The Jay Cafe is a great spot for regulars and out of towners and is about 15 minutes from Brazos Bend State Park. I can see why there are so many reviews for The Jay- great food and staff! My server convinced me (didn't take much convincing) to get The Jay Burger which was excellent. It is 2 quarter pound patties stuffed with cheese exploding out when you take a bite. Great flavor and go with the jalapeño sourdough bun for just a kick of heat. The servers were very welcoming and enjoy their jobs as do the guys in the kitchen. Oh and I cannot forget the peanut butter chocolate pie with and Oreo crust, so good!! Thanks The Jay Cafe for a great evening. read more

I drove 25 minutes to this place based on neighbors' recommendations. It's a neat little place in the country with some of the best customer service run by a bunch of teenagers and young college kids. I was very impressed! On to the food I had. Chicken fried chicken - good portion but since they forgot to pack the gravy we gave it to the dogs. They really loved it. Fried Mushrooms - DA BOMB-TASTIC! I wish I could have more. And I wish it came with gravy instead of fresh made ranch dressing so I could use it with my chicken fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Salmon - GOOD but a bit salty Salad - GOOD! Fresh! Spaghetti-O's - Dogs loved it. My kids not so much. Coconut cream pie - It's in my top 5 BEST EVER list. Milk shakes - Chocolate and Strawberry were delicious. We saw them make it. All the sides they made were good. I wasn't a fan of the mac and cheese. It's just not my style. I wish I had got a whole pie instead of just a slice. It's a drive from our area but truly worth it. Friendly staff , good variety and good ole country cooking. We had a party of 6 and they got us served right away. However, not the same standards as before ownership change; inside temperature was uncomfortable and that made it have a bad smell, all of the waitresses had sweaty faces/pink cheeks from the temperature. I have ordered from this restaurant often.When I order "to go" the service is not as good. If you order shrimp they are a lot SMALLER than they used to be but the price is LARGER. I passed by and noticed the restaurant, then I turned around. "Home Cooking " and "Pies" caught my eyes ! Glad I did, very good ! When I went in, I was seated quickly and my glass of tea came shortly there after. I ordered the small chicken fried steak , with fried okra, southwestern shrimp soup and a green salad , with honey mustard. My waitress made sure my tea glass never got below half empty. First time coming here since new ownership or at least that's what the word is. I could tell differences right away like the menu and they didn't offer rolls you had to ask for them. Portions seemed smaller than the past. Even the rolls were itsy bitsy. Overall just seemed like the place is not the old jay cafe. I just wish that places that change ownership would just change name so you're not mislead. read more

We went today, Easter Sunday. Awesome, as always! Alyssa was very attentive, and anticipated our needs. There were 3 of us. We enjoyed the filet mignon special, fried catfish and the large chicken fried steak. Two of us ordered the onion strings and fried okra for sides. They are the BEST! Drop in all the time for lunch. I LOVE their fried okra and everything I've eaten from grilled pork chops to Chicken Fried Steak are always good. Amazes me, the crowds in a small town like Needville. Took the wife for a ride in my 32 Roadster and took a ride to Needville. Always like their home cooked meals and great local waitstaff! Ordered fried mushrooms and they came out piping hot and cooked to perfection. A huge pile of them! Can't say enough about them! I tried the red bean soup. Really good with plenty of ham! Ordered a small chicken fried steak. Ordered white gravy this time with double orders of their fresh fried okra. Wife ordered the pot roast special, green beans and fried okra! My chicken fried steak was perfect and the okra is my weakness. I could just eat their okra! Had it so many times and always perfect! The Wife said the roast was awesome. I have been a long time customer at Jay Cafe. It takes me 30 minutes to get there, but in the past it has been worth it. I usually go on Sunday because I really like their turkey and dressing. It's usually a medium sized oval plate completely full of turkey and dressing. Dressing on the bottom with turkey ladled on top of it and side dishes sitting to the table because there is no room on the plate. I always had leftovers. Today was a different story. Mashed potatoes in a bowl on the plate, and about 1/4 of the normal sized serving of turkey and dressing. Turkey and dressing sitting side by side and still a very wimpy serving. They also ran out of rolls. I was lucky to get 2. This was at 4 pm. I'm not sure if this was caused by the Corona virus, but I don't think so. I was very disappointed. If it continues to be such small servings, I will find a closer place to eat. It's an hour round trip from my house in Sugar Land. read more

