    08.2. Butter and Garlic Naan
    Jonny C.

Service was passable. Food was okay. The atmosphere reminded me of a takeout place. The food was a little expensive for the portion size. 2 samosas was $5, $8 with meat. The butter chicken we got was great but again the portions were rather small. We also got the goat biryanis which was a little salty for my taste, but the portion was a little better. The butter and garlic naan was probably the best. All of this cost around $70. Side note there is no spice level which kind of threw me off. Okay Indian food at tourist prices.

The food and service were over the top. I have to have Chicken Tika Masala when I try a new Indian place, theirs ranks 5 out of 5 stars. The sauce was plentiful and full of flavor, the chicken was tender and tasty, some places it's a little dry, not here! I was asked how spicy I wanted it, I Like that alot, since I share with my wife, medium heat was required. The garlic naan was just right and was enhanced being dipped into the masala sauce. The veggie samosas were large and very tasty, lot's of veggie filling inside a nice crisp crust. We tried a "new to us" item, a veggie pakora, onion to be exact, onion Bujia......where has this been all my life?! Yum. A short walk from our hotel led us to Indian cuisine nirvana.

I'd been to The Indian Night during my last trip to San Antonio and had a great meal, so I was excited to return this time. Unfortunately, the quality seems to have gone way downhill. The first issue was when I was seated and given water, the glass was very dirty. I asked for a clean glass, and they brought out a disposable plastic cup. I guess all the glasses were dirty? The food was also not nearly as good as the last time I was here. The samosas were dry and came with only one chutney in a squeeze bottle, which didn't look good. The naan was flat. The chicken korma I ordered was decently flavored, but the chicken itself was overcooked. I'm disappointed because the food was so good earlier this year. Hopefully they can turn things around.

Good location. Nice menu. Loved their Aloo Naan, our first time having this variety so it was quite nice. Vege Korma was pretty good. Daal Tadka was too "dissolved" or meshed, not that good. We have had better Daal elsewhere. Seating area is small and a little cramped for a family.

They have great flavors and everything taste truly homemade. I really like the tikka masala, paneer, and the keema naan. My favorite, is their Samosas!! It looks family owned because I've seen the same 3/4 people working. Quality choice for Togo food that's yummy and fresh!

The outside of the building shows its age with some faded menu advertisements, but once inside the restaurant opens up more than I expected. At first it feels small, but past the bar there's a comfortable-sized dining room. Every TV was tuned to the World Cup, which gave the restaurant a fun, energetic atmosphere during my visit. Service was prompt and friendly. My waiter recommended the pork for the momo dumplings and also suggested pairing the meal with one of their Himalayan beers. After reading several Yelp reviews, I ordered the sizzling pork momo, naan, and chicken vindaloo. I also took the beer recommendation, which ended up being a good decision considering I ordered the vindaloo at a 4 out of 5 spice level. The sizzling momo was the standout of the meal. The dumplings were excellent, and the accompanying sauce was flavorful enough that I found myself dipping almost everything into it. The basmati rice was perfectly cooked, and the chicken vindaloo had a nice level of heat without overwhelming the other flavors. The chicken itself was tender and cooked well. Portions were generous, and I ended up with more food than I could comfortably finish by myself. Overall, this was a great first visit. Next time I'll bring my wife so we can share a few different dishes and explore more of the menu.

The dinner options were either a buffet, or order straight from the menu. Since the buffet was only $15 per person and included some items we wanted to have anyways, we chose the buffet. The choices were limited in number, but enough for us. Buffet included some traditional entrees like Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Masala and several different kinds of Curry dishes. The rice and nan complimented the dish. Wifey enjoyed her meal and felt like the spice level was good enough, but I wanted something a bit more spicy. If my taste buds don't burn a little, then I feel like it is too Americanized. I understand that a buffet is prepared for the average person, but since San Antonio is already known for spicy foods, then a dish or two of a higher heat level would suffice for me. The restaurant is tucked away in a shopping center and it not real visible from the street so luckily Yelp got us here. It is however, close to Loop 1604, so it is an easy drive after exiting. Waitstaff is friendly and on point so it made the small, but comfortable indoor dining a pleasant experience. We will most likely return and fill our craving here and don't forget to have the Mango Lassi, as it was a nice way of finishing your dinner.

