My husband and I always love finding the "Farm to Table" restaurants whenever we travel, and this is one of the best we've tried! We ate brunch: hubby had eggs, local sausage (so good!), home fries and toast. I had the Italian omelette: fontina cheese, fresh tomatoes, pesto and local made Italian sausage: it was delicious! They even had gluten free toast for me (I have celiac). We also shared a blueberry kombucha made in Portland; it was excellent!! Next time, we want to try their dinner! I've been here twice now and I've got to say this is hands down my favorite breakfast...or brunch spot. It's a bit of a drive for me but it's perfect for sitting down, having a cup of coffee (or mimosa), and a good book. Of course bringing some people with you is also perfect. The staff working here are excellent and super friendly. They remembered me the second I came in and asked if I wanted a mimosa. Because I mean whats a breakfast after work without one...or two... The first time I came here I had the lemon poppyseed pancakes with strawberries and a side of sausage. OMG it was like a fluffy pancake met a lemon poppyseed muffin. It was amazing. They change up their pancakes on their menu so I'll be trying another they come up with. My second visit I was feeling like brunch and had the grilled cheese with apple and carmelized leeks. It used to be on Saturday morning I would head into Belfast go to the farmers market and head home. Then last Saturday decided to give the brunch at The Hoot a try, boy am I glad I did. Last week I had the pulled pork over potato pancakes with a couple fried eggs on top. It was simply delicious. This week I had the beef hash over home fries with 2 eggs, once again delicious. My wife had the smoked ham Benedict and couldn't stop raving about it. So one requirement fulfilled, great food. Add to that great service and welcoming owner and it adds up to a most delightful dining experience. So now that my Saturday schedule has changed I'll have to come for dinner. The Monday night fixed menu dinner seems quite appealing. We've been here twice already since we moved here earlier in the year. It's positively amazing. Not only is the food incredible but the restaurant itself is classy-cozy and the staff is warm and kind. We happened upon this place lit up the eve before so we went for brunch. The landscaping, the decor and atmosphere make you feel as though you are in a secret garden. The coffee service with organic sugar and cream in eclectic mugs was homey. The staff were all super welcoming and friendly with menu suggestions as well as local attraction suggestions. The food, we had the brunch sandwich with avocado, pesto, bacon, tomato on homemade focaccia bread and the Mediterranean omelette with Greek olives, artichoke hearts, tomato and feta with homemade bread. It was so good I just wish I had more. We got talking to the owner John and he mentioned that they had restored the building themselves. Judging from the fine details and craftsmanship they put their blood sweat and tears into it. The space is airy, bright but also cozy. The windows opened right up to the garden to give you an excellent breeze. We felt so welcome we moved to the bar for a drink afterwards. I could have sat there all day it was so nice. What a lovely find for brunch. Service was wonderful right from our entrance where we were warmly received by the manager or owner, not sure which. We were directed to the serve yourself coffee area with a choice of eclectic mugs. The menu had great variety, my friend and I both had the cornmeal pancakes with fresh strawberries, a side of their sausage (homemade and exceptionally good), and we each got their specialty drink, a Bellini, which was Prosecco with peach nectar and some fresh lemon juice. Tastes were all right on the mark. My one slight complaint is that the pancakes were more of a thin crepe, 2 per serving. Had I not ordered sausage I might have left hungry. Overall I was very impressed with their food and staff and can't wait to go back for something different. read more

What a remarkable transformation of a building that once housed a bad Mexican restaurant, then sat vacant and deteriorating for years! The owners of the Hoot have turned what I thought sure was a tear-down into an attractive cafe. And the food? Well, I only just visited for the first time, but it was excellent. I came for breakfast and had huevos rancheros with chorizo. It was hard to choose -- all the menu options were tempting. Many of the ingredients are from the owners' farm. We have been coming to The Hoot for several years. We have had brunch, the Saturday meal specials, and the Monday specials. Our last experience was a real turnoff and it seems The Hoot is resting on its laurels. We were on time for dinner (meaning we were early). Table was not ready and 30 minutes later we were seated. Since it was speciality night, we ordered several small plates and one entree (for three people). The small plates were good and served together except one. Then we sat. and waited. and sat. and waited. 45 minutes after the small plates were cleared the main came out with the missing small plate. The main was braised lamb and steak kebabs. The lamb was had no taste and is not like any Middle Eastern food I have ever eaten. The steak kebabs were inedible, tough and rubbery and tasteless. To our server's credit she removed it from the bill. But she never once came over while we were waiting and waiting to tell us there would be delay. The Hoot used to be the bomb, but now it is a bomb. Sorry. read more

I have to rate this place on two levels. First the foood is exceptional, all cooked to order and fresh farm to table wrapped up in an imaginable menu. That explains the high rating. The second rating concerns service and may be a result of the above comments. I live nearby and so have the opportunity of eating at The Hoot on numerous occassions. The service rates only 2 stars from me if that. To say that it is slow is an over statement. The wait time between sitting down and receiving your food is one hour most times and more at numerous times. And the strange thing is they must think that is ok because they NEVER mention or apologise for the delay. last time I went we sat down at 11:30 and emerged close to 1:30. We were in no hurry but had not brought any reading material to pass the long wait. Never go if you are on ANY time schedule. The fact is that in the time that it takes them to serve just one table they could, with more efficienticy serve that table twice which would result in more revenue. More revenue means they will stay in business, something I woulld like very much read more

