Grade A, top of the line pub. Just walked out after a pitcher and loaded nachos for $17. We spend 2 hours there. I don't think there's a better/cheaper place in the city! We sat upstairs and the waitress was very nice, always checked on us and didn't forget us. Their bathrooms in the basement are really deplorable though, its $10 to get a lock that works. This place is rockin' a pretty sweet Ironsides vibe. (Old dive in Sacramento, CA. I got 86ed for hooliganism.) We came in to hide from the hot rain and take refuge from the underwhelming menu at the Omni Parker House. As we're checking out the menu, drunk guy #1 is helpful and tells us, "The tips are fucking awesome." I can dig it. Ok selection of food, and an ok selection on the taps. We ordered the steak tips, and the chicken fried chicken. The food was great, this was the best mashed potatoes I've had since I was at O'Reilly's in SF. (Think colcannon.) The steak tips were well cooked and flavorful, the chicken fried steak was well cooked, and the breading was very WELL prepared. This place also serves the first baked beans I've been able to enjoy in the last 10 years. That's no mean feat, that's for sure. (Compliments to the cooks.) The drinks were great as well, great price, and the bartender didn't try to short pour like I've found is common in MA. He makes a great whisky sour, and a gin and tonic. Great sense of humor, and very welcoming to us obviously "new folk". Bunch of screens to watch sports, and a jukebox that has just about everything on it thanks to the wonders of teh intarwebz. (It was constantly playing NKOTB, which was rather "uncomfortable", so I fixed it with some Nena.) I did enjoy watching a rather smallish hipster get completely pissed, then stumble out in what I like to call, drunk gymnastics. (I hope you made it home safely, man.) So I pretty sure Hub Pub has the strongest and cheapest drinks in Boston. Top shelf vodka drinks are like $5.50 which is really good. The bartenders know how to pour too, I have never been served a weak drink. The food is pretty good and cheap too. Their country fried chicken tender appetizer tastes amazing and they give you plenty of chicken too. Their sandwiches are served on fresh baked bread. The waitstaff is always makes sure you have a drink, and they are quick when it comes to serving you your food. This is one my favorite dive bars in Boston. read more

I had never heard of this place until my friend dragged me here as an afterparty spot for her 40th birthday celebration. I immediately took a liking to the cozy atmosphere and giant, animated bouncer/host. We snagged a few tables for our group upstairs after some minor shuffling with the (extremely nice) people already seated there and some side-eye from the waitresses, who turned out to be competent but not very friendly. Aside from that, the drink prices were great, and we were able to get a little rowdy since it was already a lively place. What makes this spot 4 stars vs. 3 is the music selection. THE STORY: 15 of my nearest and dearest coworkers and I were looking for a place to grab a quick lunch on a Friday afternoon. After calling 10 other places that couldn't fit us, we ended up at the Hub Pub. So yeah, basically, this place is so unpopular it was exactly what we needed. THE BEER: Maybe it's a California thing, but where I come from, you can't call yourself a pub if you only have crappy generic beer on tap. I don't remember the full selection, but it was something like: Budweiser, Guinness, Sam Adams, and MGD. THE FOOD: Mediocre across the board. Burgers were ok, sandwiches were ok, nobody was particularly excited about anything. And the fries were soggy. I hate soggy fries. THE SERVICE: We were a huge group, so I understand that it's tough to keep up, but this was pretty uninspired. My buddy had to ask for water 4 times before he got any. The food didn't all come out at the same time, so some folks were actually done eating before others got their lunch. I've never had a problem with the Hub Pub, so I don't know why everyone else has such a big problem. It's cheap, has TVs to watch, and serves me my alcohol in a timely manner. The Hub pub is probably my favorite bar to go to when I come into town. The Beacon Hill club is the best hamburger on toast around and the cup (it actually comes in a coffee cup) of clam chowder is thick and full of good potaters and clams. I've been coming here off and on for 5 years and the food and drinks are consistent. The waitresses are all very nice. The bartender is all over the place going from accusing me of being a homeless guy coming to pee in his bar to my "buddy" who wanted to talk about Tennessee with me. The patrons range from twenty somethings up to old drunkards who without hesitation may give you an accapella singing performance to remember for a lifetime! During the week, the upstairs is pretty empty so you can spread out and actually have some room to talk or watch sports while hanging out. Friday nights are more crowded but I've never had to wait to sit anywhere in the place. I have to take off a star. This place does have some interesting memories for me, as it is where someone once tried to recruit me into the world of the pick-up artist (you know, those garishly dressed dudes who had their own VH1 show despite the fact they looked like David Blaine rejects?) Maybe I just wanted to watch the ALCS rather than go to a club. But beyond that, it's not my cup of tea. There are much better dive bars in the area that have more exciting food and brew options. The food is only okay, the ambiance isn't that good, and while they've got TVs in decent places for game-watching, it's just not that enjoyable of a bar. Checked out this friendly little pub on Halloween night and immediately fell in love with the mediocrity of the place. There's 6-80 million big screen televisions everywhere playing different games, a couple tables and the bar on the lower level and a bigger more engaging set of tables and bar stuff on the upstairs level. The bouncer at the door was really big, but in the friendly teddy bear kind of way and I had to resist poking him in the belly. Yes, it really was that kind of a place. The food is reallly mediocre bar food, but in huge portions and at a decently moderate price. I got a plate of jalapeno poppers ( with red chilli peppers, weird right?) for like 8 bucks and shipyard pumpkin on tap with a cinnamon and sugar rim. My friends devoured a bunch of their cocktails and cheesy fries and we bobbed along to the confusing plethora of 90's and 00's pop and hip hop music. There was nothing really too special about this place and that's what made it so much fun. I'll definitely be back on game night, it's one of the few bars downtown where I'm guaranteed to get a seat, a cheap receipt, and a smile from everyone on staff. read more

