I can't understand why the rating isn't a solid 5 stars....it should be!!! I live about 2 blocks from The Hungry A and have enjoyed their delicious sandwiches and personable staff for years. Recently we had visitors who attended Cardinal O'Hara High School (right near The A). Sooo, for a blast from the past I got Hungry As for lunch. My friend recognized the sandwich right away and talked about high school days, The Hungry A, and Scotties hamburger joint (which isn't there any more). Reading the Yelp reviews, I can't believe that as many times as I've gotten breakfast I've never had a cup of the much complimented coffee!!!!! I usually get take out and bring it home to eat but next time I know the coffee will be part of my order. Bruce gets all the compliments in the review, but his wife is definitely the woman behind the man!!! Even though newly weds....sortof......she stepped in and became as gracious a hostess as Bruce is a host. Stop in and say hello, enjoy a sandwich and have a chat.....you won't regret it! read more

Customer service at it's best! I had the bacon, egg & cheese on a super fresh Keizer bun that was amazing! A friend had steak and eggs, but wasn't aware until food came that it was "shredded" steak meat and not an actual "steak". Other than that, it was great! read more

A fine place for breakfast. The first word that comes to mind is "throwback". Your small town breakfast nook that plays host to a lot of newspaper holding regulars. 1. Cash only. There is a small newsstand next door that has an ATM. 2. Love the awning in the middle of the restaurant that hangs above the larger communal table that runs down the center. 3. Service is always very good. They make sure you have ketchup, hot sauce and everything you need to enjoy your breakfast. Very polite and welcoming. 4. It was great to see an employee in the back slicing fresh tomatoes. Fresh ingredients are always a good sign. 5. Fresh rolls! 6. Always fun to watch the regular customers and staff interact. 7. Very small food prep/kitchen area. Somewhat fascinating how they get it all done in such a confined area. 8. It did take a little bit longer than expected to receive my order. Most of the customers here though seem to be of the very patient kind. 9. The oldies are played from an old boom box located on the back counter of the restaurant. Best breakfast in the area! Little place with great food. My girlfriend had a mushroom and pepper omelette which was delicious and I had the scrapple and egg big muff which was very satisfying. The cook/owner was so nice and jovial. He also made us some out of this world sticky buns which he gave to us on the house!(Don't go in expecting free sticky buns lol) This is definitely a great place for breakfast ands atmosphere. Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 12:30 pm - I've driven past the Hungry A countless times but never entered. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato on wheat bread. Oh - and a cup of black coffee. The cook was busier than a one-legged man in a kicking contest! The two ladies were sweet and courteous. A long table with stools occupied the center of the room with additional seating and stools along the walls. The coffee was excellent and the grilled chicken sandwich was fine. I did not receive an invoice and wasn't sure of the cost. I walked towards the register like a student awaiting his grade for a math test. I received my "grade" after waiting patiently for several customers to pay for their grades er, orders. If you're looking for a frills-free dining experience, this is it. read more

The Hungry A, for those is the know, is a revered Delco breakfast spot that just as never received the 'Philadelphia Institution' nod it's always deserved. Part of the reason is that it's not a 'neighborhood corner-store nook' kind of place but instead on Sproul Rd. (320), in a small strip small, but not three minutes from the Blue Route. (Get off at Rt. 1, off at 320, left, and it's a light away.) But my gosh, what a spot... fast, custom made, affordable breakfasts owned by a lovely couple since forever. My everything omelette was giant with the best sausage I've has in years... with an egg bagel and creme cheese for $7.95... yikes... that would've been $12 and half the taste at any chain. No tables, all stools, but parking at the door and every single thing I see served gets carted directed from the grille to the table...when's the last time you got an egg dish that was steaming hot by the time it gets to you? I could brainstorm for a lifetime and never conceive of a name like The Hungry A, but the name's every bit as interesting, nuanced, and endearing as this restaurant/community hub. Walked in the doors for the first time and quickly forgot about it being a rainy Monday. I ordered a large coffee, a bacon, egg and cheese sesame bagel, and a sesame bagel toasted with butter. I was handed the coffee right away, and it was excellent. The bagels had a snap to them with every delicious bite, and all of the eggs and bacon were freshly made. There are signs of wear and tear about the place, and vintage signs of bygone eras fill up the walls and create an eclectic ambiance. On the way out, I was handed a menu and told to order ahead on Saturdays because it gets really busy. If you are not in a rush, want to sip on a coffee, read the newspaper, chat with a friend, etc., this place is perfect; if not, call ahead, have your cash ready (no credit cards), and prepare to be a regular--I know I will be! read more

