I bought two packages of bleeding heart roots to plant. The roots in both packages were totally dried up and worthless. I can't imagine that some other customer hadn't complained, yet the roots were still on display and being sold at full price. $21.96 down the drain. I didn't return the roots, as I couldn't find the receipt and Palatine isn't my local store so it's a bit of a trek. I will not be returning to the Palatine Home Depot. read more

Home Depot is no different from any other home remodeling store, except I find their stores are much easier to locate items than other stores. I can be in and out of the store in 10mins because it's easy to navigate. For those who don't shop at Home Depot very often, then your smart phone will be your best friend. Simply search their site for product (make sure you to have the right location) and in return their site will provide the aisle and Bin#. Super Helpful. A store isn't a great store without great employees. I had a question about a product and one of their employees took his time to explain the pros and cons of several different products depending on the nature of or current situation. I am always in awe of how helpful some of these Home Depot employees are when I have questions about anything and everything Home Depot related - installing string lights, fixing things around the house, and this time, painting! Matt (in the painting department) was super helpful in answering all my questions, pointing me to all the materials I needed, the expensive and the cheaper options. As a first time painter, I didn't even know all the questions I needed to ask. I showed him what I was planning to do, and he gave me even more tips...things I would never think of! It seems like every time we come to Home Depot, 4/5 times we'll talk to an employee who has experience in what we're trying to do and great advice with how to do it and what materials we'd need for buy for it. I bought a toilet for $259 and used a $50 gift card I received for my birthday. When I got home I saw that I had received a coupon in the mail (that day) for $25 off for purchases over $150. So I went back to the store (same day) and was told that I could only use the gift card or the $25 off coupon (not both). I said what is the sense of getting Home Depot gift cards if the use is limited? I was told that is the policy and pretty much tough luck. I may not be the best Home Depot customer but now I am the most angry customer they have. I will recommend Menards or Lowes to every person I know. The home Depot has been in my town for awhile. I like the employees and their knowledge of the store and their knowledge with many household building needs. We went to the paint department in search of stain which turned out to be discontinued, Liza helped pick a product and tint it to match exactly what we were working with, her help was much appreciated and i know where i will be coming next time i need custom paint. I love the store so much they're out of the garden section is literally the best in the area so surprising comparison had some local nurseries. That's how great it is. I really like the flower baskets and the succulent section as I was really not expecting to see such a wide variety, it made my day to know that's such a great variety of plants and gardening items are available a short distance from my home. My local Home Depot is generally good, 4 stars. Pricing is high on some items so they lose a star (for example, appliance bulbs are $2.49 instead of $1.49 at all other nearby stores, not a big deal but I typically leaving thinking I'm paying more). Removing another full star because of Home Depot Measurement Services (HDMS) for carpet installation. They advertise $0.49/sqft for installation "including all carpets on display". What they don't tell you is that they charge 25% more than the displayed price for the carpet and 200-400% more for the pad. To make matters worse, the in-store HDMS employee Adrianna was rude about it, "so you assumed it would be the same price and that's our fault?" Yes, because your sign says including the carpets on display. It's on display for much cheaper... if you just say it's $1.50/sqft for installation and charge the displayed price for everything else, you may have me as a customer. read more

Rented a stump grinder from tool rental in Palatine. The "teeth" on the grinding wheel were so rounded all the grinder did is make smoke. It didn't make any chips, just bludgeoned the stump into splinters. Total waste of money ($100 for 4 hours minimum). After trying to make it work thinking user error (not, I've used one before and it worked) I checked the grinder teeth and they were so rounded there was about a 1/4 radius on the "cutting" edge. No way that tool should have been released for rental to anyone. read more

I used to always shop at this store but now I am going to Ace. I went there the other day for dowel rods. 4 different staff members were unable to tell me where they were. Half of them didn't know what they are. This is a hardware store?!?! I eventually walked up and down the aisles until I found them myself. Many of the staff are standing around talking or looking at their phones. The caliber of staff and helpfulness has really decreased over the past few years. Typically I'm making a trip to a home improvement store if I need something special but this location doesn't always have the items I'm looking for. - Unusual traffic pattern makes it more challenging to get in and out of this location. - This location always seems a bit more dusty than other locations to me. If you buy a hot water heater they will give you a number for DRF. Be prepared that i stalling a hot water heater may be rather straightforward- however, DRF will state that their installation starts at $1.100.00. Thats $400 more than the unit itself. Customers need to beware. Find an installer on your own. Total with installation should be $1200 -$1400. read more

