Now we're talking down home cookin here in country Texas. And it was fantastic! I had fried catfish that was simply perfect. The coating was crunchy, tasty and just the right thickness so it didn't overpower the thick catfish filets. And it came with two large pieces, in other words 3 a whole catfish. Next came seasoned corn. I rarely order corn, but the term "seasoned" intrigued me. Damn, anther delightful experience. I can't tell you what spices and herbs were used.m, but they blended together in perfect harmony. The green beans with bacon rounded out the meal. They were good, but not over the top. I should also mention the dinner rolls...brittle on the outside, soft on the inside with a flavored butter that further enhanced the dining experience. I sampled fried okra and coleslaw, but were right on target. So go there and enjoy country cookin at its best. Prices are most reasonable. Very disappointed. This used to be our go to place when we wanted to go out to eat or pick up dinner to go. I called and ordered a curbside pickup this evening. Paid the total bill along with giving the curbside delivery person a cash tip. Get home and look at the receipt which reflects a 10% add on gratuity along with additional tax on the gratuity. The order consisted of two dinners - chicken fried chicken which was a very small piece of meat, 9 pieces of fried okra and a small ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes. Along with an order of Chicken fried Steak same sides. Also ordered 3 sides of green beans and 3 side salads. All were very small and prices have increased. The only thing what was the same size and delicious was the chocolate pie. Had the same type issue with poor service when I went in with a good friend who had never been to the Jay on October 29th. Needless to say she said her family wouldn't be making the trip from Katy to eat there. Have been eating at this restaurant for many years and am sad that the quality and the service have gotten so bad. read more

My wife and I ventured to Needville this evening and enjoyed the best homestyle cooked meal in Southeast TX. Started our meal of with great appetizer of onion strings. The chicken fried steak was seasoned and cooked just right. And to top it all off the Cherry Pie was The Best we have ever had!!!!!!!!!!! Tim, the owner made no less than two stops to greet us and the service was friendly and efficient on a busy Friday night. We will definitely return and bring our friends and family! read more

Salad was crisp as was shrimp. Sauce wasn't too spicy. Only disappointment was bacon automatically comes on the salads and I didn't notice until we got it. Stop doing this to vegetarians especially when advertising as a vegan option place. Upcharge for bacon and save money as a business. Home Cooking is an oft used phrase to describe this restaurant...I would prefer to simply describe it as excellent food. I entertained my customers for lunch at The Jay (this is apparently a local description) and including myself was 10 people. Firstly, the waitstaff handled our party with incredible efficiency serving the entire party at one time. I certainkly have come to expect such service for a more costly restaurant but this venue is no different from any. It was impressive. As a result of the size of the party I had an opportunity to see the breath of the menu actually served which was as impressive as the service. Entree's ranging from Salmon with sides, to Hamburgers to my own meal which was Catfish, Coleslaw and French Fries. The Fish was corn meal battered lightly leaving a delicious combination of fish, well fried and tasty. French Fries were hot and plentiful and the coleslaw incredibly fresh and lightly dressed. The portions given the cost were extremly gracious and the Dessert (Pie is the House Specialty) which I passed on and Cake (which should be a specialty) topped off the meal (or a number of them) however I passed and opted for coffee which was prepared fresh as it was already mid-day and the morning meal had passed, was incredibly full bodied, hot and extremely good. I will return for a more leisurely meal and already have Chicken Fried Steak in mind however I'll have to check out the day's special. This is a place built for Yelpers as every entree served to our party was remakable and remarked upon by the recipient. read more

We drove down from Fulshear, a 40 minute drive, to check it out. We arrived at about 1pm and the room was full. We ordered the daily special of Salisbury steak with two sides. The Salisbury was excellent and the sides were 50/50 some were really good and some were so so. We ordered two pieces of pie to take with us. They were both excellent. I am glad we made the trip but not sure I would drive 40 minutes each way again. If in the area it is a great place. read more

