1st visit to The Improper Pig today. Ordered takeout for lunch and this is a place I will definitely go back to. Friendly staff, clean environment, but most of all - DELICIOUS! Some of the best greens I've ever had from a restaurant - and they are vegan. I am not a vegan so I was skeptical - they were fantastic. I think their East Carolina sauce is the best they have but the Hoisan is very good as well. Looking forward to dining in on my next visit. Well done! P.S. I'm giving this place four stars for the outdoor scene. This place has an AMAZING outdoor space. Live music too. The sides were better than the main course. I ordered a half rack of ribs, collard greens and Mac n cheese. Sides were just great. Cheesy mac and solid greens. Ribs were a tad bit dry and lacked seasoning. That said, I still ate them because I was starving. Drinks were strong. Service was great. I'll be back to try their rib eye. Stay tuned. read more

My first time in NC to visit my best friend who recently moved here. We are from NY and wanted to get some good bbq food. The improper pig was SO good and of course we got the biggest plate! We shared the improper charcuterie which comes with 4 meats, chips, hush puppies, coleslaw etc. Our server Gyasi was so helpful with which sauces to use and what other gourmet sides to get! Great experience, fast and helpful service, and great drinks! Will come again when we visit next time! read more

Probably the worst tasting bbq in Charlotte, you can tell the brisket and chicken both shredded and half was previously frozen you can taste the freezer on it not to mention my food was cold , with that frozen chicken juice, just gross, I would've got better chicken at Harris next door, after having midwood and smokehouse and even macs this is just sooo bad read more

Came in today because I could smell the meat smoking from Harris teeter, I placed a Togo order with gyasi (the tall gay man) and got the chow bao sliders with pork and a side of sweet potato fries. It was pretty delicious I do think I'll be back soon read more

I finally made it over to the new location in Rea Farms. This area has grown like crazy, which is good to see. Improper Pig has one of the best locations in the area, right behind the Harris Teeter. Parking was fine and it was easy to find. The food and drinks at this location remain up to the standards of the other locations. They have a cool upstairs area at this location which is a nice addition. We tried their chicharron, jalapeno bites, several of their bbq items and the sides - Grits, Mac and Cheese, collards, beans, and hushpuppies. We enjoyed it all. I'd visit again. read more

They served me a piece of fat. Should I go on or is that enough information for you? How about if I add that they "up charged" me $4 for that piece of fat? I should have taken a picture. It literally was a piece of fat - no meat whatsoever. I ordered the Rea Farms Platter that came with two choices of meat. I chose the pulled pork and the brisket. The brisket cost an additional $4 because it's considered a premium meat. Wouldn't that be great? (To get premium meat). I literally got a 2"x 8" piece of fat - no meat. (Also note the one piece - only one piece is included for the additional $4) Who cuts, plates and serves a piece is of fat to a customer? And then charges them $4 more? (See other pics that are posted here to get a better view of the size of a piece of brisket - the platter comes with one of those size pieces) So why didn't I say anything to the staff? I'm not that guy, I'd rather just write a negative Yelp review. Two other weird things. I ordered a Double Manhatten and they billed me for two Manhattans. I mean, just tell me it's not available and I'll order two drinks. It came in one glass. Lastly, the platter came with one hush puppy. Hilarious. The consistent theme, which is somewhat common in the industry, is that they are clearly viewing things from their perspective and not the perspective of the customer. Good luck with that. read more

First visit here, the customer service was outstanding! Our waitress gave us many suggestions. We ordered the jalapeños for appetizer and they were great with a nice kick. The hush puppies were crispy on the outside and soft inside. I ordered the special "shrimp and grits" and it was very flavorful. My husband ordered the all meat plate and he loved it. Some of his beef brisket meat was not cold not warm or hot as it should be...not sure if maybe it sat too long in the kitchen before bringing out but my friend also ordered the brisket and Hera was also cold. I want to say that the service and our waitress was very nice and attentive, she kept coming to check on us and refilled our cups constantly. I will come back for the shrimp and grits and to try the salmon BLT. read more

Stopped in here for some take out while my wife was out of town. I have largely been unimpressed by BBQ places in the Charlotte area. Thought I would give this a try. I was pleasantly surprised. Got pulled pork and added a sweet BBQ sauce. The pork was extremely tasty and really enjoyed the sauce, too. Also got the jalapeno grits, macaroni and cheese, and hushpuppies. Everything was really good. I will definitely be back. Next time plan to eat in the restaurant as the restaurant looks really cool, too. My wife doesn't like BBQ, but I think I can talk her into trying this place out! read more

