This place is so cute and quaint! It's nestled right before town, which makes the location ideal. There's also a hiking trail nearby. We stayed in a standard room with 1 queen bed. Everything was clean and tidy when we arrived. The room also came with a little kitchenette with included a fridge, sink, microwave, and coffeemaker. The AC was also new! My most favorite part of the room was the gorgeous balcony with a beautiful view of the mountains! The only things I wish were better was the shower, and the lack of a dresser made it difficult, since there was only a desk and a dining table. There was a closet, but clothes could only be hung (they did provide hangers!). Walls are definitely thin, but the earplugs they provide certainly help! Lastly, the staff were super friendly and attentive. They accommodated for a late check in... the delicious fresh scones every morning were also a bonus! Overall, we would come back here again, but perhaps in a different room/cabin. It's a great place to stay for a short weekend trip! read more

This place was exactly what we hoped for! We were greeted by Raj, the property owner upon check in. He was very welcoming, informative, and friendly. The room, a single queen set up with a kitchenette, was the perfect size for my fiancé and me. We took a few minutes to look around and notice all the tiny details that made our room feel like home. The best part was opening the kitchen door to see the incredible view of the Idyllwild wilderness. We quickly settled in and then sat on the wooden deck to watch the clouds roll in while we enjoyed a cool beverage. We brought our own food in a cooler so we wouldn't have to leave for the night. However, 830 am is breakfast time at the bunkhouse. A gentle knock at the door let's you know a basket full of gifts has been left hanging on the doorknob for your enjoyment. It was a perfectly restful stay. We will definitely be coming back to stay here soon. read more

I stayed here one night at the end of March with my dog, Thelma. Absolutely loved it! We came up from Hollywood to get some fresh air. The Bunkhouse itself is super easy to find on the way into the town Centre. Plenty of easy parking and Raj the owner, is super friendly. Check in process was super easy and the room was very clean. The bathroom was compact, but has everything you need including free makeup remover wipes which were actually a godsend for me. The water is super fresh and clear - ugh, I am in love. The kitchenette was great. Crockery and cutlery was clean and lots of options for coffee / teas if you fancied. The balcony door opens up to nature in the back and it was great to sit there in the sun and read for a small bit of time, also while Thelma sunbathed. There is a TV, fan, desk, chair and WiFi - so I was able to do some work during my stay which was fantastic. The bed was large and comfy and I could tell the linen was well looked after. The walls ARE paper thin, which meant my Thelma barked once or twice during the night due to other people making loud noises, but I assume she didn't wake anyone up because it sounded like everyone was already awake. Ha! It didn't bother me and there are ear plugs there if you need them. Oh and breakfast delivered in the morning was AMAZING. Home backed scone, fruit and a juice. YUMMY. I had a lovely chat with Raj (the owner) and his beautiful dog before I left and he is so friendly, welcoming and kind. We spoke about the town and the 'dog mayor' etc. I will absolutely be back and would recommend anyone come here for a night with their pups. read more

Had an excellent stay at the Idyllwild Bunkhouse over the weekend. Raj is an absolute fantastic host, who upgraded us to the cottage on the hill. He was a great help to us throughout our stay, helping us select firelogs, hikes, and things to do. He also has wonderful stories to share about the place, I highly recommend getting to know him. The rooms are wonderful, very cozy and built with love. This is not a luxury hotel; this is where you go to get the real Idyllwild experience - that is sometimes hard to find at other places. You get the sense that you've truly escaped to nature, in a log cabin, and yet are a stones throw away from the town which has plenty to see and offer. There is a very special hike that you can take that leads right out from the hotel. There is a hammock and waterfall that is truly extraordinary. Loved to go and meditate out there and come back to my room with a smile on my face. If you're looking to take a few days and escape the hustle and bustle of the city, you couldn't find a more affordable and perfect place to do so. The one thing I would hesitate on is the beds could have a bit more to offer, particularly if you are sleeping with two people. They're a bit small and not the greatest. But regardless, the sleep was great. Highly recommend this place if you see an opening. read more

