I have never had a bad time at the Hub Pub! Food is good/great. Prices of food and beer are pretty cheap. There's almost always plenty of room. The upstairs area is GREAT for groups! The servers aren't great, but they are ok. This is my go-to bar when at Downtown Crossing! read more

I've been here about 10 times. The prices are cheap, which is great on the wallet. But you get what you pay for. There's no real decor, it's kinda ugly inside, upstairs looks like it's from the 70s or 80s. The guy at the door is a character. He's funny, engaged, and wants everyone to have a good time, so that's nice. However, the service from the waitresses is unfriendly, rushed, impersonal. That's been consistent every time I've ordered, they seem really busy. Either they are understaffed every time I am there or they are mismanaged and their workflow needs improvement. In any case, last visit I started getting wrong orders when I was with my group of friends. I ordered a pitcher of Sam Adams Lager and I got an IPA. I ordered a pitcher of Heineken and I got a Red Ale. I went to complain. One wrong order? Ill overlook it. Second wrong order I had to say something. When I approached my waitress she was unapologetic and blamed me and the bartenders downstairs for the mistake. She talked back to me as she was looking at her register, she didn't even speak to my face and then interrupted me to finish other people's orders. She started to argue with me and even got her co worker to argue with me. Honestly, I just wanted to make sure my next order wouldn't be screwed up. She provided the worst service you could for that situation. As a result, we didn't get anything else and left early. I don't want to go back. After just pulling into Boston my coworkers and I were tired and hungry and didn't feel like venturing far from our hotel to find a place to eat. We stumbled upon the Hub Pub and thought why not try it out. It's definitely a bit of a dive but for sports fans it's probably a pretty good space to watch a game. The service is very quick and friendly. I ordered with lobster roll which came with fries and coleslaw. The food was ok but not great. I found the lobster roll a little on the bland side to be honest and it didn't blow me away. The sides too weren't anything to write home about. The price though was good ($10.99) so I have no complaints on that front. I'd suggest visiting if you're in the area and looking for some cheap eats. It's not worth a detour though. read more

A great dive bar. Nothing special and nothing remarkable except for the bouncer with the sweet 'stache and the waitress with a "wicked" accent. But then again, I'm a New Yawker... Went here to watch NCAA games. When we arrived it was noisy and full downstairs but much quieter upstairs. Service left something to be desired, but no one complained about their food (a thanksgiving sandwich, a burger, wings, and pretzels). Pitchers of Sam Adams Seasonal were $7 and we got about 4-5 glasses out of each one. There were 2 or 3 TVs upstairs so it was convenient for watching games. read more

Bleh. Needed to get lunch, wanted a beer, was in the mood for pub food, saw this pub and suggested we go in. The beer and service were fine, but the food was not. The chips of my fish and chips were soggy and not salty enough, and the fish was very greasy. My boyfriend got a buffalo chicken wrap that he said was good, but only ate half of it and hardly any of the fries, so I suspect that it was a pretty weak "good." Literally my favorite bar in Boston. I am not exaggerating, I lived in the area, I went to law school in the area and I have a fair basis for comparison. It is what some would call "divey", but I'd argue it adds to the charm. It's the kind've bar that sums up the city in general. The drinks are always great, always reasonably priced. They have a stocked and loaded bar and they'll provide just about anything. They have a fair selection on tap and a good selection of bottled beers. They have great prices for pitchers and nice specials on things like Molson's and Coors The bar is also in an excellent location. It is almost right across from the capital. It is close enough to Quincy Market that it is easily within walking distance, but far enough that it is not overpriced. It is about a 10 minute walking distance from the Garden, so it makes for a great pre-game place for Bruins games, Celtics games, and other assorted events. The insides are also charming and friendly. There are several tv's and even a drop down screen for a projector on certain nights. Most of all it has the friendliest staff of any bar in Boston. The bartenders are excellent people who are funny, engaging and friendly. It never feels as though they are stretching or going out of their way to talk and laugh with customers. They legitimately are just nice and funny people. Hands down, the Hub Pub is the best bar in Boston. read more

