Did a quick day trip to Guerneville to do some River floating and stumbled across this food truck before leaving. I saw that it had some good ratings on Yelp and wanted to try for myself. Service was friendly, there were some makeshift parking spot situations, and a couple of tables to sit at. It's located right next to a mini golf place. I got the The Maui Wowie Sandwich, pulled pork (16) Pineapple, pickled onions, fresh lettuce, homemade peach BBQ sauce and mayo on a toasted brioche bun and added a potato salad (3). The pulled pork sandwich was great, but not a super big fan of the potato salad. Overall, a good meal, wish the portion was a bit bigger, but a good way to end the day! read more

I absolutely love everything about this spot! It's such a gem. The couple running it put big love into each of their recipes and I wish they would bottle that barbecue sauce! The potato salad is special too. I've had everything but recently I had their peach barbecue rubbed ribs with housmade coleslaw which was also super fresh and tangy and it was divine. It's also at this old mini golf spot that was around since the 70s. It kind of psychedelic and trippy. They have a little canopy inside you can eat at and have a beverage. I am on the fence about the Hot Box BBQ. Here's why. A small food truck in Guernerville, CA, located next to the mini golf course, Hot Box BBQ is serving mainly pulled pork and chicken in sandwich-style entrees. The ambiance isn't great. There are some picnic tables right next to the road, and the Pee Wee mini golf joint can be loud, and it's quite messy. Not an ideal place to enjoy a meal. During our vacation (we stayed in the neighborhood), I walked over to pick up dinner for the family. First of all, this place isn't cheap. Prices are about what you would pay at a full-service restaurant. After ordering two sandwiches, a salad, and two kids' hot dogs, the gentleman running the truck quoted me 10 minutes. The wait time was far longer than 10 minutes. I didn't get an exact timing, but it was at least double. I got our food home, and it was hot, fresh, and pretty tasty. The smoked tofu was good in the Hawaiian-style sandwich. The chicken was ok, but not what I would call top-tier smoked BBQ food. I wish I had ordered the pulled pork to see if it was any better. The portion sizes were decent for the price. If you like BBQ-style food, the Hot Box may be worth trying if you're visiting the area. However, this isn't really BBQ. They do smoke the meats in a small propane smoker outside the truck, but it's not what you'd really get at a real BBQ joint. Honestly, I will probably skip this spot next time I'm in Guerneville, but that's not to say it's not worth a try at all. read more

I really like when places specialize doing one thing very well. Volcano Pulled Pork: I mentioned that I like hot food, but only when the spiciness is designed to complement all the flavors. So like Szechuan, which is inherently spicy, instead of drowning mediocre chow mein in sriracha. I was assured that this sandwich was strategically crafted. And it was! The sweet spicy tang was perfect against the rich unctuous pork. Loved the crunchy onion bits against the soft bun. Really top notch! So impressive for a food truck. Hands down the best pulled pork sandwich. I had the Volcano sandwich for lunch and came back a few hours later for dinner because I couldn't stop thinking about it. It And the potato salad....I wish I bought a bucket of it. Worth the $3 switch. When we went on a Monday, there was one man operating the whole truck. I had the Vietnam, Nom, Nom sandwich with the pulled pork. I also upgraded to a side of coleslaw, $3. The coleslaw was a little disappointing, it was just your typical coleslaw. They advertise it as homemade, which I'm sure it is, but there's nothing special about it. The sandwich, on the other hand, was amazing! There was plenty of meat and lots of Vietnamese dressing and veggies on the sandwich. If you've ever had a bàhn mì, Vietnamese sandwich, this is what it was. The only thing I would change, is the bun. It was served on a brioche bun, but these types of sandwiches are usually served on a French roll. In addition to that, brioche buns are very sweet. Not necessarily the best choice of bread when making a sandwich. If you don't upgrade to the coleslaw or potato salad, you get potato chips as a side. I will be returning to this place again, I have to try some of the other sandwiches on the menu, Next time, no coleslaw. I'll try to take salad, that's homemade too. Tried this food truck tonight at crooked goat outdoor party, prices are reasonable. I chose the classic chicken, side was slaw. Hubby chose the Maui wowie pork sandwich, potato salad. All was pretty good until mid sandwich I thought I hit a chicken bone ,NOPE a piece of metal ,everyone agreed to let them know .they words were" um sorry." Awhile back we had their ribs. I don't believe they have them all the time. But, they were delicious! And when they have them they sell out fast. Anyway, we had a whole rack, & they were so good. My hubby sometimes stops for a sandwich on the way to work. He loves them, especially the Volcano. And he says the shredded pork or chicken are both the bomb! The flavors just burst with goodness! I don't even have adequate words to describe the excellence of preparation and flavor. We had ribs and a pulled pork sandwich and more... and were blown away with each bite. After eating ribs my whole life and all over the world it is no exaggeration to say this was an experience I haven't had since my father made them for me. He knew not to over-season or drown them in some too-sweet or too whatever else chefs do to make their marks on the culinary community. I know tastes vary and I respect that, but if you are someone who knows and loves the perfect flavor of pork you will love how this place perfectly balances that flavor with perfect seasoning that enhances, not one that wipes out the natural flavors. SO incredibly rude! Today my 10 year old son politely asked for a Hot Box BBQ sandwich. This is up on their menu board with a very enticing photo. The young woman behind the counter VERY rudely snapped "That is not actually a sandwich and I'll be with you in a minute". Now maybe she gets this question all the time and it annoys her, BUT it's a very easy mistake to make BECAUSE they have a pic up on the menu. So, if they don't want that request MOVE the picture OFF the menu. Don't snap your customers head off. I could not believe how rudely she responded to him. We walked away and will never go back again and would highly recommend you steer clear. But it was hard to enjoy the meat with the quart of barbecue sauce dumped on top. Way too much messy, drippy sauce and it's not that good. My side dish was coleslaw. Yuck! A wet mayonnaise-y mess. Very unappetizing and almost gross. The day I went (probably everyday) the refrigerator was "not very cold" which meant he serves warm soft drinks with a "get over it" attitude.