I wasn't sure if I would like this place because it was right on the street. But, good old cottage country charm won me over. I had stayed on the property May of 2010 for a friend's wedding. Boons: +Well-lit signage and structure making it easy to find even whilst driving late at night. +Ample parking. +Though a little dark, rooms were clean and cozy and the kitchenette was charming. +Yummy sconces and jam + fruit hanging on your door in the mornings. +If I recall correctly, delish Wolfgang Puck coffee. +View of the forest canyon from the balcony. It was a little pricey it was about $200 a night, maybe because it was a Saturday night. The manager at the time was helpful and returned calls immediately when I had done the reservation. She also answered my questions and was welcoming making our short stay pleasant. I would definitely recommend to those who want to go up to the mountain and come home somewhere cozy to rest their weary excursioned-out heads. read more

We had the Queen bed room with the two bed loft , and it was a real decent place to spend the weekend if this is your "first" time in Idyllwild. All the rooms have a balcony view of the trees and nature as well as an amazing view of the stars at night. The facility was built in the 1950s and it has that visual style from the outside. The inside of the rooms are average and cabin like - but nothing spectacular - it's more Basic Motel like . There are a few nice accents and touches around. it's average at best but not horrible. There are a few nice freebies here and there with a Continental breakfast basket and such. The office staff are very helpful, lots of information for first timers to and it's only a three minute drive to town. read more

I rented the Forrest hideaway cabin and it was perfect. Definitely hidden away and quiet and peaceful. I brought groceries and made dinner in the cute kitchen and ate it by the fire. Decent but NOT cozy for winter nights. Cons: -Furnace was broken! -one space heater was provided to serve as an alternate for the broken furnace. One space heater was not enough. We had to wear 4 layers each person even with the space heater at full blast. Outside night temperature was 26F. -if you visit hotelsdotcom, some reviewers also complain of a broken furnace and inadequate heat from a space heater. You don't know until you get there and still get charged full price. -after checking in, i asked to have the furnace turned on but receptionist says furnace is broken and one space heater was enough if we left in on at full blast. Unfortunately we kept waking up in the night due to the cold weather. The next morning the receptionist offered her sympathy. We just could not have a positive overall impression of this hotel based on our experience. -NO weatherstripping on doors and windows. This is partly why the room is so cold. No space heater would be enough to counter the cold air coming in the room (the bathroom window HAS A DRAFT coming in because the window does not have a seal. This makes taking a shower in the winter DREADFUL, especially when the provided space heater is adequate to heat only a small portion of the bed area.) the patio sliding door has a draft coming in since it does not have proper sealing. This makes one small space hear inadequate for the whole room and separate bathroom (outside night temp was 26F as mentioned before. YES I made sure windows and doors were fully shut.) -As another reviewer mentioned BED and PILLOW WAS HARD and lumpy, which contributed to a lack of a good night's sleep. -As another reviewer mentioned WALLS ARE PAPER THIN. The noisy nextdoor neighbors kids were up playing games and screaming until midnight. Quiet hours are 9pm -7am. Receptionist asked why didnt i call to complain. I already complained about the space heater and nothing was done. So i didnt bother about the next door neighbors. Even if management would tell them to keep the noise down, the hard bed and pillow, along with the cold room, would still keep us up all night. -As another reviewer mentioned there were cob webs on several parts of the ceiling and the light fixtures were dusty, but this was a minor issue given the hotel's rustic atmosphere. -both soap dispensers in the bathroom were stingy. With one pump you get one small drop of soap. You have to pump these things several times to get enough soap to make a lather, thereby requiring some unnecessary effort. -the soap dispenser in the shower was not affixed to the wall making it difficult to dispense soap -one of the two apples provided by the bed and breakfast had a moldy rotten core and could not be eaten, but that is okay since brought fruit from home. Pros: -fresh donuts in the morning, with instant oatmeal and fruit -has a kitchenette with microwave, dishware and a washing station -hot flowing water but you have to wait several minutes before the water gets hot -bed was clean -close walking distance to nature center Overall: We just couldn't sleep at all here. We stayed in the Woodland Vista cabin yesterday night. I'm so sad to give two stars, but it was warranted. The owner, Raj, is so kind and nice, but there are MANY issues that need to be resolved. The cabin is different than the pictures. I loved the look of the outside, but the inside is different. Issues: -the towels are scratchy -the shower isn't big enough and the shower gel/ shampoo is placed so you have even less room to move around in the shower -the toilet runs -the pillowcases, sheets, duvet, and curtains need to be washed since they had smudges, crusty stuff, and handprints on them -there are pieces of sheer fabric just thrown over blinds, but not actually tied to anything so they fall off easily -paint is peeling off the walls just inside the front door -a random wicker chair is placed in the bedroom so you have zero room getting in and out on that side of the bed (we moved the chair to the living room) -the bed was very, very hard -the pillows were incredibly flat -it advised you get scones in the morning in the fishing creel, but we got two quaker bags of instant oatmeal, two spots, and two juice boxes When we started here a few years ago, it was in one if the regular bunkhouses and it was far better. For $250/night (close to Vegas prices), you'd think these issues wouldn't be a thing. We booked two nights, but had to leave after one because we got about 5 hours of sleep in that bed and with those pillows. I was only refunded HALF of one day. I suppose it could been worse with no refund at all. However considering the amount of issues we had, I would think one full night's refund would have been fair, especially since we left well before check out. I really hope this place improved because I love Idyllwild. read more