I have been coming here for 20 years and this place is legit. I am so sick of millennial douchebags not understanding old school Boston and the culture this city has to offer. And for full disclosure, this review was based almost entirely off pub grub appetizers that we could have gotten at just about any other place in Boston. Four people ordered an appetizer each, and we split two pitchers of Sam lager. Worked out to be about $20 per person. Nothing really stood out one way or the other. One of the best, most friendly bars I have ever been to! My husband and I stopped in over St Paddys weekend to escape the sideways snowstorm and hordes of people at the parade. Jamie behind the bar and Dave at the door made our afternoon so much fun! Jamie poured our drinks super strong and was fun, attentive, and generous the whole afternoon. He bought my husband and I shots and hung out with us after his shift was over. It was one of the best experiences with a bartender I've probably ever had. The bar itself is super casual and a dive, which is exactly the vibe that we were looking for. TVs everywhere, a jukebox and friendly people. Dave at the door got up at one point and started singing "My heart will go on." Great stuff. To soak up all our booze, we ordered the fish and chips, which were amazing! I wasn't expecting a dive bar to do such great food. I really was blown away by the friendliness and generosity of everyone at Hub Pub. This place is pretty great for the prices. Very affordable pub food, though it's not the most delicious. I ordered the sliders and they were decent- not super flavorful but completely edible. They didn't come with fries so I ordered a side of fries, which turned out to be a giant bowl of fries with enough food for 4 people. I was a little disappointed that they were out of several things on their beer menu. For example, I tried to order a pitcher of Yuengling (all of their pitchers say Yuengling on them) but they told me they only had bottles. Service was slow, but our waitress was super nice and friendly. Overall, not amazing, but you get what you pay for. read more

