Such a beautiful venue. It's gorgeous in the late afternoon and its beauty doesn't dim in the dark. I would advise the ladies to wear comfortable heels because one will have to navigate a lot of grass, cobblestone and narrow stairways. I'm not sure if valet service is always available but at the event I attended, it was. I also noticed that they provide a shuttle service for folks who have difficulty managing the steps to or from the actual event. That way they can get out of their cars, board the shuttle and get to the event in relative ease. It's a critical accommodation for those with vision/mobility issues. I am looking into renting this venue for our anniversary. I'm so glad I discovered this place! Thanks to a wedding venue, I had the opportunity to visit this tranquil oasis along Laurel Canyon; the short-cut from West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The estate itself is quite a treasure, with some scary sculptures and beautiful waterfall near the reception area. Because the mansion is built in the hills, the driveway is steep and the tiered landscaped property makes for quite a long walk up stairs and driveway. I am so happy I attended and was able to visit this one of a kind adventure The theme is quite scary, with monsters and ghouls in sunken caves and a particularly winding walkway through a toturous route. If I had the money, I would book this place for Halloween! read more

This is a gorgeous venue that should definitely be toured! I was met with a few hiccups when setting the tour up (like you have to pick an event date so you can even set up a tour... even if you're flexible). However, we finally made it work and Sarah took us around the property. we had a few cars and had to wait for the gate to open... on busy and narrow Laurel Canyon. so after the minutes stretched on as cars swerved around us, we finally got in (safely!). it is seriously sprawling and impressive with many cool details that guests will be wowed at. read more

Coolest venue in Southern California? Let me introduce you to Houdini Estate! If you're looking to impress, it really doesn't get much better. This is the ultimate spot to throw a party, event, or wedding at. Between the staff, service, location, history, and the property itself, I don't know of any event space more deserving of a 5 star review. Starting with the staff, everyone I had the pleasure of dealing with at Houdini was always so nice, helpful, and inclusive. I want to give a special shout-out to Ella, who was my main point of contact throughout the rental process. She was extremely thorough, positive, and always pleasant to talk to. I loved how passionate she was about the property, and I really appreciated how thoughtful she was. Service was very helpful and accommodating throughout the planning, the event, and even the post-event stages. Planning such a special occasion is definitely not easy, especially during a pandemic. I had originally signed a contract for a weekend one year prior, but had to make the difficult decision to postpone. Houdini went above and beyond to help us reschedule. I was expecting at least some kind of financial penalty for breaking the agreement, but the staff was more than understanding of the situation and waived the fee. In terms of getting the security deposit, it could not have been quicker and more efficient. I want to sincerely thank everyone at Houdini for being so amazing. I think it goes without saying, but the location and history of the estate cannot be beat. Situated in the Hollywood Hills, deep inside Laurel Canyon, the property feels quiet, remote, private, and isolated, yet still very close to all that Los Angeles has to offer. I don't have time to discuss the history, but I highly recommend reading about it online. From the moment we first discovered this place, we knew it was too special not to book. I have to honestly say, it's one of the most unique and fun places I've been to. Not only is it beautiful, but there are so many different areas and fun discoveries throughout the estate. Taking the stairs to the top (to walk the mountain trail) and seeing a family of deer in the morning was just the cherry on top. I won't spoil anything else, but I do recommend taking a look at all of the pictures you can find. Words truly cannot begin to describe all that Houdini Estate has to offer. I was really excited that I was invited to an event at this venue. I mean it's the great magician Houdini's home! It's a historic estate. However, I was very underwhelmed. Pre-event the organizers told us that we had to wear flats because there are so many concrete (stone) stairs. Even the restrooms were up the steps. Being that this was a formal event and I was wearing a cocktail dress, I was not pleased. The event coordinators also told us there was limited parking so we had to take an Uber to get there. The drive is not easy anyways as the house is on the top of a hill on a winding road. The event was 5 miles away from me and in LA traffic it took an hour to get there. Granted, the event was on a weeknight and started in the early evening so there was rush hour traffic. Suffice it to say, I missed the cocktail hour which was a shame as I really needed a cocktail after that drive. The event took place outside on a spring night. It was very cold. I could not take off my coat the entire time. There were a few heat lamps but it wasn't enough for us. As a tribute to the great Houdini, who I love, this place also needs a good renovation. There are tons of event places in Los Angeles. Based on my experience at this event, I can't suggest this one. read more

Definitely a gorgeous, interesting, and historic venue! I've never been to another venue quite like it. The entrance seems grand, as you walk up some steep stone steps to get to cocktail hour. Parking on site was only available for a small handful of cars. We took an Uber, and unfortunately because the estate has multiple entrance we were dropped off at the wrong spot and had to walk a bit to the main entrance. I can see that this venue may be challenging for older or handicapped guests as there are a lot of stairs. During cooler months, I would not recommend this place for an outdoor event. It was extremely cold once the sun went down, even with a jacket. They did have space heaters, which were not very effective unless you were standing right underneath them. Overall I had a great time at this venue! The rooms were interesting and the grounds are beautiful. I had a great time at the event and would love to go to another! read more

