    The room
    Diana B.

My husband and I decided to stay at northern lights because the pictures and the majority of the reviews were so nice. Everything was kind of good at first. But one day we decided to use the tub, which was included in our room, five minutes later Diane, the owner of the place was knocking the door and yelling at us saying: you cannot use the tub several times, we had to get out of the tub as fast as we could to open the door, she told us that we cannot use the tub because it wasn't included with the room (??) but that was her fault not telling us before. At first we thought : how come the tub which is inside of the bathroom, which's inside of the room for what we paid more than 2000 dlls it's not for us to use?? But then she apologized saying was her fault and we didn't give it so much importance . Minutes later we recivied a text from our bank saying that Northern lights tried to charge us the whole amount again(2150 dlls) two times. Then Diane came to us again asking for the credit card zip code and I told her that we already paid her. Then she told us that we have to pay for a electrician because when we used the tub the water leaked and damaged some lights of the house, our answer was no, it was not our fault, she never told us not to use the jacuzzi, she has pictures of the jacuzzi with the bathroom in all the websites, and if a room comes with a bathroom and the bathroom has a tub, should we don't use it? She became irrational and start to yelling, so my husband and I decided to leave even when we had 4 nights left that we already paid. She did absolutely nothing, we call Expedia and they talk to her but she said she has a no refund policy, very convenient. Finally we ended in another hotel better located, not that fancy but we were treated with the respect that any person deserve . This is false advertising and it's actually illegal. Finally and not less important I want to say that we are a marriage who love to travel every time we can because of the jobs, we've been in many places around the world, small hotels, big ones, Airbnb's and we never had such experience with a host. I know Diane is going to write a response in here, no problem, she knows what I am telling here it's true, I have the screenshots of our conversation. It's a shame because we liked the place, but we have to stay in a place where we feel respected.

Great venue for events like dinners, launch parties, photo shoots...in a historic well maintained Harlem brownstone.

Neighborhood at night is a little sketchy but you are in center of Harlem. I felt safe but at night not very safe. I was ok with that but I know some people may not be. Inside is cozy and homey, the hosts are nice but more is expected from a room that is over $200/night We stayed for 6 days and not once did cleaning service come through even though they told us at check in that they come through every 4-5 days. The AC unit is ok but the air flow in the room is poor and there is no circulation to the loft where the 2nd bed is located. Thankfully it was early June and not too hot. The middle of summer would have been miserable. The downstairs can be ice box(ask for blankets) but the loft is too hot to sleep. By the way there is a large opening where the AC unit was installed so it will get very hot without AC on. The fact that they provide the cheapest single ply TP seems to represent the management's attitude. Provide the bare minimum. Paying $200 + night and not spend the extra $1 for a decent roll of TP.

The room is small but cozy and perfect for a couple. The shared bathrooms are very clean and constantly maintained. This is the authentic NYC experience: either pay five times the price for the same type of room near Times Square, or spend around $100 here and take a $20 Uber to Times Square. Plus, you'll have extra money to enjoy dining out. This isn't just about getting value for your money--it's about smart choices. I will definitely be coming back here every time I visit NYC in the future.

We booked The Central Park Hotel via Travelocity. We soon discovered this "hotel" wasn't really a…read morehotel at all. It was more so an old brownstone renting out rooms. There is no elevator and we were placed on the third floor. This wouldn't be a problem if someone helped us with our bags, but no one did, or even offer to help. My grandma has a bone disease and I feared if she carried things and took the three flights there is a higher risk of her falling and breaking a bone. I told two different people there this information two times and no one cared. They said the "hotel" was advertised as not having an elevator (it was hidden in fine print on Travelocity). I tried telling them that isn't even the issue. The issue is no one was helping us. As soon as we got on the third floor, we were hit with the strong smell of marijuana, and I called to tell "the front desk" (a small table with a folding chair) and let them know that this just wasn't acceptable, especially since we have a non-smoking room. So they moved us even higher in the building, on the fourth floor, because nothing else was available. This room was even smaller. Neither rooms were as advertised. The entire house is old and echoes every single noise. The stairs don't creak, they moan, and it's a terrible sound. My poor grandmother got zero sleep. It also claimed to have a "continental breakfast" but it was just a bag with a bagel and capri sun... We checked out immediately the next morning and they refused to give us our money back. I talked to them in person and there was no sympathy for the issues we've encountered. Travelocity called them numerous times and they refused to work with us. I would have even settled for taking only half the original fee back but they refused find a middle ground. A REAL hotel would give good customer service and at least give back a partial refund. I considered calling lawyers but luckily Travelocity helped me with a partial refund (but to be clear this was NOT with any help from the hotel). This is not an acceptable way for a local business to treat customers. They should know that word of mouth can negatively impact their business and be willing to at least pretend to work with us. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to visit me or any of my writing friends who like to write in hotel rooms so I won't recommend it to you.