Our first time in Idyllwild was extra special because Raj is such an awesome guy. From the first phone call to book the room to the final farewell when we were checking out, Raj made the whole experience amazing! The room was cozy and comfortable. The breakfast baskets were such a nice treat every morning. The scones were so good we hunted down which bakery he ordered from and got more (also we were raving about how good they were that Raj gave us double portions of scones out last day, yay!) Very happy the room was dog friendly, my puppy Pepper also had a great stay! Raj went above and beyond to help my girlfriend and I, one evening we were trying to get an uber into town so we could bar hop safely. We ran into him when trying and failing with lyft and uber. He recommended a local service, which when they didn't pick up, he drove us to town himself in his own car! Such a nice guy. (Bonus points, we ran into him at the end of the night that evening, and he even drove us home!) Definitely will stay here again when we visit next! read more

We stayed for just one night in room #5 and we only wish we could have stayed longer! The cabin-style rooms are so quaint and the views are absolutely gorgeous. There's a little kitchen and a porch for sitting and coffee-drinking. The staff was absolutely wonderful, so friendly, sweet, communicative, and helpful. This little cottage has been a little slice of heaven. Our room had its own cabin like charm, the hosts made every effort to ensure that you have everything you need and experience comfort in the heart of nature. The quietly cultured town of Idyllwild, set a mile high in the San Jacinto Mountains, is one of our favorite weekend getaway locales, and whenever possible, we always try to take advantage of any lodging deals in the area. When a 2-night LivingSocial deal popped up I jumped at a chance to spend another budget weekend on "The Hill". The Strawberry Creek Bunkhouse is a cute little motel off the side of Highway 243, and it's only a few minutes drive from the center of the village. However, many of the other reviewers are correct about this place: small rooms, thin walls- just remember that there are certain caveats to staying here, so it's best to get some 411 before your expectations get crushed. We stayed in room #2, and when I made the reservation, I was warned that it was the closest room to the highway. However Hwy 243 is not the Sepulveda Pass; the traffic on this road is such that at night, there isn't a whole lot of commuting going on. Yes, you can hear the cars drive by- every once in a while, that is. The walls, however, ARE thin, and you'll be able to hear your neighbors very clearly, In fact, from 9:00PM to 9:00AM, a rule card states to please not make any noise, which includes speaking loudly, watching TV with the sound on, or- well, you know. During the winter, I'm sure the rooms can get cold- ours did- especially the tiny bathroom's tile floor and the toilet seat. You won't get frozen to either one, but it can be quite a shocker during midnight trips to the toilet with mile-high winter temperatures. Our room did come with two portable heaters that were already on when we checked in, but during the night, we turned them off for fear of burning the place down. A few personal (and weird) experiences concerning this place: I discovered I do not like waffle weave blankets. Our blanket, although light, kept us perfectly warm, but the texture of the waffling was a weird sensation to me during the first night. The second night we also used the duvet cover and the reassuring weight helped a little bit. The bed itself seemed fine, but for some strange reason it gave both of us a really fitful sleep. I don't know if the bed was too soft or what, but it was just strange. Another very strange thing about our bed is that although we were told it was a queen bed, it seemed a lot smaller than our bed at home. We both found our room strangely claustrophobic, even though we could see that there was clearly room to move around. Our room, cabin #2, actually sleeps three so there was also a twin bed between the front window and our bed, which was probably what caused this cramped feeling. Our room's flat screen TV was also mounted in a way that I actually banged my head on it once, and made a big sound. I think it was during quiet hour, too. I can't speak for the other cabins' bathrooms, but one major pet peeve I had with our bathroom? The shower- the temp was fine, and the shower was cramped, but the shower head didn't shower you so much as it aggressively misted you. This is fine on a hot summer day, but on our winter weekend, I immediately regretted not washing my hair at home before coming up here. I think this probably to conserve water, so a heads up if you're thinking of enjoying a nice, long hot shower. Other than these weird complaints I had regarding our stay, the people who run the place are very nice and thoughtful, and do their best to keep the motel running. They made sure the heaters were on so our room was nice and toasty, and our breakfast basket arrived right on time at 9:00AM- the homemade scones with the jam were a nice start to the morning. Our room had a small kitchenette that opens up to the outside patio, with a small 'fridge, microwave, dinnerware and cups, and silverware, along with a small coffee maker. Just remember that another rule of staying here is that you must wash whatever dishes or utensils you use. Incidentally, the hot water in our unit's kitchenette was busted so we tried not to use the supplied dishes and cups too much. In short, it's good to know in advance what sort of things to expect when staying here. For the money we spent on our stay, the only real complaint I have is the anemic shower head in our unit, along with the resulting shower experience. Other than that, everything else was fine. We were in Idyllwild to relax, and our room was the perfect place to do so. The Strawberry Creek bunkhouse is a typical cozy, family-run motel. As long as you know what you're getting into, this little roadside motel is a nice, little base camp for your weekend adventures. read more

