Just had dinner here Saturday night. Food wasn't bad, our waitress was great and the manager on that night very nice. Unfortunately, while dinning here i was disrespected by a waitress that works there and led to my 1 star review. ... I had my waitress to turn on a playoff hockey game on a the TV next to my table. She said as long as no one was watching what was on she would change it. She got the ok from the bartender and turned it on for me. 10 minutes later another waitress (short blonde hair didn't catch her name) turned my game off for a pre game show or about the nuggets (not even the nuggets game). When I told her that game was on as per a request I made. She said "well another table wanted to watch this so your going to have to move to another table." We were mid meal but, did it anyway. She didn't apologize and in fact I missed a goal and she laughs and said you "it's all good" My waitress seemed very upset we're treated this way but, the damage was done and my meal was ruined. 15 min later the same short haired waitress shut the hockey game off the TV she had moved me near because, the same table she helped wanted earlier wanted everyone at the table that requested to shut the hockey game off to watch this pre game show at the second tv I was watching. She and the other table laughed at me after I complained. Then with so lame excuse she ignored my request and completely shut the game off all the TVs in the bar. I spoke to the manager after being treated like this to find out she lied to her manager about what happened. The manager said she will be disciplined. The damage was done and I will not be running her nor recommending this restaurant to anyone. Unfortunately, I probably would have stayed and enjoyed more drinks and food but, this changing all the TVs on me made me leave and take my business elsewhere. Not sure if management will read this review but, I felt incredibly disrespected by this woman. After coming to the Hornet on and off over the years, I've decided it's really the atmosphere and location that holds such great appeal. Will I get ousted for not loving the Hornet? I mean, there's definite like going on. Just not full-blown attraction. It's always the first place I suggest when I need to grab a bite before (or after) catching a flick at the Mayan, mostly for convenience. But the food has never blown me away. Except for the lobster mac and cheese - that's a five star, hands down. Salads? Eh. Cubano? Meh (you should know better, anyway). Steak skewers? Ok. Sweet potato fries? Bliss. First a disclaimer: We ate at 6:00pm on a Monday night. Laura was our server and she was exceptional. Friendly of course but she knew the menu and the beer list by taste. We were greeted and seated quickly, quietly and professionally. We chose the pierogi as an appetizer. Just the perfect dish for a cold winter evening. Served with a light buttery broth it was Polish kreplach! I had a Cobb salad and it was really good and tasty and yet it did not resemble any Cobb salad I had ever seen before. The service was exceptional. The food was tasty and well presented all in all it was an enjoyable evening made even better by the knowledge and professionalism of our server. Super busy! Service can be a little slow but over all, very friendly. We came in around 12:30 yesterday with a party of 5 and sat down around 1:00. I ordered off the brunch menu and had the Pupusas which were corn cakes with black beans, green chile, eggs, and cheese. It was pretty good. Hubs had the burrito which lacked the bacon it was supposed to have but our server brought him a side of it. My SIL had the french toast and really liked it. My nieces ordered some stuff off the kids menu and 2 homemade pop tarts. The pop tarts were good! The frosting is a bit sweet but they were served warm and I felt transported back to my childhood. I wish they came in more flavors than just blueberry! Cheers for being very gluten free friendly and vegetarian friendly as well. I think the big draw here for brunch is their $2 bloody marys- I mean, wouldn't that get you in the door too?? Holy lord.....my belly is still happy from my dinner here last night! So I've been in Denver for over a year now but have never ventured onto Broadway to check out any of the establishments there. After checking out another restaurant with a wait that was too long, we walked over to The Hornet and game was on. Naturally with it being Friday night there was a wait and while they told us about 30 minutes since we had a party of six, it was a little larger but they were really cool and open about letting us know where we were on the list. All kinds of people were in this place--hipsters, older folk, yuppies and an odd number of tall people which left me looking up the entire time. This place was packed though--barely any room