I don't go on writing reviews often, but wow. The people that work here were so kind -- from the hostesses that greeted me at the door to the counter where I met a guy (of course I forget his name -- but attribute that to my scatterbrain) but he was helpful with suggestions and was genuinely interested if I enjoyed my meal. I've been to many places but kindness goes a long long way in helping you believe in the basic goodness of people. So I want to thank the very kind staff at The Jay Cafe -- they made me feel special and I did nothing more than walk in their door. I had salmon which is an off-menu item for the evening which was served over a bed of white rice. Both were delicious. The salmon was tastily seared on a grill that that crispiness completed the tenderness. The rice was basically perfect -- with butter. I had corn and green beans. Then peach cobbler for dessert. I'm ashamed to admit I am new to Needville --- well, I am not ashamed to admit that, but I am ashamed to admit that I just found The Jay Cafe being here a year. An entire year without the warm smiles and great food -- shame on me. read more

Since the place has been sold it has been hard to find the same food. Last night we went there for the Valentine's special. Which was the best meal we have had since it was sold to new owners. We think it is under new management due to the people sitting/standing around. Whether it is new owners we don't know. We just want good food. We drove by this place and saw all the cars on the way to the Gulf. On the way home today we stopped. You drive up on a gravel road and the outside is very simple. Very deceiving. After opening the door, we found this place to be a wonderful stop. My wife and I both ordered the Juicy Jay. It is a hamburger with a cheese infused meat patty. I was crazy and ordered extra meat. Wow! This was an amazing hamburger. Very worth the stop. Many people also come for their deserts. We did end up waiting about 30 minutes for our food to come out which was a little disappointing. I've driven past this place many times and my curiosity has been there for equally as many times. Namely, this place is very remote, yet it's a huge restaurant. And when I've driven by when they're open, the parking lot is full. So, while in the Pearland area on Saturday, I decided this was worth a road trip. The truth is that The Jay Cafe serves pretty much the standard Texas homestyle fare of chicken fried steak, burgers, and other assorted fried fare. And The Jay Cafe also brags about its dessert selection. While there are a lot of places serving Texas home cooking and bragging about their desserts, The Jay Cafe excels. We started out with fried mushrooms, which, besides being fried to perfection, were among the largest mushrooms I've seen. I tried the small chicken fried steak with sides of fries and onion strings. The buttermilk type batter on the chicken fried steak was excellent (and it was also perfect on the girlfriend's chicken tenders). The buttermilk batter didn't do quite as well on the fried onion strings, though. My fries were excellent. The chicken fried steak is huge (even for the small portion) and is as close to perfect as you'll get between the gravy and the batter. Both of us were too full for dessert, but did so anyway. My peach cobbler with ice cream was perfect, especially with the strong hints of cinnamon. And she raved about her chocolate cream pie, which appeared to be a monument to dessert decadence. Our server Jane was on point and knowledgeable about the menu. We didn't get the rolls that the menu mentioned, but considering our carb overload, we probably wouldn't have had room for them. All in all, one of the best small town dining options, especially for Texas homestyle cooking. read more

It stayed crispy with the gravy and was flavored well. The mashed potatoes were a bit dry for my taste but the corn was well seasoned. I was advised to save room for dessert by someone who's dined here previously. I had the coconut cream which was really good. The whipped cream was very thick and rich. This place is a gem. I call on a number of industrial facilities in the greater Houston area. One of my client's told me about this place and said it's a great place to eat. That's an understatement. This is a great country cooking diner. I had their special of the day - grilled pork chops and they were tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. I chose the soup of the day and their seasoned corn. I can't remember the name of the soup of the day. It was like a shrimp bisque with rice. Delicious. This place was so good, I came back the next day for lunch and had their fried shrimp. Scrumptious. Called an order in, upon arrival had to stand and wait for staff to ask why I was there. There were about 4 staff in the extra dining area talking and laughing. A male staff was playing on his phone in the corner of the establishment. After a female staff asked one of the other staff to help me, they took the payment and then said I had to wait. Upon giving me my order, it was actually sitting on the counter in a bag under a lamp the whole time. The staff previously sitting in the extra room did not wash their hands, and dropped numerous items on the floor and went straight back to work after touching items in their purses.