Very friendly owner, the staff brought us fresh scones and snacks each morning in a little basket, and everything was clean, our beds were comfortable, we had a nice shower that was remodeled, and the kitchen was stocked with dishware. They even had these cute little mini electric fireplaces that emitted a good amount of heat to quickly warm up the place. Had fun today walking behind the cabins down to the creek on the large property they own. We crossed the creek and hiked up the hillside to find a pretty view of Lilly Rock and surrounding mountains. We really enjoyed our stay here. I purchased a Living Social voucher for a 2 night weekend stay and everything went very smoothly with the transaction. I want to offer some advice for those who are considering staying here: 1. These are not luxury accommodations by any means. This is a roadside motel from the 50's with rooms that look like small cabins. Appliances in the units (microwave, fridge, sink) are functional and not new and shiny. In fact, the fridge looks like it was made in the 70's. However, it worked just fine. Note that there is no iron or ironing board in the units. 2. The bathroom is small. There is a shower stall that really should be updated. But a nicer shower would probably mean higher rates, and I will take a good deal over a nice shower at this point. If you have been to summer camp, you will be familiar with this type of shower. Here it was a bit rusty and the floor had large areas of missing paint. Shampoo, shower gel, etc. are offered via a dispenser on the shower wall. Likewise soap and lotion by the sink. There are small, narrow wooden shelves to place your toiletries. There are no counters. There is no blow dryer in the bathroom but there are plenty of mirrors. 3. There is no DVD player and the tv is not flat screen. It is small and like the fridge, looks like it was manufactured several decades ago. 4. There is a small air conditioner unit built in the wall. There is a ceiling fan and extra table fans stored in the closet. Even with all these things running, the room is still going to be warm in the midst of summer. We brought our own large box fan with us and it really helped circulate the air in the room and made it much more comfortable. Without it, I think it would have been pretty stuffy in there. I spell out all these things because I have read previous reviews where people have been angry and disappointed with the units. Again...do not expect luxury accommodations or even anything along the lines of a Sheraton or Holiday Inn, for that matter. Don't book a room for a special or romantic occasion like an anniversary or birthday. The rooms are bare-bones basic. Match your occasion/expectations with reality. Don't lash out with a harsh review because you were expecting otherwise. I don't think it's fair to the owners. Especially if you are using a living social voucher and getting a great price, like we did. If you want something more luxurious or romantic, look to the many cute inns or resorts around Idyllwild. Or pay more for one of the private cabins on the bunkhouse property. These options are more expensive, but you will be happier in the process. What you will get here is a super clean place with comfy beds and amazing customer service! You will also get (every morning you stay) a basket delivered to your door with warm scones, jam, oatmeal packets, juice boxes, and mandarin oranges. The oatmeal packets were not Quaker brand; they were actually whole grain with flaxseed. Healthy and yummy:) And such a nice way to start each morning. I can't emphasize how amazing the customer service was. We had to reschedule our reservation on short notice because of an unexpected medical issue. I spoke to Olivia and she was so compassionate and understanding, allowing us to reschedule and expressing sincere concern for our situation. Tiyo (not sure of spelling, sorry!) at the front desk was also so sweet and kind. We felt so welcomed and taken care of. I will never forget that! I also noticed little touches of hospitality like the lights, a/c and ceiling fan being on when we entered our room for the first time, and the ice cube trays in the freezer already filled with ice. I really appreciated that after a long drive from LA. Our stay was a wonderful opportunity to get away from LA and relax. Loved the fact that the bunkhouse was close to town, where there were plenty of cute shops and restaurants to explore. Also, it's very close to the Idyllwild Nature Center which is a great place to take the kids and/or enjoy a little picnic among the beautiful trees. Overall our visit was perfect. I think the bunkhouse is a great place to stay if you are a no-frills person with no-frills expectations. We loved having our room as a home base as we went out to explore the town. My boyfriend and I have stayed here throughout the years since 2006 and we keep coming back - we love it here. This used to be the Atipahato Lodge but I guess at some point they changed ownership (?). Either way, its as good now as it was then, which makes me happy because its reasonably priced. Breakfast used to be served in the front office but now they leave a small basket hanging on your door with scones, butter, fruit, and juice; honestly the cutest thing and a nice touch. The rooms have a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, coffee maker, and some plates and silverware. The bathrooms are snug but i like it - in the colder months you have to run the hot water for a little bit to get it going in the shower. And if its really cold, you'll be asked to let the shower drip a little at night so that the pipes don't freeze. Our room was dirty, with clothes left in the room from previous guests. No soap. Lumpy mattress. AC broke as it was over 100 degrees outside. The owner didn't have another AC unit or another room to move us. After giving him a chance to fix the situation, we ended up packing up and leaving. Vacation from hell. read more