I am a retired female and when I arrived I was confronted with a set of stairs to the front door, which I could cope with. Once inside I had to climb two more sets of stairs with a full suitcase. The manager was worried about for the "elderly" stairs and offered to carry my case up the remainder of the stairs. The second set of stairs were in a derelict state . Once inside the room I realized that I didn't get the nice room like the photos displayed in the ad, the bed frame had chunks missing from the timber, there were stains on the carpet , the window shutters were all broken, the door to the bathroom was obviously a replacement due to the colour and the main door to the room was patched up from what looked like previous breakins. The only nice thing about my whole visit was the bathroom, although there were paint splatters all over the vanity from paint job. I had free wifi, but it only worked one night out of four. The manager claimed that she told me the rooms are not serviced daily, but I don't remember her stating that as that would have stuck in my mind, they are serviced every other day. On leaving I had to carry my own suitcase down, then wait for the manager to turn up before I could leave. I was charged and extra $25 because I arrived after 7pm and then another $29.00 because I didn't have cash and used my credit card.

I WISH I COULD GIVE NO STARS FOR THIS PLACE. I wish that my experience here was just a nightmare,…read morebecause at least I dont lose $140 in a nonrefundable deposit when I'm dreaming. Disgusting facilities. Horrible staff. Ended up crashing on a friend's house instead. So let me tell you a little story.... My three friends and I were in New York for a school trip and booked Tony's place because it was cheap and not too deep into Harlem... but boy oh boy were we in for a surprise. We get to the hotel (which is actually a beat up, unmarked house) and the manager is outside greeting a cab she called for another guest. She yells at us, "JUST STAY RIGHT THERE!" At this point we have no idea who this loud ass woman is, so we half ignore her. She then comes up to us and tells us that "TONY'S PLACE IS OUT OF SERVICE. YOU CAN'T STAY HERE. GET IN THE CAB AND WE'LL TAKE YOU TO OUR OTHER PLACE." My first thought is... uh no. She goes on to explain that she's the manager yada yada. My friends and I were all running late for a seminar, so we decided to just get in the cab (which was sketchy and black) and go. The driver takes us to another run down, gross house on freaking 153rd street. Her husband greets us at the door, and helps us take our bags upstairs to our room. THE ROOM Two dirty looking beds with unwashed sheets. Dirty looking stuffed animals on the walls as decoration. Entire place smells like mothballs. The bathroom (shared with all other guests) was disgusting -- sink covered in toothpaste spit, and someones retainer balanced on one corner. and to top it all off NO LOCK ON THE DOOR. In fact, NO DOORKNOB either. I look at the husband and say, "We cannot leave our stuff in a room with no lock on the door." He looks at me incredulously and tells me, "Your stuff is safe! I'm fixing the lock now -- the last guest took the key with her by accident, so I'm replacing the lock! No one has access to the room! There's no one here!" First of all, we came in with another guest, so that last part is obviously false. Plus, HE has access to our stuff. He keeps telling us over and over to just trust them.. but uh. no. The wife gets there. And she starts ARGUING with me. I'm trying to tell her that I can't leave my stuff in an unsecured room. We are four girls, unfamiliar with the city, staying in a hotel in deep Harlem, and we cannot leave our stuff in an unlocked room. She literally tells me, "YOU'RE YOUNG. YOUR ATTITUDE ISN'T HELPING. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. YOUR STUFF IS SAFE." I was amazed. We argued with her for a good half an hour before she let us into a locked room downstairs to store our stuff. She gave us her only keys (?!) to the house, and we walked out to our seminar. At this point, we were all fuming and could not believe that she would tell us we were being unreasonable for demanding a lock on the door. I ended up calling a friend to let us crash on his floor because I couldn't stand staying at that place. Even when we got back from the seminar later that afternoon, the woman CONTINUED to argue with us even after we said we weren't staying there. We told her that she should have contacted us via email, telling us about the location change, etc. She tells us that it "just happened last week!" I say that "last week would have given her plenty of time to contact us." Then she changes her story to " it just happened yesterday!" then "it just happened this morning! There was no way for us to contact you!" Unbelievable. And complete bullshit. We talked to the other guest that was staying there, and she told us that she had been moved to the other location three weeks ago. BOTTOM LINE: NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER IN A MILLION YEARS WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE.
