I have liked going to this restaurant on my way into downtown Denver from Littleton. I always liked the Urban feel and location at a corner on Broadway. When we walked up this past weekend I was wondering if it was still open because all the shades were down, but then I could vaguely see the lights on inside as I got closer. We got seated and the vibe was so different. I could see one of the shades ruffled up at the floor and all the other shades were down. It was early evening. Because I enjoy people watching I walked over to raise the shade by our StreetSide table. I tried a few times and the shade kept falling slowly each time I raised it. Then I noticed a latch on the side of the window and I figured the chain needed to be latched. As i was looking at it, the host came over. She sharply asked what I was doing. I calmly said I was trying to raise the shade so I could see the view, in a friendly tone. She snapped back that the shades were old and decrepit and didn't work. Then she sharply said "Don't touch them!" and walked away. I was surprised but didn't let her ruin my time with my husband, I did ask my husband if he thought she would have used the same tone with him if he had been the one involved and he said, no. I wondered why she felt she had permission to approach me with such a tone (because I am a woman, over 50?). I will not be treated in such a manor and sadly won't be back. read more

Great! I like the reviewer that described this restaurant as "homey yet trendy," that's pretty spot on. Also, the food and drinks are delicious. Wonderful staff, too. Everything I tried was amazing, even the aioli that came with the artichoke fritters, & I am not an aioli fan. The fritters, which I expected to be kind of a breaded patty with minced artichoke, maybe some garlic, were simply artichoke pieces like you'd buy in a can, but fried. 'From a can' isn't a put down; frying them is a great twist, and they were yummy! I didn't know what to order so went with something I normally wouldn't get excited about, the breakfast burrito, a balanced mess of textures and flavors. I definitely ended up eating more than I meant to. The brat burger my friend ordered was gone in minutes, and the accompanying sweet potato fries were awesome, the perfect size to allow both softness and crispness. Later the next day, I had their bread pudding- no complaints about that either. On a Saturday morning (11:00), there was no wait for brunch. This was a huge plus for me, as it's hard to find places without huge lines. It was very busy but is also a large place. Very reasonably priced. I was expecting to pay more than I did. My favorite aspect of The Hornet was the drink selection. Craft cocktails call my name, & this place had tons. The hibiscus mojito was really good, but tasted almost like a regular mojito. Had a pretty great dinner here last night! We ordered the mushroom ravioli and the turkey brie panini, both to split. The ravioli was fantastic!! GET the black pepper semi sauce. It's fantastic. The panini was also solid. The tomato bisque was a little heavy on the cream, but still a perfect pair with the panini. Service was fast, though nothing special. The Hornet has a really fun atmosphere and vibe. They are located in the historic Baker neighborhood and serves as a nice middle ground for people coming from different areas of Denver. They have a small parking lot in the rear, but it's mostly street parking around there. They have an awesome happy hour which runs from 4-7... $3 off all appetizers, $4 draft beers and draft wines. Even when it's not HH, the prices for food and drinks is very reasonable. I ordered the Rodeo BBQ burger and it was delicious! I don't normally order burgers at restaurants- I think I'm what people would call, "just a simple gal" because I usually just head over to the closest In N Out or Shake Shack to get my burger fix, but today was a different day! This burger was a big patty cooked to perfection, bacon, a thick slice of melted cheddar cheese, crispy delicious fried onion ring, lettuce and tomato. I also had a taste of their Artichoke Heart Fritters and those were delicious!! Squeeze the lemon over the fried/crisped fritters then dip those things in their house made cayenne aioli and you got yourself the perfect bite. Everything that was ordered from my table looked amazing.. the salads, to the fish and chips, to the cheese & potato pierogis. All of them looked phenomenal and my friends loved their meals. Absolutely horrible. I have eaten at The Hornet many years ago and just recently re-visited. I ordered the "Honey Stung Chicken" which I enjoyed in the past. It was so bad that I cannot even explain - a flattened out chicken breast with leathery breading. In addition my boyfriend ordered the fish and chips which were soggy. Not only was the meal horrible, and so unbelievably over priced $20.00 for the chicken and $18.00 for the Fish and Chips, but I am shocked that the restaurant remained open while just an hour or two earlier a mass shooting occurred a few business doors down. I honestly do not mind paying these prices for a decent meal, but I regret not asking the server to return the food to the kitchen and not paying for the meal. read more