This review is based on our stay at the Forest Hideaway cabin. All my GF and I have to say is that we absolutely loved it! The cabin is hidden away from the bunkhouse rooms, giving you total privacy. The room was very cozy, the bathrooms include all your toiletries (soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner), the tub has a whirlpool, and the kitchen included all necessary cookware (although I would bring a big pot if you wanted to cook a huge portion of whatever you'd like) and has a 4-burner stove for cooking. At about 9-930am, they will softly knock on your door and leave a small basket including oatmeal packets, freshly baked scones (which are DELICIOUS), homemade jam, a couple juice boxes, and a couple of tangerines. When you're finished all you have to do is leave the basket on your front door and they will come by to pick it up later in the morning. At night it got pretty cold outside, but inside the cabin was nice and toasty due to a dish heater for the living room/kitchen and a radiator heater for the bedroom. We decided to use the fireplace with Duraflame logs instead, but it's nice that there are options so you don't freeze inside. The wifi is a little spotty (mostly because the cabins are so far away from the router), but that would be the only thing I could find that would be an issue for some people. The staff is super nice, the town is a very short drive away, and you have all the peace and quiet you desire. We can't wait to book another weekend here! read more

I stayed here just this weekend (01/08/16-01/10/16) and had a wonderful stay. The drive up was very scary at night and chains were definitely a must so if you plan on visiting during the snowy winter months, be prepared. Our car slid at one point and that was our sign to pull over at the nearest turn out/gas station to put chains on our tires. BTW, very helpful locals saw us struggling and helped us with our chains. We encountered that kind of hospitality with the locals our entire weekend visit basically everywhere we went! My BF and I stayed in a standard queen room and the room was much nicer than the pictures! We arrived at 7pm and our key was waiting for us in a labeled envelope in front of the office. We got our room through a 3 day/ 2 night stay deal on living social for $130 and I think it was worth it. They view from our balcony was beautiful and enjoying the view with the best scones we've ever had was even better. There are a lot of complaints about the thin walls, but keep in mind that this place was built back in the 50s. I personally didn't think it was an issue. We were lucky enough to have neighbors who respected the 9pm-9am low volume time rule. Never had problems with noisy neighbors. Also this is a cozy BUNKHOUSE not some 5 star ritz hotel, so keep that in mind when forming expectations. It's a wonderful place for what it is...a cozy, comfy, and surprisingly well maintained little getaway IMO. The room was also incredibly warm! The heaters were powerful. Beds comfy with LAYERS AND LAYERS of warm blankets and more than enough pillows! If you're looking for more privacy and bigger accommodations, then opt for one of the private cabins instead of a room. As far as the amenities, I loved that we had a kitchenette for budget friendly eating. Everything worked just fine (coffee maker/microwave/fridge). Complimentary coffee packets, sugar, and creamer in the refrigerator ready. A couple bowls, cups, utensils, a sink, a dish soap all supplied by the bunkhouse. The bathroom is tiny but I expected that and it functioned just fine. Hot water worked, you just have to let the shower warm up before jumping in. If the bathroom is cold, they provide an extra electric heater in the closet to help. Our bathroom had a chipping floor tile, but that's not a big deal. I just gave the innkeeper a heads up the next morning and then