at the bar or in general to just stand around so we parked ourselves in the front right by the hostess stand and waited. They had some pretty sweet drink specials so took advantage of that while waiting and it lessened the blow of our stomachs growling. We finally sat down and this place is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside which surprised me. Everything on their newly revamped menu looked amazing. I love that their selection isn't too big but instead offer a few appetizers, entrees and a whole lotta wraps, sandwiches and burgers. We started with the fried artichokes and while I've never heard of such thing, paired up with the spicy dipping sauce it was served with, it was mouthgasm worthy. We got our food shortly after and I was in hog heaven--I got the Parisian burger. Again, holy lord. The burger was on the smaller side which I dig because I wanted a burger but didn't want a beef baby sitting in my stomach but it was piled high with crispy prosciutto, brie, tomato, lettuce and onion along with piping hot fries. The Hornet is a great neighborhood pub, with nice staff, good food, and a nice selection of drinks. They have a fantastic happy hour! Three dollar drafts, it might be 3.50$. We have had the fries, the Thai chicken wraps, and the fish taco. Everything has been tasty. The fish taco was my least favorite, everything tasted good. It was just the ratio between the protein and all the toppings was overwhelming, and made the fish soggy. It is still good. Happy hours 4-6, and late night I would have to look that up. I have to credit my Mom for getting me in the door of the Hornet. She was running some errands in the neighborhood, and asked if I wanted to meet her for a cocktail and some hors d'oeuvres. The Hornet is a perfect place to meet up and grab a really good happy hour. Definitely a fan! Had lunch here with a co-worker and really enjoyed it. The Hornet reminds me of my favorite hipster diner at home - it's tasty, reasonably priced, full of diverse characters and skinny jeans. I had the California Turkey burger which was topped with avocados, bacon and blue cheese. The patty itself was ok but with the toppings it was great - I liked this better than my burger at the Cherry Cricket. And the homemade Au Gratin potatoes - oh hell yes! My one nitpick is an over reliance on "southwest seasoning" as it was sprinkled on or used in everything I ate. Kind of too much of a good thing.... My experience here was not great. My foodie qi must had been totally off on Sunday! I ordered a mojito which I had to return and go with a Coke. The waitress did say it was a new mixologist - better start practicing. Anyone else ever order the Cubano? What's up with the cibatta bread? way too much bread (and dense) for this sandwhich. I took off the top and ate it like bruschetta. The pork had excellent flavors; I know The Hornet put their own twist on it, but a little sauce would go a long way. My fries were not crispy. It seemed as if they were made earlier and reheated in a microwave. It was just bad all around for me! I will definitely give it another try and maybe order some less risky. I don't think it's going to take too long before The Hornet makes its way up to 4 stars from me. Overall, I enjoyed the place, and they have a great happy hour. Right now, it's A-OK. We stopped in on the Saturday before Halloween - wow, was the location perfect for some costume watching! Half the folks inside were dressed up, and we were also treated to the imaginative threads on hundreds of folks making their way down Broadway. As far as the restaurant goes, my friend ordered the Polish Pierogis, which she really enjoyed. We later shared the bacon brie homefries. Unfortunately, those came out way overcooked, partially burned, and it was difficult to pick out the different flavors (and neither bacon or brie are subtle flavors). The horseradish sour cream it was served with was great, though. If it had been cooked properly, I think this would be a very tasty dish. Happy hour is from 3pm - 6pm, and draught beers are only $3. Not bad at all - add to that, they extended the happy hour for Colorado beers, so my Odell's IPA was $3 for the whole time I was there. They were pretty packed when we were in, but hadn't done a great job of dividing up tables. Our server was frequently MIA for long periods of time, and a couple times we had to ask others to track her down. She was always apologetic, saying she'd been stuck with a large group in another room. Overall, it's a fun, reasonably priced place with some fun items on the menu. I informally rate new lunch restaurants using a Reuben as my standard. The Hornet's Reuben is the BEST I've ever had, with the spicy bacon sauerkraut and Russian dressing setting it apart from the masses. Mrs. Johnny rated her Avocado Toast the