We got the fried calamari as an appetizer, which was really good, it also came with roasted onion slices which were awesome, and a bunch of other little surprises in there too - some french fries and capers - not sure if it was intentional or by accident but we liked the blend. For entrees I got the pulled pork sandwich which was awesome, perfect BBQ sauce ratio and the sweet potato fries which were also really good. One of my friend's got the Cubano which she said was good but wished it had a little more cheese, another friend got the buffalo chicken wrap which he said was good, but could have used a little bit more buffalo sauce, and my boyfriend got the chicken nachos which were a large portion and tasty! The good: a FANTASTIC mimosa. For just three dollars, no less. The bad: all my potatoes were drenched i man syrup from the French toast. I'm by no means a food can't touch kind of person but after the sweetness of the banana bread pudding I was feast for some salty home fries. The mulemosa (vodka, ginger beer, champagne and oj) was just doing too much, maybe it just wasn't to my taste though. Moreover the visit was tainted by the wait. Ordered the gangster wrap. See in the picture where it states that the wrap is gluten free? Not "gluten free options available" or "gluten free is additional", just lists the item as gluten free. Awesome I think, let's do it! I get the wrap. It's most certainly in a flour tortilla. I call the restaurant. I ask what kind of gluten free tortilla is on the gangster wrap. "Oh gluten free is just an OPTION with that wrap" the gal on the other end of the line says. But the description clearly states "gluten free" I say, Confused and with growing irritation. "Riiiiight," she says but it's an OPTION. She lists all the ways you can get this wrap GF. I retort that I didn't see those listed on grub hub. "Oh they are definitely there", she says, "I use grub hub all the time." In step with my growing frustration, her tone is increasingly deflecting the issue back to me. I sarcastically tell her I'm sure it was my fault and hang up. As you can see from the photo, clearly listed as gluten free. And no obvious "make a gluten free choice" listed until you scroll, which isn't something I typically have to do when I order from grub hub. So rather than make a long time customer, hipster girl on the other end of the line got to be right and I've wasted my money on food I can't eat. Score for Hornet! Quite the stinger. read more

The waitress was very perfunctory and not at all friendly although the service was good. I had beef shortribs. They were tasty and tender but the potatoes au graten were terrible. They tasted old and mushy. The curry chicken lettuce wrap was awful. It was nothing more than canned chicken soup with a little curry in it that you pour over the lettuce. This was my first time here and I will he back. I had the vegetarian mac and cheese and I kid you not it was the best mac and cheese I've ever tasted! The chives added some delicious flavor along with the breadcrumbs. The cheese itself was so good. It was creamy and cheesy. After attempting to visit Denver Biscuit Company and declining to stick around for the 1.5 hour wait, The Hornet was a logical next choice. Despite it being a fairly busy Sunday, my friend and I found a table for two without having to wait. We started out with the homemade blueberry pop tart ($3) from nearby Sugar Bake Shop, which was served warm with whipped cream and very tasty. My friend and I split the Dixie Chicken ($12) and Gigunda Breakfast Burrito ($12) which was more than enough food for two people. My only complaint is that the burrito wasn't as hot as it could have been. Overall both entrees were flavorful and filling, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. We mentioned to the waitress that we were going to split the entrees, and she brought them out already split for us which was very thoughtful and convenient. read more

Ambience - Fun, hip, modern. Great location on the corner on Broadway St in Denver. A nice big space that can easily accommodate large groups. Drinks - $2 blood Mary Bar - need I say more? Best brunch drink deal I've ever had. Period. For $2, you get a tall glass of vodka and ice and get to walk up to their make-your-own-blood-Mary-bar and fill your drink with all the fixins! Food - For appetizers we got fried artichokes hearts (yum!) and a gluten-free pupusa which were great! For my entree I got the Dixie chicken which was a wonderful play on chicken and biscuits. The chicken was not overly breaded and had a nice sweet honey glaze to it, with a fresh big biscuit, potatoes, and two eggs over easy. My friends got huge, naked, breakfast burritos which were also well-received. Value - Excellent. My bill was only $17! The only critique I would give this place is the wait time but I did go with a big group and in general most good brunch spots in Denver have a wait so I didn't mind! This is what I consider a "hipster" joint. It's not downtown, but still in the city enough that you can start your party here and continue on without needing a ride anywhere. We had a larger party here on a Tuesday evening and when we got there around 6 the restaurant was nearly empty. We got sat in the back of the restaurant and we had our own room as long as we stayed. The waitresses were attentive, the food came out right and everything was prompt. Small plates dominate happy hour (although, I don't think they're small!) and their happy hour is one to beat (they boast 2 happy hours, but seeing as how the other starts at 11pm; I've never made it that far). Their small plates and regular menu have a great selection and personally I love the fish tacos and lettuce wraps. I've come here for happy hour with coworkers and sat alone at the bar. The staff have always made it a pleasant experience! Parking can be a bit of a pain, depending on where you're coming from.