Me and my buddy visiting from Seattle came here looking for a retreat from the misty air outside and for some drinks. My first impression wasn't all that spectacular. He had to go use the bathroom so I decided to go sit down on the bar and looked at the menu. Some older guy (I think he was the owner) looked at me like I had 3 heads.. like I didn't belong or something. I found that strange but decided to just let it be since we needed a drink. Buddy comes back, we ordered some beer and a side of chicken fingers. I must say that the chicken fingers were THE BOMB! I didn't expect much but omg they were delicious. The atmosphere was just your typical dive bar with two floors. The upper floor at the time was hosting some game on and I kept hearing jeers and screams whenever their team did something they liked which I liked because it made the place feel more neighborhoody? That and the diversity of the clientele. I saw a bunch of old timers just sitting around drinking as well as young college students so it felt really nice to be in that atmosphere. After a while the owner starts talking to us and we mentioned how we were both in the military and I guess he warmed up to us after that which made me sitting right in front of the tap easier. He gave us some history lessons about Washington street, chitchatted about a lot of small things and it made me enjoy the place a lot more. There was a wait at Silvertone, and since the goal was just to watch a bit of the game and have a beer or two, we figured Hub Pub would do. It wouldn't. Sat down at a dirty table (after it had been "cleaned" by pushing a wet, dirty rag around on it) and looked over the menu while we waited, and waited, and waited. Ordered a pitcher of Coors Lite for $7 because the quoted price for pitchers of good beer was $17 - who charges that for a pitcher of anything? The food was mediocre - I had a passable grilled cheese (hard to ruin, after all) and overcooked fries, while others at my table ordered a sad plate of nachos with a minimal amount of melted cheese, "salsa" that looked like it came out of a Ragu jar and nothing else - no scallions, no olives, no jalapenos, no sour cream, no guac. I've had better nachos at a movie theater. There are other options in the downtown crossing area - Silvertone, Marliave, Kennedy's, Beantown, Foley's... would go with any of those over Hub Pub. read more

So my Drunkie McDrunkster friend picks me up from the train station in a cab with a six pack of Bud Light at 10 am I knew I was in for a treat on Labor Day weekend. Fast forward five hours and I've been dragged to pretty much every bar in the Park Square area by the self proclaimed Pope of Park Square (dubbed Dope of Park Square by me). I end up at the "friendliest Pub in the Hub", drink heavily and then remember I have to pick up a rental car and get my ass to the Cape. Whoa! I will give them the friendly thing because they took me under their wings when they realized I was with the drunkest man on the planet and had no idea where I was. When the boozer could no longer speak in full sentences, they amused me and they let me pick the lottery tickets from the machine and everyone won cash. I scored $400 myself, $50 for the bartender and a few hundred for the randoms that were rubbing me for luck (yeah right). The food was awesome and had a magical sobering power that eliminated the buzzed factor stat! I agree with other reviewers that The Hub Pub is about the most average bar downtown, which is why my friends and I like it so much. It's the place you go when you just want to hang out with people you already know and get a pint and some food. We've never had to wait for a table, even the one time we had a group of 17. The night the Red Sox won the World Series, the Beantown Pub had a line around the block, but we walked right into the Hub Pub. And freakin' Green Day showed up around the 6th inning! It can't be all bad if that's where Green Day watched THE World Series. Don't expect much. The placemats are the menus and the prices haven't changed in over 7 years. They have regular pub food, try the ravioli or the meatloaf, and you can't go wrong with the burgers. Their wings are so-so. My guy friends like the cute Irish waitresses. If you need a stop on a Saturday night when every other bar in town is packed, The Hub Pub is the place to go. read more

