This was so disappointing. We went at 1:30 pm on a Monday, not crowded at all. I ordered a beef fajita chimichanga with rice and zucchini. The chips and salsa and green sauce were good. The food came out hot, but tasted like it had been warmed in the microwave. The zucchini was very mushy with no flavor. I could not eat it. The chimi was so hard, I could not even cut it. I asked for a steak knife and still struggled to cut; it was so tough (seriously, like it had been microwaved too long). The queso on top tasted like canned or melted velveeta. I got the chimi opened and ate some of the meat out of it. The flavor was okay but there were lots of gristly pieces. My husband had a taco and cheese enchilada which he said were ok. He liked the boracho beans. The waitress was friendly. We were just visiting the area, but will definitely not be back. read more

Resturant seems okay currently awaiting my food so I may revise this after I eat. One of the things I always judge a restaurant by is the overall cleanliness. In ny 50 years of life I don't think I've ever seen a nastier toilet than here. Unbelievable! I quickly pointed it out to the manager who said he have it attended to. I was happy this place was across the street from the Holiday Inn Express. I am for the most part a vegetarian and finding places to eat in places like this can be a challenge. Among the cowboys and local meth addicts, I was treated very well. I ordered veggie fajita, no oil. They brought me out a spread that was enough food for 3 people with fresh tortillas. Matthew the manager made sure I was happy. I think he was a former vegetarian and was looking out for me. I really appreciated that. I was in town on a business trip, spotted this colorful restaurant, and decided to give it a try. My all-time favorite Tex-Mex entree is chili rellenos so I ordered the double plate, one cheese and one beef/cheese with rice and charrro beans (another fav). WOW! The entire meal was awesome. The chili rellenos were the best I've had: hot, crispy, bursting with meat and/or cheese, and covered with awesome queso sauce. Even the charros and rice were excellent, homemade and very tasty. Our server was great as well. Jalapeño Tree served one of the best Tex-Mex meals I've had - and I will certainly return when I'm back in Athens. read more

I was down in Athens on a job interview and the company I was there to see took me to lunch at the Jalapeno Tree. We were greeted quickly and quite pleasantly and seated in very short order. The decorations were pleasant enough. Our server approached us shortly after being seated and was also very pleasant and attentive. I ordered the Jalapeno Tree Saladwhich which was lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, guacamole, jalapenos, grilled chicken in a taco shell. It was all very fresh and tasty and the shell was nice and crisp with a good flavor. The others that I lunched with ordered the brisket taco, del rio burrito and the fajita enchilada. They all looked very nice and was told that their meals were very enjoyable. Overall it was a very enjoyable lunch at a nice price in a pleasant enough atmosphere. Should I eventually get this job I went for, I can say assuredly that this would definitely be a place I would visit for lunch again and again. read more

The food was decent but the customer service was terrible our waitress came back twice through our whole meal and was kinda rude

Not even worth a star. The food was average. The server had a hard time getting my order correct it was sent back and still came back incorrect so I dealt with it. I asked for a manager (Cindy) and she was nothing short of an ass. Not willing to try to make matters better, didn't want to even want to listen to the complaint, and to top it off I noticed her showing favoritism to customers that lacked color. Very poor customer service. Will NOT be spending my money here ever again and I'll be sure to spread the word. read more

Got the beef quesadilla. Definitely not what i expected, but i grew up eating what you are served so i stood it out. The meat was finely grounded and soupy (not a good combo for quesadilla). Tortilla was over cooked. Its like eating good taco bell at twice the price. The fajitas were top notch so i know its just a hit and miss for the menu items, so beware. A very surprisingly good place to eat. My friend had a stuffed pablano with spicy red sauce. She eats spicy all the time but this sauce kept her coughing and drinking water but she said it was worth the fire! I had the spinach and cheese enchilada and wish I had ordered two. Quite possibly some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I went in on a Monday evening at around 6:45 and wanted to get some take-away for me and my girlfriend. I got a menu and was able to decide on what I wanted in a minute or two. I then had to wait a few minutes to get one of the waitstaffs' attention to order. I got the order in at a little after 6:50. Then the waiting began (oh! the waiting!). I, and my girlfriend, sat at the bar for what seemed like half an hour before someone finally told us that the food was nearly finished. It seemed like the food was taking quite awhile despite there only being a handful of patrons in the restaurant, but at least it was almost done, right? Nope. Had to wait until around 7:40 to finally get told the food was being bagged and was just about ready. Certainly hope it's worth it; no offer of a drink or chips during this hour wait. Well, apparently "being bagged" actually means "I realize you've been sitting at our bar for a while, so here's an empty promise about your food even though it's still got 10 minutes until it's actually ready". Finally got the food at about 7:50. Over an hour wait for our small order. Got home and took the food out and immediately noticed it was cold, like it was sitting somewhere in the back for a good 20 or 30 minutes. Cold, salty, soggy and bland. All perfectly fitting adjectives for this restaurant's poor excuse for Mexican food. If I could give this place 0/5 stars, I would. First and last time I will be setting foot in any part of this chain of restaurants. "Sub par" is giving them too much credit. read more

I have eaten at Jalapeño Trees for several years and in different towns. This one in Athens,tx has never disappointed. But today was exceptional. Aaron was our waiter and he was a super star. After waiting 1 1/2 hours with 2 starving kids and originally was told wait time was 40 minutes, I went to ask the hostess as I stood there she waited several couples that just arrived so i confronted her, all I can say was her attitude and horrible personality did not need to be in the food business. We asked for her manager her smart mouth replied "she didn't know" seriously who doesn't know who their manager is? Then proceed to say she doesn't set people it's not her job she was just there??? Never made sense! Needless to say we left and will NEVER BE BACK. The worst service I have ever seen!! I would not give it a star but it makes you so I gave it a one star. Food was good but service was a little on sketchy side. The girl took our drink orders and said chips and salsa would be out. A couple who were apparently regulars sat beside us. The guy immediately brought out chips and salsa for them. Our waitress apologized and went and got ours then which were over half all bits and pieces so we had to ask for more. The grilled foods and fajitas apparently have the spicy garlic butter which my daughter cannot eat spicy food but the waitress did not know it was spicy. Had to ask for napkins. My husband and I were in town for two nights. We went to The Jalapeño Tree the first nIght for drinks, and loved the atmosphere and drinks. We decided to eat there the second night. My husband went to the bathroom as soon as we were sat. I ordered myself a margarita and him aa beer. The waitress told me she couldn't put in his beer order in until she "saw his face." I have NEVER been told I can't order my husband a drink. She had to make sure I wasn't ordering for a minor, even though it's legal in Texas for a minor to drink with their parent. She went on to explain that we could only order 2 drinks per person. If we want a 3rd, we would have to get a manager's approval. I'm a 54 year old, responsible adult, and don't appreciate being treated like a child.. I'm sure it sounds petty, but it was a complete lack of respect for the customer.