The wait for the delivery was only about an hour. That was fine with me, as I had plenty of things I needed to get done before I sat down to dine. When I lifted the bundle that was left at my door, I was shocked by the weight! I don't feel like I ordered all that much, but they sure sent a lot of food. I ordered lamb vindaloo, garlic, naan, rice, and samosas. All of it was truly delicious. The large pieces of lamb meat in the vindaloo were tender and soaked with the delicious flavor of the spicy sauce. There were not as many potato chunks as meat chunks, which I consider a good thing in vindaloo. The garlic naan was some of the best I have ever had. I ordered two of them, but really didn't need the second one. They were huge. By themselves, they tasted delicious, but when you dipped it into the vindaloo sauce, it was absolutely amazing. The very first Indian food I ever had was at a dinner party in 1973 when my family was living in Taiwan. The most memorable item for me was the samosas. The ones from this restaurant we're almost exactly like I remembered. I have to also comment on how well everything was packaged. All of the containers were shrink wrapped for extra precaution. I don't think anything could've leaked even if the driver put it upside down. I am anxious to go and try eating at the actual restaurant. Somehow it was off my radar. Supposedly, it's only 4.5 miles from my home who knew?

Best food ever. Here in SATX, for years, I've (begrudgingly) frequented Madurai Mes a few blocks away. You enter the lobby, and it feels like the staff is having a competition over who can ignore you. It's cramped and dingy, and there are AC hoses snaked throughout the place, and I've never been able to eat there for under $30, but they make a pretty good thali. And so in my brain, the best indian food comes from Resturants you don't much want to eat at. Nawabi was huge and well lit and dare I say clean? It felt slightly dated, and culturally a bit off - like maybe it belonged to an Ethiopian restaurant before - but classy. So the food was going to suck. The menu is expansive and seemingly interesting. It was missing my thali. It did have a number of dishes that offered a few things to try. I haven't, as an adult, longed for food served from a bucket - but Biriyani seems like a solid choice with which to fill one. My kid doesn't care for dosas, but does he like chocolate dosa? I don't know, but were fixin' to find out. Some of the weekend-only options had me salivating. I ordered the Plain dosa with mutton curry. This is a novel combination to me, and maybe also to my waiter, who had me point it out on the menu. It was good, the dosa was thin and crispy with the right amount of edges, the sambar was just ok, the chutneys were good, mutton curry was excellent. I skipped dessert, and opted for chai masala. But I should have really gone with some of their kulfi which looked super tempting in its display case. In short, everything was pretty awesome. I have my next visits penciled in to try the lunch buffet, peruse the weekend menu, and track down the AYCE pani puris. The only problem was that this time - on a Monday night - I was the only customer there, which was weird. But the staff was super welcoming, no Deliverance vibes, so I went with it. If y'all could do me a favor and eat here sometimes to keep this one open, that would be awesome.

After a few trips you get tired of the same heavy tourist menus within a few blocks of the hotel. Zaffran Delight is an easy walk from that stretch of downtown, and it has become the place I keep going back to. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly, and nobody rushes you. That matters when you're eating there two or three times in the same stay. The food is the reason. It's Indian and Mediterranean, cooked with actual seasoning instead of the generic "River Walk plate." Compared with most of what's around the water, it feels lighter and a lot healthier while very satisfying. My favorite is the tandoori chicken kebab. The chicken is marinated, tender, and has that real grill flavor--not dry hotel banquet chicken with a red stain. I get it often enough that it's become my default downtown meal. If you're staying downtown for work and want something better than another basket of chips and queso, go here. Highly recommended.