This is by far my favorite bar in Boston. I'm young, and when I go out I like to enjoy myself for the least amount of money possible. For some reason, people claim that The Red Hat is the spot to go to conserve your money and get cheap drinks, but they clearly haven't been to the Hub Pub. For one, the pitchers at the HP are cheaper, and if you choose to go with the well drinks, it's impossible to find a stronger drink for 6 bucks in the entire city. The bartenders are awesome and friendly if you get to know them. There's an older crowd that is here most of the afternoons M-F, so keep that in mind. Oh Hub Pub. You beautifully weird dive/sports bar. Forget Faneuil Hall. This is the place to hit up after work if you work downtown and like a nice cool frosty one. The HP's got lots of affordable pitchers and the best darn disco fries around. If you don't like disco fries, that's fine. More for me. As sports bars go, this is not a very pretentious one. There's often a mix of young business types and old-timers in flannel milling about. Great place to catch the Bruins or the BoSox after working late. Or you know, any time. Any time! read more

I don't consider this a stand-out in terms of bars downtown, but if you aren't picky, and just want a place to fill your face with beer and greasy food and probably some friends, Hub Pub will definitely do the trick. There is a downside to Hub Pub, in that the lower area can get really crowded on weekends, and if you aren't sitting at the bar or a table, you're going to spend a lot of time dodging patrons and servers all night. And the upper area is pretty much just tables, so unless you snag one of those, you're downstairs standing in the awkwardly-shaped bar area. On the positive side, if you want something fatty and carby to slow down the flow of booze from the cheap Coors pitcher you'll inevitably dump down your gullet, the burgers are good, large, and come at a decent price, so even if you feel guilty about the calories, you won't feel bad about the hit to your wallet. Overall, this place is good enough and will give you what you want from a bar, but not a whole lot more. But sometimes, that's all you really need. read more

If you smile and say thank you enough times, the waitress will warm up to you! I think I caught this place on a bad night, on a Monday before Christmas. The service and food was terrible. I had the chicken cutlet special and it tasted like it was fresh from the microwave. I believe there was some confusion in the kitchen too because it took about 45 minutes to receive our food. It's in a central locations and easy to get to. Just had an excellent supper with a friend and I want to go back. My friend had the Thanksgiving sandwich, which looked really good and really big. It came with fries and gravy. He almost couldn't finish it. I had the steak tip salad. It also was a large salad with four large steak tip chunks. It was cooked to perfection (I like my steak rare) and it was delicious. I have been to this place a couple of times and will not be going back again. The food is not great - not aweful - but not great. It depends on what you order. Ordered a burger once and it was average. Ordered nachos another time and it was literally just stale round tortilla chips with melted cheese on top. I could have made better at home. What really makes this place aweful though is the service. I ordered the deluxe nachos and was brought the regular (see above). When I pointed this out to the waitress she argued with me about whose fault it was and what ingrediants were supposed to come on what. When I asked to see the manager, the manager was rude, impatient and also wanted to argue with me. All I wanted was for the bad nachos to get taken off the bill. She finally ended the conversation by ripping the check out of the presenter and stomping off. No one apologized. Not once. I can forgive that kind of thing from a server, but not from management. Second time being here and both times I had the same great service. Its a great late night hang out spot to be with your co workers. There are two floors as soon as u walk in to your left is the bar with lots of bar stools .To your right some stairs which takes you up to where there a tables and chairs for groups to dine. We wandered into this place on a cold Sat. afternoon for a quick lunch. It's off a side street in Downtown crossing and we saw the overhead sign that said that it was the "friendliest bar in town". This place is def cozy with a Cheers kinda feel in that there were a bunch of regulars there that the bartenders knew by name. However, if you weren't a regular, this place was DEF not cozy!! There's this growly bartender that works there that is def not the friendliest guy. As for the food, its pretty standard bar fare, but not very tasteful. I ordered the salad, and it basically was lettuce with some carrots and cucumbers. The portions are definitely big, though. We ordered a side of fries, and got frozen crinkly style fries that I could've made at home better. Oh well, think we'll try out Kennedy's or Cafe Marlieve next time. read more