She's very responsive with questions and easy to get a hold of! The venue is breathtaking with the landscape and the possibilities of being able to have any kind of event there. Our event isn't for a year still and I cannot wait. Each visit we have had I find myself more in love with it. The fact that you can make payments until your event is very helpful and overall the price is comparable if not less than a typical banquet hall for a wedding. My husband and I visited the Houdini Estate when we were newly engaged in October 2019. A quick Google search of 'fantastic outdoor venues in Los Angeles' showed us hundreds of images of the Estate's stunning gardens, and we were instantly struck by the obvious magic of the site. We decided to book a tour -- we scheduled a couple venue visits back to back on a Saturday as we began to dip our toes in the wedding planning water. Arriving at the Estate, we met Ella, one of the main coordinators at the venue. She was very kind, knowledgeable, patient with our unbridled excitement, and thrilled to show us the grounds on our personal tour. We fell in love with the atmosphere, the beauty of the gardens and its incredible variety of species, the daylight and fairy lights scattered throughout the site, and the charm and whimsy of the décor inside and around the guesthouse. Ella gave us the history of the Estate and its ties to legendary magician, Harry Houdini, and pointed out so many special features of the gardens, including the nearby hiking trails and secret passageways. Unreal -- it was truly magical. How could we look anywhere else? (We did, a few places, and they couldn't hold a candle! ) Alas, 2020 arrived and the whole world fell apart. Nothing went right through no fault of anyone's except the pandemic, and sadly, all of our plans for a 100-person incredible celebration with our family and friends dissolved. Unfortunately, we never got to have our dream wedding at the Houdini Estate, but we know that it would be an excellent venue for any special occasion. I don't even know where to begin. I hesitated posting this because we wondered if we just caught the property on a bad day, so I will try to remain objective. My fiancé and I scheduled a tour with Houdini on February 28. The following week, I got a call from Sarah at Houdini asking "if I wanted to schedule a tour." When I informed her we had already scheduled, she apologized profusely and I went about my day. On March 11, I got another text message from Sarah, asking if I wanted to schedule a tour at Houdini. I informed her, again, that we had a tour scheduled for March 31, and again she apologized for the disorganization. Fast forward to today: The tour: We arrived at Houdini promptly at 9:55 for our 10am appointment to find the gate closed and locked. I gave Sarah a call to inform her we were out front, and I was met with "I'm sorry I didn't hear back from you, so I had assumed you had cancelled." Very strange response for someone I had confirmed my appointment time with three separate times. Sarah gave us the gate code and said she would arrive in 15 minutes. She arrived at 10:45am. Beginning the tour, something immediately seemed very off. I'm not sure if it was because we are a young couple, but she mentioned that she had gone out the night prior, her being 25 herself. Normally, I would not care, but given the unprofessional nature of everything we'd experienced at that point, I was incredibly turned off to a venue that I was previously very excited about. Throughout the tour, Sarah seemed to struggle to pull sentences together, and had difficulty gaining access to parts of the property via gates/locks. Overall, I do not want to make any accusations, but she very well may have been intoxicated from the night prior. At the end of the tour, Sarah did not sit us down and provide a quote sheet or anything of the nature, asking me to pull up the information on my cell phone for reference. Not a great look for a 20 thousand dollar wedding venue The property: Do not get me wrong, the historic nature of this property is beautiful, but it had not been well maintained. The reception space that is seen in photographs is comprised of turf grass and fake hedges. The art collection is fun, but combined with the poor sales experience we found it to be a bit gimmicky. The house itself was much smaller than we had imagined based on the photos on the website as well. Final thoughts: I'm so disappointed that we had this experience with Houdini as we were very excited about it. Needless to say we won't be moving forward, and I hope this was just a bad day and not the usual presentation of their wedding staff. read more