This is a dive bar, but it has to be the best dive bar ever! The "Moustache guy" at the door made us feel like we were at home from the minute we walked in the door. We had gone there a day previously but couldn't find a seat, but promised to come back later. When we did come back, he remembered us and even remembered that we liked the band Fun. So he played us a Fun song on the jukebox. That's amazing! He already knows me and I just got there. The food was great, and really inexpensive for the area. I had the lobster roll special and there was a ton of lobster for only $11. Plus the drinks come in large glasses and were tasty. I also noticed cheap pitchers. The service at this bar is absolutely terrible. That being said, the drinks are also incredibly cheap. I don't know many other bars in Boston where you can get a $5 pitcher of beer. You can sit a big crowd of people upstairs in the bizarre cafeteria-like seating area, or downstairs at the bar. One cool thing is the opera style boxes over the bar where you can view the big projector screen TV from. I love this place for a few reasons. Cheap beer pitchers! Can't find those everywhere. It's your typical dive bar, but with a friendly and funny bouncer with a crazy moustache who sings songs and a blase wait staff who won't get in your way. It's great for just kickin' back with friends. The food is not that great, but it's perfect for hte kind of place it is. Just don't go expecting good food, go for hte good times with friends and cheap beer. Plus it's tucked away so you won't find too many d-bags and shenanigans. The appeal of Hub Pub is its convenience. Right in Downtown Crossing, it's a convenient place to go after work. Our office used to host company outings here. We were placed upstairs and always had enough room. The food is your typical pub fare, nothing too special but nothing bad. Service was attentive. I've always found this bar boring. Only ever stopped in because I was in the area with my coworkers. The bartender, I think her name is Fozzy, is very rude and overly dramatic. I watched her kick out a patron, very cool person I'd been talking to, for no good reason, something really dumb. Maybe they resort to this idiocracy to make the boring ambience more exciting? I don't know. You have a long day at work and want to unwind and relax at a bar, the last thing you want to deal with is bartenders, with the tinkerbell complex, exerting their "power" to kick out perfectly harmless patrons. There are plenty other bars in the area to unwind after work, with way friendlier staff, much funner atmosphere, who understand the importance of handling their patrons with professionalism. Went in here to grab a beer before a nearby dinner reservation at 9 on a Saturday. I have to say I was pretty sad we didn't just start and finish our night here. My boyfriend's and I say at the bar, ordered d dinner points, and within 15 minutes the door guy was selecting songs and getting the whole bar to participate in karaoke and it wasn't even 9 pm (his name is David and I don't know the guy but already love him). Definitely recommend as a super friendly fun place to have a beer. As a local I would've assumed this might be a hot tourist spot just because of the location (and might havewritten it off without visiting), but it's a really friendly, fun place to grab a beer and hang out. I still think that a $7 semi-OK club sando is Ok here, but when you mix that rotting cabbage smell with food you just sort of lose your appetite. Suck Suck SUCK. This place may call itself the "friendliest bar on Earth" but man it sucks. If you are one of those types who read reviews for food only and hate service oriented reviews, skip me. Wandered in here on a Sunday late afternoon after going out at the waterfront. As everyone has already said, when everything else is busy this is the place to go. The location really stinks for a bar that wants any business late night or on a weekend, but for tourists getting lost in the lustrous Downtown Crossing it probably fits the bill. I can see them getting excited over baked beans with every entree *rolling eyes* But, back on topic - there was literally one person at the bar when I walked in. ONE. And it turns out it was the cook. He was in his chef attire, but never turned eyes from the TV to address that patrons had just come in. So we sit. And sit. And wait. And watch some basketball. And sit some more. Then look at each other. Then finally the bartender ascends the stairs and realizes two people have sat down. He ask if we want drinks. We do. We order a red wine (Cabernet, Mondavi, disgusting and bland) and a winter lager. I need a few minutes to look through the menu...bartender stares at us in an awkward way. I wonder aloud if I want an appetizer or if my boyfriend wants to split one. Bartender stares some more. We decide we want buffalo wings, on bone. Bartender hears entire conversation, never breaking stare. Bartender asks if we want more time. I say we want buffalo wings, on bone and then I need a few minutes to decide what I want for lunch. He awkwardly stares a bit more and I *THINK* tries to make a sarcastic face and says "whatever you need"...and turns around and enters the app on his register- it rings up in the kitchen - "chef" stares at TV and doesn't make a move. Bartender goes over to talk to waitress one who is now reading a book at the bar. They chit chat. About 7 minutes later he saunters over to take our orders. Pastrami sandwich w/fries, and steak tips. Steak tips come with 2 sides, neither being a salad. BF asks if he can trade any sides out for a salad? Bartender says "how hungry are you"? He answers "pretty hungry". I interject "they have a caesar salad with steak tips, why not get that"? Bartender says "which one do you want...you're the boss" and THEN "unless she's the boss....then I guess you get the salad". (Red flag #99 this place SUCKS). I pipe down and the bartender suggests "what about steak tips with a side of mashed and a caesar" (remember 2 sides). BF agrees that's perfect. Bartender looks a chef and says "ok go to work". He begrudgingly gets up and shuffles off. We go back to normal conversation. 20 minutes passes. I feel like it's getting to be way to long for an appetizer wait. No sooner do I suspect, but here they come out of the kitchen. Wonderful. Two seconds later here comes our food. Bartender says "here you go all together!" like that is the most wonderful thing that could happen to us. At this point I've resigned to never come back to this retarded establishment. Remembering one more time, there are NO OTHER PATRONS IN THE ENTIRE PLACE. You can't even stage the apps 5 minutes before the food????? We eat some apps. Bartender brings over another winter lager for the empty glass. Never asked but it's ok as it would have been ordered.. Bartenders g/f enters. He complains he's made no money all day and it's soooooooooooooooooo slow. Thanks, I really want to hear this. I get no napkins so I use the bar cocktail napkins for buffalo wing sauce on fingers. My BF gets a HUGE caesar salad and steak tips with potatoes and baked beans. I don't even have to look at the bill to know he got an entree salad. My sandwich bread was really good. The menu says it's baked fresh, and I actually believe it. Pastrami is not stringy but it's pretty dry. Covered in mustard it's fine. Fries are crisp and very good. The BF said his meat was cooked perfect and the food was really good all things considered. This is where the compliments END. Bartender came over while I had sandwich in my mouth and poured me another wine. I definitely did not ask for one and I didn't drink it. Of course the bill comes out and it's close to $54. Wings, sandwich, steak dinner, caesar entree, 2 beers, 2 wines. What a money grubbing loser. Combined with during the entirety of the visit being interrupted not once or twice but THREE times because he thought he "heard me say" something that I didn't say. As in I'm having a conversation during which I say the word football. He goes "WHAT about the Giants!"...Are you serious? STFU. Or at least get a personality. Never asked how the food was. I had the meatloaf at Adrian's (spelling) recommendation. It will get me to dinner, but not back to there to eat. "The Friendliest Pub in the Hub!" is its official motto. Well, maybe not. The thing that is so remarkable about this pub is the thing that I like the most about it. It is so abso-freakin'-lutely average. Seriously, it has beer, it has booze, it has several TV's, it has a jukebox, it has Golden Tee. The two times I have been there the patrons (I can't quite say "crowd") have been completely normal. The food was just okay. The prices were about right. Why would someone go to such a normal bar? Because there is no hint of drama anywhere. My friend and I chose it (both times) because The Beantown was too loud to have a conversation. This bar is not a destination but rather a conduit. It feels like a neighborhood bar except there is no real residential area around Downtown X-ing. It's not date bar but rather a place to catch up with someone you haven't seen in years. The only thing slightly interesting is the Wang Center-esque box seats that make up the 2nd level (aka balcony?). Try the Hub Pub, you might just think it's okay. read more