It's owned by a nice couple, he runs front of the house she's back of the house and it's run like a well oiled machine! Excellent service, delicious food, fabulous atmosphere. This was our third time at the Hoot and we're glad we gave it another shot. The first time, the establishment was very new and the concept was still being worked out. The food was ok and it was good enough to give it another try. The second time we went was a disaster. The person at the counter was very rude and disheveled. We felt unwelcome and left without even eating, vowing to never come back. This time we had a very enjoyable experience. Since our last visit, they now have tableside service on Sunday. The person who took our order and ran the place was amazing. We have seen this waiter before and what a difference a person can make for the dining experience. We ordered the breakfast sandwich and salmon benedict. Both were tasty and even the potatoes were good! Everything ran smoothly and we had a good time. UPDATE: This spot has made major improvements over the last year. They have adapted their business model to be more like a restaurant and less like a disjointed quasi-café. As a guy who often gets 'Mangry' I'm super-pleased to report they have increased their portion sizes without making substantial increases to their own prices! 2017 Review: I'm going to start at 3-stars because I know they're still getting feet under them. Let's start with the positives: The location is good in the summer for those staying in the 'Bayside' neighborhood of Northport, Maine. The building has been restored and renovated after being shuttered since around fall 2013 or '14. The inside feels fresh and clean, the porch looks like it was expanded. The menu seems fine, and reasonably well priced. Less positive or negative: The Hoot falls into a huge group of restaurants that open without having much idea on how it will operate or how the experience will affect customers. The issues start right when you're getting your bill. There is a tip suggestion feature for 18% 20% or 25% (I believe). Wow, wait, is this a café or a restaurant? Do they really know that if it's a cafe then tipping is as arbitrary as a café? There is a counter girl, chefs in the back, and that's it. So why am I being suggested to not just tip but over-tip for my meal? Moving on. The whole cup marked with table numbers is nice because it's sustainable, I think, but they don't have any weight so were fetching ours from the porch bushes in no time. Food arrives, being served by some hard-working and very friendly people. The HIGHLIGHT of the service-related portion of the lunch. We all seemed happy with our food, the entree portions are neither skimpy nor oversized but there wasn't a side of anything, I was told that on the menu my sandwich would come popcorn, which I wouldn't have been jazzed for anyways, but it didn't have that. No pickle? Slaw? Nada? Add .75¢ to prices if you need to make your plates less sparse, the Bayside and most local customers aren't going to gripe. In summation, The Hoot needs to get a hydraulic jackhammer for the old sidewalk to nowhere out front. Drop the high tip suggestions for a place that requires at least two customer trips from the table (I did 4) to attend to themselves per visit. Possibly rethink the bussing station location as it's unidentified partially toward the back. Figure out the plating process for each thing on their menu. Get real table placards that don't fly away -- get jazzed for what can be a successful summer with some small and mostly cheap changes!! Did you do a 'soft opening'? Color me impressed! We had a great dinner last night with food that one cannot find in local restaurants easily. It was a fantastic change of pace. The lamb kabobs were winners for the small plates that we had to eat. I had the Arugula Papardelle, which was so delicious with tender chicken. My husband had the Beef Panang Curry and he almost licked the bowl clean. Our other dinner companion had the lamb shank, which you should have if you are REALLY hungry as it was enormous and amazing. What impressed me most was Jon, the owner, calling us over the register right before we left to give us a gift certificate for not having biscuits for their biscuit and gravy breakfast my husband ordered there over a month ago! After listening to our neighbors rave about the food, we stopped in for brunch before the Maine Weinerfest in Belfast (130 dachshunds on parade!). Well, the neighbors weren't wrong. I tried the mashed potato cakes with poached eggs, and the combination of crispy potato, runny yolk, and sautéed leeks and chard was to die for. My husband's lemon ricotta pancakes were fluffy, and the sausage some of the best I've ever had. Also, a self-serve coffee bar helps keep the cup warm and full. It took a while to get the food after ordering, so don't be in a rush. Friendly staff. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We'll definitely be back. read more

I realize that this is summer and staffing issues are a problem all over, but didn't really seem like any one in this spot was trying that hard to make diners have a better experience, granted it was very hot in the place and many Maine spots don't have air conditioning. The owner/manager seemed glued to the restaurant host stand monitoring a screen rather than actually moving about the place to see if people were ok, enjoying things or offering help? The value overall wasn't good, 14 dollars for a tiny bowl of chips with a single scoop of guacamole and a few tiny scoops of varietal salsas? The portion size for the pork carnitas was embarrassing for almost 30 bucks a pop, server was trying to make the best of things by covering for a kitchen that clearly wasn't putting out food like you need to in these circumstances. Usually don't post any type of reviews, but in this case I would definitely recommend avoiding the Hoot in the summer for Mexican night, entire experience was not up to par and a let down, should have done more research and come to this spot for brunch instead read more

we stayed at the Duck Trap Motel on our road trip and the owner recommended this place. So glad we stopped here. Very cute, comfy, cozy restaurant. The owners were very nice and service was great. The food was AMAZING!! I liked how you helped yourself to coffee with a variety of mugs to choose from. I had the North African Green Shakshuka (I think that is how it is spelled). Never had African food before and it sounded interesting. The spices and flavors were just what I wanted. Absolutely delicious! My friend had the salmon eggs benedict which he said was very tasty. Both dishes came with potatoes and I thought they were some of the best potatoes ever. Then my friend wanted to split the Apple Crisp Pancakes. OH MY WORD - that was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten anywhere. So incredible!