The Jay Cafe is one of my must go places when I'm visiting greater Houston area. The staff is always cheery, friendly, and attentive to your needs even when the place is packed. Kids are welcome here so the noise level tends to be on the higher side. The fried pickle chips are amazing - lightly breaded, fried to perfection, and generously portioned. I had the chicken fried steak (always my go to) with sides of green beans and loaded mashed potatoes; it had everything I wanted if I was in the South. The coconut cream pie is one of the best I've had; very creamy, rich. Definitely a must try if you're nearby. read more

On this beautiful Saturday afternoon my family decided to take a jaunt out to Needville to try out this wonderful country cafe! I had read about this place on YELP and had it bookmarked! Less than 20 minutes from my home, we drove up to a big rooster and a sign that greeted us as we pulled into the generous sized parking area which was full of cars! Good sign! As we walked in we spotted one of my daughter's former elementary school teachers having lunch with her daughter and began to exchange pleasantries as the host took our names for an available table; that opened up fairly quickly! As we got settled, we were greeted by Warren, a very personable young man who waited on us. A really nice young man, we spent a bit of time visiting with him and he gave us some really good suggestions! The vibe was really positive in here and the atmosphere energetic during the busy lunch hour! I ultimately decided on the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans and it was soooo good! More than enough for 2, I was practically rolling out of there! What really impressed me was the selection of desserts! Wonderful pies, cobblers...you name it! We eventually opted for the strawberry shortcake suggested to us by the owner's son Alex. Made by his mom, it was absolute heaven! So good! Later on Alex's dad, Tim visited with us and he was so nice and personable and made our first time experience here much more pleasant! If you're in Needville it's the spot to eat. Home cooking. It's pretty good! Maybe not up to par with restaurants in Houston or even Sugar Land, but solid quality with a homemade, hometown feel. The side salad was just lettuce and tomato. Could have used some red onions, cucumbers, etc but the it was cold, crispy, and the dressing was good. Real mashed potatoes, too. This restaurant impressed me so much that I will be coming back to try other menu items and more pies of course! I don't live anywhere near The Jay, but it's close enough to drive there on a weekend. I visited near closing time on a weekend and had no problem getting a table. Service was very quick even though the restaurant was still half full. The crowd is not diverse one bit, which is what you would expect for a country cooking restaurant IN THE COUNTRY. Although several items on the menu sounded delicious, I went with the small chicken fried steak with loaded baked potato and FRESH fried okra. You don't see fresh okra very often at these type of places, so I had to try it. The chicken fried steak was small (and a little under $8), but I wasn't hungry enough for the large, which is supposedly huge. I finished the steak pretty quickly. Was this the best chicken fried steak in the Houston area? Hmm....probably not, but it was maybe in my top 5. Sides were excellent. To finish the meal, I ordered the peanut butter pie, which was rich and so delicious. Considering this was excellent and who knows when I'd be back in the Needville area again, I ordered a coconut cream pie to go. At only $3.50 per slice, this was a steal considering it would be much more in Houston. I ate the coconut cream pie at home the next morning and this was a real winner and much better than the peanut butter. Everything was homemade, down to the crust. Ordered food ahead for Easter and I would have to say this years food definitely didn't match up to last years. I was totally disappointed. Mashed potatoes were dry. The rolls were tiny and looked nothing like last years. Ham was also nothing like last years, this years was dry and edges looked burnt. Even the pies weren't impressive. Can I just say... Best. Pie. EVER!!! My husband and I have been stopping here as we pass through on our way home. The classic style neon sign wooed us to give it a try. The restaurant is clean and neat. Servers are friendly and give recommendations. Everything we have tried so far is wonderful!! I have had the ribeye twice. My husband has tried the catfish and the chicken fried steak. Our son had a burger and fries. All delicious. This is good old fashioned home style mom and pop eatery that is sure to delight. Where this diner stands out is the pie. Oh my! We got a chocolate pie to take home. Got home and pretty much died and went to heaven. We took the dreamy chocolate deliciousness home two more times.
