. I cook sous vide frequently at home and this beef was amongst the most tender I have ever eaten and the sauce was bursting with flavor. Also, at Ana's suggestion, I tried Imeretian Khachapuri, traditional Georgian cheese filled bread, that was fantastic. My only regret was that I was dinning alone and could not select several appetizers, salads and entrees to sample a larger variety Georgian dishes. I have already made plans with some culinary explorer friends to visit The History the next time we visit Broadway in the New Year. The bottom line is that the food was amazing, the service was spectacular and the beautifully-appointed restaurant, from the spacious and clean restrooms to the comfortable chairs and spacious seating, led to one of my favorite culinary experiences of the year. The worst Georgian restaurant I have ever been to. The experience was rotten from the moment we had an unpleasant interaction with a snooty hostess. Horrible service, where it took an hour to take our drink orders, bring water and get us napkins. The food was very bland, lamb chops were tiny (1 piece only) instead of usual 2-3. When owner asked us for a feedback - we told him the truth about the service, etc.. He got very agitated and angry and told us not to come back if we don't like it. We will take his advice... Terrible...borderline ridiculous dining experience. 12 of us for dinner. Our table was given 3 menus. What's that about? They spent so much on the opulent decor they can't afford more menus? The appetizer spreads were unremarkable. We each ordered entrees, and it took a full hour from the first one to the last one being brought to our table, literally an HOUR. Mine was one of the earlier ones delivered, yet, barely warm. No apologies from staff-everyone behaving as though this is normal. Live music was good but too loud. My wife mentioned this to the manager(?) hostess(?), but the response was "it's a live band". Yes we could see that, and there is a way to lower the volume with a live band. In short, servers badly in need of training, kitchen apparently needs more staff, music is too loud. Food just ok and not worth the high prices. Management apparently not observing that service is abysmal and patrons are uncomfortable, wondering if food will ever be brought to the table. Extremely disappointing experience. Not recommended. We had a terrible experience at The History in Manhattan. The khinkali were simply bad -- the dough was hard and chewy, completely wrong for Georgian cuisine. No flavor, no authenticity, nothing enjoyable. The service was poor and careless. We were seated at a tiny table for two right next to the entrance, where the door kept opening nonstop. It was cold, uncomfortable, and clearly no thought was given to guests' comfort -- only to squeezing in as many tables as possible. The space is extremely tight. My husband ended up hurting his back just from sitting there -- that's how cramped and uncomfortable it was. Dining here felt stressful instead of enjoyable. This place seems to care only about profit, not about people. After we left, we checked the ratings -- and honestly, the high scores feel completely unjustified. In my opinion, they look inflated and not reflective of the real experience. Overall, very overrated, uncomfortable, bad food, bad service. We regret going there and would absolutely not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more