covered it with a towel in the meantime. TV is older but works perfectly and so does the direct tv. Wifi was a bit weak, but again You come here to getaway from the hustle and bustle. We wanted to enjoy the quiet relaxation Idyllwild had to offer. All the shower gels, conditioners, shampoos, hand soap, and lotions were in convenient mounted pump dispensers that were always full so no need to deal with tiny bottles that constantly need to be replaced! Breakfast came between 9am-9:30am in a basket every morning which is perfect for us because we like to sleep in a bit! Came with a couple cuties oranges, amazing cranberry walnut scones, a couple minute maid box juices, some instant maple brown sugar flaxseed oatmeal, and strawberry jam! DELICIOUS! I will be dreaming about those warm buttery scones! Check in was easy. If you arrive after the innkeepers are gone, you just check in with them the next morning before noon. The woman who checked me in Saturday morning was very nice. Went out of her way to get us fresh towels personally because they're dryer broke. She directed us to where we could get help with our snow chains. The bunkhouse is LITERALLY less than a five minute drive from town which was FANTASTIC! Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for reasonably priced, cozy, humble accommodations in Idyllwild. read more

Loved my stay at the Bunkhouse! We had a great LivingSocial deal ($109 for 2 nts) and ventured out to Idyllwild during mid September. Since all their rooms are on a single level & offer a balcony view of the forest, it does look a little bit like a shiesty motel on the side of the road. But the colors (red & green = strawberries!) and the cute patio chair out front makes it look cozy and cute. I looooved our room!!! Plenty of space in the bedroom, a cute little kitchenette (our room didn't have a stove - just a microwave, fridge, counter space, sink, coffee maker, utensils, plates, etc...) and a fabulous view from the balcony. The balcony is only semi private since there is no wall between on of your neighbors but no biggie. It was the perfect place to enjoy our free breakfast delivered around 9am every morning (home made scones!! fruit, juice and oatmeal). I think by the time we showed up, they've upgraded most of their units to have AC so that's a nice touch for the brutally hot summer months. The innkeepers were also super nice. Even though this place isn't walking distance to the main part of town (5-10 min drive), it is walking distance to the hiking spot Suicide Rock & to the Idyllwild Nature Center. Idyllwild is a great spot for nature/outdoor lovers, but not that much else (most restaurants close around 8-9pm or earlier). The only irks were the really small bathroom (might help if they add a shelf inside the shower for those who like to bring their own bath products) & thin walls. read more

We love this place ! Raj and his wife will do all he can to accommodate you and Alissa who works in the office is a a darling. We are currently staying in the larger cabin. What a view. It's so charming and comfortable. We have been coming to Idyllwild since 1974. My husband since the 50's ! There are a few winners and this is one. Now if you want a more modern style this will not be the place. But if You like a bit of rustic and quiet, don't pass this up. Every morning you will be treated to a continental basket of goodies for breakfast. The small hike to the creek below and the trails are perfect. Yes we are nearer to The road but honestly its not noisy and I have the windows open. A few improvements can be made like the real cool wooden chest which is falling apart could be fixed .. is there a talented handyman in town to nail it together ? And the big ugly gaudy painting of an angry looking man needs to go.. or get a tapestry and cover it .. we will be back, hopefully soon !! read more