I hosted my wedding here in October of 2019. The Houdini Estate is a magical etherial property nestled off Laurel Canyon. In order to properly review the venue, I have to separate it into 3 categories; The Grounds, The House, The Manager. The Grounds are more beautiful than I could explain. It's a multilevel, lush, overgrown, ornate, spectacular garden sprinkled with a waterfall, wishing well, hidden corners and paths, and gorgeous unique foliage. Though there are stone stairs to take you and your guests from one level to the next, there is a drive way up the side for those who are unable to get up and down stairs easily, which was a major plus for some of the guests at our wedding. Each person raved about the gardens and had stories about nooks and crannies they stumbled upon during their visit. Our photos are pretty epic with this breathtaking venue as our backdrop. I highly recommend having a full vendor walk through for your event. According to the vendors I had, this is a super unique venue with a complicated lay out. Day of runs much smoother with everyone knowing where to go and how to get there. The House, where we spent the night prior and the night of our wedding, was perfect for what we needed- a place for everyone to get ready, gather for photos, and crash if needed. Though it is immaculately decorated and the attention to detail in design made it very aesthetically cool- the home is outdated, doesn't get very efficiently air conditioned, complicated gate system at the end of the drive ways, and small kitchen, makes it less than ideal for entertaining. Our wedding was held entirely outside on the lawn and drive way and only those who found their way to the estate saw it- which worked out perfectly. The Manager, Lori, is incredibly informative. She knows the Houdini Estate in and out. Based on the many events she has witnessed there, she had great input about ways that things run smoothest and work out best. She had informed advice about guest count, parking, timing, weather, food, beverages-- everything. Lori is very specific about the rules of the venue, which I totally understood, given its location amongst residential streets and the historic value. I found the other representative we had to work with throughout the planning process to be difficult to get a hold of and rude on occasion- especially considering the time sensitive nature of planning a wedding and the enormous cost of hosting here. Overall, the Houdini Estate made our wedding memorable, stunning, and super unique. It suited our needs and guest list perfectly and helped my dream wedding become a reality. I hope to be able to spend time there again soon and get a taste of the magic we felt on our Wedding Day. read more

The Houdini Estate is seriously a magical place! The moment you walk in, you see the breathtaking view of lush greenery, a waterfall, and statues that you can't stop looking at. I can't imagine all the time that is put in day in and day out to make this venue truly the best place to have one of the most special days of your life. My husband (!) and I just got married there a few days ago, and it went without a hitch. We worked closely with Ella the last 10 or so months, and she has truly been a pleasure. But as one of the guests that stayed at this venue overnight, I have to say that the living accommodation is relatively old and not ideal. I am writing this review at 3am because I was arranged to sleep in the "Monkey room" but it was absolutely impossible to sleep in because of the light, noise, and mild moldy smell. It also got no outlet to plug your phone in, zero privacy, and you need to travel far for bathroom. (And obviously I can't go complaint to the newly weds so thus unfortunately just writing a review at 3am.) In the future please be honest about how many guest you can reasonably accommodate so that we can arrange hotels accordingly because monkey room is not a place that anyone should sleep in. But otherwise this is an amazing venue that is very interesting, fun, and unique! And it was a beautiful and perfect wedding! read more

We held our wedding here 2 weeks ago and our guests could not stop raving about the Houdini Estate! The venue is exceptionally beautiful and has breathtaking landscape and scenery. You can already see from the pictures that this place is gorgeous, the price is fairly reasonable compared to the cost of other event venues. Working with the venue and the venue manager Lori, however is extremely stressful and at times unprofessional. We attempted to book the venue over 1 year ago after doing a visit to the property. After being told the venue was available, we called and emailed several times with no response, and after 2 weeks of attempts we were finally contacted and told that our date was reserved by another couple and were given options of a different date. Even after paying the initial deposit, contacting Lori was an absolute nightmare. We were not given the final rental contract until the day of our check in to the event which gave us literally zero time to review. She is a sweet person however is clearly overworked for what the demands of the job require. The venue provides nothing for the event so all food, rentals, decor, etc must be booked through vendors. The venue is up in Laurel Canyon and the estate is on a steep hill so not all vendors/trucks can access the venue and this may be an issue for some. The venue can not be booked for one night and you must rent it for 2 nights for some reason which obviously increases the price. We only needed the venue for our wedding on Saturday but had to pay for Friday- Sunday. The venue is extremely awe inspiring, beautiful and gorgeous, however the venue has a laundry list of rules and regulations that are unlike ANY other venue, and our vendors found working with the venue difficult. I would recommend the venue for events but be weary of the headaches and stress that the it will cause. Dont say you werent warned! read more

I went to this random party at the Houdini Estate Wednesday, a blow-out weeknight open bar event hosted by St. Germain. One of my best friends, June K., is the head designer of a cool, frequently Instagrammed fashion label, and she invited me along, as this was basically a party for Angelenos without normal adult jobs, and she knew I could be counted on to drink heavily on a school night. It was a fun party, lavish and glamorous, and this was the right venue. The Houdini Estate is pretty over the top--I didn't get to see inside, but the pictures suggest maximal gaudiness. It may not be the property I'd buy if I had several million dollars lying around, but it was definitely something, an impressively large estate with sprawling grounds covered in greenery. St. Germain hired a celebrity floral designer to create an elderflower structure on one of the lawns, and that was cool and deliciously excessive. Guests took a lot of pictures hanging around the property to post on social media. It was that kind of party, and the Houdini Estate was ideal for it. I had my first tarot card reading and got gloriously drunk (the last thirty minutes of my night were not so great, but I don't really remember them, so, success!). A very Los Angeles sort of evening, and I have the Polaroid souvenir to prove it. I don't know if I'll get invited back to the Houdini Estate, but I'm sure if I do, it'll be a good time. read more