Owner and wife run this spot, very small, old-school spot but service is great. Heard this was a great breakfast spot. To me - not so much. On positive side: owners were nice and friendly. Had a good number of sandwich choices. You want a platter? None are listed but they can do it( why no suggestions on the menu?). You want potatoes? No-can-do.Not available. Coffee tastes just so-so and is poured in a Styrofoam cup even if you are eating in.You get one free refill. You want cheddar cheese on your eggs? Sorry - not available. I can understand it is a tradition for locals and seemed to be a hang out for people who are regulars, not as welcoming to newcomers. I recently went back to the Hungry A on Saturday... I used to stop by all the time when I went to Cardinal O'Hara so I went because I was craving a great sandwich. Not only did I get a wonderful sandwich, Bruce also threw in a muffin (which was out of this world) because he knew I am expecting. The girls are wonderful, his wife is such a sweetheart and to top it all off, the food was perfection. We stopped by on our way from the airport because of reviews on yelp. Everything was delicious and made from scratch. Do not let the appearance fool you into not trying it out. The owners were extremely attentive and pleasant. On a side note they do not serve potatoes or pancakes so if that's your thing then this is not your place. The French toast I had was out of this world. My wife had egg omelets with Italian sausage and she loved every bite of it. The place is a bit hard to find because the GPS dumps you in the middle of the highway. Look for the Sproul bowling lanes. They are next to it. read more

My boyfriend and I were heading out of town and looking for a quick breakfast joint we could order and take out. We found this hidden gem on Yelp and we decided to try it. Boy are we glad we did. The Hungry A has been in business since 1964 and you will immediately know why as soon as you step foot inside. The owner greeted us and asked us if we had ever been and since we hadn't he came over and told us about their menu. They are known for their breakfast sandwiches and their cheesesteaks. They can cook up breakfast or sandwich at whatever time you want and they take care of their customers. They made us feel so welcomed that we decided to stay and eat our breakfast here. Our trip to D.C. could wait. My boyfriend ordered the egg, steak, and cheese breakfast sandwich which was essentially a cheesesteak with egg and hands down the best one in Philly. Seriously. Best one. It came on a perfect roll of Italian bread. They use Amoroso's which is a well known local bakery. I ordered the egg, bacon and cheese breakfast sandwich on a sesame bagel and two slices of French toast. The French toast was absolutely delicious and so was my bagel. Keep in mind that the French toast comes in thick slices if you aren't a big eater. I devoured mine. I get the feeling that you truly can't go wrong with anything you order at The Hungry A. Best cup of coffee I had in Philly too and free refills. They stocked us up for our trip to D.C. Their service is truly something else. I've never felt so welcomed and looked after like I did here. The owner had been on his way out and stayed until we got our food. Truly a great guy. His wife was sweet and gracious and took good care of us when he left. We stopped here on a whim after flying in to PA today. It's like taking a step back in time and slowing down. Not only were the cheesesteaks phenomenal but everything about the old signs on the walls, speaking to the owners while they cooked our food, the high school kids who come in after school to stock goods....After speaking to the owners for a bit, those kids are learning lessons to last their whole life. The place is spotless! These people are definitely invested in their community. There's a Dunken' a couple of doors down. Anyone who chooses that over the Hungry A just has no idea what they are missing. read more

The Hungry A is just...okay. If you want breakfast you don't have many choices--french toast or a breakfast sandwich. The food was good enough, but we waited about 20-35 minutes for two bagel sandwiches. I could have understood if the place was packed, but there were maybe five other people in the joint. The place advertises itself as fast and friendly. I'll agree with the friendly part. The owner was super nice, and the wait staff was nice enough. My first Pennsylvania review. This place totally rocks!! I first saw it as I drove by late one night.. and thought what a great name!!! Now I'm totally hooked! It definitely doesn't look like much from the outside but that's it. Once you walk in the door, you are home. It has a counter where you order, and then there are no seats, only stools next to little bars. The owners Bruce and Mickey are a great couple. They definitely make you feel like family. My husband and I stopped in at the Hungry A this morning and were beyond delighted! The signs promise fast, friendly service and that's exactly what we got. I ordered an Eggle (2 egss, mushrooms, and bacon on an everything bagle) and my husband ordered a long roll with eggs and italian sausage. Both meals were absolutely delicious. This gentleman who took our order was personable and funny and made us feel right at home. His wife is the cook and did a superb job. 2 young ladies (daughters??) brought the food to us very quickly so it was served nice and hot. I'd read about this place on Yelp a while back and decided to try it out when my mom was in town and craving an authentic hoagie. So glad we did! She got the Italian salami and I got a meatball sub. Holy moly, I inhaled the sub in record time (which I regretted, it was large!). It was delicious. This will be my go to place when I want a hoagie/sub/sandwich.
