And a lot of antiquities focused on large scale decoration. One one hand, there are some beautiful pieces. The light fixtures are pretty impressive in their variety of age and style. It seriously gave me the "Damn, I wish I had a big house to decorate." Ultimately, though, that's why this place doesn't quite work for me. There are tons of things to look at, antique barber chairs, long dining tables, stamp dispensers from the 50's and Neo-Classical statuary. Fun eye candy. But the price point for almost everything is for the wealthy homeowner or the professional interior decorator. Even at the Mart Collective in Venice, which is a high end antique mall, had some things that were very reasonable (I bought some beautiful brocade pillows there). Here? Not so much. So, fun to rifle through if you're into antiques, but unless you have some fairly serious cash, not a lot of actual shopping opportunity.

Unlike most flea markets, this felt more like a craft fair and less like an affair where you rifle through junk looking for a gem. That is to say: there is a combination of different merchants. Some are selling genuine vintage/antique clothing, records, decor and others are selling their personal ceramics, picture frames and more. It's an interesting combination but I would caution that this is NOT a flea market where you can find an armful of treasure for five bucks. The flea market hosts a number of food and beverage purveyors so you can easily get a snack while you peruse what's on offer. But the VERY best thing about this flea market: TONS of free parking in the back of school.

Runs every Saturday -- free parking and free admission -- yay! We arrived around 1pm -- parking was busy but we didn't find it hard to find a spot. Vendors were upstairs and downstairs in the same structure. We started downstairs. The layout is clean and spacious. I appreciated the cute signs that direct you to each floor. Although the rooftop was hot, there were umbrellas along the walkway and some shaded table seating next to the food/drink vendors. The vendors we met were all so nice and willing to negotiate. Downstairs I found a vintage blouse and was somehow convinced that I needed a winter cardigan. The seller gave me a deal I couldn't refuse! Upstairs my husband bought two vintage shirts to add to his collection. It was then time for a break -- the FYMBAS Matcha Latte and Strawberry Cola Slush were perfectly refreshing. We'll be back. :)

They also had a lot of traditional items/supplies for tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and kimonos. I had fun looking through all the items as it brought me back to our summer in Japan. Apparently they have a long standing history in LA, having opened in 1946 after World War II. The shop occupies the site of the first Japanese-owned business in Los Angeles, circa 1890's. Pretty cool! I have a soft spot for everything animal shaped and soo.... I picked up a fun/odd felt tiger Christmas ornament, a cat pen, and a super cute bronze cat shaped spoon that hangs on the side of your cup. Did I need it? No.... but it's fun and makes me happy. Haha! Overall, great shop to browse around and find some unique gift items. They even wrap up your purchases in paper bags like they do in Japan. I LOVE IT!

Yvonne has an amazing eye for for antique smalls. I have found many weird and wonderful things in her shop over the years and the best part is she is always shopping and always seems to have great things for sale - things you never even knew you needed and wanted. She has a good selection of antique and vintage buttons - that's a constant. But her stock is always changing and she puts together these wonderful little vignettes of related things. It's the perfect shop for browsing because you never know what you're going to uncover. This storefront also has a lot more space than the shop on Mission.

Of all the shops dying off in Chinatown and becoming galleries and other things, this one has been…read moregoing strong since 1938 -- when businesses in "Old" Chinatown, near Olvera Street, were relocated into what was then Little Italy, forming "New" Chinatown. Tucked in the Central Plaza, which was opened and dedicated the same year Sincere opened, you can find it across from the fountain where people throw their pocket change, aiming for the receptacles labeled "Wealth," "Health," and "Luck." Tourists love Sincere for the shopping, perusing their stock of fans, lanterns, figurines, porcelain, hats, and other knickknacks after they bang on the gongs at the front entrance for "Good Luck" and "Money" and rub the giant Buddha statue's well-worn belly that greeted them as they entered. I dig Sincere for the things hanging above the shelving -- ceremonial dragon and lion heads, giant Peking opera masks, and massive lanterns -- and the nice people who own the place. It's one of the few shops left that embodies the old spirit of Chinatown.

this is where i shop for folding fans. from decorated paper fans to larger sized nylon beauties,…read moreyou can pick up a fine variety of self-propelled cooling mechanisms. the nylon fans have a plastic armature that is remarkably sturdy and long-lived. i have at least two of these fans from an era when i was commuting across los angeles without air conditioning during the usually hot to witheringly-hot summers. sincere hails from the golden age of chinese 'gift' stores in california. and to this day stocks low-priced items ranging from tiny plastic swords, to more regular-priced things like paper lanterns, kites, parasols & wind chimes. i lament the disappearance of tiny spy cameras that used to be a staple item. sincere is also satisfying when you want to shop, but not somewhere spendy. [jumbo bargain on sunset near echo park ave. also serves this purpose well.]