To be honest - this isn't a place I would seek out on my own. It's grubby, sticky, and carpeted (who does that!?). It smells a little like wet dog and decorated like a trailer in New Hampshire. So that being said...I went with a few friends who mentioned it was a place to get "high octane drinks" and "cheap eats." Confirmed. Drinks are definitely high-octane - though for me, this is unsavory. I prefer to have drinks that trick me into believing they have little alcohol in them. Then, later in the night when I'm crossed-eyed, slurring, and stumbling home I can curse them for being so tasty. The food isn't bad...but it's not great either. The nachos had chili that looked like dog food (and didn't have much flavor). The mozzerella sticks were pretty good if a bit rubbery (which means they were frozen, but that's expected). I have to say that the Chili Cheese Dogs were pretty yummy. As I mentioned, the chili could use more flavor, but the buttered toasted buns were great and the hotdog had that nice "snap!" when you bit into them. I got the potato salad as a side and it was good. I suggest this place if you are a non-discerning drunk (even if just an occasional drunk...) that comes to drink and then eats out of necessity. Otherwise, stick with the high-octane gasoline - I mean cocktails - and have a crazy night out! read more

I'm all about a good dive bar. I like cheap beer and when I'm eating for the sole purpose of soaking up the booze in my stomach, cheap bar eats are where it's at. I didn't order the round of beers but I heard a rumor in the midst of our group that pitchers were $7. Hey that's what I paid down the street for 1 beer. Score. When it became imperative that we eat something or fall on our faces (maybe that was just me) we ordered some mozzarella sticks, cheese fries and nachos. They weren't that bad... I mean, don't eat the food sober but when you've tied one on, it does the trick. We were visiting Boston on our honeymoon in May and stumbled upon the Hub Pub on one of our adventures along the Freedom Trail. Literally my favorite stop! We have found our neighborhood bar for whenever we move to Boston. We love you Hub Pub and can't wait to return! Hub pub was the ONLY place other than our hotel that we stopped into more than once. I didn't realize how much we went here until a couple of weeks ago when I went to pull out my ID and the bouncer said "don't worry, I know who you are". It was shocking, mostly because we hadn't been there in about 3 months. Either the bouncer has an amazing memory, or I've been going every weekend and getting so drunk that I effectively lose all recollection of the event. Clearly we keep going back for a reason. Or multiple... so where to start? There are always seats, and unless someone is blasting death metal on the jukebox, its quiet enough to have a conversation. Pitchers of Coors light are $7, the bartender knows how to make a white wine spritzer the English way, AND they have my number 1, hands down, favorite french fries in all of Boston (crinkle cut). They also have great deals on private parties. We celebrate all of our birthdays and special occasions at the Hub Pub because of this. Sharon, the party planner is great, and not just because she's a fellow Brit. The one downside is that there is one waitress who is really slow, possibly constantly stoned, and who has flat affect. I don't think I've EVER seen her smile, and clearly we go there a lot. I used to get annoyed, but now I see her as part of the charm. It's kind of hilarious that she always seems so bored ad annoyed by everything. I highly recommend hub pub to people in my age range (30s). It's just what you're looking for for an evening of mellow drinking and laughs with your friends. And if you order the fries, get two baskets because your friends WILL steal them all, especially if they've had three long island iced teas and forgot to eat dinner. read more

Went here twice for lunch and beers. Didnt really care for it. The food was nothing special. Got a cheeseburger and fries. Decent but nothing special. The second time in there I got wings. The bartender brought my plate to the drunk guy a few seats down from me by accident. The dude quickly grabbed a wing. When the bartender realized, he took the plate over to me, apologized, and told me he'd deduct the price of one of my beers. I couldnt tell you how the wings were seeing as how I gave the drunk dude the rest of them,paid my tab, and split. The atmosphere is dark, tight, and kinda dingy. I dont really mind that too much for a watering hole, but that coupled with the wing experience...and Im pretty much all set with the place.