Even when we lived farther away, we chose this location for better service and selection. Millwork department was much better than the Vernon Hills location in responding to questions and placing an order. HVAC ducts and fittings typically well stocked so are the plumbing fittings. People in various departments are tradesmen themselves and are very helpful. Finding the right person and from the right department can be a challenge sometimes. Overall a good choice for home improvement needs, and in close vicinity to Menards in case something is not available. read more

However, since Paul (the remaining Mgr.) left about a year ago, the service has really gone down. Living in a house, Home Depot is one of those places that is a necessary evil. I can't imagine how much money I've spent there over the years. While I really prefer to shop local, the Ace Hardware store and other independents have really dried up since Lowes and Home Depot came to town, not to mention the expansion of Menards. But, you can't beat the selection and the prices are not too bad. I would say Menards has more informed staff, who know their stuff about their products and how to use them. You can find people at any Home Depot that know, but you have to really look for them and they typically are already helping someone so you must wait. And although we stopped by this Home Depot three times in one day (8AM, 3PM, 7PM), everyone was uber-helpful and friendly. I have gone to several different Home Depots and other home improvement building supply stores in my life and this one is the best. First of all, their Paint Department is excellent with Paul as manager! As a matter of fact, this department was also excellent when Angelo, Steve, Ginsu and others were working there! Although I really miss them, Paul and others there have carried the torch to make that section as good. When I would go there for paint and matching color assistance, they would go out of there way to help me and I really appreciate it! I use to live in Chicago (N/W side) and would go to the Niles store on Civic Center drive. It was not good to say the least, so it is really a pleasure to shop at this store. Other departments are also good. I purchased a refrigerator earlier this year, while both Sid and the Store Manager Jim really helped me with all aspects of the sale. They were supposed to pick an order I ordered on Monday and have it ready by Wednesday which it was not nor was it ready in Thursday. Friday I finally get it and they pick the wrong door styles and are missing the light fixtures. I don't recommend this Home Depot but if you have to come here ask for Jerry and the pro desk. I'm moving across the country in a few sleeps and this Home Depot was super clutch for mint condition bulk moving supplies. We were pretty set on beat-up boxes that were on their last leg and we'd planned on just using those until it became super apparent that, like most any one who's ever moved anything, we have more stuff than we'd realized. A good rule of thumb when trying to gauge how much stuff you have and how much it's going to cost to move it all is try to envision how many boxes it will take to pack all your stuff, then try to think about how much that might cost, then take both those numbers and multiply them by 10... at least... if you're lucky, that way the final outcome isn't so shocking. We needed to grab some big, sturdy boxes last minute and various other last minute packing moving items and lucky for us they place a super friendly Home Depot representative right at the front of the store to greet and direct you, should you not be familiar with their layout. I was pleasantly surprised to see the moving supplies all right up front just around the corner from the entrance and registers. All the various boxes, mattress bags, tape, tape guns, giant rubber bands, like 7 different kinds of bubble wrap, extra thick sharpie markers for labeling boxes... at that moment I felt the kind of shopping euphoria that's usually only reserved for Target and Nordstrom Rack. Also worth noting, you can rent equipment here to ease your move. Stuff like dollies is mainly what we looked into, but the only bummer is that there's no prices online. We ended up leaving with 4 large boxes, a big roll of bubble tape, a big sharpie and 3 mattress bags for $60... which was kind of a tough pill to swallow knowing it's pretty muc all stuff that will get tossed (recycling, though) in the end, but I needed it all and it's worth it to have the piece of mind knowing that the bottom won't drop out of at least those 4 nice boxes we got from Home Depot while we're moving. read more

This review is for the gardening section of this location. Terrible, I have never been inside a store before where no one knows what they are doing. Every employee hired is not actually knowelgeable about gardening. I approached 3 people and then the third person finally paged someone, when she finally came she was on her walky talky the whole time, I had to repeat my questions several times and she never answered my question. Management at this store has issues or I just came on a bad day. But why do you hire so many people to work at your garden section if they have no clue about gardening? BUYER BEWARE!!! I just spent over $10,000 on Innermost cabinets and appliances for a kitchen update. THEY ordered 2 cabinet incorrectly, leaving me with 2 exposed unfinished surfaces. Their answer: apply a adhesive laminate skin. Despite my contractor's best efforts, IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP! I just spent a ton of money and time to have my project be sub-standard. Integrity??? At one time I was enjoyed going to the Home Depot, that has changed lately however. I remember when every one here was nice & friendly & had lots of product knowledge. Lately I have not had the best experiences here. The staff is either very friendly & very helpful or just the oppostie not really going out of their way to help you. I asked an employee where an item was located & they replied with "Probably in aisle 15 & walked away. I understand everyone has their days where they don't operate at 100% but this kind of disappointed me because I like Home Depot a lot.