BEST she's ever had. The large helping of salmon and the olive caper tapenade distinguished it from other AT. The Grilled Caesar salad with chicken was our granddaughter's excellent choice. Tasty and terrific presentation! Outstanding fare all around. But wait, it was a birthday celebration. We were comped with incredibly delicious fresh Pallisade peach cobblers. Don't let the Broadway address worry you. There are plenty of quality dining establishments and potential patrons enjoying the neighborhood. Apparently this is the place to be after a show at Dangerous Theatre. Although, I can't understand why. What was great was that at 9pm or so when we got there, the kitchen was still open and we got a huge table for 8 right away. Plus, they had something on their menu called "The Clogger" which was a massive burger with bacon, cheese & a fried egg on it. Nice! Well, at least it was, until they brought it by the table and had put the egg on the top side that you flip onto the burger and hadn't cooked the egg much. Plus, it was hidden by a giant lettuce leaf (maybe it's just me, but if you're going to eat a big greasy burger, the salad can go on the side) so that when I flipped that top bun down onto my burger, I got egg all over myself. It was so runny that it filled the reservoir of the plate and dripped off the edge. Not cool! So, there I was with egg on my shirt, boo! and glance up to see that there was a beer o' the day special. Well, damn, if the server had got around to mentioning that, I would have ordered that. It was a Sierra Nevada that wasn't even listed on the draft menu. Boo II! I have to admit that the bit of the burger that was not running down my shirt was quite good. The shoestring fries weren't great, but I'm not a shoestring person. I heard good things around the table about the lobster mac'n'cheese & the salads. Then, the band set up and blew us completely out of the restaurant. It was inordinately loud and having the band right in the middle of the restaurant area eliminated our ability to conversate, so we just left. Too bad, they definitely lost some business. We tend to sit and drink and eat for quite a while. I will probably be back here after another show, but I will be extremely careful about what I order next time and will probably leave when the music starts, since it is even crazy loud in the far back corner. read more

I am torn between 3 and 4 stars. I am definitely a fan. I roll into the Hornet almost weekly. The past 3 weeks I have had brunch there every weekend. The food is good. Not spectacular but good. The odd thing about the Hornet is the consistency of energy. There is always a customer buzz, partially because it's always so crowded, but the service is inconsistent. This is the first time we have ever been to Denver and decided to stop here for dinner. It was delicious! Service and Atmosphere: The service was great. Our server was extremely friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. Food: I got the Honey Stung Fried Chicken and it was so good. I also got a cup of Tomato Basil Soup, which did not disappoint. My favorite part of the whole meal, though, was the Southern Bean Succotash. It had a fantastic flavor, and I kept telling my boyfriend how awesome it was. My boyfriend got the Buffalo Burger with an egg and he loved it. He said the fries were great too. Came here for brunch on vacation for the second time and I loved it just the same! I ordered the dirty chick and the budget bloody Mary's (only $3!!!) and really loved it. The honey cayenne flavor of the chicken is delicious. I replaced my home fries with spuds au gratin and am so glad I did! I really like the Hornet! I've been on several occasions for dinner and brunch. I went last night and met with friends for Happy Hour. They have a really great Happy Hour (if you can get there by 6PM). The snack/noshing situation on their HH is really good, interesting takes on bar food and you can definitely get enough food with a few appetizers to go around the table. Well, I just don't know. I hear rave things about The Hornet and I really love the atmosphere in here, breezy, laid-back bustle at weekday lunchtimes, plugged-in electric buzz on weekend nights, but the food is just so.....weird. There's something off in everything that I've ordered. I fully admit that I walked in the first time with extremely high expectations about Lobster Mac N' Cheese, an error motivated by the very consonants of the name - llllllobbbbssssstttttterrrrr Mac NNNNNN Cheese, but when the server brought it to my table I found myself facing a pool of grease, an exhausting hunt for meager lobster, and enough salt for a horse. We hit this restaurant based on ease of access after a full day of the lugging, shoving, pulling, climbing and racing that accompanies helping a good friend move, and