Booked a truck through Home Depot that was fulfilled by Penske, and the experience was extremely misleading. The Home Depot site clearly states "unlimited mileage on ALL vehicles," which is not true for Penske rentals. There is no clear distinction during booking, and I was charged per mile after the fact. On top of that, Penske promotes a 15% discount code that is accepted during checkout but later denied, claiming it only applies to one-way rentals. This restriction is not clearly disclosed. I attempted to resolve this directly with both companies. Home Depot redirected me to Penske, Penske redirected me back to Home Depot, and a Penske supervisor even hung up on me during the call. Went to garden center at 9:30AM and found some plants I wanted. Outside entrance to registers not open yet. Went inside main door and spoke to some associates about doors not being open. Was told "will open in a few minutes". I wandered the store awhile, and then saw doors were still not open. I had to go outside, retrieve my cart, go inside and paid for them at the self-checkout. The garden doors still closed almost 2 hours after opening time, lack of management presence and unconcerned staff attitude gives this visit a FAIL for customer service. read more

WILL NEVER PURCHASE A PLANT HERE AGAIN I wish I took before and after photos but I'd never experienced this so I wasn't thinking taking photos would be necessary. I visited this Home Depot location in search of a new Monsterra plant (Swiss cheese plant) and saw several indoors. Most of them had sun burned leaves, I noticed a few were wilted. They just did not look great. I spoke with a Home Depot representative about this and asked if they offered discounts. She admitted the plants do not come over in this condition from the vendor but Home Depot neglected to ensure they were properly covered when outdoors. Hence the sun burned leaves. Due to these plants coming directly from the vendors, they do not offer discounts on them. Something about the way things are paid out, yada yada. Didn't make sense to me AFTER already admitting fault. But I took a chance and purchased the best looking plant. I've own plenty of plants and sun burned one myself. I know how to nurse it back to health. Lately I've noticed little white specs on the plant and it wilting more than normal. After further research, it's infested with mealybugs. UGH!!!!! I can no longer shop in this store. They seem to have some kind of affirmative action hiring going on which would be fine if the kids had a clue, actually helped you and spoke to you respectfully. I purchased 4 50 lb bags of play sand 10 pkg of peet pots and a small rhododendron. I went to the garden center to pay. I was shuffled between two registers. I was not given a bag for the pots and asked for a large one. Very rudely the girl at one of the registered said we only have small ones. I asked for several then. The rude boy named Roy handed two small bags to my 7 year old grandson who tried to bag. I requested Roy do the bagging since he worked there. I was then bombarded with rude comments from those two plus another both saying I was disrespecting Roy! Why because I asked him to do his job? He "threatened " to get a manager. I said good please get a manager. He then tried to stuff the rest of the pots into the already full bags. I told he I needed to be able to access the handles. The girl finally gave me a bag and I bagged myself snd left to taunting that I was disrespecting them. I called the manager and corporate. I have spent thousands in this store including a completely new bathroom. But I can no longer go to that store and be treated like a piece of trash by young, incompetent, rude children. read more