We live nearby and come here regularly. Everything we've had is delicious! Recently my husband got the smoked mahi with grits and spicy green beans, and we couldn't believe the meal is only $20- this is a dish you could easily pay double for elsewhere. We really love the all the smoker meats, the jalapeños, and salads. As someone who doesn't usually go for traditional barbecue, I enjoy the variety on this menu. Not sure if it's fair to review after not eating the food... but I sat in the restaurant for 20 minutes with no service while inattentive servers and managers passed my table. Menu presents as premium, as do the prices (although appropriate for Rea Farms). I'll give it another try in a few months after they figure out how to manage the staff. read more

I've been to the Pig a couple of times and have never been disappointed with the food. Tonight I got the brisket sandwich with a side of Mac n' Cheese. The scorecard? 5 out of 5 for the brisket. Quite possibly the best brisket I've had in Charlotte. I don't remember having better outside of KC or Austin. 4 out of 5 for the Mac and Cheese. Very flavorful, but the consistency was not optimal in my book. Very much worth ordering and enjoying, just not the best. 3.5 out of 5 for the sauce. I had the Queen Bee which leaned too hard toward sweet for my tastes. Probably should have gotten the Mary B instead; I was in a hurry. 3 out of 5 for price. The sandwich, sauce and the side was $16.25. I don't withhold a tip these days, even for take-out, but adding in the tip on top of this made it feel a bit too pricey to make it a regular excursion. This is probably why it had taken me a while to return since my last visit. 4 out of 5 for service. I got my order as takeout and ordered it on site. The host took my order promptly and it was produced fairly quickly. Nothing to complain about, but as this was simply takeout, a 5 out of 5 seems excessive. All in all, a solid 4 out of 5. Had I a generous coupon and a different sauce selection, I might be convinced to give it a 5 overall. That brisket was awesome, even for just four sandwich-sized slices. read more

I usually give a new restaurant a few months before I try it but....since this was just another location of an existing restaurant..what could be wrong. We were quickly greeted and sat. Our server came by within an acceptable amount of time. We ordered our drinks and two orders of Hush puppies with Honey Butter. The Honey Butter was RICH and CREAMY..the Hush Puppies were not very hot and not very tasty. The outside of the Hush Puppies seemed to hold on to the oil from the Deep Fryer. On to our meals. My Granddaughter had the Kid's Pulled Pork sandwich with Chips. The Pork was barely room temperature and dry as well the Chips were not hot. My wife and I had the Chow Bao Sliders. The Buns were supposed to be steamed but once again..COLD FOOD. The other couple had Pulled Pork and Pulled Chicken. Keeping in line with the rest of our tables meals... Barely Room Temperature and Dry. There was also a large platter of Sweet Potato Fries. For a restaurant that cooks all of their meats on a daily basis I was surprised that the fries seemed to be previously frozen. The name IMPROPER seemed to describe our meal completely. My husband and I have been meaning to check this place out and we were not disappointed. The food was great but the service was even better. Upon arriving the hostess asked if we'd been in before and we told her this was our first time in. When our server Rich greeted us he already knew we were first timers and with our request, offered up what his recommendations were for appetizers etc. We had a difficult time deciding because it all sounded amazing! We started with cocktails which were delicious. We chose the nacho appetizer which consists of house made salt and vinegar chips with homemade pimento cheese. We topped it with the pulled chicken. I honestly think we could've made a meal of that! The pulled pork was great and the collards and jalapeño grits did not disappoint either! This is a good place for a casual date night or for a family night out as well. When we left the manager even brought us a $5 gift card to use next time we were in, just because we were first timers. Coming here on a Sunday just feels right. Something about barbecue and pigskin on a football Sunday. Even tho I could care less about football. But I do care about food, and about good barbecue. And finding that The Improper Pig has opened a location in the wiles of Ballantyne makes me happy. Happy happy. Today we go the Pork Rolls to start, which were crispy and warm, filled with some delicious pulled pork. Then I tried the Salmon BLT and the kid got a Mac n Cheese Burger with housemade chips. I wanted to go to the Improper Pig for my birthday. I heard from some folks that it was pretty good. At least for me it was not. First of all, the service. It was just plain awful. It was very slow and the restaurant was not even 1/3 full. Took forever to clear the used dishes and I had to request it. The food, was jus average at best. We ordered the Hush Puppies and the Pork Rolls. The Hush Puppies were burned, sort of like when you reheat them. The Pork Rolls were OK. Nothing to write home about. For the main course I wanted a platter, Brisket, Ribs and maybe sausage. Well, you could not add ribs and the brisket was $5 additional. So your choices were pulled pork, chicken and sausage. Really!!! I am from Texas and this is not how BBQ should work. We are ended up with the burger. Again, I had better at Chili's and for less money. In conclusion, I would avoid this place. Midwood is much better and it is not on my top bbq places or Jim N' nicks their biscuits are pretty good. read more