I was positively starving by the time we sat down, but I just couldn't stomach eating too much of this concoction. I was also surprised that a $16 dinner entree would come with no sides; I would have much more preferred a quarter of the heavy pasta with some veggie options. Not wanting to dismiss an institution based solely on one dish, I went back for lunch, thinking that perhaps the kitchen was overwhelmed or understaffed during the first visit. This time I ordered the Turkey Brie Panini. I was expecting Turkey meat, but what I got was Turkey Meat Product, slices of deli meat and barely a sliver of brie to be found. This time the food did come with sides, a "tomato basil soup dip" which is a clever way of giving you three tablespoons of tomato soup instead of a cup, and a Cole slaw which was dressed in vinegar and some entirely mysterious dried herb (oregano? tarragon? why?). It's really a shame. I think The Hornet has the advantage of resting on some extensive laurels, but I believe I'll move on. Kombucha on tap is a great idea. Every server in the place is attentive and friendly. I understand their drinks are virtually magic potions. I'd love it if the food was on par. read more

The Hornet is a nice little restaurant / bar off Broadway. They have a back patio and a two pool tables (although one was out of order). Pretty fun atmosphere and the layout is pretty nice. Their regular menu is made up of mainly sandwiches and a handful of entrees, although I think it's a bit overpriced for what you get ($10 plus on most sandwiches). But, that's why I go during happy hour. Food: On the downside The Hornet offers just three tapas options for their happy hour - a little disappointing. Luckily, I like almost everything, so I ordered the Chicken Pesto Pizza and the Crab Cakes. The pizza was not bad... it was about six inches and tasted decent, nothing spectacular. Crab cakes were a pretty similar story, you get two. Now I know The Hornet has good food, because I've eaten there before. So suggest ordering off the regular menu. Drinks: They have great options for drinks with lots of good beers on Draft. I was drinking 90 Shilling (See Photo). During happy hour, good drafts typically go for $3.50 or you can get a bottle for $2.50. You can also order a plethora of other drinks at happy hour prices and they usually have daily specials as well. My recommendation: check out the hornet for lunch or dinner. Their happy hour is just okay, nothing really that stands out. Although I used to frequent their late night happy hour long ago. During late night hh they offer a $5 food menu that used to be awesome. I can't speak for it now, because I think they've changed the menu a bit. The other downside is they shortened the time the offer it, so it doesn't start till 11pm and I believe their kitchen closes at Midnight. read more

We go to The Hornet before we hit The Mayan (the best independent movie theatre aka art house in Denver) cause it's a chill atmosphere and the food is good. I'm an appetizer & drinks kind of girl and the Artichoke Spinach Dip is a staple in my diet. It's yum here, but the homemade potato chips are just so good that sometimes I hunt for a good movie to go to just so we can swing by The Hornet first. Always lots of young people who seem to be at the bar looking to meet people so if you're single it may not be a bad place to go. I've definitely gotten 'the eye' a few times. I really appreciate a business that really does care enough about their customers that they read reviews, take action, and respond to them. The Hornet did just that with me. I was assured that my previous experience was not typical of The Hornet experience. So here I am today - in the restaurant as I type this review and I have to say that especially for Happy Hour, you can find the value in their menu. They have a dozen or so Happy Hour items ranging from pork tacos to falafel to nachos - all of which are $2-5. Drafts, House Wine, and Well drinks are only $3. This is every day from 3-6. I tried the homemade popcorn chicken which doesn't appear to be on their regular menu - they were addictive and I ate them all. I also got an order of nachos which weren't bad either. Based on this experience, I'm more than likely to stop back in, if nothing else, for the Happy Hour. read more

I had lunch here yesterday with a business associate; totally scored with a parking spot right at the corner; which was especially handy with the arctic temps we've been having. There were few people, which I expect is a rare thing. The server was super friendly and did a great job of dealing taking care of us. I had a pork sandwich, which was good, although seemed a little light on pork. On the other hand, I didn't have to deal with the post-lunch food-coma that occurs after eating an overly-generous meal.