I wanted to purchase a saw, but the one I wanted to buy was security padlocked to the shelf. After 20 minutes of walking up and down the store searching for a staff member, i decided to just set off the silly little alarm on the saw. In the time it has taken me to write this review as the alarm going was off, I have still not seen a single staff member. I came to the realization that I should not have to jump through hoops like this in order to give somebody my money. I just bought the exact same saw off Amazon. Large location that's easy to find since it's right across the street from Louis Joliet Mall. Ordered some tiling from their website and it came in as promised with absolutely no issues. There was a bit of a delay getting it from the back of the store to the front, but I'm guessing that has more to do with the pandemic and being short handed than being unprepared. I stopped in today looking for some items for a couple projects from mostly their garden center. The staff I encountered in the garden center were all helpful and friendly. They even entertained my son while he's in what I call his Politician Phase (as he walks through places he waves and says hi to everyone) and kept saying hi back to him. Which is bonus points because I know it can get annoying as he even does it to me throughout the day and we live in the same house. Big shoutout to one employee. I believe her name was Karen. She helped me repair my flip flop that had broken. She was in a good humor about it, did not seem at all put out, and even checked on how it was holding up while I shopped. I needed 2 things from inside the store- spray paint and a screen for a window. The paint was a quick grab as I'm familiar with that area but my previous dealings have always been positive with the paint folks (i wish I could remember the name of the very patient woman a couple years ago who helped me get a project off the ground- she was awesome). On the other hand I had no clue where screens are but logic told me they'd be in the windows and doors section. I wandered over and stood in front of the design area for this section looking at the signs on the aisles. None I could see said "screens". The older guy wearing the apron in this area seemed to hyper focus on whatever he was reading once I stopped. I eventually found something that would work for what I needed after a bit of wandering (even passing other customers in this section) but curiosity got the best of me. I walked past the older guy. Silence. Went back the other way. Nothing. As I stood at the end of the aisle wondering if what I really wanted was just under my nose the screen I was holding slid out on its track and banged onto the floor. He flinched but didn't even look up which was equal parts irritating and a relief as I was beginning to worry about his welfare. I wandered back towards garden, got yelled at by a door that I needed to stay away from as it is restricted (what's in there?!? I went to the Joliet Home Depot to buy wood and a sander. What a huge disappointment. The lumber department was a huge mess. The lumber that I looked at (and I looked at a lot of different cuts) was not only terribly warped, but split and broken and covered with some sticky residue. Some you couldn't look at because it was wrapped tightly with some plastic probably used for shipping, but needed to be cut by something sharp. Spent at least half an hour looking at various widths for my project, but left empty handed. Then went to find a sander. That too was a joke. They literally had three. Off to Menards I went. I bought a Whirlpool refrigerator from Home Depot. Within 2 weeks, we realized it was not working right and continued to get worse. He wasn't getting cold enough in the freezer and the ice maker wasn't working. Within a few days, it started freezing in the refrigerator but still did not get cold enough in the freezer. I called Home Depot and they would not help because they only cover the product for 48 hours after delivery. They completely washed their hands of us and refuse to help. Meanwhile, Whirlpool is giving us the run around and are making it so hard to get anything covered under their warranty. It is a mess! I went here for a quick in and out purchase. I noticed a lawn mower in the rental section marked "ready for sale". I know these are typically reduced by a small percent so I figured I'd ask about them. It took about 5 minutes to inquire with the rental guy, who told me to take the mower down to garden and ask for Mike or Kurt, who apparently were the only ones who could tell me how much this mower was. I knew taking the mower with me would be silly so I walked to garden where 2 employees said Mike went home but that Kurt was over in customer service. I walked over to customer service where 3 employees standing around said Kurt is down in the rental tools department. Literally where I started. I thought these guys had radios or something...? Anyways, I start walking back and asked an employee I saw by checkout if he knew where Kurt was. He said maybe aisle 13, but no promises... Now I'm really frustrated. I walk to aisle 13, no employees at all in this aisle. As I'm walking back to rental, I see 2 younger guys who were moving a pallet jack and stocking shelves. I explained to them that everyone is sending me in circles I just need to find Kurt. So they walked me directly to him. That was the only time during my visit that I received great customer service. Somehow Kurt was in the rental department. In fact he was cutting tile for a female customer. I've never been offered to have my tile cut for me at Home Depot so this was a bit of a shocker to see. The employee I first spoke with looks at me a bit surprised and said oh you're back! I was not enthused and said yep I guess that's Kurt he's supposed to tell me how much these mowers are. The employee then scanned each mower to tell me how much they retailed for but still couldn't give me the discount but said Kurt could. I stood there waiting for Kurt to finish cutting this lady's tile, but he kept cutting more and more. Even telling her which tools she needed for the job then doing it for her... After waiting and waiting and watching this manager cut this lady's tile, I decided not to spend my money and walked out very upset. It's mind blowing that a manager is this hard to find, none the less cutting tile for a customer which is basically giving money away because you are supposed to rent or buy these tools... It made me mad to see this because I was ready to spend money, and this guy was too busy giving it away to a female customer while his stock employees do all the work. RIDICULOUS! read more

While being in this store and waiting on my husband and daughter I witnessed 2 occasions of employee rudeness. One customer was paying and had some type of issue so the cashier walked away from him into a group of employees standing close by with an aggravated approach and talked under her breath to them about the situation and customer. The other thing I witnessed was this same group of employees who are covering the front of the store said to a couple leaving the store "have a nice day". Once they didn't hear her she responded to the other employee "maybe not" Looks like due to the employees standing around with not much to do that they are taking on a helpful lending approach on one hand and then a negative approach as well. read more

From start to finish, our project took about one month. The service inside the store, in the window department, was less than satisfactory. He was occupied with other customers and less than apologetic for the wait. We scheduled a day for measurements, and Lincoln from Home Depot arrived on time. He assessed the problem and quoted us $2500 for an identical replacement (a three-panel, crank window by Andersen). Because we are moving out of the home, I insisted that we did not want the top of the line window. The window replacement was a requirement during the buyer's home inspection, so we wanted to go the most inexpensive route possible. Andersen is typically more expensive, and crank windows are also expensive. It took some push and shove to finally get what I wanted. Lincoln explained that he needed to see our HOA bylaws and get a signature from the HOA president if we did not want the identical window. That wasn't a problem, but he did waste some of his time (and ours) trying to talk us into the more expensive windows. After morphing into super-controlling-bitchy-housewife-boss mode, I insisted that a slide panel window would be fine (as neighbors have replaced their patio doors with not-exactly-identical styles), but we wanted to match the color. The price was brought down to $1300. I saved more than $1000 by being pushy and asking questions - sometimes being a bitch pays off. A few days later, Tom came to our house to re-measure the windows. He arrived a few minutes early! Tom came back to the house and installed the window in 2 1/2 hours. He arrived early, cleaned up his mess, and did fantastic work. Home Depot was quite speedy with the entire process and kept us apprised of their arrival and pending installation. My only gripe was the back and forth I had with Lincoln when he went through our options and made it sound as if we didn't have any options other than the Andersen window for $2500. If you use Home Depot, be an informed consumer, push until you can't push any harder. There ARE more options, but their job is to SELL things to you, so don't take what they give you the first time if you aren't looking for luxury, top of the line products. read more