So unfortunately during our two night stay we spent both nights in the Emergency at a hospital. At one point we figured we'd leave early and forfeit our second night due to the nature of our medical condition (appendicitis!) but I didn't want to lose out on the cost. After going to the ER the first night and being sent home hours later with no real concern the second night is when the medical condition flared up and we had to leave again, but for good. It was literally the worst mini-vacay ever! This matters because although Raj was an amazing host which would make me want to return to this establishment again it would not be until upgrades were made because I didn't feel the quality justified our price and especially since we didn't spend the actual two nights in the room LOL Even if we had $500 for two nights was steep for the condition of the room. We had the Woodland Vista room which was such a cute cottage from the outside. Charming really. I had been hoping of a view of the mountains and trees which was hard to decipher from the online descriptions if that's what we were getting. The kitchen was awesome and a great convenience however we used the oven and the numbers on the temperature dial were completely rubbed off so we really had to gauge it for using it. The couch/futon was broken upon our arrival and laid out and open into a bed so it was a bit awkward for us when we arrived. We fidgeted with the futon for a half hour trying to fix it before we gave up. This, I felt, took away from the experience as when we were hanging out during the day the only places to sit were at the wood dining room table or on the bed. There were times I wished I could have used it to lounge comfortably while dealing with pain from the condition but couldn't for fear it would further break the futon. I think they just need to put in a clean pullout couch. Raj was a sweetheart in gearing up the AC for us before arriving. Upon arrival I also felt the smell of the cottage was a bit off putting. Maybe a nice Fresh Fabreeze plug-in would help with that... keep it a simple fragrance. The interior needs a bit more help but as this place is under new ownership I'm sure this will take time. Start by caulking the shower head, sanding it, and painting it to clean it up. It's those little details that make guests question the quality of the place when, honestly, there is a lot of potential. If you stay in the WOODLAND VISTA cottage know the following: - Traffic (esp. motorcycles) can be heard from the inside with all windows and doors closed. As night fell the noise became less frequent but the cottage is right up next to the road whereas the regular rooms are tucked on the backside away from the road (can't be controlled by owner) - Since the road is busy and there is limited shoulder available on the road this place is not walkable into town. It would be just a bit too dangerous (can't be controlled by owner). - There's a great little trail behind the property and I'm sure at certain times of the year there might be a running creek but for us it was dried up (summer). The TRAIL though might be a little steep and slippery for kids and some people who have issues on tricky terrain. Proceed with CAUTION. There should be a sign that says that. - There's a hammock outside in the communal area to use, which is awesome, but one time my partner was trying to get off and nearly fell backwards (and down the hillside) because hammocks can be difficult to get out of. I would suggest the owner place it further from the edge and on flat terrain. It was a nice touch but could be a safety issue. - Upon arrival the check in office may be closed but we called the number on the door and Raj promptly came out to warmly greet us. He's a one man operation there in the office so I would not expect him to be in the office often anyways. Our keys were already laid out and checkin was a hot minute. - I'd suggest painting over the red in the living space area maybe a relaxing green for a more woodsy feel and swap out the graphic bright artwork for something to match the nature-y side of Idyllwild. Overall, with upgrades and repairs overtime this place could be a real awesome place to stay but there are a lot of small finishing touches that need to be addressed first. read more

I came here for a weekend with my boyfriend after buying a livingsocial deal. I made sure I booked as soon as the code was available after seeing how few rooms were available. I ended up being upgraded to a double room for free since they accidentally double booked the room i requested. We ended up in room 12. The room was really clean, but had a weird metal shower stall. That was fine, since we expected to be out and about in the wilderness most of the time anywho. Walls were pretty thin, which why they have the quiet hours, but that didn't help since I could still hear our neighbors tv, chatter and even the creak of the floor. Our room had a small balcony which was supposed to be "private" with dividers from the other balconies. No such luck. Only the connected balconies had a small fence between the rooms but the rooms on either sides of us could clearly see us if we went out, and even into our room. So much for privacy.... We opted for the hike to breakfast thing at the Strawberry Creek Inn... but we ended up not hiking since we couldn't find a map of the "hiking" trail. Turns out you were supposed to follow the road. The breakfast was decent and it was nice to have a very informal breakfast with other visitors of Idyllwild. Two things that we had issues with were one, the outlets were old and over-use. There were 5 things plugged into one outlet which I'm sure was not meant to handle that much. If we turned on the TV in the main room, the lights would dim or go out. Two, I understand we are in the wilderness and all.... but it looked as though the cabin had been thoroughly eaten away by termites... and though most of the wood had been replaced, all the ceiling panels and some of the wall panels looked like they had been ravaged by a whole nest of termites. Just made my skin crawl when i thought about it. And also, I don't know how structurally sound that may be. But other than that, the area was quiet, we got breakfast delivered to the door at 9am and it was a nice get away from all the hustle and bustle of LA. read more
