On the way south to the Kenai Pennisula and the Kenai Fjords National Park on a brisk Saturday in late May, I came across a commercial oasis and decided to stop in. It was a good thing.
This oasis stop had everything you'd want, but more importantly, an ice cream shop. Per Yelp, they are called "The Ice Cream Shop", which is an interesting name for it. Everyone can use a spot or two of chocolate ice cream now and then, but for me, it was my first of many on my vacation here in Alaska. I stopped in after checking out the souvenir shop near by and decided that I could get something here at the ice cream shop and be on my way towards Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park for the rest of the day. It was around 10 AM when I got here on a Saturday morning. I noticed this place after seeing a lot of people walking around with ice cream in their hand and thought where did they get that ice cream? That decision helped me to discover a new ice cream place and see what they have here. As long as they have chocolate, I am sold! For the most part though, I enjoyed coming to this ice cream parlor in Alaska Howard just because I had a craving for ice cream and wanted to support local business here. It was a good thing for me and my stomach.
It was a small little ice cream shop along Alaska Highway 1 and it was pretty much a godsend, since that was pretty much the only real meal that I had while driving about south of Anchorage. Anytime for ice cream is a fun time for sure. The prices here are a little pricey, but when you're on vacation, you just go with the flow and nothing else matters - well, within reason, I guess. I arrived here around 10:30am on a Saturday morning. There were a few people ahead of me in line. The service was good and friendly. I had to take a minute to look at all the available flavors before setting on a decision, which arguably was chocolate. Chocolate is usually good anywhere, so I ended up getting that one. I believe it was about $8 for a double scoop delight, which wasn't terribly pricey but it wasn't cheap neither. The ice cream shop is located off the Alaska Highway 1, aka Seward Highway. It's tucked away in a corner of the oasis, but once you can find the restrooms, you can go ahead and get yourself a treat here at the The Ice Cream shop. Only problem here was that there was pretty tight parking options, especially when many people are here shopping and dining here at this oasis. Not sure why this place is such a hot spot but glad it is!
For the most part though, it was nice to have this place here. The service was swift like how most ice cream parlors tend to be. I kind of admit that the flavors that they offer don't seem to be original and only is basically your basic flavors with some variety - just not much. Still, it's an ice cream shop that will cater to your ice cream fantasies, no matter what flavors you are into. You can add extra toppings for a perfect ensemble, but I didn't do that. Just give me my ice cream plain and simple and we'll be alright. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing - as well as cash. I think they had a square reader of some sort at the time of my purchase. The ice cream itself was fun and definitely hit the spot. You can't go wrong with chocolate ice cream and with the vacation in Alaska just starting, it was a fun place to stop by and enjoy a scoop or two. The ambiance was casual and while they do have a couple of tables to sit and relax, you might just need to take your ice cream outside and eat it while enjoying the oasis. I just ate it in my rental car before driving to the next destination.
If you are heading to the Kenai peninsula from Anchorage and crave some ice cream along the way, I can recommend coming here for a second. While the prices can be steep, you're in Alaska in the spring/summer time. Prices are going to be higher. Just saying. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 4.0 stars for the ice cream and the service. It was cool. check em out!