We bought a refrigerator (including delivery, install and haul away) for our rental townhouse located 6 houses down the block. Home Depot never asked if our address was different from install address. When they arrived at our house they refused to take the refrigerator the 6 houses down and left it in our truck in our driveway. My 66 yr old disabled husband now has to somehow get this thing up 12 steps at the townhouse, installed and the old one down the stairs and disposed of. My 4 yo son got stuck in their shopping cart. Not one employee helped us. Cashier called for a manager finally after a visiting vendor asked her too. My only focus was getting him out. I was so glad when the vendor and another customer assisted us. It took 4 people to get him out. Very frightening. While my son screamed, " I'm going to die". If I could give this business ZERO stars I would. My daughter and son in law went there to get carpet in 4 rooms and a hallway along with "life proof" vinyl flooring in their dining room. The total job is about 5K. Home Depot sends out a guy to measure all of the rooms and make sure all is "good" for the flooring installation. Great right??? They come out today to install the vinyl flooring, they rip out the carpet and padding then inform my daughter that the floor is not level and they will need to do an additional $1,400 of work to install the floor which includes all new baseboards. When questioned about it the answer is that there is a "disclaimer" in the paperwork, funny how NO ONE ever mentioned that while they were taking the $5,000 for the job! What a scam this is not the way a decent company does business. No one is disputing that unforeseen things could happen but to not even mention it to the consumer when you are selling the product to them is a complete RIPOFF. My daughter called the store and the corporate office and was told some BS about this being one of those unforeseen issues! Of course what are you going to do as the carpet you had is ripped up and now you are standing on sub floor! They have you in a crappy situation and they know it so they don't care because they know most people have to bite the bullet and pay the extra cash to get their house back in order! If I were you I would stay as far away from this company as possible, they only care about you while they are taking your money. As soon as they have the cash they could not care less about you. Remember they throw things on "sale" because they know they are going to nail you with a bunch of BS "unforeseen" charges! I had two toddlers with me and I would always go to change one and or interrupt Scott to calm one down. Driving down Plainfield Road I saw, "Shrubs! 50 percent off!" at Home Depot. Hey, I love discounted perennials so I screeched into the parking lot. Got closer to the sign, which said, "50 Percent off SELECT shrubs." Well, ok. So I grab a boxwood. A fine shrub if there ever was one. The sweet girl at checkout called some Plant Man, who said, "Oh, no. That is not one of the SELECT shrubs." OK. So I tried again. I wandered through the plant section, and found a large shelving area which was marked with handwritten "50 percent off" signs, written in Sharpie on 2 inch yellow masking tape. Mind you, these signs were ALL OVER this shelving section. No, really...like a dozen signs on one unit. So...there's another boxwood, sitting under the 50 PERCENT OFF sign. And not just one boxwood, left by some soccer mom distracted by her soccer child. Not a random, misplaced boxwood, which might have been foolishly removed from the INSANELY OVERPRICED SHRUB section and dropped in the LOW RENT WEED area. No. Dozens of boxwoods, left there (STRANGELY enough) as if to make customers AWARE of their DISCOUNTED PRICE, one might think. So I say to Plant Man...."This is 50 percent off, right?" "No," he says. Only "SELECT shrubs." Um. So. yeah....ignore the blatant 50 percent off signs. Hey, Teacher! Leave Those Shrubs Alone! Take a guess at what's half off, create your own definition of "select," or just expect to pay the ridiculously inflated full shrub price and see what happens at checkout. Nice place. I like getting some stuff here every now and then. But, I usually go to Menards on Jefferson Street for a few reasons. It is closer to my house and the staff of Menards are willing to stop what they are doing and help me. Which is very nice. Extremely nice. I came in here the other days asking where the liquid plumber is at. I was told what number aisle it was in and the staff went about talking about whatever. At Menards, they tell me where it is and ask if I would like to be shown where it is. Now that is service. I needed the liquid plumber for work, otherwise if this was for my home, I would have turned around and walked out. I guess I expect certain things from certain stores. Especially, when people say Home Depot is the Macy's, and Menards is the Walmart of the home repair/gardening super stores. Nope. Nada. Wrong. read more

By far the worst service I have ever came across at any Home Depot location. I called them because I was trying to register an item I purchased, for it's lifetime warranty & within the website it asked me for my receipt code, (I was never given an actual receipt I was given a paper copy of one). On this receipt I am missing 4 numbers to register the item & the entire experience of calling them was ridiculous. I spoke to 3 different people before I was put to a manager who as the rest of his employees, had no idea on how to help. I am a homeowner doing a large home rehab. This store is 1 mile from me but I will make the ride to anywhere but there. I keep giving them a chance but the lack of staff,the auto checkouts that are useless and the fact they seem to be out of what I need make me drive elsewhere.
